四、阅读理解
Passage A
Have you ever wondered why some people can keep lots of information in mind for years while others quickly forget what they have learnt? Psychologists have carried out plenty of research on human memory for decades and found several valuable rules that we can use in daily study.
First of all, memory works much like a muscle in our body. If you use your brain and practise recalling information regularly, your memory will grow stronger. However, if you seldom activate your memory and seldom review what you have learnt, your ability to remember will become weaker slowly. This explains why people who enjoy solving puzzles, reading widely and learning new skills usually have sharper memories.
Secondly, high-quality sleep plays an irreplaceable role in memory forming. While you are asleep, your brain continues to organise, process and store all the knowledge you gained during daytime. Unless you get enough sleep every night, your brain cannot finish this important work properly, and you will lose new information much faster. Scientific research points out that teenagers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep every day to allow their brains to work at full performance.
Thirdly, human emotions influence memory greatly. People tend to keep events connected with strong feelings in mind, no matter whether the feelings are joyful or sad. That is the reason why you can still remember your first day of junior high school clearly, but you may hardly recall what you ate for lunch three days ago.
Finally, daily diet cannot be ignored. Foods such as nuts, fresh berries and fish contain natural nutrients which support brain health. Keeping a balanced diet helps us maintain a stable and sharp memory as we grow older.
Choose the best answer.
1. What is the first important rule about memory mentioned in the text?
A. Enough sleep supports memory
B. Memory acts in the same way as a muscle
C. Healthy food improves brain ability
D. Emotions have influence on memory
2. How many hours of sleep do teenagers need every night for good brain performance?
A. 5-6 hours B. 6-8 hours C. 8-10 hours D. 10-12 hours
3. What kind of things do people usually remember more easily according to the passage?
A. Daily simple meals
B. Events connected with strong emotions
C. Everything they read in textbooks
D. Only happy and exciting experiences
4. What does the underlined word “nutrients” most probably mean in Chinese?
A. 营养物质 B. 西药 C. 颜料 D. 毒素
5. What is the most suitable title for the whole passage?
A. Advice on how to sleep better
B. The science behind human memory
C. Common reasons why people forget things
D. The most popular brain food for teenagers
Passage B
Large numbers of middle school students meet the same trouble in English learning. They spend hours copying and memorising word lists every evening, yet they can hardly keep most of these words in mind several days later. Is there any scientific way to make vocabulary learning more effective?
Memory educators give us a clear answer: stop blind cramming; learn vocabulary with proper strategies. Here are three powerful, science-based learning methods.
Method 1: Spaced Repetition. Instead of reviewing all new words in one single evening, spread your review time over several days. You can review newly learnt words on Day 1, then Day 3, and once more on Day 7. This method beats last-minute cramming because it helps turn short-term memory into long-term memory.
Method 2: The Link Method. Try to connect each new word with something familiar to you. For example, if you want to memorise the adjective “diligent”, you may link it to the image of a hard-working ant. Generally speaking, the more unusual and lively your imagined picture is, the easier the word will stay in your memory.
Method 3: Learn vocabulary in context. Never memorise separated words alone. Try to learn them inside sentences, articles and real stories. When you learn the word “brilliant” within the sentence “She came up with a brilliant creative idea”, the surrounding context offers clear meaning and makes the word less easy to forget.
Unless you stick to regular review while using these three skills, you cannot get satisfying results. But if you keep practising these ways continuously, you will be surprised at how quickly your vocabulary grows.
Choose the best answer.
1. What common difficulty is described in the first paragraph?
A. Students refuse to spend time studying English
B. Students quickly forget words after memorising them
C. English vocabulary is too simple for teenagers
D. Teachers give too much copying homework
2. What is the core idea of “Spaced Repetition”?
A. Finish reviewing all words at one time
B. Review vocabulary on different days with longer and longer intervals
C. Only carry out one review after learning
D. Review new words every single hour
3. What do we need to do when using the Link Method?
A. Write long word lists repeatedly
B. Connect new words with things we already know
C. Read textbooks from morning till night
D. Copy each word dozens of times
4. Why is learning words in context more effective?
A. It saves more study time automatically
B. The context helps you understand the word’s real meaning
C. It requires less thinking effort
D. You don’t need to remember spelling any more
5. What condition is necessary if these three vocabulary methods want to work well?
A. Higher natural intelligence
B. Enough pocket money to buy books
C. Constant regular review
D. Special learning software

四、阅读理解
Passage A
Have you ever wondered why some people can keep lots of information in mind for years while others quickly forget what they have learnt?

Tips for Remembering English Words
Using mind maps is one of the most practical ways to remember English vocabulary.
【WHAT】A mind map is a visual diagram. We write one central word in the middle and draw lines to connect related words, phrases and ideas. It helps us see the relationship between different words clearly.
【WHY】This method works well because human visual memory is powerful. Instead of reading boring word lists, pictures and connections make information easier to keep in long-term memory. It also makes vocabulary learning less tiring.
【HOW】To make a mind map, put the core word at the centre. Add related words and simple drawings. Unless you review these mind maps regularly, you may still forget words. Remember to look through them every few days.
