Unit 4 Helping in the community
Part B Let’s learn 第五课 (教学设计)
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Ss can listen, say and use the four action phrases: making the bed, singing old songs, telling a funny story and cleaning the room.
2. Ss can talk about what people are doing now with "He is / She is / They are + verb-ing", and learn the new place "old people’s home".
3. Ss can put a job, an action and a place together to make fun sentences, and start to care for the old people in their community.
II. Key Points and Difficult Points
Key Points
The four phrases making the bed / singing old songs / telling a funny story / cleaning the room, and the pattern He’s / She’s / They’re + verb-ing.
Difficult Points
Choosing is or are (one person or many), and not dropping the -ing after is / are. Telling "He is..." from "They are..." when speaking is the hardest part.
III. Teaching Tools
Four action pictures, verb word cards, a real photo of an old people’s home, a small ball, the audio for Let’s learn, and three coloured strips for the Make-fun-sentences game.

IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up and lead-in (5 mins)
Show a photo of an old people’s home. Ask: Who works here? What can the children do for them? Take a handful of quick answers and give no correction at this stage.
[Purpose] Pull the topic out of their own life and warm up the job and place words they already know.
Step 2: Presentation of Let’s learn (10 mins)
Show the four pictures one by one. Say each sentence, clap on the -ing, and let Ss repeat: She is making the bed. He is singing old songs. He is telling a funny story. They are cleaning the room. Play the audio twice and have Ss point at the right picture.
Read the speech bubble "We’re in an old people’s home. I’m making the bed." in three voices — a quiet one, a loud one and a tired one — then praise one good full read.
[Purpose] Tie every phrase to a clear picture and a clear sound so the new words stick.
Step 3: Practice with is / are (8 mins)
Hold up one person and the class says "He is / She is"; hold up two and they say "They are". Clap once on is and twice on are so they feel the change. Then point and say in pairs.
