Jake Lee Pinnick is busy preparing food, clothing and house decorations, putting up couplets and visiting friends with his family to celebrate the Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar NewYear.
In 2010, the 32-year-old American traveled to the Wudang Mountains, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in central China’s Hubei Province, to learn martial arts. Pinnick said he was very interested in Chinese Kung Fu from a young age.
When Pinnick first arrived in the Wudang Mountains, he had no earlier training or martial arts experience, so he began with a five-year training program, learning the basics and all about Taoist culture. Pinnick said the first six months were the hardest, because he had to train for eight or nine hours, six days a week, whatever the temperature outside.
After over a decade of hard training, he has mastered various forms of Chinese Kung Fu, including Tai Chi and Qigong, and become a guide with about 200 apprentices (学徒) in China. This year is the 13th Spring Festival that Pinnick has spent in China. He likes the Spring Festival and the traditions here. He also teaches his daughter Selina Lee Pinnick these traditions.
As the new year begins, people are starting new chapters in their lives and making resolutions. Pinnick also has many plans and wishes — he plans on making more efforts to learn the Chinese language this year. In addition to learning Chinese, Pinnick will continue to learn about traditional Chinese culture and how to play Chinese musical instruments in his leisure time, and he will share his experience on social media.
“I think that the experience I’ve had, being a foreigner coming to China and learning the culture from outside, is unique. I hope to introduce Chinese Kung Fu and traditions to more westerners,” he said.
24. What was Pinnick’s main reason for traveling to the Wudang Mountains?
A. To learn Chinese Kung Fu. B. To know about Taoist culture.
C. To visit some places of interest. D. To celebrate the Spring Festival.
25. Which of the following best describes Pinnick?
A. Well-rounded. B. Generous. C. Hardworking. D. Selfless.
26. What can we infer about Pinnick according to the article?
A. He planned to open a Chinese Kung Fu school.
B. He became skillful at different kinds of Kung Fu.
C. He asked his daughter to learn Chinese musical instruments.
D. He practised Kung Fu before coming to the Wudang Mountains.
27. Why does Pinnick hope to share his experience on social media?
A. To become famous online. B. To take in more apprentices.
C. To show off his unique experience. D. To act as a bridge between cultures.

Coke knows that its soda caps often end up as rubbish. So it’s trying to solve the problem by attaching them to the bottle, at least in the United Kingdom.
The new bottles have an attached cap, a design that is supposed to make it easier for consumers to recycle the whole package (包装) at once — and to keep caps out of the dustbin. The change only applies to UK bottles.
“This is a small change that we hope will have a big effect, ensuring that when consumers recycle our bottles, no cap gets left behind,” said Jon Woods, general manager at Coca-ColaGreat Britain, in a statement Tuesday.
Plastic waste is a major environmental problem. It’s also a big public relations problem for companies like Coke. When the company’s bottles or caps end up on beaches or in landfills (垃圾填埋场), consumers recognize them as Coke products, doing great harm to Coke’s reputation (声誉). As a result, more companies are taking steps to try to reduce their waste.
However some environmentalists don’t think highly of Coca-Cola’s efforts, saying they fall short. “Whether their plastic caps are attached or not, the company still produces billions of throwaway plastic bottles every year, harming our environment, our communities and our climate, and influencing our health,” said Graham Forbes, global plastics project lead at Greenpeace USA. “If they truly want to solve the problem, Coca-Cola must focus on reducing plastic by doubling its reuse and refill packaging target to 50% by 2030,” said Forbes.
28. Why do the new Coke bottles have an attached cap?
A. To sell Coke products. B. To collect empty bottles.
C. To keep Coke caps in the dustbin. D. To better recycle Coke packages.
29. What does the underlined phrase “fall short” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Are not enough. B. Are worth praising.
C. Are satisfying. D. Are unnecessary.
30. What can we learn from the text?
A. Coke’s reputation has been destroyed.
B. Coke’s new bottle is used around the world.
C. Plastic waste might do harm to a company’s fame.
D. Coke has doubled its reuse and refill packaging target.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A Small Change with a Big Impact
B. We should Say No to Plastic Waste
C. Coke’s New Bottle Cap doesn’t Come off
D. Coke Keeps Plastic Waste out of the Dustbin

