There will be experts on the spot to direct operations, and equipment will be provided. The Group serves a snack lunch, but evening meals are not included. The site lies on the western edge of the village of Brookside. You’d better walk there, as parking will not be available along the road to the west. A large yellow notice will indicate the site entrance. And the yellow arrow signs will lead you to the site. The site will be quite muddy, so boots are probably a better idea than trainers if you’re doing the digging. But you’ll need something to change into afterwards. Although you won’t feel very cold, the site is quite exposed, so it’s a good idea to wrap up well when you’re watching. Please remember to bring your own gardening gloves if you are digging. A brochure will include further information about the day’s program.
A
A good advertisement persuades you to buy the product or service, but a highly successful advertising campaign becomes a new catchphrase (流行语). The four successful advertising campaigns below show how important a clever slogan is for a company’s brand.
Nike: “Just Do It”
Nike adopted this slogan in 1988 while the company was in the midst of financial difficulties. This simple saying is now closely connected with the brand’s sports clothes. “Just Do It” is a perfect saying because it inspires a feeling of boldness and encourages consumers to try harder. Nowadays, the slogan has been referenced in music, television shows, movies, and everyday language.
Apple: “Think Different”
Although Apple’s advertising slogan was criticized for being grammatically incorrect, it still managed to make its way into the minds of consumers. Launched in 1997, the slogan asked consumers to act rebelliously (反叛地) and defy expectations in order to achieve greatness. Since this was the inspiring story of the founding of the company by Steve Jobs, it impressed many consumers.
American Express: “Don’t Leave Home Without It”
American Express first advised consumers that they shouldn’t leave home without it in 1975. The slogan was originally used to promote American Express Traveler’s Checks and the commercials featured the Academy Award-winning actor Karl Malden. Although Malden was the brand’s ambassador for over two decades, other celebrities such as Stephen King and Jerry Seinfeld have been featured in advertisements for American Express.
De Beers: “A Diamond Is Forever”
De Beers launched this simple slogan in 1947 and it’s still in use today. The slogan “A Diamond Is Forever” was created by Frances Gerety from the Philadelphia advertising agency NW Ayer. De Beers’s slogan changed most of Americans’ relationship with diamonds. Before the slogan, it was not usual to propose with a diamond engagement ring. Ian Fleming’s novel featuring the character James Bond was published in 1956 with the title “Diamonds Are Forever”, further promoting the slogan’s popularity.
21. Which of the following slogans was put forward to overcome crisis?
A. Just Do It B. Think Different
C. Don’t Leave Home Without It D. A Diamond Is Forever
22. What made Apple’s slogan impressive?
A. Its incorrect grammar. B. Its advanced ideas.
C. Its inspiring story. D. Its target customers.
23. What is special about De Beers’s slogan?
A. It was created by a novelist.
B. It misled people once launched.
C. It is the only one that has been used till today.
D. It changed Americans’ proposing custom.
A 22. C 23. D

B
The first time I saw an elderly gentleman head to toe in shining buttons sewn into his black suit, I was fascinated by what he was wearing. I later learned he was a member of the Pearly (珍珠) Kings and Queens Association.
At the heart of the century-old tradition stands Henry Croft. Raised in an orphanage (孤儿院), Henry became a road sweeper. He grew close to the market traders known for their community pride and outfits dotted with pearl buttons. Motivated by their fashion and their spirit of mutual aid, Henry created a suit decorated with pearl buttons to catch the eye while raising money for his childhood orphanage.
Henry’s suit became a symbol and so did he. Hospitals and charities across London called on him to aid them in fundraising. Henry turned to the market traders to meet demand. In 1875, the Pearly Kings and Queens were born, a network of 28 pearly families — one for each London borough (自治区) — who have passed the titles and responsibility for charity down through the generations. Once in the Pearlies, members make a lifelong commitment to raising money for charity.
