One of the most beautiful signs of summer here in the mountains of my home isn’t the flowers, or the trees or the early morning sunrises. It is instead the return of the work camps. These are week-long trips that voluntary groups make into our area to help people to make home repairs that they couldn’t afford to do themselves.
They are mostly kind-hearted teenagers giving up part of their summer vacation. They are always supervised (指导), though, by experienced builders who know what they are doing. It always brings a smile to my face and a joy to my heart to see them out there in the hot summer sun working to help those who need it most, with their only pay being the love in their hearts.
I remember watching one group building a new set of steps for a front porch (门廊) one year. It was 5 teenagers being supervised by one adult. What got me the most was listening to him encouraging them. I lost count of how many times he said, “Good job” or “Doing good” to them.
There was one girl, however, who obviously had never held a hammer (锤子) before. She bent 3 nails in a row working on one board. Finally the man knelt down beside her and instead of criticizing her, gave her a ten-minute tutorial on how to hammer a nail. When he was done, she tried again with a weak smile on her face and drove the nail in like an expert carpenter. The man looked down at her work and said, “Doing good!” once again.
Yes! They truly are doing good in this world. For every act of kindness there are a million kind acts. And I see those acts of kindness, those acts of goodness, and those acts of love every time I see one of these work camps helping those in need. May we all learn from their example.
4. Why do work camps come to the mountains annually?
A. To seek for volunteers. B. To enjoy summer scenery.
C. To do some maintenance work. D. To train teenagers to construct.
5. What is the role of the experienced builders?
A. Inspiring the teenagers. B. Guiding teenagers’ work.
C. Monitoring the teenagers. D. Giving praises to the teenagers.
6. What can we know about the girl?
A. She was impatient. B. She was a slow learner.
C. She always made mistakes. D. She was a green hand.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Doing Good and Being Kind B. Enjoying the Summer Scenery
C. Witnessing Summer Camps D. Discovering Teenager Builders
C 5. B 6. D 7. A

C
To find food in the darkness, deep-diving toothed whales rely on their built-in sonar (声呐), which bounces soundwaves off potential prey to reveal their location. But to these whales, plastic junk floating in the ocean may also “sound” just like a delicious squid (枪乌贼).
A new study suggests plastic debris (碎片) like shopping bags bear remarkably similar “echoes” to those of squid-likely due to some combination of their shape, size, degree of weathering, and chemical composition, the authors write. As it spreads in marine environments, it is also showing up in the guts (内脏) of marine mammals across hundreds of reported cases, damaging their stomach tissues and causing infection, choking, and malnutrition to the point of starvation. Matthew Savoca, a marine biologist at Stanford University says, “They’re in pain, they’re starving, but they think they’re eating.”
For the study, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, Merrill and his colleagues gathered nine plastic items: bags, balloons, and other common trash found in whales from North Carolina beaches. The research team hit the items with sound waves at frequencies that toothed whales use to hunt. They repeated the process on five dead squid bodies provided by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as five squid beaks taken from a dead sperm whale’s stomach. All plastic items tested, the team found, returned echoes as strong as or stronger than those from the squid.
It’s unknown whether deep-diving toothed whales use any means other than echo strength to distinguish food from not-food — but experts doubt it. Mouthfeel certainly doesn’t factor in. “They don’t really chew and taste like us. It’s more like suction (吸食),” says Laura Redaelli, a Ph.D student in marine biology.
All three experts agree on the need to reduce plastic production in the first place. The ideal approach, Savoca and Merrill say, involves policy changes and redirecting waste streams from the ocean, especially targeting unnecessary single-use items. “Maybe we can hope that, at some point, whales will learn the difference between plastic and prey,” Redaelli says. But until then, “the more plastic we keep putting in, the more animals are going to die”.
8. How do deep-diving toothed whales find food?
A. By producing soundwaves to attract prey.
B. By telling food from not-food through mouthfeel.
C. By using built-in sonar to locate prey in the dark.
D. By identifying echoes weaker than those from squids.
9. What is the impact of plastic debris on toothed whales?
A. It may result in their starvation. B. It may damage their built-in sonar.
C. It may reduce their adaptive ability. D. It may lead to various infectious diseases.
10. What should be done for marine mammals according to the experts?
A. Establish the policy against whale hunting.
B. Prevent waste from flowing into the ocean.
C. Ban the production of single-use items.
D. Encourage the use of eco-friendly plastics.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To describe how toothed whales use sonar.