In the modern era, mirrors often show physical images (形象) as well as the mental struggles of self-awareness, especially among teenagers. The glass surfaces, found in bedrooms and bathrooms around the world, have seen the silent battles that many young individuals face.
Appearance anxiety has become a widespread issue, with social media and peer pressure acting as magnifying glasses (放大镜) that mislead them about their self-worth. Filtered (滤镜处理过的) photos posted on platforms like TikTok have created an environment where seeking perfection seems not just desirable but necessary. To make matters worse, the strong desire for the perfect appearance has led many teenagers to make unhealthy comparisons, often resulting in negative self-talks and more worries about their looks.
The deep-rooted problem can affect mental health in particular. Studies have shown that teenagers who are overly concerned with their looks are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and low self-confidence. The pressure to be up to beauty standards is huge, and it often begins at a young age. The seemingly perfect images in magazines, on television and social media platforms create an unrealistic standard for teenagers to measure themselves against. Unfortunately, it can lead to a lasting state of dissatisfaction with their looks.
To solve the problem, it is important to understand that beauty is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It varies from person to person. We ought to encourage teenagers to accept their unique features and to understand that their worth is not defined by their looks. Parents, educators, and society as a whole have a role to play in developing a more acceptable and positive view of beauty. We are also supposed to teach young people that the journey towards self-acceptance is just as important as acquiring great knowledge and developing other skills.
32. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning “mirrors” in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To provide examples.
C. To show his argument. D. To make comparisons.
33. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about?
A. Mental struggles of teenagers. B. Problems faced by teenagers.
C. Causes of teenage appearance anxiety. D. Effects of social media on teenagers.
34. What is a result of teenage appearance anxiety according to the text?
A. Teenagers are not satisfied with beauty standards.
B. Teenagers are more likely to suffer mental problems.
C. Teenagers are more likely to have poor physical health.
D. Teenagers are not satisfied with social media platforms.
35. What does the writer try to do in the last paragraph?
A. Call on parents to understand young people better.
B. Encourage young people to acquire more knowledge.
C. Inspire teenagers to develop as many skills as possible.
D. Give advice on how to deal with teenage appearance anxiety.

On a warm August afternoon in 1987, two-year-old Tommy Copeland was playing near a lake behind his home in Jupiter, Florida. His mother, Sandy, was watching television in the living room. She got up and went into the kitchen for a moment. She had no idea that Tommy had learned how to open the sliding glass door and walked outside.
At the same time, two construction workers, Brad Jachna and Kip Kerfoot, were working on the second floor of a house nearby. The stairs hadn’t been built yet. From the window, Brad noticed Tommy standing by the water. He felt a bit uneasy but went back to work. A moment later, he looked again — the boy was gone. Then he saw a small splash (水花) in the lake.
“The kid’s in the water!” Brad shouted to Kip. Without hesitation, they jumped off the second floor and ran to the lake. Kip dived in immediately. Brad went around the other side and pulled Tommy out. The boy was limp and not breathing. Brad slapped (拍打) his back hard. After a few seconds, Tommy coughed and took his first breath of air. The two workers saved his life.
The local newspaper reported the story, and the two men were praised as heroes. Kip kept a copy of the article on his shop wall for years. And Brad later recalled, “I wasn’t always a nice person, but saving that boy made me feel like I did something good.”
Life went on. Tommy grew up, and the memory of that day slowly faded (褪色). He often wondered about the two men who had pulled him from the water.

【原文】M: When do you think the brain is more active: when we’re awake or when we’re asleep?
W: When we’re awake. Am I right?
M: Well, actually, the brain is busier when we sleep, because our brain needs the time to do a lot of work. That’s why it’s important to get enough sleep. According to a study published in a medical journal, if you didn’t sleep for 24 hours, you’d feel as if you were drunk.
W: You mean we wouldn’t be able to think clearly?
M: Yeah. And if we don’t sleep for a couple of days, our body won’t be able to function properly—we won’t be able to do simple things like having conversations!
W: Wow!
M: Sleep’s really important for our health. For one, we learn and remember things better because the brain uses the time we sleep to prepare itself for the next day.
W: Hmm.
M: But also, if you don’t sleep, you tend to feel hungrier. So you might put on weight.
W: Sounds like sleeping is better than going on a diet!
听下面一段独白,回答以下小题。
【答案】17. A 18. B 19. C 20. A
【原文】M: Good morning, everybody. I hope you are all here for Environment and Development 101. My name is John Robertson, and I’ll be the main lecturer for this course. But we will have some guest lecturers from time to time.
And nobody has left. Great! I guess that means you all intend to take this course. Okay, next I’m going to describe the main contents and purposes of the course. Does anybody know who Howard Odom was? Right. He is known as the father of ecology. He once said, “Everything is connected to everything else.” That statement explains the design of this course. As human knowledge expands, most courses, even first-year courses, get more and more specialized. This course is quite different. It focuses on the connections between different subjects. This 72-hour course meets for two hours each time, and don’t forget you get two credits instead of the usual one. We will try to achieve three main objectives. We will try to get an understanding of what is happening to planet Earth, why it is happening, and hopefully to find some answers to the many problems that we’ll be talking about. OK, it’s coffee time. Back in 15 minutes.
