Jim Cantore is a beloved meteorologist (气象学家) for The Weather Channel, known for reporting from the center of hurricanes, tornadoes, and other extreme events. He recently celebrated 40 years at the network.
“I’m blessed The Weather Channel has given me the opportunity to do that,” Cantore says. “Nothing beats going out in the field. That is the real storm. You’re in it. You’re a part of it. You tell the story.”
Advances in broadcasting technology have greatly changed field reporting. Live cameras now allow crews to broadcast without setting up the large satellite dishes used during Hurricane Katrina. Cantore says that continuous live coverage has made his job more demanding, but it also keeps him fully engaged in the moment.
The first hurricane Cantore covered was Andrew in 1992. About 115 storms later, he covered Hurricane Milton. Yet he does not keep souvenirs to mark each storm. “I’m not a collector. I’m blessed I just got to do this job.” One thing he can’t do is just go on air and deliver a forecast without preparation. He has to study the weather carefully and understand the conditions for himself.
Cantore considers his laptop the most essential piece of equipment he carries. If he’s out standing in the middle of a storm, he wears a helmet and body armor (胸甲). He never wants to be the story. “Who will come to get me? And why should anyone have to, especially when I’m telling people to stay out of harm’s way? I have to do everything I can to broadcast and not get hurt.”
A couple of months ago there were people saying Cantore was retiring. He has set the record straight since, branding it “fake news”. “I still get a little pump. It’s still fun to be out in the middle of it.”
24. What does Cantore enjoy most about his work?
A. Reporting directly from the field.
B. Celebrating major career milestones.
C. Developing new broadcasting equipment.
D. Checking the accuracy of weather forecasts.
25. What does Cantore’s comment that he is “not a collector” suggest?
A. He cares more about the experience itself.
B. He is not interested in how storms develop.
C. He sees every storm as a personal achievement.
D. He has forgotten most of the storms he covered.
26. Cantore’s wish not to “be the story” shows that he is ______.
A. easy-going
B. strong-willed
C. safety-conscious
D. attention-seeking
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Life of a Forecaster
B. A Storm-Tracking Legend
C. A Story from The Weather Channel
D. The Most Dangerous Job in America

When 21-year-old Avigail Sharon answers a call from a close friend, it isn’t with “Hello?” She always goes “Bello”, a playful version of “hello” used by the small yellow characters from the Despicable Me films. For her friend Sophia Perez, 22, unknown numbers receive no greeting. That behavior, she explained, is a response to reports about AI bots that could record and misuse her voice.
In an era when caller ID has blossomed into avatars (头像), terms of endearment and special ringtones, saying every caller the same “Hello?” can seem almost redundant. “Hello” is now reserved (留作) for more formal calls. But closer connections are greeted with “Hi,” “Yo,” “What’s up?” or “Where are you?”
This shift in greeting habits is likely the product of smartphones, said linguistics researcher Griffin Bassett. When caller information is combined with emails, texts and social media feeds on the same device, there is no longer a need “to establish common ground” at the start of conversations. Instead, it is almost as if we are engaged in one asynchronous (非同步的) “thread of conversation.”
A group of 17-year-olds confirmed that phone calls weren’t even their favorite mode of communication with friends. They preferred voice notes because they were faster than typing and left less room for misinterpreting the tone. Voice notes often began with the story rather than a formal greeting.
In a study, psychologists combed through 14 years of recordings from more than 2,000 people ages 10 to 94. They found that, overall, people were speaking fewer words in their daily lives. Those younger than 25 lost even more words and felt less likely to use expressions of politeness.
The absence of a “hello” is common among even younger generations, too. Across the country, parents have been introducing their children to the ring of a landline handset. Many parents reported that their children would pick up landline phones, which often don’t have caller ID, and wait for the person on the other end to talk, breathing heavily in silence into the receiver.
28. Why does Sophia Perez remain silent when answering unknown numbers?
A. She dislikes speaking on the phone.
B. She wants callers to recognize her first.
C. She expects her friends to identify themselves.
D. She fears that callers might later pretend to be her.
29. What does the underlined word “redundant” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Rude.
B. Painful.
C. Unnecessary.
D. Unavoidable.
30. What role does Bassett’s explanation play in the text?
A. It warns against smartphone use.
B. It presents findings from a related study.
C. It offers a possible reason for the change.
D. It questions whether the change actually exists.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Parents’ concerns about children’s digital safety.
B. The generation gap in preferred types of telephone.
C. Children learning how telephone technology works.
D. Greeting-free calls spreading to even younger children.
D
You’re at a theme park. After a 45-minute wait in the heat, your feet ache and you wonder why you’re bothering. But then you get on the ride. It’s thrilling. You reach the peak (顶峰) of the rollercoaster and let out an excited roar. You step off and feel alive. The irritation of the queue couldn’t be further from your mind.
