Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this.
If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow?” “Is there any wine?” “Did you buy any bread?”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me…?” or “Can I have…?” In the US, this is still considered to be wrong and “May I have…?” is preferred (更喜欢).
It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give…?” You can also use “May/Can I borrow…?” “Could/Can you lend me…?” “May I have…?” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.

I came across an article telling some sick children need help two years ago. I called the article and I was asked to help a little girl named Sue. She had mental illness. A short time later I went for a visit to Sue. Before I knew her, she had stayed in hospital for years. At the beginning, I talked with her as much as possible, but she was too quiet and shy, sitting in the corner of the sofa and listening. She was careful not to allow our eyes to meet. Over time, Sue felt more comfortable little by little while I was present. We could share a cup of hot coffee, go window shopping or take slow walks in the country. Though she knew she could always depend on me, Sue never discussed how she felt about our friendship, even after we spent our first year together.
One day, I got a call from our volunteer group, “Kitty, would you and Sue like to be interviewed on a local TV news show?” I was very excited and answered, “Wow! Let me discuss it with Sue.” I didn’t think Sue could agree with me. But to my surprise, Sue wanted to be interviewed, too.

Blind boxes have become very popular among teenagers in recent years. These closed boxes hold small, cute toys, and buyers can’t see what’s inside until they open them. It is the “surprise” that makes blind boxes so interesting.)
Many well- known companies (公司) make blind boxes. Pop Mart is one of the most famous ones, with popular characters like Molly and Dimoo. Disney also makes blind boxes with famous figures (形象), such as Mickey Mouse and Elsa. As a local blind- box company,52 TOYS is famous for its animal- themed toys like cute cats and pandas. You can buy them in toy stores, shopping malls or online shops.
Why do teens love blind boxes? First, opening a box is exciting—you never know which toy you will get. Each set has 10—12 common toys and there is often a hard-to-get “hidden” one. Collecting these toys is a fun hobby. Many teens share their unboxing videos on social apps and make friends with collectors all over the world. Sometimes, they even trade toys to get the ones they want.
However, blind boxes also bring problems. Some teens buy too many boxes just to get their favourite toy, which wastes money. Experts suggest teens should control themselves and buy what they can afford (负担得起).Parents can also help kids learn to spend money wisely.

My name is Jeff. I like learning foreign languages. When I retired (退休) in 2018, I could speak three foreign languages. At that time, my biggest wish was to learn a new one.
Later, I watched a program about Chinese culture on TV. I was so interested in it that I made the decision to learn Chinese. I found a cultural center in the north of London by chance (偶然). It offered Chinese language courses fit for me. In March 2019, I began to learn Chinese. To attend the classes, I left my home at 5 a.m. every Saturday and drove 3 hours to the cultural center. But this didn’t stop me. After class, I practiced a lot. Through learning, I developed a love for Chinese poems (诗) and I joined in activities like Chinese poetry readings. I increasingly dreamed of visiting China.
My Chinese teacher Mr. Liu always said, “It’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” He suggested that I should take part in a study tour in China. So in August 2024, I visited Xi’an with my classmates of the cultural center. During the trip, as the student best at Chinese among us, I tried to act as an interpreter (口译员). I helped my classmates in many ways like asking the way and shopping in Chinese. This experience encouraged me to study further.

If you look in a mirror, you can see tiny holes in the corners of your eyes. Each hole leads to a small tube that runs to your nose. Tears run slowly into this tube drip by drip. Day and night, the holes drain (流走) the tears away. If they didn’t, you would always look as if you were crying.

Bees are smarter than we think! When a bee finds food, it does a special wiggle dance (摇摆舞) to tell others where to go. The way it moves shows where the food is, and how long it waggles tells how far away the food is. However, the bee dance doesn’t always work. Scientists have been puzzled (困惑的) by this for years. Now they have found something new.
In a new US study, scientists used a hive (蜂箱) with clear walls to record the bees dancing. They trained some bees to get food at a certain place. These bees returned and danced to show others where to go. If a new bee found the food after watching a dance, the scientists checked the video to see which part of the dance led the bee to the food.
They found that bees often succeeded when the dance was longer, showing that the food was farther away than it actually was. This way, bees would fly past the food, then see it on their way back, giving them two chances to find it. Also, if all bees danced the same way, they might miss the food more often. Small mistakes in the dance made bees search more, increasing their chances of finding the food.
61.Scientists used a special hive with clear walls to watch how bees dance.
62.The research found that bees were more successful when the dance showed the food was closer than it really was.