B. To compare plastic echoes with squid echoes.
C. To report the number of whales killed by plastic.
D. To explain why whales eat plastic and call for action.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D
根据第一段中“To find food in the darkness, deep-diving toothed whales rely on their built-in sonar , which bounces soundwaves off potential prey to reveal their location.(为了在黑暗中寻找食物,深潜的齿鲸依靠其内置的声呐,声呐发出的声波碰到潜在猎物后会反射回来,以此探明猎物的位置)”可知,深潜的齿鲸是通过使用内置声呐在黑暗中定位猎物的。
根据第二段中“As it spreads in marine environments, it is also showing up in the guts (内脏)of marine mammals across hundreds of reported cases, damaging their stomach tissues and causing infection, choking, and malnutrition to the point of starvation. (随着它在海洋环境中的传播,在数百份已报告的案例中,塑料都出现在海洋哺乳动物的内脏中,破坏它们的胃组织,导致感染、窒息和营养不良,严重时可致饿死)”可知,塑料碎片可能会导致齿鲸饿死。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The ideal approach, Savoca and Merrill say, involves policy changes and redirecting waste streams from the ocean.(Savoca和Merrill说,理想的方法包括政策改变和改变废物流向,使其远离海洋)”可知,专家认为应该防止废物排入海洋。
D
Human beings have a fundamental need to belong. Yet we are living in a time of loneliness and isolation A lack of social connection can have negative consequences for both our mental and physical health. To encourage the feelings of connectedness, recent studies suggest that experiential purchases, such as travel, meals at restaurants and recreation, tend to bring people more happiness than material ones, and can promote a greater sense of social connection.
In a series of 13 experiments involving 1,980 participants, researchers asked people to think about either experiential or material purchases they had made and then rate their thoughts and feelings about those purchases. People reported feeling more connected with those who had made the same experiential purchase than those who had made the same material purchase. This reflects the fact that experiential purchases are more central to an individual’s identity.
Moreover, these findings apply even when people think about how their experiences differ. Even in cases where participants were asked to consider a situation in which they met someone making a similar but better experiential or material purchase, experiences were more likely to foster (促进) connection between people than material items were. Although the unpleasant social comparison can create a sense of social distance, this distance feels less wide when it comes to experiential purchases. That’s because it’s easier for people to find common ground and feel kinship with someone else over their similar experiences.
Finally, after people think about a joyous experience, they express a greater desire to engage in social activities than they do after they reflect on an important possession. As experiences bond us with others, they provide memories of such bond that people can revisit. These memories, in turn, can encourage engagement in even more sociality.
One clear takeaway from this research is that people would likely be wise to shift their spending habit from “having” to “doing”. Also, the research hints that directing resources toward more community engagement might drive improvements in societal well-being.
12. Which can be an example of experiential purchases?
A. Claiming free food samples. B. Purchasing a trendy T-shirt.
C. Watching a paid magic show. D. Reading fictions in a library.
13. What does the underlined word “kinship” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. A tendency to be competitive. B. A shared family background.
C. A desire to purchase the same things. D. A sense of emotional closeness.
14. What can be learned about experiential purchases?
A. They are better for memory improvements. B. They encourage engagement in social events.
C. They contribute to widening social distance. D. They create unpleasant social comparisons.
15. What does the research suggest doing according to the last paragraph?
A. Encouraging community engagement. B. Reflecting on our consumption preference.
C. Making use of more resources in community. D. Setting rules to limit unnecessary spending.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据文章第一段“To encourage the feelings of connectedness, recent studies suggest that experiential purchases, such as travel, meals at restaurants and recreation, tend to bring people more happiness than material ones, and can promote a greater sense of social connection.(为了增强归属感,近期研究表明,体验式消费(如旅行、餐厅用餐和休闲活动)往往比物质消费更能带来幸福感,并有助于促进更强的社会联结)”可推知,体验式购买是参与活动或经历。
根据文章第三段“Although the unpleasant social comparison can create a sense of social distance, this distance feels less wide when it comes to experiential purchases. That’s because it’s easier for people to find common ground and feel kinship with someone else over their similar experiences.(尽管令人不快的社会比较可能会让人产生社交疏离感,但在消费体验方面,这种距离感却显得不那么遥远。这是因为人们更容易在相似的经历上找到共同点,从而与他人建立情感上的kinship)”可知,体验式购买时,这种社会距离感就没那么大,即较为亲近,所以kinship表示情感上的亲近感。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段内容“Finally, after people think about a joyous experience, they express a greater desire to engage in social activities than they do after they reflect on an important possession. As experiences bond us with others, they provide memories of such bond that people can revisit. These memories, in turn, can encourage engagement in even more sociality.(最后,当人们想到愉快的经历时,他们表达出参与社交活动的渴望,远比思考重要财产时更强烈。这些经历使我们与他人产生联系,并留下可被反复回忆的联结记忆。而这些记忆又会进一步激发人们参与更多社交活动的愿望)”可推知,体验式购买会鼓励参与社交活动。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段内容“One clear takeaway from this research is that people would likely be wise to shift their spending habit from “having” to “doing”. Also, the research hints that directing resources toward more community engagement might drive improvements in societal well-being.(这项研究的一个明确结论是,人们可能应该将消费习惯从“拥有”转向“行动”。此外,研究还表明,将资源投入到更多社区参与中,可能会促进社会福祉的改善)”可推知,该研究建议鼓励社区参与。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Feeling overwhelmed (不知所措)? You’re not alone. Between meetings and daily chores, stress builds up fast — and it doesn’t just have a bad impact on your mood. It can ruin your sleep, increase your heart rate, and weaken your immune system ____16____ Here are something you can do right now — and the science behind why they work.
