Now, new research points to a possibly lifelong setback (障碍) for children who are suffering from extreme heat. In the first few years of life, children develop key physical, cognitive (认知的) and social skills that can shape (塑造) the rest of their lives. Meeting these basic developmental milestones (里程碑) at the early time—including recognizing letters (字母) or words and playing independently—can influence later life achievements, from mental health to economic success. “Delays in developing these skills set kids down a developmental path that can affect not just personal well-being, but society as a whole,” says Cuarta, a researcher at New York University. To see if there are connections between extreme heat and the development of these skills, Cuarta and his team studied data from 19,600 children surveyed by UNICEF in six countries. The team used the Early Childhood Development Index, which follows milestones in four areas: reading and number-related skills (cognitive skills), social-emotional development (social skills), ways of learning (learning skills) and physical development (physical skills). The Index tested children’s ability to name letters, read simple words and recognize the numbers 1 through 10, among other skills. In Cuarta’s study, researchers found that compared to children living in areas with cooler conditions, children who experienced higher temperatures above 30℃ were less likely to meet basic developmental milestones, particularly for reading and number-related skills. Learning loss may happen because heat’s effects on the brain can produce slower reaction times and an inability to focus. Heat can mess with (扰乱) children’s sleep, leading to cognitive disorder and learning difficulties in early childhood. With temperature rising globally, these delays could continue through school years and beyond, widening gaps in education and opportunity. “There is an urgent need to find out the exact ways in which heat is affecting development,” suggests Cuarta. “Gaining a better understanding of who is being affected and how it affects them will allow us to develop adaptation strategies (适应策略) to help them in the future.” 33. How does the author present the pressure caused by climate change? A. By quoting an expert. B. By raising a suggestion. C. By giving examples. D. By making comparisons. 34. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The influence of painful childhood. B. The importance of early development. C. The science behind the heat’s damage. D. The explanation of cognitive skills. 35. What can be inferred from Cuarta’s study? A. Heat stress can promote kids’ sleep quality. B. Heat’s effects were greater on mental health. C. Temperature can determine kids’ personality. D. Extreme heat may harm reading and number-related skills. 36. What is Cuarta’s suggestion about? A. The addition of control groups. B. The inclusion of more volunteers. C. Possible direction of future studies. D. Wide promotion of the findings. 【答案】33. C 34. B 35. D 36. C 【解析】 【导语】本文介绍了气候变化带来的极端高温会对儿童的早期发展造成终身的不良影响,呼吁进一步探明高温影响儿童发展的具体机制,以此制定适配的应对策略。 【33题详解】 第一段“Climate change, including extreme heat and frequent heat waves,… threatening ecosystems, reducing food production, and harming public health.”,作者列举了气候变化带来的压力具体表现为威胁生态系统、降低粮食产量、损害公共健康三个实例,以此呈现气候变化的影响,符合举例子的说明方式。 【34题详解】 第二段“children develop key physical, cognitive and social skills that can shape the rest of their lives....”,主要阐述儿童早年形成的身体、认知、社交等关键技能会塑造其一生,按时达成早期发展里程碑会影响后续人生的诸多成就,核心是说明早期发展的重要性。 【35题详解】 第三段“children who experienced higher temperatures above 30℃ were less likely to meet basic developmental milestones, particularly for reading and number-related skills.”,介绍经历30℃以上高温的儿童比生活在凉爽环境中的儿童更难达成基础发展里程碑,在阅读和数字相关技能方面表现尤为突出,可推断出极端高温可能损害儿童的阅读和数字相关技能。 【36题详解】 最后一段“…Gaining a better understanding of who is being affected and how it affects them will allow us to develop adaptation strategies to help them in the future.”,Cuarta提出亟需探明高温影响儿童发展的具体路径,明确受影响群体和影响机制后开发适配的应对策略,这属于未来研究的可行方向。 D Hilary Smith belonged to a good family. But by the age of twenty, he had spent all the money the good old family had. He then had some trouble with the bank and was put in prison. He escaped from the prison and ran to Australia at once. Hilary did not like Australia, and Australia did not like Hilary. What he could do seemed to be one of two things: die or work. Then he remembered that he was not alone in the world. He had an aunt. She was his father’s only sister, but his father used to say she brought no glory (荣耀) to the family. Hilary, of course, tried to discover what she had done. It seemed that she had failed to marry a nobleman. Instead, she had chosen a husband who was connected with “trade”. Of course, as soon as she became “Mrs. Parks”, her brother considered her dead. Later on, Mr. Parks died and left her a lot of money. But that did not bring her back to life in her brother’s opinion. Hilary discovered his aunt’s address. Luckily she remained faithful and loyal to him even after she fell ill. So Hilary’s star shone again, and soon he moved into her house and lived as comfortably as a sailor who had just reached harbor. He had only about a six-pence in his pocket. One thing was soon clear: his aunt was seriously ill, and nothing could cure her illness. Hilary was very worried. Fate had found a home for him, and was now going to throw him out of it. There was only one thing that