AI is quickly becoming part of everyday life. According to a 2024 survey, adults in the US interact (互动) with AI several times a day. We wonder: Should people be polite to AI during these interactions? Here’s what four students have to say about it.
Aubrey: Yes. AI systems learn from interacting with people. This means a person’s behavior influences AI’s responses. I’ve read that using polite language in our prompts (提示) can lead to well-sourced (来源可靠的) information with fewer mistakes.
Hanming: No. AI doesn’t have feelings. Sometimes, too many polite words can confuse AI. For example, if someone asks AI to correct a paragraph with many mistakes but says, “Could you please make some small changes?” AI might make only tiny changes. In this example, being too polite, you may take the risk of creating big problems. And AI won’t do what you really want it to do.
Ethan: Yes. I think we should be polite to AI, just like we are to other people. Our world needs more kindness, and when we practice it—whether toward people or technology—kindness can spread. Being kind, even to AI, helps build good habits.
Asha: No. You don’t have to be impolite to AI, but it’s better to focus on being clear and direct. I’m sure we can all agree that being polite to living creatures is important. But being smart about the use of AI holds more value than wondering if we should be polite to a machine. Let’s lead our lives with honesty and kindness, but let’s also focus on using technology efficiently.
66.According to a 2024 survey, adults in the UK interact with AI several times a day.
67.Both Aubrey and Ethan think that being polite to AI helps users get more detailed information.

Today it has become popular for women to wear the traditional qipao dress. Especially during the National College Entrance Examination, also known as the “gaokao”, many mothers wear qipaos to wish their children good luck in the exam. This is because “qipao” is regarded as a symbol of the Chinese saying “qi kai de sheng”, meaning success.
Some people believe that the qipao can date back to gowns (长袍) worn by women in the Qing Dynasty. Influenced by Western culture, it slowly changed during the early 20th century, becoming much fitter and body-hugging (修身的). After years of development, the qipao is now mainly divided into Beijing styles, Shanghai styles and Hong Kong styles. There are many differences in color and design among them.
The Beijing-style qipao is more traditional than Shanghai-style and Hong Kong-style qipaos. The colors of Beijing-style qipaos are much brighter. High-quality Beijing-style qipaos are usually made by hand, so the price is much higher.
Compared with Beijing-style qipaos, Shanghai-style ones are more modern. More Western styles are used in the designs (设计) and colors. Shanghai-style qipaos became the most popular qipao style around the 1930s because of the modern design and shape. Now, most women still choose Shanghai-style qipaos first.
Hong Kong-style qipaos have been greatly influenced by European styles. They have shorter sleeves (袖子) than the other two styles. The designs are also simpler.

(云南省曲靖市第一中学卓立学校2025-2026学年九年级上学期期中英语试题)There are many countries using chopsticks as tools for picking up food. No country can use chopsticks so meaningfully as China. But chopsticks are not just simple tools. They come with their own special rules and traditions.
People should not make noise with chopsticks. Playing with chopsticks is seen as bad manners, just as making noise with forks and knives in a western country would be rude.
There are also some superstitions (迷信) related to chopsticks. For example, some people believe that chopsticks should not be left standing upright in a bowl. It looks like the incense (香) that Chinese use to honor the dead. Doing it at the dinner table is believed to bring bad luck.
You should not tap chopsticks on the edge of the bowl, as beggars do this to ask for food. Parents may get mad if children do this as they don’t want their children to be as poor as beggars in the future.
Chopsticks can also be a great gift. In Chinese, “chopsticks” reads “kuaizi”, which means to have babies soon. Newlyweds (新婚夫妇) sometimes receive chopsticks as a wedding gift. Skilled craftsmen (工匠) paint beautiful images on chopsticks to make them look like fine artworks.

Passage 1
(云南省蒙自市第三中学2025-2026学年九年级上学期11月期中英语试题)根据短文内容,判断正误(正确“T”,错误“F”),并将所选答案涂到答题卡的相应位置上。
1.English learners only have one way to ask for something in English.
2.When asking for something, it’s polite to use direct expressions like “Give me that”.
3.If you don’t know whether someone has something, you can ask a yes or no question.
4.In the past, “can” was used to ask for something.
5.In the US, people prefer using “May I have…?” instead of “Can I have…?” when asking for something.
根据第一段“Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this.”可知,英语学习者索要物品的方式有很多,而不是只有一种。
2.根据第二段“Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say ‘Give me that’...”可知,索要物品时不能使用“Give me that”这样的直接表达,这被认为是不礼貌的。
3.根据第二段“If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question.”可知,如果不知道对方是否有某物,可以用是非问句来询问。
4.根据第三段“In the past, ‘can’ was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability.”可知,在过去,“can”不能用来索要物品,而是表示能力。
5.根据第三段“In the US, this is still considered to be wrong and ‘May I have...?’ is preferred.”可知,在美国,人们更倾向于使用“May I have...?”而不是“Can I have...?”来索要物品。
Passage 2

