Have you ever looked at your shoes and wondered how they stay closed without laces? Or maybe you have a backpack that uses a strange, sticky material to seal shut. This clever invention is called Velcro (魔术贴), and its story begins with a walk in the woods.
In 1941, a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral went for a walk with his dog in the mountains. When they returned home, he noticed many burrs (植物上的芒刺) stuck to his clothes and his dog’s fur.
Curious, George decided to look at a burr under a microscope (显微镜). He saw something amazing. The burr was covered with tiny hooks (钩子). These hooks easily caught onto anything loop-shaped (圈圈形状的,环形的), like the threads (针织的线) in his clothes or the fur on his dog. “This is brilliant!” George thought. “What if I could create a material that works just like this?”
He imagined two strips (条状物,带子): one with thousands of tiny hooks, and another with soft loops. When pressed together, the hooks would catch the loops, holding the strips together firmly. To separate them, you just pull them apart.
It wasn’t easy to make this idea real. Many people laughed at him. But George didn’t give up. He worked for years to find the right materials. Finally, after many experiments, he succeeded. He named his Invention “Velcro”.
At first, Velcro was mainly used by astronauts and skiers because it was so strong and easy to use. But soon, everyone discovered how useful it was.
Nowadays, Velcro is everywhere! It’s on your shoes, jackets, lunch boxes, and even inside some cars and airplanes. It’s especially helpful for children learning to tie shoes, or for people who find small buttons difficult. The next time you open your backpack or fasten your shoes, remember the clever engineer and his dog. Their walk in the woods led to an invention that makes all our lives a little easier!
1.Who invented Velcro?
2.The tiny hooks on the burrs easily caught onto anything loop-shaped, didn’t they?
3.What would happen to the hooks and the loops when pressed together?
4.Who mainly used Velcro at first after Velcro was invented?
5.What do you think of George de Mestral? Why?

People call him “Chicken Cutlet Brother” because he is a man of principle (原则) and he loves his work very much.
Mr. Li has some interesting rules at his stall. At 4:30 every afternoon, he stops serving other customers who want to buy chicken from him. This is the time when students finish school, and he only sells his chicken to them. He says he keeps doing it because he makes a promise. He wants to make sure the students can get a warm snack after a long day of classes. Besides students can buy cheaper chicken because this is his way of taking care of them. His rules are probably the secret to his success.
According to him, having a small stall is enough. The most important thing is not being famous or making more money. Instead, it’s seeing the beautiful smiles on the students’ faces. We often hear people say, “Life is not perfect.” But when problems really come to you, what do you do? Are you able to get through hard times?
Liang Jiaxiang has a story to tell. The 13-year-old Beijing boy once took part in the election (竞选) for class monitor. But he failed. It made him feel frustrated (懊恼). “All the books and TV shows say that as long as you work hard toward your goal, you will make it,” said Liang. “But why didn’t I make it? Does it mean hard work is useless?” He spent some time thinking, but still felt upset for he didn’t get any answers. Then he decided to talk to his classmates to find out why he was not chosen. “Through the talks, I learned problems with myself that I never noticed before,” said Liang. “I cheered up again, since I saw what to improve. I will fight for the next vote.”
Like Liang, Cao Yuhan, a 12-year-old Beijing girl, used to have difficulties, too. It all started when she was told to learn how to swim. Cao hated swimming. She didn’t practice, so one time she fell into the pool and nearly drowned (溺死). Feeling frightened, the girl said she suddenly felt challenged to learn the sport. “I told myself that I should beat swimming so that I would never drown again. Now I’m an excellent swimmer. If I had given up then, I would never have learned how much I could enjoy the sport.”
A positive (正面的) attitude helps make bad things turn good, says Hou Ying, a psychological counselor (心理咨询师) at Beijing Bacui Bilingual School. “Students at my school come to me with different problems,” she says. “Some are angry. Some are worried. Some blame (责备) their problems on others. I always advise them to face their problems, accept them and fix them. It may sound like it is very hard to do, but once you choose to face them, it becomes easier.”