could save him: her will (遗嘱). “Will? ”she said, “yes, I have made one. That was when I was a girl and had not much money. I left all my money to some religious people. ” “Didn’t you make another will when you were married? ”Hilary asked. His aunt shook her head. “No, ” she said in a low voice. “There was no need. When I finally had a lot of money I found I had no relations. ” On the next day he went to the public library and examined a book of law. It told him what he already believed. When a woman is married, an earlier will loses its value. A new will must be made. If no new will is made, the money goes to the nearest relation. Hilary knew that he was his aunt’s only relation. His future was bright. After a few months had passed, Hilary’s problems became serious. He badly needed money. He had expensive tastes, and owed a lot of money to shopkeepers. They believed in him because his aunt was rich, but the debt was terrible. Unluckily his aunt did not want to discuss money matters at all. In the end they had a quarrel about the small amount of ten pounds. Hilary was not very angry. He began to wonder about a new problem. Was it kind to want his aunt to live any longer? Was it not better for her to die now? While he was considering what to do, his aunt told him that she was going to send for her lawyer. So she was going to make a new will, Hilary thought. She might leave all her money to someone else. Soon he reached a clear decision. He must do a great kindness to the poor old woman. One night when the old servant who had been nursing his aunt went off, he doubled the amount of some medicine. The total amount was too great and it could just put her to sleep forever. “Thank you, ”his aunt took the glass from his hand with a grateful look. “I want, more than anything, to sleep, and never to wake up again. Is that what you wish, Hilary? Don’t blame (责怪) me if I have some doubts about what you intended to do. Sick people get these ideas, you know. One thing I ought to explain to you. Mr. Parks never married me. He already had a wife and couldn’t marry again. That made your foolish father very angry with me…Well, if I am alive tomorrow I shall make another will in your favor (赞成). If I die tonight, you’ll get nothing…. No, Hilary, don’t try to take the glass away. If you do that, I shall know, and I don’t want to know. Goodnight, Hilary. ” Then, very carefully, she raised the glass to her mouth and drank. 37. From the story, we learn that Hilary’s aunt was ________. You might be thinking that these shows offer a totally real portrayal (描绘) of these animals—an objective window into their lives as they hunt, rest and raise their young. ____56____ While the images we see are filmed on location, many of the sounds are recorded in a sound studio and added to the programs later by human “Foley artists (拟音师)”. ____57____Usually, documentary filmmakers can film their subjects from a great distance, but they usually can’t get close enough to capture clear sounds without disturbing the animals. ____58____ There will probably be background noises such as crew members chatting or walking around if sounds are recorded on location. In other cases, the animals might make sounds of a frequency (频率) or volume (音量) that most microphones simply can’t capture clearly. “Foley artists” will use a variety of tools to simulate (模拟) the sounds made by animals. And most of them will create the close—up sounds of animals chewing or yawning with their own mouths. These sounds are created as the artist watches the videos, making sure they perfectly match the actions they’re paired with. ____59____ Animal cries—which are far too complex to be simulated (模仿)—will have to be taken from library recordings. Watching “Foley artists” at work on wildlife projects gives me a thrill like the one we get when we see how a magic trick is done. ____60____ Sounds have the ability to affect how we understand a given species. Why do we go to school? Some believe that we go to gain knowledge, while others think that socializing (社交) is a necessary part of school life. We go to school mainly to get qualification (学历) and learn facts, as the role of school is to develop us into adults and prepare us for working life, so its purpose becomes clear: gaining knowledge. Certificates (证书) of education level are required for further study and jobs. Learning subjects well helps us pass entrance exams, which provides choices for our paths to the future. It is also necessary for us to learn facts and develop an understanding of the world. For example, the knowledge of Physics and Chemistry can explain certain things in daily lives, which can help solve some problems. In Geography and History classes, we can learn about the way our environments are shaped over time. These allow teenagers to connect with the world and understand time and space that are beyond their reach. However, some people believe socializing like working in groups and making friends is more important. They can help improve interpersonal skills and cultural understanding, and are good for our mental health. These are the keys to our growth and prepare us for the future. At school, group work needs us to communicate and socialize with others. In this way, we can increase our ability to express ideas clearly, which makes it easy for others to understand us. Such skills cannot be developed from textbooks and are