Take five deep breaths.
____17____ Studies show that deep breathing can lower blood pressure, slow your heart rate, and boost heart rate variability — a key marker of resilience. It also reduces cortisol (皮质醇), the stress hormone associated with a range of issues, including poor sleep and brain fog. Controlled breathing has even been linked to better emotional regulation and memory — one more reason to pause and exhale.
Hug it out — or hold a hand.
Touch matters — even a small one. A quick hug or a gentle touch can cause the release of the hormone that helps regulate stress and create feelings of connection. ____18____ Research shows that self-touch — such as placing a hand over your heart, rubbing your arms, or gently touching your face — can also lower cortisol levels.
____19____
Just a few minutes in natural light supports vitamin D production, and improves heart rate variability. Time spent in green spaces brings even more benefits, such as lowering cortisol levels and boosting mood. One review found that the most dramatic improvements in both mood and heart rate variability happen within the first two minutes outdoors.
Take a quick 5-minute walk.
It turns out that walking isn’t just for physical health. ____20____ This simple movement enhances blood flow and oxygen to the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for focus, planning, and decision-making. At the same time, it activates the default mode network — a brain system that lights up during low-effort, repetitive activity and is strongly linked to daydreaming and creative insight.
A. It’s a proven tool for clearer thinking.
B. Step outside for sunlight and fresh air.
C. Try different exercises to make you active.
D. But you don’t need another person to get the benefits.
E. Even a 30-second posture check-in can help reset your focus.
F. But the good news is that even small, low-effort actions can help your body reset.
G. Few things affect your nervous system as immediately — or as powerfully — as your breath.
F 17. G 18. D 19. B 20. A

As humans, our longing for recognition can sometimes lead us lost, forcing us to make regrettable decisions. This is a lesson I learned all too well.
My name is Alex and at 15 years old, I excelled academically yet longed for popularity among my peers (同龄人). Despite my achievements. I felt overshadowed and unnoticed. The desire to stand out consumed me, pushing me towards a terrible mistake.
One day, during a visit to the IT lab with my friends, our teacher mentioned missing computer parts. Curious glances exchanged, everyone wondered aloud how it could happen in a locked lab. "It's possible to open that lock with another key," I said, seeking attention and admiration from my peers.
Eyes turned to me with interest. It was a rush I'd never felt before—a taste of the attention I wanted so much. To keep it, I even showed how the lock could be opened. Little did I realise, that single moment of pride would lead to an unexpected trouble.
The following day, I was called to the principal's office. My heart pounded as I entered. Mr Clark, the principal, looked at me not with anger, but with a calm and kind expression. "Alex," he began gently, "some computer parts are missing from the lab. A few students mentioned you showed them how the lock could be opened. Can you tell me what happened yesterday?"
His voice was soft, not accusing. Still, nervousness tightened my throat. I knew I hadn't taken anything, but I was scared of being misunderstood and ashamed of my own foolish boast (吹嘘). I tried to speak, but no words came out. My eyes grew wet with tears. Seeing this, Mr Clark said quietly, "It's okay. You don't have to answer now. If you remember anything later, you can come tell me." He gave me a kind nod and let me return to class.
That evening, I told my dad everything—how I had shown off about the lock, how I was called to the office, and how I was too upset to explain myself clearly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Dad listened quietly and then told me, "We all make mistakes, but brave people fix them."

That experience changed how I saw myself.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Dad listened quietly and then told me, "We all make mistakes, but brave people fix them." The next morning, he came to school with me. With his support, I calmly explained everything to Mr Clark. I admitted I had shown off about the lock, but I also firmly stated that I never took anything. After hearing my explanation, Mr Clark nodded thoughtfully and suggested we go check the lab together. We went with the lab teacher to look again—and there were the missing parts, left behind by another student who had forgotten to return them.
That experience changed how I saw myself. I stopped trying to show off to get my classmates' attention. Instead, I spent my free time helping others with maths and joined the school's computer club. When peers asked about the incident, I told the whole story honestly—including my regret. No one looked down on me; in fact, several of them started spending more time with me. I finally learned that real trust doesn't come from showing off, but from being sincere, reliable, and true to yourself.

D
