Recently, Michaela Benthaus, a 33-year-old German engineer, made history as the first wheelchair user to travel to space. Her dream-come-true journey took her beyond the clouds along with five other passengers, showing the world that anything is possible.
Seven years ago, a mountain bike accident changed Michaela’s life. She lost the ability to walk, but she never lost her dream of seeing the stars. Thanks to a company called Blue Origin, her dream finally came true.
As the rocket soared (升空) 105 km high, Michaela left her wheelchair on the ground. For the first time, she felt weightless. Inside the capsule (太空舱), she laughed with joy and even tried to turn upside down while looking at the Earth from above. “It was the coolest experience,” she said happily after landing.
The 10-minute flight took place in a special capsule called New Shepard. The company designed it to be accessible for everyone. To help Michaela, the company added a special board so she could move from the door to her seat. At the launch pad (发射台), a lift carried her to the top of the rocket.
Before this flight, Michaela believed space was only for “super healthy” people. She hoped her trip would prove to the world that people with disabilities belong in space, too. “I hope I’m only the start,” she said.
When the capsule returned, her wheelchair was waiting for her. “You should never give up on your dreams,” Michaela said.

Besides golden yellow, can gold show other colors? Can water reach 0℃ without turning into ice? Yes and yes. Welcome to the world of nanogeochemistry Professor Wan works at an institute in Guizhou. He is a leading scientist in this research field.
“Nanogeochemistry is a field that bridges nanotechnology (纳米科技) and geochemistry (地球化学),” said Wan. Nanotechnology looks at things as tiny as one-billionth (十亿分之一) of a meter, while geochemistry studies Earth from a chemical point of view. You might think it seems strange to mix these two fields. But Chinese scientists have thought about it since the 1990s, Wan noted. One reason is that high-technology products, especially computers and smartphone chips (芯片), keep getting smaller but more powerful.
“Nanogeochemistry tries to understand how tiny things form and spread on Earth. Among them, particles (粒子) are one to 100 nanometers in size,” Wan said. That is much smaller than a human hair, which is usually 80,000 to 100,000 nanometers wide.
In the nanoworld, things act in strange ways because of quantum effects For example, if gold is made just a few nanometers big, it can shine blue, purple or even red. Another example is water. When water is placed inside nano-sized holes, it can stay liquid (液态的) even under -40 ℃.
Nanogeochemistry is important for space research. Wan’s team is studying the effects of high-speed impacts (撞击) on space bodies. This might help explain how certain metal nanoparticles formed on the moon, Mars, and so on.
29. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers. C. By asking questions. D. By using famous sayings.
30. What does Nanogeochemistry try to understand according to Paragraphs 2~3?
A. How smartphone chips were invented. B. How tiny things form and spread on Earth.
C. How nanotechnology makes human hair healthier.
D. How geochemistry helps environmental protection.
31. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Things in the nanoworld act strangely.
B. Nanogeochemistry has no use in space research.
C. Gold can only shine blue if it is made just a few nanometers big.
D. Chinese scientists started studying nanogeochemistry in the 1980s.
32. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Hopeful but Challenging: the Future of Geochemistry
B. Small but Powerful: the Importance of Nanogeochemistry
C. Stories behind Science: Achievements of Technology in China
D. The Beauty of Nature: Amazing Phenomena (现象) of the Nanoworld

