There was always a part of me that I wanted to disappear. I wanted to remove it and wash my hands clean. But it’s stuck. Stuck in my brain, stuck in my name, stuck on my skin.
Being Pakistani (巴基斯坦人), I am lucky to have thick hair and sun-kissed skin. At school, I was made fun of for my skin color and different culture. Even my grandmother suggested: “bathe in milk to become fair.” I wanted to simply fit in with my friends. Growing up in America was hard as a person of color. It was easier to be accepted if my appearance matched “American” culture.
At fifteen, everything changed at a family wedding. I was only a watcher before; this time I saw what happened behind the scenes (场面). I was unsure, but being around excited Pakistanis made me curious.
After a week of wedding celebrations, I took time to understand our traditions. My grandparents taught me about many different events, and I tried biryani (手抓饭) for the first time. I began to love the beautiful, colorful dresses and the planned dances.
By the end of the week, I learned culture goes deeper than looks. I began to look at myself with pride and love, accepting my identity as a Pakistani-American. Once I accepted the part of myself Ialways wished would disappear, and I learned how to live with both American and Pakistani influences.
College offered a new beginning. Wanting to find a group that celebrated being Pakistani led me to join the Pakistani Students Association. My favorite part of the club is the differences among the same group of people. I got to explore parts of Pakistani culture I didn’t know before.
My way of thinking changed from erasing the culture I was born into to celebrating Pakistani culture filled with color and spice (香料), beauty and love. I have learned that we must celebrate our different cultures and identities. I am no longer a girl who refuses to accept, I am a girl who works hard to celebrate.
24.How did the author feel as a child?
A.She enjoyed being different. B.She was proud of Pakistani customs.
C.She was eager to have Pakistani friends. D.She wished to change her appearance.
25.Why did the grandmother suggest bathing in milk?
A.To follow Pakistani traditions.
B.To meet American beauty standards.
C.To protect the author from bullying
D.To improve the author’s skin health.
26.What caused the author’s attitude change?
A.Attending college. B.Joining a school club.
C.Getting close to her culture. D.Moving away from her family.
27.What can we learn from the author’s story?
A.Hard work will pay off one day.
B.Fitting in matters more than heritage.
C.Cultural traditions are always attractive.
D.Identity acceptance brings personal growth.
C
My studies once showed that students perform better when they take notes by hand than when they use laptops. Before I knew it, those studies were used as good reasons for laptop bans (禁止) in classrooms in the U.S. I received a lot of emails blaming (责备) me for such ideas. The fact is that I don’t actually support laptop bans, and never have. In fact, I don’t even ban laptops in my own classes.
In the research, we asked students to watch TED Talks and had them take notes either on laptops or with a pen and paper. Students using laptops recorded the talks nearly with every word, while students who took handwritten notes could not; they just took notes in their own words. Writing by hand required students to understand and summarize the talk. And deeper processing (加工) of the information led to improved learning. As a result, students in this case get higher points on tests.
My findings came out. Teachers around the country soon started banning laptops in their classes. But they didn’t know what actually made learning difficult was the mindless recording of a lecture. Laptops just allowed students to take notes more quickly.
Like most technology, laptops are not universally helpful or harmful in class. Whether they are helpful or harmful depends on the aim. The value of a laptop in the classroom depends on the goal of a lesson plan, the nature of the text, the kind of students being taught, etc.
So can laptops be used in the classroom? If a lesson requires exact quotes, then laptops are excellent. But if the goal is conceptual (概念的) understanding, they will produce the exactly opposite results. Don’t forget the situation when deciding whether or not to allow laptops in your class. All in all, the answer to the question is that it depends.
28.Why did the author receive many blaming emails?
A.He banned laptops in classes.
B.His studies supported laptop bans.
C.His research results let people down.
D.Schools used his studies to ban laptops.
29.What was the key difference between laptop notes and handwritten notes in the research?
A.Laptop notes were much more detailed.
B.Handwritten notes bettered thinking ability.
C.Handwritten notes recorded every word in need.
D.Laptop notes were written in students’ own words.
30.What did the author think made learning difficult in the case of laptop use?
A.The technology of laptops itself.
B.Students’ improper use of laptops.
