I went straight to the police chief (警长) for help after I found the white elephant missing. The police station was busy, but I was led into the chief’s quiet office.
“I have lost a white elephant,” I said anxiously (焦急地).
He stood up quickly. “A white elephant! How great! Tell me everything.”
“The elephant belongs to the King of Siam (暹罗). It is a priceless gift. I must get it back as soon as possible.”
“Do not worry,” the chief replied calmly. “I shall call every detective in the city at once. They will look for the animal day and night. We never fail in such cases.”
“I can pay all the costs for the whole search,” I told him sincerely.
The chief rang a bell at once. Several detectives hurried into the room. He gave clear orders right away. Every man looked serious and fully ready for the difficult task.
The next morning, I got many different reports. One detective wrote: I saw a large animal walking beside the river last night. Another said: The elephant may have gone into the quiet countryside far away.
Day after day, more reports arrived one after another. Every time I visited the police station, the chief smiled confidently. “We are making great progress. Trust our men completely.”
Weeks slowly passed. I spent thousands of dollars on the search. Still there was no sign of the huge elephant. I became deeply worried and upset, checking my phone every hour for news.
At last, a message came unexpectedly. They found the elephant in a dark street. When I arrived, my heart sank. The white elephant had been dead for several days. All the busy work, endless reports and high costs turned out to be useless. It was easy to see that the police only pretended (假装) to work hard in front of visitors.

Today, plenty of energy is needed in our daily life, so we have to look for new ways to produce energy. Luckily, Chinese scientists are working on a green-energy project — photovoltaic (光伏) roads. The world’s first test road of this kind appeared in Jinan, Shandong, and it may offer us a new way of producing clean energy on public roads.
Photovoltaic roads are special road surfaces with solar panels (太阳能板). Unlike common roads built only for traffic, these new-style roads can be used for another reason. First, cars and buses can run safely on them. Second, they take in sunlight and turn solar energy into electricity. The power they create can light street-lights, supply nearby public buildings or be sent into the city power network.
Photovoltaic roads bring several clear advantages. Since roads spread all over cities, engineers do not need huge pieces of extra land to set up solar equipment (设备). Besides, energy from the sun is renewable (可再生的). Once built, a photovoltaic road can produce clean power year after year without burning coal or gas. This helps greatly to cut down pollution.
However, this new technology still faces great challenges. The solar panels on roads are easily damaged by heavy traffic. Dust and rainwater may also cover the road surface and reduce power production. Engineers are testing strong protective layers (保护层) to solve these problems. High building costs also slow down its development. It will take much time before photovoltaic roads can be widely used across the country.
Many experts hold the view that photovoltaic roads have a bright future. With technology improvements, they may become an important part of China’s green-energy plan. Although we still have a long way to go, this creative idea shows how humans can make full use of public space for a greener world.
23.What is the main purpose of photovoltaic roads according to the passage?
A.To reduce traffic accidents on city roads.
B.To provide new parking spaces for city cars.
C.To carry traffic and create clean solar power.
D.To store plenty of digital information for cities.
24.According to Paragraph 4, which of the following is TRUE about photovoltaic roads?
A.Photovoltaic roads are widely used in many cities now.
B.Dust on the surface cannot influence the production of electricity.
C.More than one difficulty is slowing the development of photovoltaic roads.
D.Engineers have found perfect protective layers to stop panels from being damaged.
25.Which picture can best show the working process of a photovoltaic road?
A. B.
C. D.
26.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Photovoltaic roads can avoid power-production losses.
B.Lower costs may help photovoltaic roads develop faster.
C.Many cities are testing this kind of road all around China.
D.Engineers are now testing strong protective layers to solve the problems.
D
The word “Zhiyin”, which means close friends, comes from the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period.
Boya was good at playing the guqin. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi, a woodcutter who happened to pass by, could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. Since Boya had to return to his state, they agreed to meet again in the following year.
Unfortunately, when getting back to visit Ziqi, Boya heard that his friend had died from a disease (疾病). Boya was so sad and in front of Ziqi’s tomb (墓), he played again the music he had played when they first met. The feeling of the music was so strong that it was as if the rivers and the mountains were crying. When finishing playing, Boya broke his guqin into pieces. From then on, Boya never played again.
People in the Song Dynasty built the Guqin Tai in Hanyang to memorize the deep friendship between Boya and Ziqi. It became an essential part of the local culture.
Zhiyin culture has new development in the new period. The famous ancient Chinese classical (古典的) music piece Gaoshan Liushui was performed during the G20 Summit in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in 2016. The musical performance not only showed the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, but also expressed China’s willingness to develop its friendship with people from around the world.
27.Why did Boya and Ziqi become good friends?
A.They often went out on boat. B.They often cut wood together.
C.Ziqi could understand Boya’s music. D.They often played the guqin together.
28.What can we know from Paragraph 3?
A.Boya and Ziqi met again.
B.Boya actually only met Ziqi once.
C.Boya broke his date with Ziqi at last.
D.Boya often played the guqin in memory of Ziqi.
29.The underlined word “essential” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A.interesting B.important C.dangerous D.common
30.Paragraph 5 is mainly about ________.
A.the new role of Zhiyin culture B.the importance of classical music

Sam is the kindest person in our class. He is always ready to help others. Last term, when I was weak in English, he spent his free time helping me with grammar after school every day. Thanks to him, I made great progress. Sam also studies hard and is one of the top students. What’s more, he often does volunteer work at the old people’s home. Besides, he is polite and easy-going, so everyone likes him.
I hope Sam can keep his kind heart and achieve his dream. I believe he truly deserves this honour.
Yours,
Simon