The Pearlies now have a social media presence and a new generation of young Pearlies. I reached out to Harman, a younger member, who spoke about the tradition. “It’s a way of connecting with my history — my family has been part of the Pearlies for over 100 years. There’s something special about putting on buttons, knowing I’m continuing the work my family devoted themselves to,” she said. “It’s also an important part of London’s history and a living working-class tradition, born out of community and the responsibility of looking after those in need. At a time when many communities are struggling, that spirit feels more relevant than ever.”
I visited many more of the Pearlies, including Phyllis Broadbent, the most senior member at 98. On the importance of the Pearlies being multigenerational, Broadbent says, “Like any family, it only works with a mix of experience, knowledge, and energy. Every member of the association brings something vital that keeps it going.”
24. Why did Henry Croft initially create the pearl-button suit?
A. To attract attention for donations.
B. To spread the community pride.
C. To copy the traders’ fashion.
D. To build a charity network.
25. What is required of a Pearly member?
A. Acquiring sewing skills.
B. Being a native Londoner.
C. Contributing personal property.
D. Possessing a lasting passion for service.
26. What does Harman illustrate about the Pearly tradition?
A. It needs more financial support.
B. It calls for more public recognition.
C. It gains popularity through social media.
D. It carries historical significance and social value.
27. Which of the following best describes the Pearlies?
A. Brave and ambitious. B. United and dedicated.
C. Wealthy and fashionable. D. Outgoing and experienced.
A 25. D 26. D 27. B

C
No matter how old we get, there will always be some songs that transport us back in time. We only need to hear a few notes of a tune, and we remember where we were when we first heard it, what we were doing and who we were with.
For most people the songs that remain most meaningful are those from their teens and 20s. The continued impact of these songs is due to something called the “reminiscence bump” — a tendency for people to have more vivid memories from their youth and early adulthood. During this time our brains are still developing, and we have less control over our emotions, which makes our experiences more vivid and the music we hear more intense.
That’s why, for most people, the emotional connection to music peaks during adolescence and early adulthood. In fact, a new study from Finland suggests that this peak is actually around the age of 17. Previous studies have looked at the “reminiscence bump” in Western populations, but the Finnish research team wanted to look at how it affects people globally, and if it affects men and women differently.
They studied 1,891 people from 84 countries. The participants were first asked to share their age and to name a piece of music that was important or meaningful to them. The researchers then compared the participants’ ages with the release dates of the music they named. The average peak age for personally meaningful music was 17, although there was some difference between men and women. And, for men, the peak age was around 16, while for women it was 19.
One possible explanation for this is that men tend to form their music-related memories earlier, during the resistant stage of adolescence, perhaps choosing songs that celebrate independence. Women, on the other hand, may prefer music that relates to important social and emotional connections, which take longer to develop.