C.The speed of taking notes with laptops.
D.The design of lesson plans for laptop users.
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Handwritten notes are better for students’ learning than laptop notes.
B.Laptop bans in classrooms are unreasonable and should be prohibited.
C.The use of laptops in classrooms should be decided based on situations.
D.Research on note-taking methods helps improve teaching achievements.
D
A recent study from the University of Minnesota has discovered a simple and powerful way to improve student learning: more natural light. The research team found that students in classrooms with large windows and plenty of sunlight showed considerably better learning performance and focus levels, compared to those in classrooms with smaller windows or primarily artificial (人工的) lighting.
Dr. Emily Carter, the lead researcher, explained the findings. “We’ve long believed that environment matters, but this study provides strong evidence (证据) specifically for natural light,” she said. “It’s not just about seeing better; it’s about the biological influence of sunlight on our focus and mood. This could be a game-changer for how we design schools.” She added that spending money on better window design and skylights could be a cost-effective way to improve students’ learning performance.
The study involved 101 students from three local high schools. Each student took part in learning sessions held in two different classroom environments on separate days: one was a “bright” room with large windows allowing plenty of sunlight, and the other was a “standard” room with smaller windows and relying mostly on ceiling lights. The students completed reading comprehension tasks and memory tests during each session. To ensure fairness, the order in which students experienced the rooms was randomized (随机安排), and the tasks were of similar difficulty.
The results were clear. On average, students scored 10% higher on the memory tests and reported feeling more focused and less tired in the “bright” classroom. Dr. Carter and her team believe these findings offer practical guidance. They suggest that school planners should think about how to get more natural light when designing new school buildings. For existing buildings, simple changes, like moving desks closer to windows or using lighter curtains to allow more light in, can make a real difference.
32.What is the main finding of the study?
A.Students prefer classrooms with more outside view.
B.Large windows can make it hard for students to focus.
C.Artificial lighting is harmful to students’ eyesight over time.
D.Classrooms with more natural light improve student learning.
33.What does the underlined word “game-changer” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Something that makes a big difference. B.A game that can be played indoors.
C.A challenge difficult to overcome. D.A project expensive to complete.
34.What is the main purpose of paragraph 3?
A.To introduce the researchers. B.To present the students’ opinions.
C.To describe the research methods. D.To discuss the cost of the changes.
35.What do the researchers suggest based on their study?
A.Schools should stop using all artificial lights.
B.Students should spend more time outdoors.
C.Classrooms should be painted in brighter colors.
D.School design should make better use of natural light.
Taking notes is a key skill for students, but not all note-taking methods are equally effective. The right approach can boost your understanding and memory of what you learn. 36 First, figure out what’s most important in a lecture or reading. Teachers often emphasize key points, and textbooks have headings or bold text for important information.
37 Instead of writing every word, use abbreviations (缩略词), symbols, or short phrases. For example, “govt” for “government” or “→” for “leads to”. This saves time and keeps your notes concise. Also, organize your notes with headings and subheadings. This structure makes it easier to review later.
Another tip is to leave space in your notes. This way, you have room to expand on ideas later. 38 Some students find using different colors helpful — highlighting key terms or ideas makes them stand out.
39 Revision helps you identify gaps in your understanding. Just reading them once after class isn’t enough. Revise them a few days later, and then weekly. This repetition helps move information from short-term to long-term memory.
Finally, adapt your note-taking to different subjects. 40 Math notes might focus on formulas and problem steps, while history notes emphasize dates and events. By tailoring your method, you’ll make the most of your note-taking.
A.Keep your notes brief and to the point.
B.Don’t forget to review your notes regularly.
C.Here are some strategies to take better notes.
D.Note-taking should match the subject’s needs.
E.Good notes should be easy to read and follow.
F.Writing down everything will make you miss important points.
G.You can add extra details, questions, or examples when you review.