This illustrates the peak-end rule, a psychological bias (心理偏差) where we judge an experience based on how we felt at its most intense moment (the peak) and its conclusion (the end), rather than an average of how we felt throughout the entire experience.
The model was proposed by psychologists Barbara Fredrickson and Daniel Kahneman. In their 1993 study, participants put one hand in 14℃ water for 60 seconds. In the second trial, they put the other hand in 14℃ water for 60 seconds, and kept it there for another 30 seconds while the temperature was gradually raised to 15℃. Asked which trial they would repeat, most chose the second, despite spending longer in cold water.
Since then, the peak-end rule has been observed in many areas of life. Patients may rate painful medical procedures more favourably if they are slightly longer but end with a gradual decrease in pain. But the rule can also work the other way around. Life coach Latasha Baynham notes that a painful departure from a job can overshadow years of good work.
Our brains do this because we tend to have a better memory of highly emotional events. To break free, Baynham suggests separating what happened from what we’ve decided it means. One way is to divide a page into two columns. Write down the facts in one and the story you have attached to them in the other. “My role was removed” is a fact; “I’m not as good as I thought” is a story. Then recover the rest of the evidence and consider the whole experience.
The aim isn’t to pretend a difficult experience did not matter, but to stop one part of the story from becoming the whole truth. Becoming aware of how we subconsciously rewrite our experiences can help us find balance and self-compassion.
32. Which situation best illustrates the peak-end rule?
A. Jack enjoys every part of a concert equally.
B. Tom feels tired after studying for several hours.
C. The smell of fresh bread makes Emma feel hungry.
D. A lovely final dinner makes Lily recall a dull trip fondly.
33. Why did most participants choose the second trial in the 1993 study?
A. It lasted for a longer time.
B. It ended with less discomfort.
C. It used a more familiar method.
D. It caused less pain throughout the trial.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly discuss?
A. How the rule affects real-life judgments.
B. How job satisfaction relates to physical pain.
C. Why emotional events are remembered clearly.
D. Why longer treatments may earn higher ratings.
35. What would someone following Baynham’s advice most likely do after losing a job?
A. Put the experience aside until they feel ready to reflect.
B. View the experience as a sign they should change careers.
C. Identify who was responsible before deciding how to respond.
D. Review their overall performance before drawing conclusions.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Be a Mountain Climber
Standing on a high mountain peak can be one of the most rewarding experiences on Earth. But reaching one requires much more than determination. It demands physical fitness, proper gear (装备) and respect for nature’s power. 36
Before attempting a mountain climb, you need to get your body ready. 37 Long-distance hiking strengthens your legs and builds endurance. Regular running prepares your heart and lungs for long climbs. Start with low-altitude (低海拔的) day hikes and gradually increase the distance and altitude.
Proper boots and clothing are also essential for safe climbing. Tough, waterproof mountain boots protect your feet from sharp rocks and keep them dry in wet conditions. 38 In addition, dress in layers made of wool or other insulating (保温的) materials rather than cotton, which stays wet and can leave you cold.
39 Conditions in the mountains can change rapidly. Bright sunshine may give way to heavy rain, thick fog or heavy snow within hours. Check local weather forecasts before departure and prepare a backup plan in case conditions worsen.
Beginners must also watch for altitude sickness. At high altitudes, thinner air can cause headaches or tiredness. 40 Never climb too quickly. Move slowly and rest frequently as you gain altitude. Descend immediately if the symptoms become severe.
Mountain climbing rewards patience and careful planning. Reaching the summit is exciting, but returning safely is the real goal.
A. Break them in on short walks before a major climb.
B. The safest approach is to give your body time to adjust.
C. Sound judgment about the weather is equally important.
D. Physical training is the foundation of safe mountain climbing.
E. This means mountain climbing is mainly a test of physical strength.
F. Suitable clothing can reduce the need to plan carefully for bad weather.
G. Therefore, climbers should never set out without thorough preparation.

Summer means more free time for teenagers, and it can be tempting (诱人的) to turn to a screen. A study finds children aged 8 to 14 spend nearly three hours online daily, so it’s wise 66 (learn) when to switch off.
Dr Garth Graham explains that healthy screen use means balancing screen time with offline activities to meet the developmental 67 (need) of both the brain and the body. Screens help us learn new things, but they are only part of life, not the whole. He compares the brain to a battery: too much screen time consumes energy. A survey shows one third of young people think too much time 68 (spend) on digital devices. In many families, older children, who may be several years senior 69 their younger siblings, often find the online world attractive and prefer to stay online 70(long) than they are supposed to.
With many teens 71(ignore) the risks of excessive (过量) screen use, we should create a safe space 72 teens can talk openly about their online experiences. Research has made 73 clear that good screen habits benefit teenagers’ well-being. 74 worries many parents is that some teens lose themselves in online content. When excessive screen use leaves them upset or 75(tire), it is high time that they put down their devices and returned to real-world hobbies.