You may have known about many traditional Chinese festivals such as Spring Festival or Lantern Festival, but have you ever heard of Dragon Heads-raising Day?
Dragon Heads-raising Day is also called Spring Dragon Festival. It is on the second day of the second lunar month. It came from an old story. After that day, the Dragon King will wake up from his winter sleep and bring more rain. So that day is the start of spring and farming season.
One of the most interesting things related to the day is about haircut. People believe that a haircut during the first lunar month is not a good idea. It may bring bad things to your uncles. So people can only cut it on or after Dragon Heads-raising Day. Although it’s not true, many people still do it.
There are also other ways to celebrate this festival. For example, people eat food with dragon names. People call noodles dragon’s beard (胡须). Dumplings are dragon’s ears and spring rolls (春卷) are dragon’s scales (鳞). People also do dragon dances and make dragon lanterns. The lanterns stand for people’s best wishes and good luck.

7.根据第二段“After that day, ...bring more rain. So that day is the start of spring and farming season.”可知,在“二月二龙抬头”之后,降雨量通常会增加,这对农业是有好处的,表述正确。
8.根据第三段“People believe that a haircut during the first lunar month is not a good idea. It may bring bad things to your uncles.”可知,人们认为在农历的第一个月理发不是个好主意。它可能会给你叔叔带来不好的事情,而不是在“二月二龙抬头”日,所以此句表述错误。
9.根据第四段“...people eat food with dragon names. ...are dragon’s scales(鳞).”可知,这段是本文的一部分,解释了为什么人们吃有龙名字的食物来庆祝节日。不是全部,所以表述错误。
10.根据第一段“You may have known about...but have you ever heard of Dragon Heads-raising Day?”以及结合全文内容可知,作者想让更多的学生了解“二月二龙抬头”日。因此表述正确。

At the interview, she said, “If I can help other people understand how important our friendship is, and how it has helped me, maybe they’ll be volunteers, too. Kitty, wouldn’t that be great?” With tears running down, we smiled at each other.

25.全文围绕盲盒流行现状、品牌、青少年喜好与消费问题展开,无任何体育运动相关内容,不可能出自儿童体育杂志。

Later, I watched a program about Chinese culture on TV. I was so interested in it that I made the decision to learn Chinese. I found a cultural center in the north of London by chance (偶然). Passage 11
(云南省丽江市实验学校2025-2026学年九年级上学期期中考试英语试卷)Stephen Hawking was not only one of the most talented scientists of his age but also symbolized (代表) the ability of human spirit to overcome physical disability. Whether he was educating the world with his knowledge of the universe, or making fun of himself in TV shows like The Simpsons, his talent and humor made a big difference to people across the world.
On March 14, 2018, the British physicist passed away at his home in Cambridge, England. Since then, “We have lost a great mind and a wonderful spirit,” Berners-Lee wrote.
Hawking will be best remembered for his work in the field of science. He explained his belief that space started with the Big Bang, and will end with black holes. This idea can give us the answers to questions like how did the universe begin. Hawking leaves behind a great legacy (遗产) . His book A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes that came out in 1988, became one of the world’s best-selling science publications. Hawking also managed to overcome many difficulties in his personal life. He developed a serious illness at the age of 21, and he was told he only had a short time to live. However, as we all know, he went on to become one of the greatest minds the world has ever known.
Hawking may no longer be with us, but Hawking will continue to inspire the world for generations to come. As he once said himself, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”

Sometimes people cry when they are sad. Other times people cry tears of joy. But your eyes make tears all the time, whether you are crying or not. Do you know that tears help keep your eyes healthy? They keep your eyes from drying out. A special area of the eye drips (滴) all the time. It keeps the eye humid.
If you begin to cry, there are many more tears. The holes can’t drain all of them. Then extra tears run out onto your face.
Tears help keep eyes safe. If there is something harmful in the air, the eyes fill with tears. These tears coat your eyes. They keep the harmful air out.
Contact lenses (隐形眼镜) can make the eyes too dry. Some people have to add tears to their eyes. They buy bottles of eye drops to keep their eyes wet.

63.If every bee danced the same way, they would find the food more quickly.

68.Hanming thinks that too many polite words may result in AI not giving users the right help.
69.Ethan thinks that kindness is also important to AI.
70.Asha believes that users should not only be very polite to AI but also pay attention to efficiency.

The qipao is a special product that not only shows the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, but also the beauty of other cultures.
71.Lots of mothers wear qipao to wish their kids have good grades in the gaokao.
72.Qipao wasn’t changed during the early 20th century.
