Logically, you may know that there’s more to life than high school. But your teenage brain doesn’t. Because your brain is still not fully developed, most of the challenges you will face in high school will feel like life or death situations. Which are these problems and what can you do about them?
If you’re in junior high or high school, chances are, you are experiencing at least TWO or THREE of these CHALLENGES DAILY.
Unhealthy Relationships
Though it’s natural and a good thing for you to want to separate (使…分离) yourself from your parents because it means you are getting ready to be an adult, some problems are likely to stem from (源自于) separating yourself in unhealthy ways, such as breaking family rules, hanging out with the wrong type of friends, and being secretive. In fact, you may not be ready to make every decision on your own.
How To Form Healthy Relationships
Keep communication lines open.
Focus on having fun, and allowing for some form of independence through something like a part-time job.
Bullying
Teens that bully other kids are usually looking to make themselves feel powerful because, in some other aspect of their lives, they feel powerless. Unfortunately, bullying is extremely common in high schools everywhere and needs to stop.
How To Overcome Bullying
Report the bully and have your parents talk to their parents. If that doesn’t help, learn how to react.
The best thing to do is to walk away from negative situations. Since this is not always possible, learn a form of self-defense, such as karate.
Disorganization / Overwhelm (压力过载)
Organization in high school is important. Not knowing when things are due or not having a schedule to rely on can make anyone feel like they’re going crazy. The more organized you are, the less overwhelmed and stressed you will feel.
Solutions
Get yourself a planner to write in or share phone calendars with your parents.
Make sure to enter tasks in your calendar as they come up.
21. Which will result from separating yourself in improper ways?
A. Following family rules. B. Making wrong decisions.
C. Making friends with others. D. Sharing personal secrets with parents.
22. How to be an organized student in high school?
A. Make a schedule. B. Keep your phone calendars secret.
C. Feel less overwhelmed and stressed. D. Realize the importance of organization.

I was 14 when I first met Mrs. Korthaus, an English teacher at our rural high school. Her energy and confidence filled every corner of the classroom. More importantly, she created a safe space where we could make mistakes and discover through trial and error who we wanted to become. Growing up in a small industrial town, I feared success and imagined staying right where I was forever. Mrs. Korthaus helped me see the potential (潜力) in myself, turning literature into window to the outside world.
More than 25 years later, as an well-known writer, I took an urgent offer to teach an introductory English course at a local community college. Most of my 40 students were training for manufacturing or healthcare jobs, often working long hours. For them, literature was hardly a natural passion. Remembering Mrs. Korthaus, I avoided adding unnecessary pressure. Instead of demanding attention, I focused on earning their trust, listening to their struggles, and making each lesson practical.
Through their homework, my students gradually shared their real lives. One quiet young man surprised us with an insightful (有见地的) discussion on a complex fantasy novel. A devoted husband took careful notes home to his sick wife. A working mother grieving the loss of her son never missed a single class even during winter snowstorms. With patience and understanding, I watched them embrace writing not just as a task, but as a bridge for connection.
At the end of the term, my student evaluations (评价) arrived. While a few noted my occasional late arrivals after a long commute, one statement received the highest score across the board: I feel that this instructor cares about me. Standing in that classroom, I finally understood what Mrs. Korthaus had lived by decades earlier: a teacher’s true success lies not merely in delivering textbooks, but in helping students believe they are seen, valued, and capable of growth.
24. What influenced the author most about Mrs. Korthaus in high school?
A. Her wide knowledge of literature.
B. Her patience in offering career advice.
C. Her tolerance for her students’ mistakes.
D. Her encouragement of the author’s potential.
25. Why are the three students mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To prove their academic success.
B. To show how writing healed pain.
C. To explain their job training needs.
D. To show emotional ties built by writing.
26. Which of the following would the author value most?
A. Her students got the highest grades.
B. Students felt valued and recognized.
C. Students spoke highly of her teaching.
D. She was forgiven for her poor attendance.
27. What has the author come to realize about teaching?
A. To teach is to touch a heart forever.
B. A good tree always bears good fruit.
C. Actions always speak louder than words.
D. True love never goes without strict rules.

