The Chinese idiom"mo shou cheng gur",which means "sticking to old
rules",1 a cool story behind it.Long ago, during the Warring States
Period, there lived a very smart man named Mozi.He was great at making
tools and knew a lot about keeping cities safe from attacks.
At the same time, there was another 2 man called Gongshu Ban.
He was famous for making strong war machines. One day,Gongshu Ban made
new and powerful machines to attack a city.He thought he would definitely
win 3 these amazing tools.
Mozi didn't want the war4.So he went to see Gongshu Ban and
:said,Let's do a simulation(模拟测试)on a table..You pretend to attack with
your5,and I'll try to stop you."In this test,Mozi used simple things
and his clever mind.No matter how many times Gongshu Ban attacked,Mozi
always found ways to protect the "city".Gongshu Ban tried nine different
attacks,yet Mozi blocked each one6.
After failing again and again,he realized that no matter how powerful his
war machines were,Mozi's 7 was unbeatable.Finally,he had
to 8 his plan to attack the city.Over time, people started using "Mozi's
defense"to describe those who strictly followed old methods and refused to
accept new ideas, just like someone who only counts on old rules and never
tries new ways. That's 9the idiom was born.
Today, when we say someone "sticks to old rules",we mean they
10 change their ways, even if there are better options.Remember:It's
good to learn from history, but we should also be brave enough to try new
things!

On a hot summer afternoon, cities and towns are usually hotter than the
nearby countryside areas. This is not just a feeling. Some cities can be as much
as7 C hotter..Scientists call this the "urban heat island'”effect(城市热岛效
应).
This effect is closely connected with the materials used in city buildings,
which usually take in large amounts of heat from sunlight during the day.
Instead of cooling quickly after sunset, these materials slowly give out the
stored heat back into the air.As a result, cities remain warm for a lot longer. In
certain situations, high temperatures can even be deadly.
To cut urban heat, many cities have turned to trees, which work like natural
air conditioners in two main ways.First, they provide shade ()preventing
streets and buildings from heating up too much.Second, trees cool the air
through a process called transpiration-water inside the leaves enters the air,
lowering temperatures nearby.
To understand how effective trees really are, researchers studied air
temperature and tree cover data (from nearly 9,000 cities and the
findings were surprising.Trees reduce the"urban heat island"effect by almost
50%all over the world.Since cities are usually 1 ~3C hotter than nearby
countryside areas, trees can lower temperatures by about 0.5~1.5C in many
places, which can have an influence on city heat during the long hot summer.
However, scientists warn that planting trees alone cannot completely solve
the problem.Even with large planting projects, urban trees may cut down only
a bit of heat by the middle of this century.Because of this, experts believe
cities need more solutions. For example, reflective building materials can help.
At the same time, ways of cutting greenhouse gas remain necessary.
Trees are powerful and valuable. They cool cities, improve air quality and
make urban life more comfortable. But in a warming world, they work best as
part of a larger plan rather than as the only answer.
21.What makes cities hotter than countryside areas?

A.To collect the data of tree cover.
B.To show the influence of trees.

Most people agree that, when it comes to exercise, the harder you train, the
fitter you become. But did you realise when you exercise also matters?
26
Many people think the morning is the best time for exercise, because they
have more energy then and they feel less and less active as the day progresses.
27__Our bodies have natural rhythms(节律),so the best time of day
to exercise is different for different people.
It also depends on what your goal is.Recent research suggests that the
higher your body's temperature,the better your performance.28
So
it could be the best time for a workout. However,if you want to lose weight,
the best time of day to exercise is early in the morning.29 And if
your aim is simply to keep physically healthy, then a long walk is OK-at
any time of day.
Be careful,though.30You would like to train harder and harder
as you start to feel fitter, but remember that the more you exercise, the higher
the risk of getting hurt.Overall,it's far safer to do a small amount of exercise
regularly.Your workout will be a little easier each day,and as you get fitter,it
will become more and more enjoyable.
6
A.We should keep exercising every day.
B.However,it is not quite as simple as that.
C.That's when your body will burn most energy.
D.It can be as important as how much exercise you do.
E.Most people's temperature is highest in the late afternoon.
F.Doing too much exercise can be almost as bad as not doing enough.

Which is better?
Clearly, the number one reason that people choose to work with a GPS
unit is the feeling of freedom. With a GPS unit in your pocket or car,it's easy
for you to find your way.If you do get lost, then the GPS will quickly find
routes((路线)for you.
Besides, having a GPS unit is like bringing every single map of the world
along with you!It knows where famous buildings are and the best routes to
them. And you will always know exactly where you are, down to the mile.
However,GPS has some shortcomings as well. For example,a GPS unit
may take you into a traffic jam,go offline if a satellite (fails,or run out
of batteries ()Some GPS units may even take you around in circles,
wasting your time.
While GPS has its draws, many people still prefer traditional maps. They
don't require any power,so people don't need to worry about getting lost after
running out of batteries. In this case,old-fashioned maps seem to be the
winner for remote travel.
Maps are also easy to draw on,making it effortless to mark
destinations((目的地)or plan routes. You can even give the map away or let
someone borrow it without fear of losing an expensive device.
Even so,traditional maps also have some problems. They can get
outdated,be easily broken, and go missing unexpectedly. And people need to
bring their own light source and plan routes themselves.
In a word,,both GPS and paper maps have their pros and cons(利弊),so
it's up to you to decide which method is better to use.No matter which one
you choose,be sure to travel safely and enjoy the trip.

surprising decision:he returned to his birthplace,Tianjin, and settled()
there after getting a degree in science at the age of 23.Back in Tianjin,Liddell
worked as a science and PE teacher at a school. To this day, many people are
still confused by his choice.
By 1941,life in China had become dangerous because of the Japanese
threat.Liddell, however, didn't choose to escape but stayed to work as a
medical worker in a village in Hebei,North China. There he provided medical
treatment for suffering locals.
In 1943,he was captured()by the Japanese army and sent to a
concentration camp )There,Liddell taught science and organized