of great use in workplaces. It is also important for us to make friends at school. Research has shown that close friendships can help reduce stress, especially during teenage years. Making friends at school does not mean that we can’t learn facts well. Instead, the friendships can encourage us to study, so school should actively support students to develop healthy friendships. I think school is the place where students should gain knowledge and develop socializing skills as well. Topic * Why do we go to school? People don’t have the same view on this topic. Nowadays, AI-powered forecasting models are being developed to make weather predictions faster and more accurate (精准的). AI can collect and process more kinds of information than before. In the past, forecasts mainly depended on temperature, wind, and air pressure. Now, AI models can provide information, including city maps, population data, and even electricity usage records. For example, the Hong Kong Observatory uses computer vision, an AI method, to study radar pictures of rain. This helps scientists know the speed and direction of rain clouds. However, some weather events are still hard to forecast. Traditional models work well for large systems, such as areas of high or low pressure. But small, local events, like sudden rainstorms or tornadoes, are harder to predict. Reducing the grid (网格) size of a weather model helps. But the large amount of processing makes it impossible to use traditional methods. Rain predictions near the equator are often less accurate than in other places. One reason is that the difference in tropical rainfall systems affects the predictions. Another reason is that observation systems are not equally good worldwide. At present, there are many ways to improve forecasts. With AI, weather forecasting is becoming faster, cheaper, and more accurate. For example, Nvidia’s CorrDiff model uses AI to produce more detailed forecasts quickly with less energy. Even the Hong Kong Observatory can make rain forecasts only a few hours ahead. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 AI helps weather forecasting greatly. It can deal with more kinds of data and get more detailed information than old models. Wang Wei: Yeah, but…I can’t stop thinking about the Chinese things here. Like that jade cabbage from the Palace Museum. It’s beautiful, but it feels wrong to see it so far from home. Li Ming: I know what you mean. When I saw the Buddhist wall paintings which were taken away from Dunhuang during wars, I felt proud of our culture, but also…angry. Wang Wei: Exactly! Those bronze pieces from the Qing Dynasty are important relics. They belong in Chinese museums, not behind foreign glass. It’s like part of our history is locked away. Li Ming: (sighs) What can we do about it? We’re just students. Wang Wei: We’re not “just” students! My uncles work as conservators in a museum. They say more countries are giving back artifacts now. Maybe we can study history or international laws to help! Li Ming: Or use modern contrivances! Like 3D scanning to share our culture without moving the real things. I want to learn coding for that. Wang Wei: Great idea! For now, let’s take more photographs. After we get back from London, we can give a presentation (展示) to show our class how amazing our art is…even here! 29. World Art Collection: From India to China D. Chinese Art Protections: With 3D and Coding C Climate change, including extreme heat and frequent heat waves, is already known to put pressure on us in many ways—threatening ecosystems, reducing food production, and harming public health. D Hilary Smith belonged to a good family. A. careless about money B. rude to her nephew C. not easy to get along with D. kind-hearted and wise 38. Why did Hilary’s father consider his aunt dead? A. Because he thought she was a shame to the family. B. Because she broke away from the family for a better life. C. Because they lost touch with each other after her marriage. D. Because she married a businessman with a wife against his will. 39. The underlined sentence suggests that Hilary Smith ________. A. decided to call in a lawyer for his aunt B. made a decision to put his aunt's life to an end C. made up his mind to take good care of his aunt D. would help his aunt to donate money to religious people 40. Which detail from the story is the climax (高潮) of the story? A. Hilary succeeded in escaping from the prison. B. Hilary quarreled with his aunt about ten pounds. C. Hilary’s aunt drank the medicine her nephew prepared for her. D. Hilary’s aunt made a will to leave all her money to someone else. 第II卷 非选择题(共60分) 五、填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分20分) (A) 根据括号中所给的汉语写出单词,使短文意思完整正确,并将答案填写在答卷纸的相应位置上。 Chinese mortise and tenon (榫卯) is a wonderful traditional skill. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 八、书面表达(满分15分) 82. 假定你是李华,你校英语俱乐部正在举办主题为“China In My Eyes”的作品征集活动。请你结合以下提示,用英语写一份倡议书,号召同学们积极参加。词数100左右。 ★ Purpose and significance (意义): ● better understand Chinese culture ● improve English ● … ★ Requirements (要求) for works: ● positive and creative ● a poster, a short video or … ● hand in your work before June 30th 注意事项:(1)必须包含所有提示信息,可适当发挥,开头已给出,不计入总词数; (2)意思清楚,表达通顺,行文连贯,书写规范; (3)请勿在文中使用真实的姓名、校名和地名。 Dear schoolmates, The school English club is going to hold an activity—China In My Eyes. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
