1.7.2013
Now let's discuss what we just saw. Look at this picture - a sea turtle swimming among plastic bags and bottles. First question: What animals are affected by plastic waste? Yes, turtles, fish, seabirds and many more. Second: How do you feel? Most of us feel sad and worried. Third: Is plastic all bad? This is what we'll find out today. Keep this question in mind as we read.

1.7.2013
Before we read the passage, let's look at this beach picture. First, where can you find plastic in the picture? Yes, there are plastic bags, bottles, and all kinds of waste on the sand. Second, what problems can plastic cause? Think about the words on the screen - environmental problems, ocean danger, land pollution, air pollution. We'll use these words when we answer.

While-reading: Enjoy and Read

While-reading
1, When was plastic invented ?
2, Why was it considered an amazing material ?
3, What did people think of plastic ?
People believed plastic would make life better and it was an “environmental hero”.
It was invented around the 1860s.
Because it was light, easy to shape, long-lasting and cheap.
Read paragraph 1 and answer
1.7.2013
Let's read Paragraph 1 carefully. When was plastic invented? Around the 1860s. Why was it considered amazing? Because it was light, easy to shape, long-lasting and cheap. Many people even saw plastic as an "environmental hero". It quickly replaced wood and natural materials. But wait - is plastic still a hero today? Let's find out in the next paragraphs.
‹#›
1, When was plastic waste first seen in the oceans?
2, How many sea animals were killed every year?
Plastic waste was first seen in the oceans in the 1960s
More than 100,000 sea animals.
While-reading
Read paragraph 2 and answer
1.7.2013
Now we see the dark side of plastic. When was plastic waste first seen in the oceans? In the 1960s. How many sea animals die every year? More than 100,000. And by 2050, there could be even more plastic than fish in the sea by weight. Whales and other sea animals eat plastic by mistake and die. The former "hero" has slowly shown its dark side.
‹#›
1, How are these animals affected?
Birds
Bears
Cows
Humans
2, Is it hard to deal with the problems ? Why ?
While-reading
Read paragraph 3-4 and complete
wings get tied in plastic lines
heads get stuck in plastic bins
mistake plastic bags for food
eat 5 grams of plastic a week
Yes, it is. It may take hundreds of years to break down.
Hiding waste in the ground doesn't solve the problems.
Burning it produces thick smoke that causes air pollution.
1.7.2013
Plastic is also causing problems on land. Birds' wings get tied in plastic lines. Bears' heads get stuck in plastic bins. Cows mistake plastic bags for food. And even humans are eating plastic waste! On average, we eat five grams of plastic a week. That's like eating a whole credit card! Plastic pollution is not just an ocean problem - it's everywhere, including on land and in our own bodies.
‹#›
1, What was the writer's opinion about the plastic?
Plastic makes life easier, yet it brings long-lasting troubles to our planet.
While-reading
Read paragraph 5 and think
1.7.2013
Plastic waste is really hard to deal with. Why? Because it may take hundreds of years to break down. So hiding the waste in the ground doesn't really solve the problem. And burning it also produces thick smoke that causes air pollution. It's a real dilemma - what can we do with all this plastic? This is why we need to think carefully about how we use plastic.
‹#›
a. To remind readers that plastic is convenient and useful.
b. To call on people to use plastic wisely and protect our planet.
c. To argue that we should stop using plastic completely.

1.7.2013
Now let's retell the story using these key words. Start with: Plastic was invented in the 1860s... It was once called an "environmental hero"... But in the 1960s, its dark side appeared... It brings ocean danger, land pollution and air pollution... It takes hundreds of years to break down... With no Planet B, we must use plastic wisely. Who can try?

Think and Share
1,Which problem of plastic do you find most shocking? why?
Eg: I think it’s most shocking that humans eat five grams of plastic every week. Tiny pieces of plastic float in the air and spread all over the earth. It is really harmful to our health.
1.7.2013
Now let's think: what can we do in our daily life? Small changes can make a big impact. We can use reusable bags and bottles instead of single-use plastic. We can sort waste for recycling. We can avoid using too much plastic. And we can speak up to protect nature. What changes will you make? Share with your partner.

Think and Share
2,Do you think humans will stop using plastic?
why or why not?
Eg: I don’t think we will stop using plastic. It’s light, cheap and convenient.

Work in Groups
Do we have to stop development to protect nature?
No, we don't have to stop. We need a better way to develop.
Use green energy, build clean factories, set up national parks.
We must develop carefully, think
about the earth's future,and keep
a fine balance with nature.
1.7.2013
Now let's discuss in groups. The writer says rapid development has made us care less for nature. So the question is: do we have to stop development to protect nature? The answer is no. We don't have to stop development. We need a better way to develop. We can use green energy instead of coal. We can build clean factories. We can set up more national parks to protect animals. We must develop carefully and keep a fine balance with nature.
