Lv Shuxiang is one of the greatest Chinese language masters and educators in modern China. He was born in Danyang, Jiangsu Province, in 1904. When he was at school, his teachers were very strict with students. They asked him to treat every word and every sentence carefully, never allowing careless mistakes. In this learning state, he developed good learning habits from an early age.
Lv Shuxiang never depended on natural talent alone. He loved reading all kinds of books and formed the habit of taking detailed notes while reading. Julie was born in China 17 years ago. In 2024, she went to the USA with her family. As a high school student, she has found many differences between Chinese and Americans:
About money
Americans like to spend more than they have, so many of them are always in debt (欠债). But Chinese usually spend less than they have, so many of them always have money left in the bank.
The American children themselves make their money by themselves. Most Chinese kids get money from their parents.
About education
Many American students have less homework to do while many Chinese students have much.
Many American girls take part in sports, dancing and singing groups while many Chinese girls take part in study groups.
Many American parents think there is no need to send their children to an expensive school. It’s different in China. Many Chinese parents would do anything to send their children to expensive schools in order to make their children’s studies better, though sometimes they don’t have enough money.
About friends
Most American parents let their sons or daughters make friends by themselves. They never ask them about their friends’ looks or qualities while Chinese parents usually enjoy knowing more about their children’s friends in many ways, and usually don’t allow them to stay out too late with friends.

“Everyone is so quiet and serious,” I thought.
I looked around the classroom and tried to come up with why today was so unusual.
“ 1 (child)! This will be the last French lesson you will have with me.” Mr. Hamel said, “Your new teacher 2 (arrive) tomorrow. From now on, you must learn to speak German.”
I was completely shocked. I thought about the crowd of people I saw in the town square this morning. I then had another terrible 3 (feel). “I won’t learn French any more. But I hardly know anything about it, I don’t even know how to write 4 French. I didn’t pay attention in class.” I felt very disappointed (失望的) with 5 (I). “I wasted too much time playing with my friends. I should have spent the time 6 (study).” I felt so sad about having to give it all up. I felt even 7 (sad) about Mr. Hamel’s leaving.
I looked at Mr. Hamel. He looked so sad. “I feel sorry for him. He has worn his best clothes today 8 it is his very last lesson.”
Then I looked at the village people who were sitting at the back of the classroom. They have come to pay their respects (敬意) to the village teacher. Forty years of teaching! That is 9 very long time. And now it has to all end for Mr. Hamel.
How I wish he could give us a 10 (two) lesson!