28. What can be learned about “reminiscence bump” from paragraph 2?
A. It transports us to childhood. B. It generates vivid memories.
C. It intensifies youthful experiences. D. It helps recollect adolescent events.
29. What does the Finnish research team focus on?
A. Challenging existing theories and collecting new data.
B. Identifying the peak age and comparing music preference.
C. Expanding the research scope and observing gender difference.
D. Confirming previous findings and analyzing emotional intensity.
30. What can we infer about the study from paragraph 4?
A. It adopted a quantitative research method.
B. It targeted participants of different age groups.
C. It focused on the evolution of music release time.
D. It yielded findings beyond researchers’ expectations.
31. Why do men and women have different peak ages?
A. They mature at varying ages. B. They favor distinct music themes.
C. They have diverse musical talents. D. They value separate social behaviors.
D 29. C 30. A 31. B
根据第二段中“reminiscence bump”后面的“a tendency for people to have more vivid memories from their youth and early adulthood(人们对自己青年和成年早期的记忆更为生动的一种倾向)”可知,“记忆隆起”的核心特征是使人更容易回想起青少年时期发生的相关事件。
根据第三段中的“Previous studies have looked at the “reminiscence bump” in Western populations, but the Finnish research team wanted to look at how it affects people globally, and if it affects men and women differently.(此前的研究针对西方人群研究了“记忆隆起”现象,但芬兰研究团队想要探究它对全球人群的影响,以及它对男性和女性的影响是否存在差异)”可知,该团队的研究重点是将研究范围从西方拓展至全球,同时观察该现象的性别差异。
根据第四段中的“They studied 1,891 people from 84 countries. The participants were first asked to share their age and to name a piece of music that was important or meaningful to them. The researchers then compared the participants’ ages with the release dates of the music they named.(他们研究了来自84个国家的1891名受试者。研究人员首先要求受试者告知自己的年龄,并说出一段对自己而言重要或有特殊意义的音乐。随后,研究人员将受试者的年龄与他们所提及音乐的发行日期进行了对比。)”可知,该研究选取大量受试者,采集数据并进行比对,采用的是定量研究的方式。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“One possible explanation for this is that men tend to form their music-related memories earlier, during the resistant stage of adolescence, perhaps choosing songs that celebrate independence. Women, on the other hand, may prefer music that relates to important social and emotional connections, which take longer to develop.(对此一种可能的解释是,男性往往更早形成与音乐相关的记忆,这一阶段处于青春期的叛逆期,他们或许会选择歌颂独立的歌曲。而女性则可能更喜欢与重要的社交和情感联结相关的音乐,这类情感联结需要更长时间才会建立。)”可知,男女偏好的音乐主题存在明显差异,这是二者峰值年龄不同的原因。
D
Nearly half of all Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches or phone apps to track their sleep. Are these devices accurate and do the users get a better night’s rest?
Not enough sleep can cause health problems. A new study, published in Nature, finds a U-shaped relationship between how long people sleep and markers of biological ageing. Those who got between 6.4 and 7.8 hours of shut-eye a night seemed to experience slower ageing than those who slept either more or less.
Sleep trackers promise to help people hit this sweet spot. Apps typically record movement and sound, sometimes inferring breathing rates from the audio. Smartwatches record movement and measure blood flow by shining low-intensity light onto the skin and detecting how much reflects back.
Most trackers are very good at distinguishing sleep from being awake. Several studies have compared them to polysomnography (多功能睡眠记录仪), which uses electrodes (电极) to record eye movements, brain activity and heart rate, and is the gold standard for measuring sleep. One paper, published in Sensors, found three tested popular trackers agreed with polysomnography around 95% of the time in telling sleep from wakefulness across the night.
When it comes to identifying the different sleep stages, trackers are less accurate. A good night requires cycling between rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep, in which dreams take place, and several stages of non-REM sleep ranging from light to deep. Wearables agree with polysomnography on sleep-stage classification only around 50-80% of the time. “That merits a C+ to B+,” says Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist at Harvard.
Despite trackers’ shortcomings, Dr Robbins says they give people a better, more objective sense of how long they slept. Plus, they do seem to improve sleep habits. In a survey, 55% of adults who reported using sleep trackers said they had changed their behaviour and improved sleep quality after learning from the data.
Too much data can have downsides, though. Unlike trying to eat healthily or exercise, putting more thought into sleeping can backfire. As many as 30% of those who track their sleep report feeling anxious. But sleep data is not worth losing sleep over, because there is an alternative to sleep tracking: whether you wake up feeling rested is the best indicator of how good your night was.
32. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 2?
A. To show the practice of long life.
B. To reveal the motive of the study.
C. To indicate the harms of lacking sleep.
D. To prove the importance of sleep tracking.
33. What do the underlined words “this sweet spot” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. The U-shaped relationship.
B. The ideal duration of sleep.
C. The measurement of blood flow.
D. The record of breathing rates during sleep.
34. What aspect can trackers measure most accurately?
A. The conscious state. B. The sleep depth.
C. The sleep quality. D. The sleep effects.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Sleep Trackers: Easy to Handle?
