An Icy Mass
Our solar system (太阳系) is a vast family of the Sun, eight planets, their moons, countless asteroids, and many icy bodies beyond.
Far beyond the asteroid belt, and even past Neptune's orbit (轨道), a dark mass of ice orbits (绕……的轨道运行) the Sun. This is Pluto, once considered the smallest planet in our solar system. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified (将……重新归类) Pluto as a dwarf planet.
Although its great distance from the Earth makes it difficult for astronomers to study, we do know some things about Pluto. For example, this dwarf planet is only about two-thirds the size of the Earth's moon. We also know that Pluto rotates (旋转) very slowly on its axis (轴). During one day on Pluto, about six days pass on the Earth.
We know, too, that it takes 248 years for Pluto to orbit the Sun. Because of its elliptical (椭圆的) shape, Pluto's path takes it inside Neptune's orbit for several years at a time. In other words, during this period, Pluto is closer to the Sun—and therefore to the Earth—than Neptune is.

Watch out!We asked for letters about con artists. Here are the first three. More to come next week!
There are con artists around!
I was in New York on holiday, and I saw a crowd standing around a young man who was in the street. The man was holding up three playing cards. One of them was a Queen. He put the cards face down on a table and moved them around quickly for a few seconds. Then he invited anyone in the crowd to find the Queen. No one wanted to play, perhaps they were worried about losing money, but then a young woman bet $10 and won. It seemed easy, so I decided to try my luck. The first time I won and the second time too, but then I started losing. In the end, I lost $90 before the young man disappeared with my money. The young woman also disappeared. The truth is that you can't beat a con artist unless he wants you to win.
Jason Wiggins, Blackpool
I was reading in the park when a middle-aged woman with a dog walked by. She asked, "Would you please look after my dog? I need to visit my sick mother in the hospital nearby." I agreed. After she left, an old man walked by. "Nice dog!" he said. "I am a vet. It is a rare dog. It costs about £1,000." When the woman returned from the hospital, she thanked me and told me she had just lost her job and was hard up. I offered to buy the dog and we finally agreed on a price of £200. I really wanted to help her, but I also thought it was a fast way to make some money. Later, I found out that there was nothing special about the dog. I learned an important lesson: There's no such thing as easy money.
Marianne Carter, Swansea
A few weeks ago, I received an email from a Mr. Alika. He said he worked for a bank in Nigeria. In the email, he said that three months before, a foreigner had put $40 million in the bank. The next day the rich foreigner died in a plane crash. The money was still in the bank. Mr. Alika said that he was writing to me because I had the same name and nationality as the dead man. If I sent him $500, he would open an account in my name and put the $40 billion into the new account. He promised we would split the money fifty-fifty. It was clearly a con, so I called the police immediately.

"Museums of the World" Travel Plan
Hi, Margaret! Here's the travel plan for some ________ museums on our "Museums of the World" tour. I'll send you the full itinerary (行程) next week.
The Museum of Bad Art (Boston, U.S.A.) shows what it describes as "art too bad to be ignored (忽略)." The museum hopes to introduce some of the worst art in the world to the widest possible audience. As part of your visit, you'll get to see some truly awful portraits (画像), landscapes and sculptures (雕塑).
The Washington Banana Museum (Auburn, Washington, U.S.A.) is home to 4,000 objects. They are all related to the history of bananas. You'll get a guided tour around the museum. You'll learn all sorts of interesting facts. For example, bananas were first introduced to the U.S.A. in 1878 at the same exhibition in which Alexander Graham Bell's telephone was first shown. The banana is now the best-selling fruit in the U.S.A.
The Hair Museum (Avanos, Türkiye) is located in a cave in Cappadocia, in Central Anatolia. It displays 16,000 samples of people's hair. You will have a chance to add your own hair to the collection. Later in the year, the museum keeper will select 10 donors (捐献者) to attend a pottery workshop. If you're one of them, you'll be invited to stay in his guest house!
The Museu de Carrosses Fúnebres (Barcelona, Spain) is a museum of hearses (灵车). It takes a look at how the dead bodies of the city's local people have been transported to their funerals since the 19th century. Driving a car for a long distance is stressful. Flying is quick but disappointing—flights are often at inconvenient times, there are hours of waiting, and watching the clouds below quickly becomes boring. That's why for many people, going by train is the best way to travel. It's quiet and relaxing—you can get up and walk around, and it's also a great way to meet people. One problem is that train tickets can be expensive. But the new InterRail Global Pass is a cheap and convenient way of travelling around Europe. InterRail is becoming more popular again and every year, a quarter of a million people choose this way to travel. Seventy percent of them are under the age of 25. We talk to two experienced InterRailers ...
Max, 22, a student from Newport
This is my third time InterRail. This year I'm leaving just after my college exams in June and I can't wait for my journey to start. I always travel for a month but buy a 22-day ticket—I like staying for two or three days in one place if I really like it. I'm going to spend ten days in Spain—I always spend three days in Barcelona because I love it and I've got friends there. I'm going to try and visit Portugal this year as well. And after that—who knows? I love the freedom of changing my plans at the last minute.
Top tips:
★ Take some playing cards. It's a good way to pass the time and to make friends during long journeys.
★ It's also a good idea to take some basic medicine. Trust me, there's nothing worse than feeling ill on a train at 4 a.m.!
Eva, 28, a bank clerk from London
I usually go InterRail with my husband in early autumn when it's quieter. We already know southern Europe quite well, so this year we're travelling through Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany to the Czech Republic. We'll celebrate my birthday in Prague and then travel to Poland and back through Germany. It's best not to rush. A big mistake is to plan to visit too many places and then spend every day on the train.
Top tips:
★ Always learn a few basic words in the language of each country you visit—I can say "thank you" in nine languages!
★ Don't forget a battery charger. InterRail is no fun when your camera and mobile phone don't work!
