A survey on exercise habits can be a useful class project, but it easily goes wrong when nobody plans it. The first step is to decide exactly what you want to find out. Do you hope to learn how often students play sport, or why they stop doing it? A clear aim will guide every question that follows. 1________
Next comes the questionnaire itself. Keep it short, use plain language and never ask two things in one question. 2________ A question like "How often do you exercise?" needs fixed answers such as "every day", "twice a week" or "hardly ever", so that everybody replies in the same way.
Choosing the people to ask matters just as much. Thirty classmates may be quick to reach, but their answers will not speak for the whole school. 3________ Picking names at random from different grades usually gives a fairer picture, even though it takes a little more time and patience.
When the questionnaires are handed out, patience is needed. Some students hurry through the form, while others forget to finish it. 4________ A gentle reminder and a clear closing date often work better than pressure, because honest answers are worth far more than quick ones.
The last stage is to turn the answers into something readable. Count them carefully, put them into a simple chart and look for the patterns behind the figures. 5________ Finally, write a short report with two or three practical suggestions, since a survey that changes nothing is only a pile of numbers.
A. It also helps to offer a few fixed answers instead of asking people to write freely.
B. Explain why their replies matter and allow everybody enough time to finish quietly.
C. Without such an aim, the questions pull in different directions and the answers are hard to use.
D. A good questionnaire should be long enough to cover every idea that comes to mind.
E. Try to include students of different grades, interests and levels of fitness.
F. After that, the teacher should decide which answers are correct and cross out the rest.
G. Simple charts and short notes often show at a glance what long lists of figures hide.
Last term, the School Sports Club asked 800 students from Senior 1 and Senior 2 to answer twelve questions about their weekly exercise habits. Their answers were checked and then turned into simple charts.
The most encouraging finding was that 92% of them took some exercise during the week. Only 38%, however, reached the level of at least an hour a day. Basketball came first among boys, while running and rope skipping were more popular among girls.
The reason for stopping was almost the same for everyone: no time. Over 60% said homework and extra classes left little room for sport, and about a quarter complained that their school offered too little space for team games. Interestingly, those who lived near the school were no more active than those who travelled a long way; they simply spent the saved minutes on their phones.
The club also noticed a small but welcome change. In the one school that had introduced ten-minute exercise during the class break, the number of sleepy students in morning lessons fell from 51% to 29% within a term. As one member put it in the final report, young people do not dislike sport; what many of them lack is time, space and a bit of encouragement.

(二)
When Ms Liu's class was given the task of making a fitness handbook for new students, nobody in Zoe's group had tried anything like it. Their first meeting ended in argument, with everyone suggesting a different cover picture. It was only when they wrote down the questions they wanted to answer that the work began to move.
They finally agreed on three questions: what stops students from exercising, what help they need, and what a realistic weekly plan looks like. A short questionnaire went out to 200 students, and 174 replies came back. To their surprise, the biggest difficulty was neither laziness nor cost, but the fear of being laughed at in front of others, especially in team games.
Then the group divided the handbook into four parts: simple warm-up activities, ten-minute classroom exercises, weekend plans and a record sheet. Zoe drew the pictures, Daniel checked every movement with the PE teacher, and Meilin typed the text and printed the copies. Their PE teacher read the final draft and asked for two small corrections.
On the first day of the new term, 300 copies were handed out. Several weeks later, some first-year students stopped the group in the playground to say that the ten-minute exercises had become part of every school day for them. The members learned something too: a plan drawn from real answers works far better than one written at a desk.

9.What is the writer's opinion of the finished handbook?
A. It was far too expensive to print.
B. It should never be given to new students.
C. It succeeded because it grew out of real answers.
D. It should have been written by teachers only.
10.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. How to Win Every Sports Match

1.C:本段反复强调先要弄清目的(decide exactly what you want to find out / A clear aim),C 项以 Without such an aim 从反面承接首段的 aim,说明缺少目标时问题会各说各话、答案难以利用,逻辑衔接最紧密,故选 C。
2.A:本段讲问卷要简短、语言要平实,且不能一题两问;A 项中的 offer a few fixed answers 与空后的 “every day”“twice a week” 等选项直接呼应,instead of asking people to write freely 也与“给出固定选项”的建议一致,故选 A。
3.E:空前提到只问同班三十人不能代表全校,E 项 “students of different grades, interests and levels of fitness” 给出解决办法,并与空后 Picking names at random from different grades 自然衔接,故选 E。
A gentle reminder ... work better than pressure 相呼应,故选 B。
5.G:本段讲把答案整理成可读的形式,G 项 “Simple charts and short notes often show at a glance ...” 承接上文的 put them into a simple chart,又与段末 only a pile of numbers 形成对照,故选 G;D 项主张问卷越长越好,与 Keep it short 相悖;F 项主张由老师删改答案,与诚实统计的要求不符,故排除。
2.C:第二段说 “Only 38%, however, reached the level of at least an hour a day”,题干中 exercised at least an hour a day 与此同义,故选 C;92% 是本段另一个数据,指“一周运动过”的比例,不可混为一谈。
3.B:第二段末句说 “Basketball came first among boys, while running and rope skipping were more popular among girls”,即女生更喜欢跑步和跳绳,B 项与此一致;A 项把男生的情况安到女生身上,故选 B。
4.A:第三段说 “Over 60% said homework and extra classes left little room for sport”,可见学业负担挤占了运动时间,A 项推断正确;B 项与 were no more active than those who travelled a long way 相反,C、D 两项文中无依据,故选 A。
5.A:末段先讲课间十分钟锻炼让上午犯困人数从 51% 降到 29%,再以 “what many of them lack is time, space and a bit of encouragement” 收束,意在说明小小的改变就能见效,A 项概括了段落写作目的;B 项与 young people do not dislike sport 相反,故选 A。
6.B:第一段末句说 “It was only when they wrote down the questions they wanted to answer that the work began to move”,其中 only when 强调条件,与题干 What made the work ... begin to move 完全对应,故选 B;A 项是第一次讨论陷入争论的原因,故不选。
7.D:第二段明确说 “the biggest difficulty was neither laziness nor cost, but the fear of being laughed at in front of others”,D 项正是原文内容;A、B 两项被 neither ... nor 否定,C 项文中未提及,故选 D。
8.A:第三段讲 Zoe 画图、Daniel 与体育老师核对动作、Meilin 打字印刷,可见分工明确,A 项 “shared the work out among themselves” 概括准确;B 项 entirely 与事实不符,D 项与第一段的首次争论混淆,故选 A。
9.C:末段说这本手册受到新生欢迎,并总结 “a plan drawn from real answers works far better than one written at a desk”,C 项与此一致,表达了作者的肯定态度;A、D 两项文中无依据,B 项与事实相反,故选 C。
