Last night, my 6-year-old son taught me a valuable lesson that stayed with me for hours. I had been busy with work and had not spent much time with him recently. Even though he is only six and can be a bit stubborn, he is growing up fast — and that night he taught me something I didn’t expect.
While I was eating dinner, he was in the bath, and suddenly he started crying. I asked him what happened, and he said, “Shampoo got in my eyes.”
I got really worried and rushed into the bathroom. I tried to help by splashing water on his eyes, but things got worse when he rubbed his eyes with his soapy hands. I was nervous, telling him not to use his hands.
Out of the blue, he said, “Calm down, Dad!” It amazed me. I realized I was making things worse. I stopped splashing water, washed his hands, and calmly told him to cup clean water in his hands and rinse his eyes while blinking. It worked, and he felt better.
I’m not sure where he learned to stay calm, maybe from me or somewhere else. But the bigger lesson is that when we face problems, acting emotionally and quickly might not be best. Staying calm and thinking about the right solution is better.
In today’s tough job market with many people losing their jobs, it’s easy to feel worried. My son’s lesson reminded me that staying calm and taking a moment to relax can help us face challenges with a clear mind, more energy, and better solutions.
24. What happened to the author’s son last night?
A. He argued with his dad. B. He fell in the bathroom.
C. He got angry due to the meal. D. He got shampoo in his eyes.
25. Why did the situation get worse?
A. The boy rubbed his eyes with soapy hands. B. The father left the bathroom.
C. The boy refused to wash his face. D. The father used the wrong shampoo.
26. What does the underlined phrase “out of the blue” mean?
A. Secretly. B. Suddenly. C. Naturally. D. Morally.
27. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Children need more independence. B. Parents know their children best.
C. Calm thinking leads to better solutions. D. Difficulties make people stronger.