There are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea. First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular group. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody 56 (have) to worry about fashion (时尚). Everybody wears 57 same style of clothes. Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways. A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth 58 gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or 59 (cycle) to school on dark mornings, car drivers can 60 (easy) see them.
But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer 61 this question is not clear. One study in America found that students’ grades 62 (improve) a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn’t want 63 (wear) the uniform. Other American studies showed no connections between uniforms 64 school performance.
School uniforms are 65 (tradition) in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them. Some very good schools don’t have a uniform policy. However, uniforms are still popular. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

With merely one week remaining before the school’s annual talent show, Jack felt extremely tense just thinking about it. Mr. Mike, his English teacher, had inspired him to participate in the speech contest.“ Your pronunciation is great,” Mr. Mike had said, patting him on the shoulder. Yet Jack understood his own reality: he often forgot his lines (台词) when speaking in public or when he was nervous.
Every afternoon after class, Jack stayed in the empty classroom, practicing alone. He marked his lines with colored pens and spoke the lines to the silent walls. Sometimes he pretended Mr. Mike was sitting in the front row, nodding approvingly.
The big day finally arrived. Jack’s legs were shaking as he waited on the backstage. Through the curtains, he saw the sea of faces in the hall. Suddenly, a staff member rushed in.“ We need to cut two minutes from each speech” Jack’s heart sank — his carefully timed lines now had a gaping hole. He didn’t know what contents should be cut off.
He froze there. Just at that time, Mr. Mike appeared beside him.“ Think of it as a chance to adapt to the change,” the teacher said softly.“ If you don’t know what to talk about, you can TELL YOUR STORY.” But Jack’s mind went blank. When his name was called, he stumbled (跌跌撞撞) onto the stage, microphone trembling (颤抖) in his hand.
The first sentence came out shakily. Then disaster struck. Jack forgot all his lines. The audience shifted in their seats and waited for his next sentence. With so many eyes fixed on him, his face went red and his throat tightened. He wanted to run from the stage.注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

W: Thanks!

W: Mind-mapping might help you organise your thoughts.
M: Mind-mapping?

W: That’s great. so long as you listen to it with your headphones on!

W: And I guess Katie can fix anything made from fabric?
M: Exactly. Meanwhile, I’m responsible for anything made from wood and metal.
W: Very environmentally friendly! So what’s the business plan? Customers will pay you to fix their stuff?
M: Yes, we will offer repair services, but probably the main aim will be teaching people to do their own repairs—mostly online, but we’ll also run some in-person classes.
W: And when something is beyond repair, you could turn it into art!
M: Great idea!

W: Yes. We each have to complete 25 hours of voluntary work in order to graduate. Our new head-teacher introduced the programme last year.
M: Wow, interesting! Has it been popular with the students?
W: Some of us weren’t happy at first, but everyone is on board now. Personally, I was a big fan of the idea from the start.
M: Really?
W: Yeah. In fact, I’d thought about volunteering before, but it wasn’t easy to fit it in around school time and my weekend job. Now I get to leave school early every Thursday to go to the animal shelter.
M: That’s so cool! Do your friends work there with you?
W: No, we all do different things. Sarah volunteers at a retirement home, Dan works with disabled kids, and Mike works a shift at a food bank every Friday morning.
M: Wow, that’s important work. Food banks feed some of the poorest in our community.
W: True. The programme has really opened our eyes to the world's problems, and I think we’re more caring as a result.
C 19. B 20. C
Is everybody on board? Great! Please take your seats and let's get going. I won’t talk for long, as our destination is only a 20-minute bus ride from our hotel here in central Stockholm. Today we’re visiting Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum. As a “living museum,” Skansen provides us with a picture of ordinary Swedish life before the Industrial Age. The site features over 150 historical buildings brought to the museum from all over the country. Activities take place each day in both Swedish and English; they are given by actors in traditional costume, which really brings the history to life. Skansen is the world’s only open-air museum with wild animals, and the Nordic Zoo features many types of local wildlife such as deer and bears. There’s also a Children’s Zoo. The Skansen Aquarium also has fish, plus many other creatures such as snakes, insects and monkeys! Unfortunately, this isn’t included in our entry price, but adult tickets cost just 160 kronor—about 20 of your Canadian dollars.

