So, is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It’s certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. A typical family is smaller now, so parents have got more money to spend ____5____ each child. And, many things are cheaper than they were in the past.
Technology is probably the greatest change. Forty years ago, no one ____6____ imagine a world with tiny computers, tablets and amazing smartphones. And now these things are our most essential possessions—we can’t imagine ____7____ without them.
However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it’s just us, with our computer or television. Teenagers aren’t as ____8____ they were in the past because they don’t do enough exercise. And although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today feel more ____9____ than teenagers in the past.
What do you think? ____10____ is teenage life better these days? Is it because of technology, more learning resources or more choices?

B. Choose the best answer. (12分)
根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案。
Feeling positive is not always easy or helpful. Sometimes, people try to be positive all the time, even when someone is sad or upset. This is called toxic positivity. It happens when people are told to ignore their negative feelings and only think about good things. A survey was done at Ashton Secondary School in July. It included 500 students aged 12-18. The students were asked about their experiences with toxic positivity. They were also asked which statements were most comforting when they felt sad.
The survey found that many students did not feel better when others told them to “look on the bright side” or “other people have it worse”. These statements often made students feel guilty or ignored. For example, Charlie, 12, said that when his pet dog died, someone told him to cheer up. This made him feel worse because he thought he should not be sad. Iris, 18, said that when friends told her to focus on the good things in her life after failing an important exam, it did not help. She felt that people did not understand her sadness.
About 42% of students experienced toxic positivity once in the past year. Another 31% said they experienced it more than once, while 27% said they did not experience it at all. Many students said that these “positive” messages were not useful when they were facing problems. Instead, they appreciated statements that accepted their feelings, such as “That must be really hard”, “I’m here if you need to talk.” and “Is there anything I can do to help?”
The survey shows that listening and understanding are more important than always trying to make someone feel better. People need to be allowed to feel sad or angry. Supportive words that respect emotions help students feel understood and less alone. In conclusion, toxic positivity can be harmful. True support comes from listening, empathy and kindness, not from forcing someone to be happy.
32. What is “toxic positivity”?
A. Encourage themselves to stay cheerful even when upset.
B. Share negative feelings and ask others for advice.
C. Accept negative feelings and focus on bad things.
D. Push away sad feelings and focus on good things.
33. Which sentence can comfort sad students?
A. That must be really hard. B. Look on the bright side.
C. You are lucky. Stop thinking about it. D. Cheer up. Everything will be fine soon.
34. How did Charlie feel after his dog died when others told him to cheer up?
A. It made him feel ignored, as if his sadness did not matter.
B. He felt worse, because he thought he should not be sad.
C. He tried to calm down and stop thinking about it.
D. The words gave him hope that he would feel better soon.
35. Which pie chart matches the survey data?
A. B. C. D.
36. Which of the following works best for someone feeling sad?
A. Advice, rules and strong control. B. Silence, time and being alone.
C. Jokes, gifts and good news. D. Attention, understanding and kindness.
37. What is the writer’s attitude towards toxic positivity?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Uncertain.

Rudyard Kipling was born in Mumbai, India, on 30th December 1865. He enjoyed his early life in India very much. However, when he was five years old, he was sent to England for school. There, he lived with a family in Portsmouth. Later, his mother found out that Mrs Holloway, the woman who looked after him, was treating him badly. So she moved him to a boarding school in Devon.
Life at the new school was not easy either. Kipling was bullied and had to live under very strict rules. However, he also made some close friends and enjoyed jokes and fun moments with them. He later used some of these school experiences in Stalky & Co. (1899), a novel about teenage boys at a British boarding school.
During his school years, Kipling’s headmaster helped him get into writing. He encouraged Kipling to edit the school paper and praised the poems he wrote for it. When Kipling sent some of his poems home, his father had them printed privately as Schoolboy Lyrics in 1881. These were Kipling’s first published works.
In 1882, Kipling returned to India and began working as a journalist for a newspaper. There, his writing really began to develop. He wrote many short stories, and many of them were published in the newspaper. In 1888, he wrote another collection of verse, or poetry.
His memories of India, school life, loneliness and friendship gave him material for his writing. Later, he wrote famous works such as The Jungle Book and The Just So Stories. In 1907, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Kipling’s life shows that 5 can shape a writer’s mind and become part of powerful stories.

【答案】
A challenge I’ve faced
In my life, the most impressive challenge was learning to swim. In primary school, I was terrified of water and wanted to give up as my classmates swam freely.
However, with my PE teacher's help, I practiced holding my breath and floating repeatedly. Gradually, I overcame my fear and mastered the skill.
This experience taught me that nothing is impossible if we keep trying. It made me confident and brave, proving that we can overcome any difficulty by never giving up.