B. Sleep Trackers: Affordable for All?
C. Sleep Trackers: A Good Choice or Not?
D. Sleep Trackers: A Solution to Sleep Anxiety?
D 33. B 34. A 35. C

根据文章第一、二段“Nearly half of all Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches or phone apps to track their sleep.
根据第二段中“A new study, published in Nature, finds a U-shaped relationship between how long people sleep and markers of biological ageing. Those who got between 6.4 and 7.8 hours of shut-eye a night seemed to experience slower ageing than those who slept either more or less. (发表在《自然》杂志上的一项新研究发现,人的睡眠时间与生物衰老指标之间存在U型关系。每晚睡眠时长在6.4至7.8小时之间的人,衰老速度似乎慢于睡得更多或者更少的人。)”及第三段中“Sleep trackers promise to help people hit this sweet spot. (睡眠追踪器有望帮助人们达到this sweet spot。)”可知,“this sweet spot”指第二段提到的、能延缓衰老的6.4到7.8小时的理想睡眠时长,也就是最优睡眠时长。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Most trackers are very good at distinguishing sleep from being awake. Several studies have compared them to polysomnography, which uses electrodes to record eye movements, brain activity and heart rate, and is the gold standard for measuring sleep. One paper, published in Sensors, found three tested popular trackers agreed with polysomnography around 95% of the time in telling sleep from wakefulness across the night.
根据文章第一、二段“Nearly half of all Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches or phone apps to track their sleep. You need to figure out in detail why the company interests you and how it could benefit from your expertise.
____38____ You maybe tend to either greatly limit when you can work, or tell the interviewer that you can work at any hour. Whatever you do, be straightforward with your future employer about your limits on your time. ____39____ Although you may not want to work every weekday evening, it may be possible that a few evenings a week will work out. If you are unable to work Sunday afternoons let your future employer know that, but let him or her know the other days you’d be willing to put in extra time.
What do you know about the company? ____40____ This is why it is always a good idea to do some research ahead of time on any company you’re applying to work for. You may not need to go in depth about the company, but it’s always a good idea to know some things about it other than just the services it provides.
By preparing for these questions, you will help yourself stay calm, and avoid those uncomfortable moments of trying to come up with reasonable answers.
A. What hours are you available?
B. Do you have reliable transportation?
C. Remember not to be too strict about the limits
D. The fact that you want to earn a paycheck is obvious.
E. More often than not, an interview will include this question.
F. It can also reduce the anxiety that often comes with interviews
G. Regardless of how you go to work, make sure that you have a back-up.
F 37. D 38. A 39. C 40. E
根据上文“When preparing for an interview, it’s always a good idea to anticipate the questions that might be asked. By preparing ahead of time, you will give yourself a better chance to answer well.(在准备面试时,提前预想可能被问到的问题总是一个好主意。通过提前准备,你将有更大的机会给出更好的回答)”可知,前文提到提前准备面试问题能提升答好的几率,F项的“还能减轻面试常有的焦虑”是对提前准备好处的延续补充,衔接自然。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Why do you want this job? The worst answer you can give to this question is, “Because I need the money”.(你为什么想要这份工作?对于这个问题,最糟糕的回答就是:“因为我需要钱。”)”可知,前文指出回答“想要这份工作”最糟的答案是“因为我需要钱”,D项“你想要赚薪水是显而易见的”承接该内容,引出雇主真正想了解的是你对公司的认可,逻辑通顺。
【38题详解】
根据后文“You maybe tend to either greatly limit when you can work, or tell the interviewer that you can work at any hour. Whatever you do, be straightforward with your future employer about your limits on your time.(你可能容易走向两个极端:要么大幅限制自己可上班的时间,要么告诉面试官自己随时都能上班。无论采取哪种方式,都应坦诚地向未来的雇主说明你的时间安排上的限制)”可知,空后内容围绕工作时间的限制、可工作的时段展开,A项“你什么时段有空?”对应本段的核心话题,作为段落主题句合适。
【39题详解】
