Doing sport is one of the best gifts you can give to your body and mind. Yet many students give up soon after they begin, simply because they have picked an activity that does not suit them. Choosing well at the start saves both time and energy later. The following ideas may help you find something you will still enjoy years later. 1________
Think about your character first. Some people love the excitement of a team game, while others prefer quiet practice on their own. 2________ If you feel lonely when you train alone, choose basketball or football; if you need peace and quiet, running, swimming or yoga may suit you better.
Your daily timetable matters as much as your interest. 3________ An activity that needs a partner, a court or a long journey across town will soon become a burden, while one you can fit into your daily life is far more likely to last.
Next, be honest about your present condition. Beginners often copy the training of much stronger players and end up with pain in their knees or back. 4________ Walking, light jogging and simple ball games are safe starting points for almost everyone.
It also helps to set a clear goal and keep a record of your progress. Write down how far you run or how many times you practise each week. Small, steady improvements are easier to see on paper, and they keep you going when you feel tired. A friend who checks your record once a week makes the habit stronger.
Finally, remember that the best sport is the one you actually do. 5________ Try several activities during the first month, then keep the one that makes you look forward to the next session.
A. The first step is to know yourself before you sign up for anything.
B. Your character often decides whether a team game or a single-player one suits you.
C. Ask yourself honestly how much free time you can spare every week.
D. Start slowly and increase the difficulty only when your body feels comfortable.
E. Do not be afraid to give up one activity and try another.
F. The more expensive your equipment is, the better your training will be.
G. Professional players never change the sport they chose as children.
Li Ming used to be the boy who always found an excuse to sit out PE class. In his first year at senior high he was overweight, and running two hundred metres left him breathless and ashamed. Whenever his classmates invited him to join a game, he shook his head and said he had homework to finish. His mother noticed his tired face and suggested a small change: a ten-minute walk after dinner every evening. That was easy enough, so Li Ming agreed.
The walk slowly turned into jogging. At first he could only manage a few hundred metres before he had to stop, but he kept a record on his phone and watched the numbers grow week by week. Three months later he could run three kilometres without a break. More importantly, he began to enjoy the quiet half hour alone on the school track, when the noise of the day faded and his mind grew calm.
In his second term Li Ming joined the school running club. Training with others taught him that progress is not a race: some days are fast, some days are slow, and both belong to the same journey. He also learned to eat better and to sleep earlier, because his body asked for it.
Last autumn he finished a five-kilometre race with more than two hundred other students. He was not the fastest runner that day, and he did not care. "Two years ago I could not believe I would even stand at the starting line," he told his friends. "Now I just want to keep moving."
1.Why did Li Ming refuse to join his classmates at first?
A. He was busy with his homework every afternoon.
B. He was unfit and felt ashamed of his performance.
C. He preferred reading books in the classroom.
D. He had a serious problem with his knees.
2.What was the first change Li Ming made?
A. He took a ten-minute walk after dinner every evening.
B. He joined the school running club at once.
C. He began to run three kilometres every morning.
D. He asked his PE teacher for a training plan.
3.What can we infer about Li Ming from the second paragraph?
A. He gave up jogging after the first week.
B. He recorded his progress in a notebook at school.
C. He ran faster than most of his classmates.
D. His jogging distance increased little by little.
4.What did training with the running club teach him?
A. Winning a race is the only real success.
B. Running alone is always better than running in a group.
C. Improvement comes in an uneven but natural way.
D. Speed matters more than regular practice.
5.Which of the following best describes Li Ming?
A. Proud and careless.
B. Persistent and positive.
C. Shy but lucky.
D. Talented but lazy.
(二)
Last month the school newspaper asked 1,200 students at No. 7 Senior High School to name their favourite sport. The result was no surprise to the PE teachers: basketball came first, chosen by 34 per cent of the students, followed by badminton at 26 per cent and running at 18 per cent. Volleyball, table tennis and swimming shared the rest.
Why is basketball so popular? Mr Chen, who has taught PE for twenty years, gives two reasons. First, the school has six outdoor courts and two indoor ones, so students can play even when it rains. Second, a game needs ten players, which means a whole class can take part at the same time. "You do not have to be tall or fast to enjoy it," he says. "You just need a ball and a friend."
Badminton comes second for a different reason. It is cheap, it can be played in a small space, and it is easy for beginners. Many girls say they prefer it because they can control the speed of the game themselves, and a light rain only moves the match into the corner of the playground.
The survey also asked how often students exercise. Only 41 per cent said they exercise three times a week or more, while 23 per cent said they hardly exercise at all. Most of the students in this group say they have no time because of homework.
The newspaper suggests that the school should open the gym in the evening and organise more class matches, so that every student can find a sport to love. "A survey tells us what students like," the editor wrote. "A timetable tells them when they can do it."
6.What is the survey mainly about?
A. How to train for a school basketball team.
B. The PE teachers at No. 7 Senior High School.
C. Students favourite sports and how often they exercise.
D. The cost of sports equipment for teenagers.
7.Which sport came first in the survey?
A. Basketball.
B. Badminton.
C. Running.
D. Swimming.
8.Why does Mr Chen think basketball is popular?
A. It is the cheapest sport for students.
B. It can only be played by tall students.
C. It is part of every PE exam at school.
D. There are enough courts and many can join at once.
9.What can we learn about badminton from the passage?
A. It needs a large and expensive field.
B. Beginners find it easy to start.
C. It is more popular than basketball.
D. It is mostly chosen by boys.
10.What does the school newspaper suggest?
A. Building more indoor basketball courts.
B. Asking students to exercise every morning.
C. Opening the gym in the evening and holding more class matches.
D. Buying better equipment for the school team.

2.A:第一段末尾写到母亲建议“a ten-minute walk after dinner every evening”,他觉得容易便答应了,这是他一系列改变中最早的一步,故选 A。
A 项与 kept a record 矛盾,B 项的 notebook 与文中的 phone 不符,C 项文中无依据。
4.C:第三段明确说“progress is not a race: some days are fast, some days are slow”,说明进步有快有慢、并不均衡,这是很自然的过程,故选 C。
5.B:全文写他从逃避体育课,到坚持记录、加入俱乐部、完成五公里比赛,并说“Now I just want to keep moving”,可见他坚持不懈且心态积极,故选 B。
7.A:第一段明确指出“basketball came first, chosen by 34 per cent of the students”,比例高于羽毛球和跑步,故选 A。
B 项与文中“You do not have to be tall or fast to enjoy it”正好相反。
10.C:最后一段说报纸建议学校“should open the gym in the evening and organise more class matches”,让每个学生都能找到自己热爱的运动,故选 C。
