Riverside Town: Then and Now
Students at Riverside Middle School have made a display about the changes in their hometown.
Transport
Fifteen years ago, there was only one narrow and rough road leading out of the town. A trip to the nearest city often took several hours. Today, a wide highway runs past the town. A new tunnel goes through the mountain, and a bridge links the town with villages on the other side of the river. Travelling is much easier than before.
Environment
The hills around Riverside Town used to be sandy. Sandstorms sometimes damaged farmland. With the government’s support, local people planted bushes with long roots and then planted more trees. Today, much of the land is covered with green plants, and there are fewer sandstorms.
Business
In the past, farmers sold most of their products at a small local market. Now the town has become a tourist attraction. Visitors buy local corn fruit and vegetables. Some villagers also sell products online, and e-payment is common in many shops.
Housing
Many families used to live in small flats. Now there is new housing in the town.
Public Services
In the past, people sometimes had to travel far to see a doctor. A hospital and a library have also been built, so local life is more convenient.
39. How many aspects of change are introduced in the display?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
40. Which part of the display talks about selling local products online?

A. The roads are narrower than before. B. The hills are still covered with sand.
C. People can now see a doctor in the town. D. Visitors cannot buy local products.
42. What is the main purpose of the material?
A. To explain how to build a highway. B. To show how Riverside Town has changed.
C. To teach students how to grow corn. D. To compare two different cities.
C
Digital life has become part of everyday life in many Chinese communities. People can use phones to pay electricity bills, check bus times and report public problems. These services save time and make community work more efficient.
However, digital life is not easy for everyone. Some elderly residents (居民) are afraid of pressing the wrong button. Some worry about online safety. To help them, several communities have set up learning corners. Volunteers use large-print cards and simple language to explain each step.
One volunteer, Chen Le, says patience is more important than speed. “We should not just tell elderly people what to do. We should let them practise,” he explains. After three lessons, a 72-year-old resident could send photos of a broken streetlight through the app. The workers repaired it the next day.
Digital tools can make life easier, but they should never leave anyone behind. A truly modern community is one where technology serves people of different ages.
43. What can people do with phones according to the passage?
A. Pay electricity bills. B. Stop all traffic accidents.
C. Build schools online. D. Replace all volunteers.
44. Why do some elderly residents need help?
A. They do not like clean streets. B. They may worry about online safety.
C. They want to move to other cities. D. They cannot read any notices.
45. What does Chen Le think is more important than speed?
A. Patience. B. Money. C. Noise. D. Luck.
46. What does “leave anyone behind” mean in the passage?
A. Make everyone run faster. B. Forget or exclude some people.
C. Ask everyone to leave home. D. Put people behind the door.
D
Many old factories once stood along the East River. They produced cloth and paper, and they provided jobs for local people. As the city grew, some factories closed because their machines were old and they polluted the river. For a few years, the factory area was empty and quiet. Instead of building tall flats on the land, the city decided to turn the area into a riverside park.
Workers cleaned the soil, repaired the strongest factory building and planted many trees. The old chimney (烟囱) was kept as a symbol of the city’s working history. Today, the park is a popular place. The repaired factory building has become an exhibition hall. Students go there to learn how the city developed. A small reading room has also opened inside. Outside, families walk along the river, and artists paint under the trees.
The project has taught people an important lesson. Development does not always mean pulling everything down. Sometimes, a city can become more modern by giving old places new life. This kind of change saves resources, protects memories and creates useful public space.
47. Why did some factories close?
A. Their machines were old and they polluted the river.
B. The workers wanted to travel.
C. The river became too wide.
D. The city needed more schools at once.
48. What was kept as a symbol of working history?
A. The old chimney. B. The old gate ticket. C. The broken window. D. The wooden bridge.
49. Which idea does the passage support?
A. All old buildings must be removed.
B. Public space should not be built near rivers.
C. Old places can be reused in meaningful ways.
D. Factories should never change their functions.
E
Class 9 held a project called “One Street, Two Times”. Students chose one old photo of a street and took a new photo from the same place. Then they interviewed residents and wrote short reports.
Han Mei chose Garden Street. In the old photo, there were small food stalls (摊位) and many bicycles. The road was crowded and dirty. Now the stalls have moved into a clean indoor market. The street has trees on both sides and a special lane for bikes.
Lin Tao chose Bridge Road. His father said that people once had to walk across a narrow wooden bridge. In rainy seasons, it was dangerous. Now there is a strong stone bridge and a bus stop nearby. It takes only fifteen minutes to get to the city centre.
Zhou Yu chose the area behind the old cinema. It used to be dark at night. Last year, it became a small square with lights, benches and exercise machines. Every evening, children play there and elderly people take exercise.
The students learned that change is not only in buildings. It is also in people’s daily feelings: safer roads, cleaner air, easier travel and more chances to meet neighbours.
50. What was Garden Street like in the old photo?
A. It had many trees and bike lanes. B. It was crowded and dirty.
C. It was beside a new library. D. It had a large stone bridge.
51. Why was the old wooden bridge dangerous?
A. It was too far from the school. B. It was crowded with buses.
C. It was unsafe in rainy seasons. D. It was used only at night.
52. What did the students learn from the project?
A. Changes only happen in big cities.
B. Old streets should never be repaired.
C. Changes can improve people’s daily feelings.
D. Taking photos is more important than interviews.
F
For as long as I can remember, there was a pickle jar (腌菜罐) in my parents’ bedroom. Every night, Dad would empty his pockets and drop his coins into the jar.
When the jar was full, Dad would sit at the kitchen table to prepare the coins for the bank. We put them in a small box between us in his old truck.
Every time we went to the bank, Dad would say, “Those coins are going to keep you out of the textile mill (纺织厂), son. You’re going to do better than me, my son.” After putting the coins into the bank account, we would celebrate with ice cream.
Dad showed me the coins in his hand after the clerk (柜员) gave him change. “When we get home, we’ll start filling the jar again,” he said happily. He always let me drop the first coins into the empty jar. “You’ll get to college with these coins,” he said.
Years later, I finished college and moved to another town for work. During a visit home, I noticed the pickle jar was gone. It had done its job. I realized how much Dad loved me and had taught me about hard work and hope.
My dad didn’t talk much and never gave me long speeches about trying hard or believing in myself. But the pickle jar taught me these qualities better than the flowery words ever could.