Unclear guidelines (准则) for when to keep a child at home if they are sick might play a part in the nationwide problem of students missing too much school.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an organization for doctors who treat children. It suggests that children stay at home when there are signs of sickness like fever, or when students are not well enough to attend classes. But many schools go far beyond that, offering different signs of sickness that would stop parents from sending their children to school.
Trenace has a five-year-old daughter who was sick a lot last year. The mother followed school guidelines and kept her daughter home when she had a cough, painful throat, or fever. Near the end of the year, school officials called her in to talk about why her daughter had missed so much school. “In the past, if the child didn’t have a fever, then it’s okay to send them to school,” said the mother. “But now it’s like if they have a cough, you have to keep them home.”
Children who missed school a lot found it more difficult to catch up. Missing 10 percent or more of the school year puts students at risk. Students who miss school also might miss meals, socializing with other students and teachers, physical exercise, and health care services.
Recently, the state of California decided to change their stay-at-home guideline for the autumn. The new guideline says children with low-level signs of sickness can come to school.
Noha Aboelata, who leads the Roots Health Centre in Oakland, California, said the change in guidance might have an influence. She hoped that parents and schools will learn about the new guidance and that students will miss less school. “The most important place for our kids to be is school,” she said.
28. What role does the first paragraph play in the passage?
A. It explains how missing school affects children.
B. It challenges medical advice about children’s illnesses.
C. It describes a parent’s disagreement with school officials.
D. It proposes a possible cause of widespread school absences.
29. What problem does Trenace’s experience illustrate?
A. Parents often ignore rules about fever. B. Schools may have stricter stay-at-home rules.
C. Most students miss school to avoid classes. D. Teachers decide when sick children return to school.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about missing school?
A. Its lasting value. B. Its common cause.
C. Its social background. D. Its negative influence.
31. What does Noha Aboelata say about the new rule?
A. It will play an active role. B. It will come to an end soon.
C. It will make no sense to kids. D. It will leave parents surprised.
D
Teenagers who have close, secure relationships with their families are more likely to extend empathy (同理心) to their peers, according to a new study.
The study, conducted at the University of Virginia’s Adolescent Research Group, followed 174 adolescents from the ages of 14 to 18 to track their progress annually. At age 14, researchers interviewed the teens regarding their family relationships using a modified version of the Adult Attachment Interview, which is considered the “gold standard” of assessing one’s attachment state of mind. Jessica Stern, lead author of the study, said this motivated the teens to share descriptions and stories about their families. Researchers paid attention to not only what the teens said but also how they expressed it.
After these initial interviews, researchers went back to the participants at ages 16, 17 and 18 and observed their interactions with a close friend. The researchers noted how the participants responded when their friend presented a problem and revealed it to them, assessing the participants’ extension of empathy. Teens who had more secure family relationships showed higher empathy toward their friends at ages 16 and 17 than less secure teens. It’s not all bad news, though, because the less secure teens “caught up” in their empathic behavior by age 18. This is cause for hope, Stern said, because it may indicate that those empathic skills can develop over time for adolescents who don’t have great relationships at home. Having strong friendships or a trusted teacher might make an impact on insecure teens’ empathy.
More research is being conducted on this particular group of participants, who are now in their mid-30s. The researchers are interested in seeing how the empathic abilities they examined in the teens now shape their romantic relationships and parenting behavior as adults. Being able to pick up on other people’s emotions and see from their point of view is important “for a variety of other things that we consider success in the world,” Stern said.
For parents and even teachers, Stern advises understanding the necessity of empathy and really investing in relationships with teens. Providing models of empathic behavior, including treating others with kindness, respect and support, can help adolescents internalize that behavior.
32. What do we know about the research?
A. It was a long-term study.
B. It revealed gender differences.
C. It involved big data analysis.
D. It explored problem-solving strategies.
33. What can be inferred about the less secure teens during the study?
A. They showed a decline in empathy.
B. They became more eager for empathy.
C. They maintained consistent levels of empathy.
D. They initially struggled but improved in empathy.
34. What would help adolescents develop empathy according to the last paragraph?
A. Demonstrating empathy in action.
B. Rewarding their progress in empathy.
C. Engaging them in classroom discussions.
D. Monitoring their interpersonal relationships.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The power of empathy for future success.
B. Teenagers’ empathy linked to family bonds.
C. The impact of friendship on adolescent empathy.
D. Attachment theory and teens’ empathy development.
I run a lot of writing workshops in secondary schools and what I often see is this: teenagers in class just look at the blank page and freeze. Even when I assure them they can’t get it wrong in creative writing, they still pause and feel painful, looking to me for clear and definite instructions. This behavior results from their training to mimic (模仿). ___36___ In time, they are terrified of getting things wrong and risking failure. Creativity is no longer advocated and is even viewed as a soft skill, or even a weakness.
However, creativity is highly valued by employers. According to The Conversation, creativity has been the number-one skill demanded by 20 million job ads on LinkedIn for two years in a row. ___37___ Due to limited educational resources and assessment pressures, teenagers’ thinking becomes increasingly narrow, leaving them afraid to explore other possibilities.
___38___ It’s just an ability to make new connections and follow where they go. Actually, creativity requires qualities available to us all: courage, observation, curiosity, flexibility and perseverance.
So how do we help teenagers be hopeful and brave? Firstly, we need to avoid the idea that their entire futures depend on this very assignment or that decision. ___39___ There is no right way to live a life. Secondly, let’s encourage inquiry. Children are naturally curious, but this curiosity often fades as they grow older, although it still exists within them. Just because they lack answers doesn’t mean they shouldn’t ask questions; rather, they should ask even more. ___40___
Young people need reminding that their stories haven’t been written. They need opportunities to try new things. They need permission to keep asking “what else is possible?” because anything is.
A. But in schools, it is different.
B. Being creative isn’t a magical skill.
C. It allows us to understand their feelings better.
D. They know it is a safe way to get good grades.
E. The main problem is how to keep those creative juices flowing.
F. Life is long enough to try many things, and to change directions.
G. The universe is held together with unanswered questions and endless possibilities.

M: What if I took you there before going to the repair shop? Would that do?

Well, we certainly have a busy day ahead of us, so let’s get started, shall we? Let’s have a look at the map of the museum now.
The door on the right of the entrance hall leads into the gift shop and ticket center. Once we pick up our entrance tickets, I’d ask everyone to put their bags and coats in the storage area.
Now, once you come back into the entrance hall, the door on the opposite side to the gift shop leads into the art gallery. There is a special exhibition there at the moment. If you continue on up the entrance hallway that leads into the main exhibition center, on the back left-hand side, there are some toilets. Beside the toilets, you’ll find the 3D theater. I strongly recommend that you make time for the 30-minute presentation in the theater.
Running along the right-hand side of the main exhibition center is the Modern Art Studio. Here, not only can you view some of the most famous works of the 20th century, but you can also attend a workshop run by a local artist. OK, that’s the art museum.