Space Traveller’s Training Book
As you know, a straight line is the shortest distance between two points, and you should always watch where you are going. However, once a spacecraft leaves Earth, many rules about travelling may stop working.
Now forget all that. Let’s begin our training!
1. To Go Faster, Go Farther
To get from point a to b, a spacecraft doesn’t always travel straight in space. That
—1—
is because of the strong force of huge objects around it. The force pulls it into a curved(弯曲的 orbit. In theory, a spacecraft could fly straight all the time, but this would require too much fuel to offset (抵消) the force. Luckily, there is a better way. By following a long curved orbit, a spacecraft can use the force to reach the destination (目的地).
Although the trip is longer, the spacecraft uses less fuel and arrives sooner.
2. To Go Forward, Look Backward
This sounds really strange On Earth, we
—2—
usually travel by watching the road ahead. We change our speed or direction according to how close we are to the final position. But in space, it is just the opposite. Most spacecraft never “see” where they’re going or where they will arrive. For example, a spacecraft doesn’t see the Moon or other planets getting close. How does it know whether to go forward or not? A spacecraft can tell its position by knowing the distance it has travelled from
—3—
where it started. The starting point is usually Earth.
3. ▲
We can use a signal travelling at light-speed to check the speed. A spacecraft sends a signal to Earth. By timing how long the signal takes to travel from the spacecraft to Earth and then go back to the spacecraft, we can work out the speed.
Your training is complete. Good luck!
—4—
33. What can we know about a spacecraft from Part 1 “To Go Faster, Go Farther”?
A. It goes a shorter way to arrive sooner. B. The force from Earth decides its orbit.
C. Flying in curved orbit is a better way. D. It uses less fuel to fly straight in space.
34. Why does a spacecraft look backward when travelling in space?
A. To know how far it has travelled. B. To remember the way it has flown.
C. To find out where other planets are. D. To take a look at our beautiful Earth.
35. Which can be put in ▲ ?
A. To Return to Earth, Send a Signal B. To Check Speed, Time a Signal
C. To Know Speed, Go Back to Earth D. To Go Faster, Move at Light-speed
36. What’s the purpose of the training book?
A. To show different parts in a spacecraft. B. To remind people of the danger in space.
C. To introduce basic facts about space travel. D. To describe key steps in designing a spacecraft.

On May 3, 2024, China successfully launched the Chang’e-6 spacecraft from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan.
The moon turns at the same speed as it moves around Earth. So we always see the "near side" of the moon from Earth. The purpose of Chang'e-6 spacecraft is to collect and return samples from the far side of the moon. "No other country has done this before. Scientists will get first-hand information after Chang’e-6 spacecraft achieves its goal," said Wu Weiren, the leader of this program.
The Chang’e-6 spacecraft will make a soft landing in 48 hours, and then it will collect rocks and soil from the moon's surface. The samples will be kept sealed (密封). Finally, the spacecraft will carry them back to Earth. The journey will take about 53 days. Our goal is to collect about two kilograms of samples.
The Chang'e-6 still faces big challenges. The spacecraft will land in the SPA Basin, one of the largest impact craters(撞击坑) on the moon. The crater is more than 2,500 kilometers wide. Besides, the geography of the moon's far side causes great challenges for its landing.
The Chang'e-6 carried four payloads (载荷). They were developed through international communication and working together. It shows people that China's space program is providing more chances for the world.

C 30. B 31. A 32. B
根据文章开头“Besides golden yellow, can gold show other colors? Can water reach 0°C without turning into ice? Yes and yes.”
根据文章第三段“Nanogeochemistry tries to understand how tiny things form and spread on Earth.”
根据文章第四段“In the nanoworld, things act in strange ways because of quantum effects.”可知,纳米世界中的物质行为奇特,选项A与此表述一致;选项B与第五段“Nanogeochemistry is important for space research.”矛盾;选项C过于绝对,原文说“can shine blue, purple or even red”;选项D时间错误,原文为“since the 1990s”,故选A。
B“Small but Powerful: the Importance of Nanogeochemistry”最能概括主旨,故选B。

C 34. A 35. B 36. C
根据第1部分中“By following a long curved orbit, a spacecraft can use the force to reach the destination. Although the trip is longer, the spacecraft uses less fuel and arrives sooner.”
根据第2部分中“A spacecraft can tell its position by knowing the distance it has travelled from where it started.”
根据第3部分中“We can use a signal travelling at light‑speed to check the speed. A spacecraft sends a signal to Earth. By timing how long the signal takes to travel from the spacecraft to Earth and then go back to the spacecraft, we can work out the speed.”

B 38. C 39. A 40. C
第三段前文“people around him began to doubt his dream. They told him his dream was impossible for a boy from a small town.”,划线部分“Alex remained undeterred, for he believed in the power of dreams.”,说明虽然别人不看好,但Alex没有被影响,没有放弃梦想,故选C。
Believe in the power of dreams,故选C。
41. When was the Chang’e-6 spacecraft successfully launched?

45. What other things can help us with space exploration? Give one example and explain.
_______________________________________________
41. On May 3, 2024.
42. Because the moon turns and travels around Earth at the same speed.
43. Rocks and soil./ It will get rocks and soil from the moon’s surface.
44. It will land in the SPA Basin.
45. A telescope./ A telescope can help us with space exploration. It can watch distant stars and planets, so scientists can get more information about outer space.
/A space-craft. A space-craft can help us with space exploration. It can fly into space and bring back samples from other planets for scientists to study.