1. Over the past ten years, great changes ________ in this small town.
A. took place B. will take place C. have taken place D. take place
【答案】C

A. used to sleeping, is used to get up B. is used to sleeping, used to get up
C. is used to sleep, used to get up D. used to sleep, is used to getting up

used to do sth.过去常常做某事;be used to doing sth. 第一空,根据“but now...”可知,前半句描述过去的情况,应用used to sleep;第二空,后半句描述现在的习惯,应用is used to getting up。

根据句中“He will be back soon.”

Digital life has become part of everyday life in many Chinese communities. People can use phones to pay electricity bills, check bus times and report public problems. These services save time and make community work more efficient.

After three lessons, a 72-year-old resident could send photos of a broken streetlight through the app. The workers repaired it the next day.

例文
A Person Who Inspired Me
I’ve changed a lot because of a special person.
In the past, I was lazy and afraid of difficulties. I often gave up easily. However, my English teacher, Ms. Li, inspired me. She is hard-working and patient. She always encouraged me when I failed. With her help, I study hard now and have become confident. I have made great progress in my studies.
In the future, I want to be a teacher like her to help more students. She is a light in my life.

①描述过去自身缺点;
②介绍敬佩的人以及优秀品质;
③写自己现在的改变与收获;
自身不足:lazy/afraid of difficulties/give up easily/like giving up等
人物品质:hard-working/patient/warm-hearted等

未来计划:want to be a person like her/help others/help each other等