D 25. A 26. B 27. C

D 29. B 30. D 31. A

根据第三段“Trenace has a five-year-old daughter who was sick a lot last year. “But now it’s like if they have a cough, you have to keep them home.”(Trenace有一个五岁的女儿,她去年经常生病。这位母亲遵循学校准则,在女儿咳嗽、喉咙痛或发烧时让她留在家里。临近学年末,学校官员叫她来谈话,询问她女儿为什么缺了这么多课。“过去,如果孩子没有发烧,那送他们去学校是可以的,”这位母亲说。“但现在好像如果他们咳嗽,你就必须让他们待在家里。”)”可知,Trenace的经历说明学校可能有更严格的居家规定。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Children who missed school a lot found it more difficult to catch up. Missing 10 percent or more of the school year puts students at risk. Students who miss school also might miss meals, socializing with other students and teachers, physical exercise, and health care services.(缺课多的孩子发现更难跟上。缺课达到学年的10%或更多会让学生处于风险之中。缺课的学生还可能错过餐食、与其他学生和老师的社交、体育锻炼以及医疗保健服务)”可知,第四段主要讲述缺课带来的负面影响。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Noha Aboelata, who leads the Roots Health Centre in Oakland, California, said the change in guidance might have an influence. She hoped that parents and schools will learn about the new guidance and that students will miss less school. “The most important place for our kids to be is school,” she said.(加利福尼亚州奥克兰Roots健康中心的负责人诺哈·阿博埃拉塔说,准则的改变可能会产生影响。她希望家长和学校了解新准则,学生将缺更少的课。“对我们的孩子来说,最重要的地方是学校,”她说。)”可知,诺哈·阿博埃拉塔认为新规定将发挥积极作用。
A 33. D 34. A 35. B
根据第二段第一句“The study, conducted at the University of Virginia’s Adolescent Research Group, followed 174 adolescents from the ages of 14 to 18 to track their progress annually.(这项由弗吉尼亚大学青少年研究小组进行的研究,跟踪了 174 名年龄在 14 岁至 18 岁之间的青少年,并每年追踪他们的进展情况。)”以及第四段第一句“More research is being conducted on this particular group of participants, who are now in their mid-30s.(目前正在对这一特定的参与者群体进行更多的研究,他们现在都已步入30多岁。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段第三句“Teens who had more secure family relationships showed higher empathy toward their friends at ages 16 and 17 than less secure teens.(与家庭关系不太稳固的青少年相比,在16岁和17岁时,家庭关系更稳固的青少年对朋友表现出更高的同理心。)”以及第四句“It’s not all bad news, though, because the less secure teens ‘caught up’ in their empathic behavior by age 18.(不过,这也不全是坏消息,因为到18岁时,家庭关系不太稳固的青少年在同理心行为方面‘赶上了’。)”
根据最后一段最后一句“Providing models of empathic behavior, including treating others with kindness, respect and support, can help adolescents internalize that behavior.(提供同理心行为的榜样,包括以友善、尊重和支持的态度对待他人,可以帮助青少年将这种行为内化。)” 故选A项。
根据第一段“Teenagers who have close, secure relationships with their families are more likely to extend empathy (同理心) to their peers, according to a new study.(一项新的研究表明,与家人关系亲密、稳固的青少年更有可能对同龄人表现出同理心。)”
D 37. A 38. B 39. F 40. G
根据前文“I run a lot of writing workshops in secondary schools and what I often see is this: teenagers in class just look at the blank page and freeze. Even when I assure them they can’t get it wrong in creative writing, they still pause and feel painful, looking to me for clear and definite instructions. This behavior results from their training to mimic (模仿). (我在中学举办了很多写作研讨会,我经常看到这样的情况:青少年在课堂上只是看着空白页,然后僵住了。即使我向他们保证,他们在创意写作中不会出错,他们仍然会停下来,感到痛苦,向我寻求清晰明确的指导。这种行为源于它们的模仿训练。)”可知,D项“They know it is a safe way to get good grades. (他们知道这是获得好成绩的安全方法)”是对前文行为的进一步解释。故选D项。
【37题详解】
根据前文“However, creativity is highly valued by employers. According to The Conversation, creativity has been the number-one skill demanded by 20 million job ads on LinkedIn for two years in a row. (然而,创造力受到雇主的高度重视。据The Conversation网站报道,连续两年,在领英(LinkedIn)上的2000万个招聘广告中,创造力一直是最需要的技能。)”以及后文“Due to limited educational resources and assessment pressures, teenagers’ thinking becomes increasingly narrow, leaving them afraid to explore other possibilities. (由于有限的教育资源和考核压力,青少年的思维变得越来越狭隘,使他们不敢探索其他的可能性。)”可知前文讲述,工作中需要有创造力,后文讲述由于有限的教育资源和考核压力,青少年的思维变得越来越狭隘,所以前后文是转折关系,A项“But in schools, it is different. (但在学校,情况就不同了。)”符合文意,和前文构成转折关系,引出后文。故选A项。
分析设空,位于段首,应是本段的中心句,根据后文“It’s just an ability to make new connections and follow where they go. Actually, creativity requires qualities available to us all: courage, observation, curiosity, flexibility and perseverance. (这只是一种建立新关系并跟随他们前进的能力。实际上,创造力需要我们所有人都具备的品质:勇气、观察力、好奇心、灵活性和毅力。)”可知,本段在介绍什么是创造力,所以B项“Being creative isn’t a magical skill. (创造力并不是一种神奇的技能。)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选B项。
【39题详解】
根据前文“So how do we help teenagers be hopeful and brave? Firstly, we need to avoid the idea that their entire futures depend on this very assignment or that decision. (那么我们如何帮助青少年充满希望和勇敢呢?首先,我们需要避免这样的想法,即他们的整个未来取决于这个任务或那个决定。)”以及后文“There is no right way to live a life. (没有正确的生活方式。)”可知,此处在讲述,没有特定的方法帮助青少年充满希望和勇敢,所以F项“Life is long enough to try many things, and to change directions. (生命足够长,可以尝试很多事情,也可以改变方向。)”承接上文,下文则是对本句的进一步解释。故选F项。
【40题详解】
空处位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Secondly, let’s encourage inquiry. Children are naturally curious, but this curiosity often fades as they grow older, although it still exists within them. Just because they lack answers doesn’t mean they shouldn’t ask questions; rather, they should ask even more. (其次,让我们鼓励询问。孩子们天生好奇,但这种好奇心往往随着年龄的增长而消失,尽管它仍然存在于他们心中。仅仅因为他们没有答案并不意味着他们不应该问问题;相反,他们应该要求更多。)”可知,此处讲述鼓励孩子的好奇心,所以G项“The universe is held together with unanswered questions and endless possibilities. (宇宙是由未解之谜和无限可能性组成的。)”符合此处主题,是对前文的总结。故选G项。
第三节 完形填空 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

