Henry started a business with great enthusiasm (热情), but just after few months, his business failed and went under. After that, Henry stayed out of work for quite some time. When his teacher Roy got to know that, he invited Henry to his home.
Roy welcomed him and then asked, “Why don’t you try some other work?”
Henry replied, “I started a business. I worked so hard and I gave my everything to it, yet that business failed.”
Roy comforted him, saying, “But that’s life, sometimes we get success and sometimes we don’t. This doesn’t mean we should stop working.”
“What’s the point of doing work when I can’t be sure of success?” Henry replied impatiently.
Roy took Henry to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Henry said, “It’s dead and useless.”
Roy replied, “When I sowed (播种) its seed, I did everything right for it. I watered it, and took great care of it but it still died.” Roy continued, “Doing work is the same. No matter how hard you try, you cannot decide what happens in the end. You can control only those things which are in your hands.”
Henry asked, “But if there is no guarantee (确保) of success, then what’s the use of trying doing anything?”
Roy said, “Well, if you stop trying, you’re not going to do anything big in your life.”
“But if success is only a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much hard work and putting in so much money and time?” questioned Henry as he was about to leave.
Just then, Roy said, “Before you leave, I want to show you one more thing.” He took Henry to another room. There was a pile of big red tomatoes lying there.
Henry just couldn’t get the point and asked, “Why are you showing me this?”
Roy said, “These tomatoes you see are result of not giving up on growing plants even after failing before. I didn’t stop after seeing those dead plants. Instead, I sowed seeds again and took care of them. This time the plants grew. Similarly, if you keep trying continuously, your chances of getting success are greatly increased. But if you give up because of failures, then life does not give you any reward (回报).”
Henry finally learnt the lesson of success. He understood what he had to do and left with renewed energy.
24.Why did Roy show Henry a dead tomato plant at first?
A.To show he made the same mistake as Henry. B.To ask Henry to offer him some advice and help.
C.To tell Henry things don’t always go the way as planned. D.To advise Henry to predict what will happen in the future.
25.How did Henry feel the moment Roy showed him the big red tomatoes in another room?