Feeling worried? Angry? Disappointed? Research clearly shows there is something you can do — no matter where you are or what the conditions are. Take a few slow, deep breaths.
In most stressful situations, human nature in fact drives us to take deep breaths. If you’re getting ready to give a speech to a large crowd or standing at the starting line for a community running race, you may find yourself taking a deep breath without even thinking about it.
All around the world and throughout centuries, cultural traditions such as yoga (瑜伽) have drawn on our natural instincts (本能) to encourage breathing exercises as a way to achieve calm and relaxation.
Research shows that it works. A recent study showed that people who did slow breathing exercises felt less stressed and less worried than those who didn’t try the exercises. It also showed that deep breathing helped to reduce pain levels and lower blood pressure for some patients.
Now scientists want to know: What happens in our bodies when we breathe slowly and deeply? A study tries to explain this. It looks at findings from 15 different studies about how slow breathing influences the body. The researchers discovered that slow, deep breathing causes changes in the nervous system. This system controls things we don’t think about, like heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure and body heat. Studies show slow breathing increases two important health signs: Heart Rate Variability and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia. These signs show our bodies are working well.
28. What can you do to reduce stress according to paragraph 1?
A. Do some exercise. B. Practice yoga often.
C. Ask researchers for help. D. Take slow and deep breaths.
29. Why do people breathe deeply when faced with stress?
A. It’s a natural instinct. B. It’s a cultural tradition.
C. It’s a learned behavior. D. It’s a medical treatment.
30. What is the text mainly about?
A. The measurement of heart rate.
B. The causes of slow and deep breathing.
C. The cultural traditions of breathing exercises.
D. The benefits and principle of slow and deep breathing.
31. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A travel guide. B. A science magazine. C. A newspaper. D. A biology textbook.

Do you want a better memory (记忆力)? If there were an app on your phone that could improve your memory, would you try it? After all, our memory can be easily damaged by diseases, injuries, bad mental health conditions and, most particularly for all of us, aging.
Nowadays, there are a large number of apps that provide memory training. Can they help you remember to take medicine, do better on a school exam, remember the name of the person whom you met yesterday? Some scientists question whether this is possible. Undoubtedly, many of the brain training companies today boast the benefits of using their apps.
Scientists have provided proof that brain training does not benefit everyone in the same way. It is suggested that little consideration has been given to who would benefit most from those brain training apps. Will they only be those who have some forms of memory impairment (缺陷), or those eager for self-improvement even though they are already functioning very well?
To overcome these limitations, our team has started a new study aiming to find 30,000 volunteers to help us decide which form of training may be the best for individuals. Our goal is to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead of focusing on the simple question of whether brain training works, we are considering covering the whole population in a new challenge to test for whom brain training works, and under which conditions.
32. What damages our memory the most according to paragraph 1?
A. Growing old. B. Being sick.
C. Getting injured. D. Suffering from mental problems.
33. What does the underlined word “boast” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Describe. B. Show. C. Self-praise. D. Recommend.
34. What’s the scientists’ attitude toward the memory training apps?
A. Uncaring. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
35. Why does the author’s team do the study?
A. To see if brain training works.
B. To prove one-size-fits-all is best.
C. To explain why apps fail for some people.
D. To find the best training for different people.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Don’t think it’s an impossible task to pass your reading tests. Lots of people have shared their successful reading secrets here. 36
Read a passage twice before looking up an unknown word.
If you’re reading to gain new vocabulary, you should treat it as a “fill in the blanks” exercise. At first, you’ll have to read every paragraph twice. 37 The second time you read it, focus on the words you don’t know. Try and work out what each word means from the sentences before and after. If you had to guess the meaning, what would it be?
38
Whenever you are reading in English and learn a new word, don’t let it slip away! Write it down with a short definition (定义) or a little drawing. Some students like to keep a specific notebook for this — their own personal dictionaries! Several studies have shown that writing a piece of information down on paper helps you to remember it more easily.
Read out loud.
If you’re going to put time in your reading skills, you may as well get some extra practice for your speaking skills too! 39 It’s a great way to get used to speaking English too.
Divide your time into skim reading and deep reading
You should spend some of your reading time “skim-reading texts”. This way, you learn how to get a general sense of what’s going on without understanding every single word. 40 This is when you really focus on understanding everything that’s going on.
A. Write down new words.
B. Try reading some passages out loud to yourself.
C. It’s normal to forget how to read words correctly.
D. Reading resources should be a little hard for you to skim.
E. You should spend the rest of your reading time “deep-reading texts”.
F. Follow these tips to make use of your reading time as effectively as possible.
G. The first time, you’ll probably get the general idea but be confused by a few words.
