Have you ever seen a flute (长笛)? What does it look like? Do you know how old it is? Now let’s learn more about it—a traditional Chinese musical instrument.
Some scientists found flutes have a history of 7,000 years. According to research, the first known flute appeared in the Yellow River Valley in China. And it was made of the wing bone of a crane (鹤).
Ancient people dealt with the bones with great effort and put five to seven holes on it. Scientists surprisingly found the ancient flute could still be played. A player held the flute up to his mouth. The air moved through the flute, and then it made a musical sound. The player pressed different keys on the flute to make different musical sounds or notes. “It makes a sweet and pleasant sound, like a recorder,” one scientist described.
Later, most flutes are made of bamboo. They are generally dissevered into two types. In the north, the flutes which are used to accompany (伴奏) the Bangzi Opera are called Bang Di. These kinds of flutes are short and thin. In the south, the flutes which are used to accompany the Kunqu Opera are called Qu Di. These kinds of flutes are longer and thinner than the Bang Di and the music style is gentler. Now, some flutes are even made of plastic (塑料).
Now, because it sounds great and is easy to learn, the flute is one of the most popular traditional Chinese instruments in Asia. It requires a certain amount of training and skills to play it well. Will there be more changes of the flute? No one can know, but you can be sure that flute makers will always be on the way to look for better quality of sound.
12. What can we know about the flute?
A. It first appeared abroad. B. It has a very long history.