Did you ever wish you could show your dreams to your friends or family? Now you might be able to, with a new device (设备) that uses AI to create videos from spoken words.
The Dream Recorder, created by the Dutch design studio Modem, is a bedside device on which you can record your dreams and play them back as short videos.
The idea is that as soon as you wake up, you push a record button on the Dream Recorder and speak into it—in any language—describing what you remember of your dream.
AI technology will then interpret (解读) your spoken dream and create a short video based on it in a visual style (视觉风格) of your choice. You can then play back this video on the Dream Recorder’s screen.
The creators of the Dream Recorder say these videos can be used to help you think about the meaning of your dreams and how they might affect your waking life.
However, you can’t keep these dream videos forever, because the Dream Recorder only has enough memory for seven days of dreams. That should be long enough to see if there are any repeated themes in your dreams, while keeping your mind in the present.
The Dream Recorder is also an open-source (源代码开放的) DIY device that you can build yourself. All the code and the details you need to build it are available to download for free online. All you need to do is buy or 3D print the parts you need to make it.
Modem is an unusual design studio because it has set itself an end date in 2030. This is meant to inspire the designers to take chances, experiment and create work that is focused on the present moment.
27.According to the passage, what should you do first to use the Dream Recorder after waking up?
A.Choose a visual style for the video. B.Speak your dream into the device.
C.Push the record button. D.Play back the video on the screen.
28.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The Dream Recorder can store dreams for a month.
B.You have to pay to download the code to build the device.
C.Modem studio plans to close next year.
D.The device can understand and work with different languages.
29.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The Future of AI Technology B.A New DIY Bedside Device
C.Turn Your Spoken Dreams into Videos D.The Secret Life of Modem Studio
D
Have you ever wondered why some teams work so well together while others struggle (努力争取) to reach agreements? A recent study led by researchers from Keio University in Japan might hold the key to this question. It shows that when people work closely together on a shared task, their brains actually “sync up”. This fascinating discovery belongs to the field of second-person neuroscience, a new area focusing on how two people’s brains work together during social activities. To carry out this research, scientists used a technology called hyper-scanning (超扫描技术), which records the brain activity of multiple people at the same time and compares their brain reactions.
The experiment involved 78 participants, divided into 39 pairs. Each pair faced a creative challenge: designing and furnishing a unique digital room within a specially developed computer game. They could work together without strict time limits and were asked to use minimal verbal (最低限度的言语) communication, allowing researchers to focus on non-verbal interactions. Additionally, each participant completed the same task alone on a separate occasion, helping researchers compare and study brain activity differences between solo and group work. During the experiment, researchers not only videotaped each pair’s work process but also had every participant wear special headgear. This headgear is a special tool for the research, which helps researchers to get correct results and to monitor their brain neurons (神经元). The brain neurons are basic cells that transmit and process information in the human brain.
The headgear continuously tracked how neurons reacted when participants discussed ideas or made decisions, while the videos recorded how often and how long each pair made eye contact. After collecting all data, researchers presented their findings in a detailed chart, showing a clear correlation (相关性) between eye contact duration (时长) and brain synchronization levels. The results were surprising. When working in pairs, specific groups of neurons in one person’s brain would activate, and almost the same group would become active in their partner’s brain. Yasuyo Minagawa, the lead researcher, described this rare coupling as “two brains functioning as a single, coordinated system.”
This special neural coupling, called “between-brain synchronization,” became significantly stronger when both participants looked directly at each other, leading the team to conclude that mutual (相互的) eye contact plays a key role in improving understanding of each other’s hidden intentions and true emotions. Minagawa also noted that this finding fits with the well-known “we mode” (“我们模式”) phenomenon, where two people working together seem to “share a mind” and react to situations similarly. Looking ahead, the research team plans to further explore how other common social interactions, such as face-to-face conversations and small facial expressions, influence brain function. They hope future studies will uncover more secrets about how human connections shape and even change our neural activity patterns.
30.Why did the research team ask participants not to talk too much during the experiment?
A.To study how unspoken signals help people work as a team successfully.
B.To prevent different languages from getting in the way of their work.
C.To challenge the participants’ ability to solve problems under great pressure.
D.To prove that not speaking is a better way to communicate than talking.
31.What can we infer about “second-person neuroscience” from the passage?
A.It has replaced traditional brain research methods.
B.It studies the communication between people instead of single brains.
C.It is a new field with no practical uses now.
D.It can only be carried out by hyper-scanning technology.
32.What does the underlined word “synchronization” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Separation. B.Difference. C.Independence. D.Connection.
33.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.How a Brain Experiment Helps Improve Teamwork
B.Eye contact Alone makes Teams More successful
C.A Study: Team Understanding Improves When People Really Look at Each Other
D.Second-person Neuroscience Explains How Team Brains Work Together
第二部分

四、阅读表达(第34 — 36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
Learning a Foreign Language
There are many aspects (方面) to language learning, such as how words are said, which words are chosen and what forms of words are used. All of these aspects together can make learning a foreign language difficult. But some advice might make learning a new language easier and more fun.
Don’t worry too much about pronouncing words the wrong way.
Pronunciation is important, of course. It helps listeners to understand what someone says more clearly. But the most important step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it. As for learning any new skill, practice makes perfect. And most of the time, the native (本地的) speaker is glad to help improve the pronunciation of the words.
Don’t be afraid to guess the meaning of what someone says.
There are tens of thousands of words in English. It is impossible to know all of them. You may use context (上下文) and body language to guess what others say. For example, when a person says “Hola” and waves his hand, one might guess that the person is giving a greeting. Whether it means “Hello” or “Good morning”, it is not necessarily important at that moment to know the exact meaning.
Don’t give up.
Learning a new language or skill always takes time. Many will give up learning because it is too hard or boring. Some may think that other people will make fun of them for making mistakes. But it’s OK to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect, after all. Don’t lose hope and keep trying.
In the end, learning a new language can be difficult, but remember that it can give great advantages. Learning a language doesn’t just mean the ability to speak in that different language. Don’t forget that learning a language can also include making new friends and experiencing new cultures!
34.What is the most important step in learning a new language?
35.How do you guess the meaning of what someone says?
36.Why is it OK to make mistakes when learning a new language?
37.Is learning a foreign language important? Why or why not?

