Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each. Requirements for completion: ·One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term ·18 weekly one-hour pair meetings ·Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings ·At least three pair-teacher meetings ·One five-minute final video Sign up! The sign-up and registration process is as follows: ·Students sign up and indicate the languages they can share and the languages they are interested in learning. ·Based on the information entered by each student, potential pairs are identified. ·Proficiency(熟练)levels are confirmed through coursework or placement tests. ·Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special permission number to register for the programme. Reminders: Signing up for the programme does not automatically mean that you will be able to register and participate. Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels. Since there are many factors involved in the pairing process, not all students who sign up will be matched with a partner and be able to register for the programme. 21.In the programme, students will ________. Indicate their languages of interest. B. Select their own coursework. C. Make individual contact. D. Choose their partners. B Kathy Ho teaches high school inside Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford(LPCH). "Sometimes I don't like saying that I'm a teacher," says Ho. "People get in their minds an idea of what teachers do, but that's not really what it is here." Here is room 386, where each year, about 500 LPCH patients also become students. The hospital school is free of parents, doctors, and medical procedures. It's a place of learning.About half of Ho's students stay for a week or less; others are there for more than a year. Most of Ho's students will recover, which means that preparing them to return to school is an increasingly important component of care. Still, in room 386, academics don't come first.Physical health and mental health are the priority. "If you're scared about something and thinking only about that, there's no way you're going to be able to learn," Ho says. "I'm a coach, an adviser, and a comforter, and that's what it means to be a hospital teacher." There are up to 30 students at any given time in Ho's class. She generally works with their regular teachers to get lessons and tests being used at their home schools. Some teachers don't give the kids any assignments; they express sympathy instead. "I feel like it is a disservice to the kids," Ho says. "They think their teachers don't care about their schoolwork." Ho recognizes the psychological benefit of helping kids keep up with their peers(同龄人)outside the hospital. "I actually think medicine is only a small piece of some problems,“ says Julie Good, director of pain management services at LPCH. "It's about problem-solving around what it means to have a full life. Those kids have dreams.School can keep those dreams alive by giving kids a way to learn and grow." 24.Who does Ho teach at LPCH? ______ A. Sick children. B. Young nurses. C. Medical students. D. Patients' parents. 25.What is a characteristic of Ho's job? ______ A. Prioritizing academics. B. Encouraging innovation. C. Treating various diseases. D. Playing multiple roles. 26.What does the underlined word "it" refer to in paragraph 4? ______ A. Offering regular lessons. B. Paying extra attention. C. Assigning no schoolwork. D. Showing no sympathy. 27.How does the hospital school benefit the students according to Good? ______ A. It eases peer pressure. B. It helps them live in hope. C. It frees them from aches. D. It entertains them with stories. C The connection between people and plants has long been the subject of scientific research. Recent studies have found positive effects. A study conducted in Youngstown, Ohio, for example, discovered that greener areas of the city experienced less crime. In another, employees were shown to be 15% more productive when their workplaces were decorated with houseplants. The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken it a step further—changing the actual composition of plants in order to get them to perform diverse, even unusual functions. These include plants that have sensors printed onto their leaves to show when they're short of water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in groundwater. "We're thinking about how we can engineer plants to replace functions of the things that we use every day," explained Michael Strano, a professor of chemical engineering at MIT. One of his latest projects has been to make plants glow (发光) in experiments using some common vegetables. Strano's team found that they could create a faint light for three-and-a-half hours. The light, about one-thousandth of the amount needed to read by, is just a start. The technology, Strano said, could one day be used to light rooms or even to turn trees into self-powered street lamps. In the future, the team hopes to develop a version of the technology that can be sprayed onto plant leaves in a one-off treatment that would last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are also trying to develop an on-and-off "switch" where the glow would fade when exposed to daylight. Lighting accounts for about 7% of the total electricity consumed in the US. Since lighting is often far removed from the power source (电源)—such as the distance from a power plant to street lamps on a remote highway—a lot of energy is lost during transmission (传输)。 Glowing plants could reduce this distance and therefore help save energy. 28.What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. A new study of different plants. B. A big fall in crime rates. C. Employees from various workplaces. D. Benefits from green plants. 29.What is the function of the sensors printed on plant leaves by MIT engineers? A. To detect plants' lack of water. B. To change the composition of plants. C. To make the life of plants longer. D. To test chemicals in plants. 