根据后文“Although you may not want to work every weekday evening, it may be possible that a few evenings a week will work out. If you are unable to work Sunday afternoons let your future employer know that, but let him or her know the other days you’d be willing to put in extra time.(虽然你可能不想每个工作日的晚上都工作,但每周有几天晚上或许可以安排。如果你无法在周日下午工作,就告诉未来的雇主,但要让他或她知道你在其他时间愿意加班)”可知,空后说明不必完全拒绝加班、可协调部分时段,C项“记住不要对时间限制太过严苛”能引出后文的弹性时间沟通建议。
【40题详解】
根据上文“What do you know about the company?(你对这家公司了解多少?)”以及后文“This is why it is always a good idea to do some research ahead of time on any company you’re applying to work for. You may not need to go in depth about the company, but it’s always a good idea to know some things about it other than just the services it provides.(因此,提前对申请工作的任何公司进行一些调研总是一个好主意。你可能不需要深入了解公司本身,但除了了解其提供的服务外,掌握一些其他信息也总是一个好主意)”可知,前文抛出问题“你对公司有什么了解?”,后文说明要提前做公司调研,E项“面试通常都会包含这个问题”衔接前后,解释了提前做调研的原因。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Warm lamplight spilled across the dining table filled with inviting Thanksgiving food. Soft music filled the house, building a warm festive atmosphere. After three years of separation, Aunt Alice came for the long-awaited family reunion. However, a casual remark started a fierce quarrel between her and my mother. Their voices turned sharp, faces flushed with anger. In the chaos, a sweet drink overturned, dirtying the tidy tablecloth. My father tried to calm them down but failed. Holding my camera, I stood rooted, watching the joyful occasion turn into uncomfortable awkwardness.
I knew exactly what caused their misunderstanding: a hidden problem that had kept the sisters apart for three years. Aunt Alice valued family bonds greatly and treasured gatherings and birthday celebrations. After Mom started to run her small business, she seldom attended family events. Feeling neglected (忽视), Aunt Alice believed Mom cared more about her career than their relationship. What she failed to see was Mom’s hardship. Crushed by huge pressure and heavy debts when starting the business, proud Mom endured everything alone instead of troubling relatives. She skipped gatherings out of tiredness, not coldness. Her long silence turned small disappointments into deep anger.
Tired from the heated quarrel, the two fell into an uncomfortable silence. Anger left their faces, replaced by exhaustion and sadness. Neither dared to break the silence, casting a heavy shadow over the room.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Seeing the once-close sisters grow apart, I decided to clear up the misunderstanding.

Filled with great regret, Aunt Alice walked up to Mom.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seeing the once-close sisters grow apart, I decided to clear up the misunderstanding. I talked about how Mom worked extra hours day after day, suffered heavy losses in her business and spent many long nights lying awake. I also told her Mom had saved every birthday message she sent. Mom missed Alice so much, but she chose to keep her troubles to herself instead of letting others know. Hearing this, Alice was deeply moved and her eyes were filled with tears. She finally understood she had thought wrongly for such a long time.
Filled with great regret, Aunt Alice walked up to Mom. She said sorry to Mom for only thinking about her own feelings. Mom could no longer hold back her tears and gave Alice a warm hug. All the past unhappiness disappeared in their close embrace. I held up my camera and took a photo of this moving moment when they made peace. This Thanksgiving taught me that family disagreements often come from feelings left unshared. If we open our hearts to each other and try to understand one another, we can truly protect our valuable family love.

A
A good advertisement persuades you to buy the product or service, but a highly successful advertising campaign becomes a new catchphrase (流行语).

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Seeing the once-close sisters grow apart, I decided to clear up the misunderstanding.
