During the rainy season, Wen’s classroom floor was often covered with water from wet umbrellas. The umbrella stand near the door was narrow, so large umbrellas fell out and blocked the way. For invention week, Wen set two goals: keep the floor dry and let students handle umbrellas quickly.
His first model used a tall cardboard box with holes cut in the top. It kept umbrellas upright, but water softened the bottom within a day. For the second model, Wen placed the box inside a plastic tray. The floor stayed dry, yet students had difficulty finding their own umbrellas because the handles were too close together.
Wen then watched how students entered the room. Most wanted to leave quickly, and few would read a number or use a lock. He changed the design into a low round stand with wide spaces around the edge. Each space had a simple colored shape, so users could remember a red star or a blue circle instead of a number. Water ran through small holes into a removable tray.
A three-day test revealed another surprise: the round stand took too much space when all the spaces were filled. Wen cut it into two half-circles and placed them against the wall. He also added rubber feet so the stand would not slide on the wet floor. This version worked well.
At the exhibition, Wen showed all four models instead of only the final one. Visitors could see how each failure led to a change in the next idea. His display reminded visitors that a successful invention is often a record of questions, tests and useful mistakes.
26.Which was one of Wen’s goals at the beginning?
A.To make umbrellas dry immediately. B.To use electronic locks.
C.To keep the classroom floor dry. D.To win first prize.
27.Why did Wen add a plastic tray?
A.To show colored shapes. B.To make the stand taller.
C.To hold more umbrellas. D.To collect water.
28.What can we infer from Wen’s observation of students?
A.A design must fit users’ actual habits. B.Every invention needs a computer.
C.Colored shapes are harder than numbers. D.A tall stand is always safer.
29.What does “This version” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The tall cardboard box. B.The two half-circle stands with rubber feet.
C.The round stand before testing. D.The original narrow stand.
30.Which statement best summarizes Wen’s design process?
A.He copied a costly product and made it cheaper.
B.He followed visitors’ advice after the exhibition.
C.He improved the stand by testing one problem at a time.
D.He chose appearance over practical use.
C
Garbage (垃圾) is the most serious kind of environmental pollution. Each person produces about two kilos of garbage a day. We are making garbage faster than nature can break it down. And we are using up resources faster than they can be replaced (代替).
This adds up to trouble for the environment. Where does all the garbage go? What can we do to deal with garbage? How can we make less garbage?
Garbage isn’t just the bad fruit, vegetables or meat that we throw away. Those are only a small part of all the things we throw away. Factories and homes produce the most waste. And we create other kinds of waste in different kinds of daily activities. Have you ever wondered what happens to your garbage? Most is burned or put into landfills (垃圾填埋场). Less than 25% of our waste is recycled.
With a population (人口) of more than 1.4 billion, garbage is a big problem for China. Chinese cities create more than 160 million tons of garbage every year. The number is growing by about 10% each year. Once, we used about 3 billion plastic shopping bags every day in China. This was a great waste of resources and caused serious pollution.
In the past few years, we have done something to change this. Now we use more cloth bags and shopping baskets when we go shopping. Also, China has built more waste-to-energy plants (垃圾焚烧发电厂) in cities to clean up garbage. But there is a lot more work to do. And you can help, too.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
31.How much garbage does each person produce every day?
A.About 2 kilos. B.About 12 kilos. C.About 20 kilos. D.About 25 kilos.
32.Besides homes, what else produces the most waste according to the text?
A.Schools. B.Offices. C.Farms. D.Factories.
33.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The most serious kind of environmental pollution.
B.Using more cloth bags and shopping baskets.
C.The great waste of resources and serious pollution.
D.The great population of China.
34.What is the main idea of the text?
A.How to make cloth bags for shopping.
B.The garbage problem and ways to deal with it.
C.When people should build more power plants.
D.How to save resources in daily life.
35.Why did the writer write the text?

【答案】26.C 27.D 28.A 29.B 30.C
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述Wen不断改良雨伞收纳架,一次次发现问题、优化设计,最终研制出实用雨伞架的故事。
【详解】26.根据第一段中“Wen set two goals: keep the floor dry and let students handle umbrellas quickly.”可知,Wen最初的目标之一是保持地板干燥。
27.根据第二段中“For the second model, Wen placed the box inside a plastic tray. The floor stayed dry...”以及第三段中“Water ran through small holes into a removable tray.”可知,添加塑料托盘是为了接住伞上的水,防止地板变湿。
28.根据第三段中“Wen then watched how students entered the room. Most wanted to leave quickly... He changed the design...”可知,Wen观察到学生想快点离开且不愿用锁,从而改进了设计,这说明设计必须符合用户的实际习惯。
29.根据第四段中“Wen cut it into two half-circles and placed them against the wall. He also added rubber feet... This version worked well.”

例文:
Dear students,
School is our second home. It’s our duty to create a civilized school.
First of all, we should obey school rules and go to school on time. Second, we ought to protect the environment. We should use both sides of paper, shut off lights when leaving, and save water. We shouldn’t pick flowers or step on grass. Don’t spit everywhere and keep the environment clean. Last but not least, it’s important for us to be polite to others. We should respect our teachers and help our classmates in need.
I hope our school will be more civilized and beautiful.
That’s all. Thank you.

A.Schools. B.Offices. C.Farms. D.Factories.

34.What is the main idea of the text?
A.How to make cloth bags for shopping.
