Long before films could talk, cinema was already a popular form of entertainment. In the late nineteenth century, inventors in several countries were racing to build machines that could capture and show moving pictures. Their early works lasted only a minute or two and were shown in small rooms or at fairgrounds. There was no soundtrack at all, so the meaning of a story had to be carried by the actors' faces, gestures and body language. 1________
The arrival of recorded sound in the late 1920s changed everything. 2________ The first talking films astonished audiences, who could suddenly hear the actors' voices, footsteps and music. Cinemas had to buy and install new equipment, and a number of actors who had expressive faces but unsuitable voices found themselves out of work almost overnight.
3________ Technicians had to hide microphones in flowers or under tables, because early recording machines were large and clumsy. Cameras were locked inside soundproof boxes so that their noise would not be picked up. Gradually, better methods were developed and directors won back the freedom to move the camera again.
Colour was the next great step. 4________ Companies competed to produce the most natural colours, and musicals and historical epics were made especially to show them off. Yet for a long time colour film remained expensive, so many directors still chose black and white because it suited a serious or realistic story better.
In the last thirty years digital methods have transformed cinema once more. Films can now be shot with small cameras, edited on computers and sent to cinemas as files instead of heavy reels. 5________ Audiences can also watch the same film on a phone, a laptop or a very large screen, and the way we enjoy stories continues to change.
A. Making a talking film was far more difficult than making a silent one.
B. Early colour systems were costly and needed special cameras and lighting.
C. Instead, filmmakers printed a few words on a card and showed it between scenes.
D. This change also created new jobs for sound engineers and musicians.
E. It allowed stories to be told through voices, music and sound effects.
F. Colour was first added by hand to individual frames.
G. It has made production cheaper and opened the door to new visual effects.
Mr Lin worked as a projectionist for more than thirty years. When he started in the 1980s, the town cinema was the brightest place on the street. Every evening people queued for tickets and the hall was full. Up in the small room above the seats, he fed long reels of film through a heavy projector. He had to watch the screen closely, because a film arrived in several parts and he had to move from one reel to the next at exactly the right moment. 'If you were two seconds late,' he says, 'the picture stopped and the audience shouted.'
The work was hard, but he loved it. He knew almost every film by heart and could tell that a scene was coming simply by listening to the sound. In those days the print arrived in metal boxes, and he checked it before each show, because a small scratch could leave a line across the picture for weeks.
Things began to change about fifteen years ago. The cinema bought a digital system, and the heavy reels disappeared. A film now arrives as a small hard drive or as a file sent over the internet. Mr Lin no longer has to run up and down the stairs, but he also no longer feels needed. 'A machine does everything now,' he says. 'It never makes a mistake, so nobody notices when it works well.'
The cinema closed last winter and will be turned into a supermarket. On its last day Mr Lin was allowed to keep the old projector. He has cleaned it and placed it in his living room. Sometimes his grandson asks him to explain how it works, and he is happy to do so. 'It is only a machine,' he says, 'but it carried a lot of memories.'

(二)
Digital technology has changed almost every step of film-making. Twenty years ago a scene was recorded on heavy rolls of film that cost a great deal of money. Today many directors use digital cameras that store pictures on small cards. Because nothing is wasted, a young team can shoot far more scenes than before, and it is possible to watch the result immediately instead of waiting days for the film to be developed.
Editing has changed even more. In the past editors cut and joined pieces of film by hand. Now the material is loaded into a computer, where scenes can be moved, shortened or coloured with a few clicks. Mistakes that once could not be repaired can now be fixed, and sounds can be recorded again in a quiet studio long after the actors have gone home.
The way films reach audiences has also been transformed. A digital copy can be sent to thousands of cinemas in a few minutes, while a print of film had to be packed in boxes and driven across the country. This saves money and keeps both picture and sound in perfect condition, no matter how often the film is shown.
Yet some directors still prefer traditional film. They argue that digital pictures look too clean and that the grain of old film gives a story a special feel. Large traditional cameras are also heavy and slow, which, they say, forces a director to think carefully before shooting. For them, less freedom can sometimes produce better art.
6.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Traditional film will disappear completely in a few years.
B. Digital cameras are much cheaper than traditional ones.
C. Digital technology has changed the way films are made and shown.
D. Young directors prefer digital cameras to traditional film.
7.According to Paragraph 1, why can a young team shoot more scenes today?
A. Because digital recording wastes nothing and costs less.
B. Because actors work much faster than they did in the past.

8.What does the underlined word 'transformed' in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Recorded.
B. Prepared.
C. Repaired.
D. Changed.
9.Why do some directors still prefer traditional film?
A. It is easier to edit on a computer.
B. It gives their pictures a special quality.

2.E:空格前说“The arrival of recorded sound…changed everything(录音的出现改变了一切)”,空格后举例说观众第一次听到演员的声音、脚步声和音乐,E 项“它使故事得以通过人声、音乐和音效来讲述”中的 It 指代 recorded sound,与 voices, music 呼应,故选 E。

1.B:根据第一段“worked as a projectionist”与“fed long reels of film through a heavy projector”可知,林先生的工作是在放映室里操作放映机、把影片放映到银幕上,B 项“他操作把影片放映到银幕上的机器”与此相符,故选 B。
2.C:第二段说“the print arrived in metal boxes, and he checked it carefully before each show”,检查的对象自然是前面提到的 the print(影片拷贝),且后文“dust or a small scratch could leave a line across the picture”也说明被检查的是拷贝,故选 C。
3.A:第一段明确说“He had to watch the screen closely, because a film arrived in several parts and he had to move from one reel to the next at exactly the right moment”,即他必须在恰当的时刻更换片盘,故选 A。
4.D:第三段说数字系统让他“no longer has to run up and down the stairs”,这是便利之处;同时又说“he also no longer feels needed”“nobody notices when it works well”,可见他内心失落,D 项“他接受了它的便利,却怀念过去自己的角色”符合推断,故选 D。
7.A:第一段说过去拍摄用“heavy rolls of film that cost a great deal of money”,而现在“Because nothing is wasted, a young team can shoot far more scenes”,即数字拍摄不浪费材料、成本更低,故选 A。
9.B:第四段说这些导演认为数字画面“look too clean”,而传统胶片的颗粒感“gives a story a special feel”,即传统胶片能带来特殊的质感,B 项“它使画面具有独特的品质”与此相符,故选 B。