My Favorite Place on Campus
My favorite place on campus is the school library. It is bright, quiet and filled with books. I often go there after class.
I love it for two reasons. First, it is a perfect place to study. When I have difficulty with a subject, I can find useful books or discuss problems with my classmates. Second, reading there helps me relax after a busy day. I always leave the library feeling calmer and more confident.
For me, the library is not only a place to read, but also a place to grow.

My Favorite Place on Campus
Tucked away beside the teaching building, the small garden is my favorite place on campus. Although it is not large, its shady trees, winding path and seasonal flowers make it feel peaceful.
What draws me there most is the sense of calm it offers. After a demanding class, a few quiet minutes on the bench help me clear my mind and regain energy. It is also where my friends and I exchange ideas, encourage one another and sometimes plan class activities.

Let's have a look at the map of the museum. Now the door on the right of the entrance hall leads into the gift shop and ticket center once we pick up our entrance tickets, i'd ask everyone to put their bags and coats in the storage area. Now once you come back into the entrance hall, the door on the opposite side to the gift shop leads into the art gallery. There is a special exhibition there at the moment. If you continue on up the entrance hallway that leads into the main exhibition center, on the back left hand side, there are some toilets. Beside the toilets, you'll find the three d theatre. I strongly recommend that you make time for the thirty minute presentation in the theatre running along the right hand side of the main exhibition center is the modern art studio. Here, not only can you view some of the most famous works of the twenty eth century, but you can also attend the workshop run by a local artist. Okay, that's the art museum.