A few days before the new school year, my neighbor Ollie and I were playing in the park when we met some kids from my school.
“I wish summer wasn’t ending,” said Rose. “But at least I’ll be in Ms. Ramirez’s class. My brother had her last year. She’s so nice.”
“I got Mr. Nishimoto,” said Jack. “I’ve heard he brings his guitar and plays funny songs.”
“I’d love to have a singing teacher,” I said. “I have Ms. Newman, and I know nothing about her.”
“Oh no,” said Alex. “I bet she’s the one people call the mean, green homework machine.”
“I don’t listen to rumors (传闻),” I said with a smile. But part of me thought, what if it is true? And that’s when the worry button got pushed in my brain. And once the worry button gets pushed, one worry can turn into lots and lots of worries surprisingly quickly.
That night, I had a wild dream. I spent all morning searching for my school uniform and ended up going to school really late.
“You’re late,” yelled a scary green monster. “Now you’ll have to do ten times as much homework—every night, forever.”
I woke up with my heart racing.
That afternoon, Ollie’s grandma, Agatha, asked if I was looking forward to school starting.
“Um, not exactly, ” I said. And I started describing my nightmare. The more I described it, the funnier it sounded. Soon, we were all laughing hard.
“I guess what Alex said about your new teacher really got to you.” said Ollie.
“You know,” said Agatha, “I think there might be some information about the teachers on your school’s website. How about doing a little detective work?”
On the site, we found a picture of Ms. Newman, who was actually a smiling human, not a scary monster. Beneath her photo was a description of her hobbies and her pet turtle. The moment I learned some facts about my mystery teacher, my worry button finally switched off.
It turned out that Ms. Newman is really a fantastic teacher. She even brings her turtle to class sometimes!
1.Were the kids talking about their summer vacation or their new teachers in the park?
2.Why did the author have a bad dream with a scary green monster in it?
3.What does the underlined part “a little detective work” refer to?
4.When did the author stop worrying?
5.What can you learn from the story? Please answer the question from two different aspects.

Second, companies like BYD, NIO, and XPeng are making great electric cars that people love. These cars are good for the environment and also fun to use.
Another big reason is the charging stations. Now, it’s easier to find places to charge your electric car. You can see many charging stations in cities and parking lots.
China is now one of the world’s leaders in making and using electric cars. It’s a big step towards a cleaner future. Maybe one day in the future, _____________!

When I was in Grade 6, I often compared myself to others. One day, my best friend, Lily, got the shiny star sticker. I really wanted one because she came out first in a maths competition. That made me feel quite low. “She’s better than me!” The thought rang in my ears.
Then, Mr Abbott, our wise teacher, shared a magic secret. He advised, “Instead of feeling disappointed, focus on your own performance and goals. You’ll shine just as brightly.” I decided to give it a try.
I started keeping a diary and wrote down one good thing that happened each day. This helped me appreciate what I had. I also made a “dream board”. I put where I wanted to be at the end of the year on it. It encouraged me to reach my goals through careful preparation and hard work. Slowly but surely, the methods worked! The day finally arrived when I got the star sticker myself!
Here’s the really cool part: I have learned to be happy for Lily too. Cheering for my friend makes me feel super happy!

Most Americans think of cats as pets. Cats and dogs are both popular pets. But cat owners think that cats are nicer pets than dogs in some ways. Cats are cleaner, and they do not make the house dirty. They are also quieter than dogs. They usually do not make a lot of noise. What’s more, cats are easier to take care of. You do not have to spend much time with a cat. In fact, many cats prefer to be alone.
But not all cats are pets. Some cats can help people, but sometimes cats can be a problem. They can kill mice, but they can also kill pet birds. They like to watch birds in the yards, and sometimes even eat birds. That’s why some people don’t want cats around. Cats can also be a problem in cities. In Rome, for example, thousands of cats live in the streets and old buildings. They make rubbish bins dirty. They damage things and sometimes even hurt small children.

When she returned to her village, her family was waiting for her with a big smile. They were so proud of her. Mulan changed back into her girl’s clothes and was happy to be home.

Now I’m starting to feel like I want to find a job that isn’t so busy, even if it means I don’t make as much money. What do you think? Should I stay and get used to the busy days, or should I look for another job that’s less busy and makes me happier even if it pays less?
