I. Teaching Objectives

1. Students can hear the two “th” sounds /θ/ and /ð/ and tell them apart by putting a hand on their throat.

2. Students can read the eight “th” words (thank, these, there, them, think, they, three, thin) and the short poem aloud with the right sound.

3. Students can listen and write thin and thank in the two sentences.

II. Key Points and Difficult Points

Key Points

Read the poem and the eight th-words; know that “th” gives /θ/ and /ð/.

Difficult Points

“th” is one sound from two letters, not t + h. Telling the quiet /θ/ (thank, think, three, thin, thirsty) from the buzzing /ð/ (these, there, them, they, this) is the hard part.

III. Teaching Tools

Word cards, the four bear pictures, the poem audio, a small mirror, coloured pens.

IV. Teaching Procedures

Step 1  Lead-in (5 mins)

Show the four bear pictures and ask what the weather is like. The bear says “It’s warm again”. Say thirsty and thin with a hand to the throat so the mouth is already making th.

Take a few quick answers and give no correction at this stage.