A.Excited. B.Confused. C.Awful. D.Hopeful.
26.What lesson did Henry learn in the end?
A.Energy and care are keys to avoiding failures. B.Failure can be a step towards success in our life.
C.We can get the expected results if we don’t give up. D.Success will be guaranteed as long as we work hard.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.C

【答案】30.A 31.B 32.D 33.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了日本庆应大学的一项研究,揭示了团队合作中大脑同步的现象,并探讨了眼神接触在促进这种同步中的作用。
【详解】30.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“They could work together without strict time limits and were asked to use minimal verbal communication, allowing researchers to focus on non-verbal interactions.” 故选A。
31.推理判断题。根据文章第一段“This fascinating discovery belongs to the field of second-person neuroscience, a new area focusing on how two people’s brains work together during social activities.”可知,这一发现属于第二人称神经科学领域,这是一个研究两人大脑在社交活动中如何协同工作的新领域。由此可推断,该领域研究的是人际互动而非单一大脑活动。故选B。
32.词句猜测题。根据文章第三段“When working in pairs, specific groups of neurons in one person’s brain would activate, and almost the same group would become active in their partner’s brain.”可知,两人合作时,一方大脑中特定的神经元群会被激活,另一方大脑中几乎相同的神经元群也会被激活。结合“a clear correlation between eye contact duration and brain synchronization levels”并结合选项可知,眼神接触持续时间和大脑同步水平之间存在明显的相关性,因此“synchronization”指大脑活动的同步性,即“连接”。故选D。

【答案】34.The most important step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it. 35.You may/can use context and body language to guess what someone says. /By using context and body language.
36.Because nobody is perfect. 37.Yes, I think learning a foreign language is important. Because I can not only get the ability to speak in that different language but also make new friends and experience new cultures.
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了学习外语的一些建议。
【详解】34.根据第三段“But the most important step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it.”可知,学习一门新语言最重要的一步是练习说。故填The most important step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it.
35.根据第五段“You may use context (上下文) and body language to guess what others say.”可知,可以通过上下文和肢体语言来猜测别人说什么。故填You may/can use context and body language to guess what someone says. /By using context and body language.
36.根据倒数第二段“But it’s OK to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect, after all.”可知,犯错误是可以的,毕竟没有人是完美的。故填Because nobody is perfect.
37.根据最后一段“Learning a language doesn’t just mean the ability to speak in that different language. Don’t forget that learning a language can also include making new friends and experiencing new cultures!”可知,学习一门语言不仅能够用不同的语言说话,也可以结交新朋友和体验新文化。故填Yes, I think learning a foreign language is important. Because I can not only get the ability to speak in that different language but also make new friends and experience new cultures.

【答案】例文
It is common that teenagers argue with their parents sometimes. Once, I argued with my parents when I was using my phone to play games. My parents got angry and took my phone away. I was really upset.
Knowing that they did so just to do me good, I finally picked up my courage and sat down with my parents. I told them I appreciated their help and apologized for playing with my phone for too long. I promised I would try to manage my time well. Surprisingly, my parents didn’t criticize me but gave me a big hug. They told me that I had learned to solve the problem and they were really proud of me. We were all happy that we worked out the problem by communicating with each other.
From this experience, I have learned that good communication is the key to solving problems and building trust.