根据第二段中“Even my grandmother suggested: “bathe in milk to become fair.”(甚至我的祖母也建议:“用牛奶洗澡来变白。”)”以及“It was easier to be accepted if my appearance matched “American” culture.(如果我的外表符合“美国”文化,就更容易被接受)”可知,祖母建议用牛奶洗澡是为了变白,以迎合美国的审美标准。
根据第四段中“After a week of wedding celebrations, I took time to understand our traditions.(经过一周的婚礼庆祝,我花时间去了解我们的传统)”以及第五段中“By the end of the week, I learned culture goes deeper than looks.(到周末结束时,我明白了文化比外表更深沉)”可知,接触并了解自身的文化传统导致了作者态度的转变。
纵观全文,根据第一段“I wanted to remove it and wash my hands clean.(我想要将其清除,让自己彻底摆脱这一切)”可知,作者从最初希望洗去肤色、摆脱巴基斯坦身份,到最后“I began to look at myself with pride and love, accepting my identity as a Pakistani-American.(我开始带着骄傲和爱看待自己,接受我作为巴基斯坦裔美国人的身份)”,并最终致力于庆祝多元文化。

根据第一段“Before I knew it, those studies were used as good reasons for laptop bans (禁止) in classrooms in the U.S. I received a lot of emails blaming (责备) me for such ideas. (我还没反应过来,这些研究就被用作美国课堂禁止使用笔记本电脑的充分理由。我收到了很多邮件,都因为这些想法而责备我)”可知,作者收到很多责备邮件是因为学校用他的研究来禁止笔记本电脑。故选D。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Students using laptops recorded the talks nearly with every word, while students who took handwritten notes could not; they just took notes in their own words. Writing by hand required students to understand and summarize the talk. And deeper processing (加工) of the information led to improved learning. (使用笔记本电脑的学生几乎逐字记录了演讲内容,而手写笔记的学生则无法做到;他们只是用自己的话做笔记。手写要求学生理解并总结演讲内容,而对信息的更深层次加工则有助于提升学习效果)”可知,研究中笔记本电脑记笔记和手写记笔记的关键区别是手写笔记能提升思考能力,因为需要理解和总结。故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段“But they didn’t know what actually made learning difficult was the mindless recording of a lecture. Laptops just allowed students to take notes more quickly. (但他们不知道,真正导致学习困难的是对讲座内容的盲目记录,笔记本电脑只是让学生记笔记的速度更快了而已)”可知,作者认为是学生对笔记本电脑的不当使用(盲目记录)导致学习困难。故选B。
31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Don’t forget the situation when deciding whether or not to allow laptops in your class. All in all, the answer to the question is that it depends. (在决定是否允许学生在课堂上使用笔记本电脑时,不要忽视具体场景。总而言之,这个问题的答案是“视情况而定”)”可知,文章主要观点是课堂上使用笔记本电脑应根据情况决定。故选C。

(这不仅仅是看得更清楚;这与阳光对我们的注意力和情绪的生物学影响有关。)”强调自然光的重要意义,画线词的下文“She added that spending money on better window design and skylights could be a cost-effective way to improve students’ learning performance. 故选A项。
根据第三段“The study involved 101 students from three local high schools.
根据最后一段中“They suggest that school planners should think about how to get more natural light when designing new school buildings. (他们建议学校规划者在设计新校舍时应该考虑如何获得更多的自然光。)”可知,研究者建议学校设计应更好地利用自然光。故选D项。

Just then, he noticed Mr. Mike looking at him full of expectation. Mr. Mike’s eyes sparkled with encouragement, and he made a gentle “come on” gesture with his hand. Jack’s racing heart slowed a little — he thought of those afternoons practicing alone, the colored marks on his script, and his teacher’s constant support. Taking a shaky but deep breath, he gripped the microphone tightly, his fingers no longer trembling. Instead of struggling to recall the prepared lines, he started talking about his fear of public speaking and how he’d pushed himself to practice every day. His voice grew steadier as he spoke from the heart, eyes shining with sincerity.
When he finished his speech, a great round of applause filled the hall. Jack stood frozen for a moment, unable to believe the warm response. The audience’s cheers echoed in his ears, and he felt a surge of joy and relief rushing through his body. He bowed deeply, his face breaking into a bright smile. As he stepped off the stage, Mr. Mike pulled him into a firm hug. “You told the most wonderful story,” the teacher said proudly. Jack’s nervousness had vanished completely, replaced by a sense of achievement he would never forget.