30.What can we expect of the glowing plants in the future? A. They will speed up energy production. B. They may transmit electricity to the home. C. They might help reduce energy consumption. D. They could take the place of power plants. 31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Can we grow more glowing plants? B. How do we live with glowing plants? C. Could glowing plants replace lamps? D. How are glowing plants made pollution-free? D The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there's a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list. New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia (失智症) in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women. Lead researcher Dr. Helena Horder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said: "These findings are exciting because it's possible that improving people's cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia." For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak (最大值的) cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts. A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level, or 120 watts or higher. A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness category; and 59 women were in the low fitness category, defined as a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their exercise tests stopped because of high blood pressure, chest pain or other cardiovascular problems. These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades. During that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness. "However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia, it only shows an association. More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important." She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were from Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other groups. 32.What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph? A. Positive effects of doing exercises. B. Exercises suitable for the middle-aged. C. Experimental studies on diseases. D. Advantages of sporty women over men. 33.Why did the researchers ask the woman to do bicycle exercise? A. To predict their maximum heart rate. B. To assess their cardiovascular capacity. C. To change their habits of working out. D. To detect their potential health problems. 34.What do we know about Dr. Horder's study? A. It aimed to find a cure for dementia. B. Data collection was a lengthy process. C. Some participants withdrew from it. D. The results were far from satisfactory. 35.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise C. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia D. Biking Improves Women's Cardiovascular Fitness 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Ways to Teach Kids Work Ethic Early Ever watched your child try to get out of doing housework by making excuses? If only the effort they put into avoiding responsibility could be redirected into, well, actual responsibility. In fact, building work ethic(道德)in kids doesn't require military-style drills. Here are four simple and practical ways. ●Make housework part of the family routine.     Involve your child in the daily running of the house: tidying toys, feeding the dog, watering the plants.   36    When the tasks become as routine as brushing teeth, kids internalise that helping with housework is simply part of life. ●   37      You can't expect your child to tackle their tasks with enthusiasm while you're complaining about loading the dishwasher. If your child sees you enjoying your work and taking pride in a job well done, they're far more likely to do the same.  ●Build determination through goals.         38   Sometimes you have to help them find their"thing."Set small, achievable goals together with them and celebrate progress, not perfection. The trick is to let them struggle a bit-resist the urge to help fix things the moment they experience a setback. ●Treat mistakes as opportunities.     Few things strike fear into a child's heart like the prospect of failing. The best way is to normalise mistakes as a natural part of learning. When kids mess up, don't jump in with a rescue mission.   39        Teaching kids work ethic is to gently and consistently push them toward responsibility, determination, and pride in their efforts.   40    No worry. Those habits you're building now are setting your child up for a lifetime of resilience(韧性)and satisfaction. A.The key is consistency. B.Help kids develop analytical skills. C.Model the work ethic you want to see. D.Instead, encourage them to do differently next time. E.Sometimes, a cleaner living room is the best reward. F.Progress can be slow, and you'll wonder if it's all sinking in. Making Chinese 56 (dish) is seen as especially troublesome. Many Westerners     57     come to China to cook much less than in their own countries once they realize how cheap   58    it can be to eat out. I still remember  59 (visit) a friend who'd lived here for five years and I  60 (shock) when I learned she hadn't cooked once in all that time. While regularly eating out seems to  61     (become) common for many young people in recent years, it's not without a cost. The obvious one iss money; eating out once or twice a week may be  62   (afford) but doing this most days adds up. There could be an even 63   (high) cost to your health. Researchers have found that there is a direct link between the increase in food eaten outside the home and the rise in  64  (weigh) problems. If you are not going to suffer this problem, then I suggest that the next time you go to your mum's home  65    dinner, get a few cooking tips from her. Cooking food can be fun. Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback. “If I can win today,” she said to herself, “I can dance on the national stage next month.” Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After medical treatment , she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills. “Hi, Mary,” rushed her friend Jessica. “How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?” “I guess it can be tolerated if I am to win the match.” said Mary with a determined look. “Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She could be your real well-matched competitor.Come on!” After Jessica left, Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin. “If I don’t try harder, I won’t grasp this chance.” she thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried. “Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?” she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up. A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said “Hi, I’m Linda. I am the next one!” Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. “This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.” Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream, “Oh, God, I can’t find my music tape!” Linda searched her bag but in vain . “It may be missing on the way.” With these words, she then rushed out. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster.____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 录音稿 (Text 1) M: Do I need a card to enter the building? W: Yes, you’ll get your card this afternoon. Now, let me show you around and say hello to everyone, and then we’ll talk about your job duties. (Text 2) W: Would you like some more roast beef? It’s the chef’s signature dish. M: No, thanks. It’s really good, but I can’t manage any more. (Text 3) W: Hey, look at this one in the newspaper — Fishermen Fishing in Lake Victoria in Tanzania. M: Wow, that’s awesome. I like the unique atmosphere caught by the photographer. (Text 4) W: It’s almost midnight, Max. You’ve got a long drive tomorrow. M: OK, another 15 minutes for my travel blog, and I’ll be done. (Text 5) W: Hello, Mr. Waterman. This is Sarah Jones. I’m stuck on the highway. There’s a serious accident. I’m afraid I can’t arrive before noon. Could we meet this afternoon? M: Okay. I’ll see my doctor at 1 and will be available after 2. (Text 6) M: Lisa, you’re English, but you live here. What do you love about Copenhagen? W: It has everything big cities offer: cafes, theaters, museums. But it is still relaxing and manageable. Unlike London, you don’t feel constant pressure here. M: Was this lifestyle why you first came? W: No. I originally came for a three-month project at a law firm. After finishing it, they offered me a permanent job. I took it and stayed. (Text 7) W: Garden Hotel, may I help you? M: Hello, this is Mike Lee from Gilbert Company. We’d like to book a dinner for next Tuesday. W: Certainly, Mr. Lee. Could you let me know how many guests you’re expecting, and if you have a specific budget in mind? M: Yes, we’re expecting 20 people, and we’re aiming for 30 pounds per person. W: Understood. Is this for a special occasion? M: Yes, it’s to honor a staff member who is retiring next month. W: That sounds lovely. What time would you like the dinner to start? M: At 6:30 p.m. W: Okay. Would you like a detailed menu with prices? M: Yes. Could you email it to mikelee@gilbert.com? W: No problem. I’m on it. (Text 8) W: Dear listeners, the song we’ve just heard was made with an AI version of Jenny’s singing voice. M: Yeah, earlier this year, Jenny announced that she’d let anybody make a song using her AI voice, as long as they were entitled and shared their profits with her. And in just a few weeks, more than 300 new songs were created using her AI voice. W: Incredible! Just imagine, Jenny may have been at home, drinking a glass of wine, while her AI clone voice worked hard to sing her songs. This could be an attractive new business model for a pop star. M: Indeed. But some of our listeners call to say they want to hear Jenny’s real voice. Now, let’s play one of her greatest hits — Show Me Your Love. (Text 9) M: Dr. Evans, you just said that these ancient texts are actually recipes from ancient Babylonia. Can you tell us more? W: Ancient Babylonia is home to many of the things that we use in our cooking today. I bet about 50% of the energy you need every day comes from vegetables or animals that originated in this area. M: Why have these texts taken so long to come to light? W: These ancient texts have been known since the 1920s, but were thought to be medical texts. In the 1940s, Mary Hussey, an American scholar, suggested that they might be about food, but people didn’t believe her until French author Jean Bottéro, in the 1980s, was asked to write an article about cooking in the past. He had heard about the texts, so he went to Yale University and found out that they were indeed about food. (Text 10) M: Before we begin today’s experiment, let’s review the lab rules. First, safety glasses must be worn at all times, even if you’re only watching. Second, never mix chemicals unless the instructions tell you to do so. Today, we’re using a strong acid, which can cause serious burns if it touches your skin. If any chemical container is knocked over, don’t panic. Tell me immediately, and I’ll handle the clean-up. Also, keep your hair tied back and avoid wearing loose clothes. We will work in pairs. One person will handle the tools, while the other records the data. Switch roles after every three trials to ensure everyone gets practice. Remember, the goal is accurate data, not speed. If you finish early, do not start a new experiment. Instead, clean your workspace thoroughly. Any questions? No? All right, let’s have a safe and productive class. 答案和详解 听力答案 1. C 2. B 3. A 4. A 5. C 6. A 7. B 8. C 9. A 10. C 11. B 12. C 13. A 14. At that time, she was in a dilemma, "This is my chance to defeat her." But on second thought, she changed her mind, "If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something." She placed it on the chair carefully, leaving a note saying "Take it easy, we are the best." Soon, it was her turn to come on the stage. Hearing her name called, Mary walked onto the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself, "I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it." But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin.
