M: Last week, we posed a question to our listeners: Should shops stop selling bottled water? We’ve received a flood of responses from our listeners, and we’re excited to share some of their views today.
W: First, it’s Rebecca from Manchester. She wrote, “It’s shocking that only around 61% of plastic bottles are recycled in the UK. The rest are thrown away. It takes about 450 years for a plastic bottle to break down in the earth. Single-use plastic bottles are bad for the environment. Therefore, shops should stop selling bottled water.”
M: Jane from London held the opposite view. She mentioned she enjoyed the convenience of bottled water.
W: Allen from Leeds agreed with Jane. He also said without the convenience of plastic bottles, people would drink less water and turn to unhealthy drinks instead.
M: True, but another listener Jasper noted that we have top-quality tap water in the UK. Boiled tap water is more cost-effective than bottled water.
W: And George from Sheffield warned that some plastic bottles may contain harmful chemicals that might harm people’s health...

C. The more air heat.
【答案】18. A 19. A 20. B
【原文】M: A report from a European climate service shows that November was very warm. It was the second warmest November they have on record. This makes it likely that 2024 will be said to be the hottest year they've measured. Last year was the hottest before. But after this summer, scientists thought 2024 would be even hotter. After this October, the world's average temperature was 14.10 degrees. Up to December this year, it's 0.14 degrees higher than the same time last year. A climate expert said November was much hotter than past Novembers. He also added that it was bad for people and nature. Animals might die and food chains might change. Coastal places might have trouble because of rising seas. Some scientists said ocean heat and less sea ice made the temperature go up. The amount of Antarctic Sea ice in November was low. Oceans take in a lot of heat from gases and give it back. Last year was hot because of a Pacific warming. But this year, the usual cooling after it didn't happen. Scientists are confused about why it's still hot. One idea is that the warming makes more heat in the air.

【原文】Amaya Edwards, a 10-year-old superstar, suffered from a rare heart disease at 5. But that hasn’t stopped her passion for the ocean. At seven, on a trip to the sea, she found a struggling starfish on the beach. With her parents’ help, she gently carried it back to the water. Watching it come back to life in the waves was the magical moment that lit up her dream to be a marine biologist. Since then, she has cleaned her local beach nearly every day!
After finding a dead seal on the sand, Amaya created a powerful poster to raise people’s awareness of littering. It was so effective, the governor of Georgia turned it into a postcard-and Amaya raised £500 for marine rescue charities through its sales.
But she didn’t stop there. Amaya has written and illustrated five books to help children learn how to protect ocean wildlife and reuse materials creatively. Her books are now available to buy in the UK, USA, and Australia, with the profits supporting charities like the Sea Life Trust.
From rescuing wildlife to leading global campaigns, the incredible girl is showing that anyone-at any age-can protect the Earth.

【原文】Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. Today I’d like to talk to you about our conservation plans for this village. As you all know, we are lucky enough to live in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is our duty to preserve it for future generations. The first item on the agenda is the application by a developer, which suggests building 40 new homes on the former factory site by the river. Mr.Bartholomew will give his views on that and recommend how the village should respond when the application is discussed. Secondly, we’ll hear a report from Amanda. She will give us a progress report on the attempts to encourage new wildlife to go to the riverside area. Thirdly, Geoffrey will update us on the water quality in the river. Of course, we pride ourselves on having some of the cleanest water in the country, but this just doesn’t happen on its own. It takes a lot of monitoring and testing to maintain a high standard. Finally, Christina will organize a discussion for 30 minutes or so to get your ideas on the future direction the village should be taking. I’m sure you’ll all agree that, while we want to preserve the past, we don't want to be stuck in the past. I hope we’ll be able to continue the meeting by 4:30 after a break.

【原文】W: In one small American city, snowball fights are not legal. Welcome to Severance, Colorado. The town, north of Denver, gets about 100 centimeters of snowfall a year. For almost 100 years, city rules have said it is not legal to throw or shoot stones or snowballs at people, animals, buildings, trees, or vehicles. Kyle Rietkerk works for the town of Severance. He said children cannot believe that it is not legal to have snowball fights in their hometown. He said town leaders have for years told the children, “You have the power; you can change the law.” But no one had tried until now. Nine-year-old Dane Best lives in Severance with his parents and little brother. He has made it his aim to get the snowball-fight ban removed. Dane says he believes the law is out of date. Dane wrote letters with his classmates in support of ending the ban. He says the first person he hopes to hit with a snowball is his four-year-old brother.
