A good film review does more than tell readers whether a film is good or bad. It explains why, and it helps them decide if the film is right for them. Do not worry if your first review sounds plain, because clear and honest writing is far more useful to a reader than long, difficult sentences. Here are a few steps that may make your first review much easier to write.
Watch the film carefully, and watch it only once if possible. 1________ While you are watching, write down the names of the main characters, a few lines you like and anything that surprises you. These notes will save you a lot of time later, and they help you remember details that disappear soon after you leave the cinema.
Begin your review with a short introduction. Give the title, the director and the type of the film, but never retell the whole story. 2________ Readers want to know what the film is about, not how it ends.
Then explain what you think of the film and why. Comment on the acting, the music, the camera work and the ending. 3________ For example, instead of simply writing that the film is great, you can say that a certain scene made you think of your own grandmother.
It is also honest to mention the weak points. A film may have beautiful pictures but a slow middle part, and saying so makes your review more believable. 4________
Finally, end with a clear recommendation. Tell your readers who will probably enjoy the film and give it a rating out of five stars if you like. 5________ That is the real purpose of a review.
A. Just describe the main plot in one or two sentences.
B. In this way your readers can decide whether to spend their time and money on it.
C. Take a notebook with you, because memory can be surprisingly weak.
D. Give your opinion with clear reasons and details from the film.
E. However, keep your language polite and avoid personal attacks on the actors.
F. You should also tell the readers the exact ticket price of the film.
G. A review should always be longer than two thousand words to be useful.
五、阅读理解
(一)
The Lost Violin, directed by Anna Meyer, is a quiet film about music, memory and the love between a grandfather and his granddaughter. It opened in cinemas last Friday and has already won the hearts of many young viewers.
The story is simple. Fourteen-year-old Sara finds an old violin in her grandfather's room and asks him to teach her to play it. At first the old man refuses, because the instrument reminds him of a painful past. Little by little, however, music brings the two closer, and Sara discovers a secret that her family has kept for thirty years.
What makes the film special is not its plot but its performances. Young Emily Carter, who plays Sara, gives a surprisingly natural performance, especially in the scene where she plays the violin in public for the first time. Her grandfather, played by veteran actor John Bell, says very little, yet his eyes express more than any long speech could.
The camera work is another pleasure. The director uses warm light for the scenes in the old house and cold blue for the busy streets, so the change of place feels like a change of mood. The music, of course, is excellent from beginning to end.
The film is not perfect. The middle part moves rather slowly, and one or two dialogues sound a little unnatural. Still, the touching ending makes these small problems easy to forget. Anyone who loves music, or who has ever tried to understand an older relative, will find something here. Highly recommended, four stars out of five.

(二)
Every Thursday afternoon, the members of our school film club meet in Room 302, and the last twenty minutes are always the liveliest. That is the "recommendation corner", where anyone can stand up and recommend a film to the others.
The idea came from Liu Yang, a boy in Class 5 who loves old films. Last term he noticed that many students only watched the newest films on their phones and never heard of anything made before 2010. He asked our teacher if he could spend ten minutes introducing an old film every week. Surprisingly, more than forty students came to his first talk.
The rules are simple. The speaker must prepare a three-minute talk, tell the class why the film is worth watching, and answer two questions from the audience. Nobody is allowed to show the whole film, and nobody is allowed to say that others must watch it. What people share is an opinion, not an order.
Not every recommendation is successful. Once a boy recommended a two-hour film about the history of bridges. Half of the students fell asleep and the talk had to be cut short. Since then we have learned to choose films that really interest teenagers.
The corner has changed the way we watch films. My best friend, who used to say that foreign films were boring, now keeps a notebook of the titles people recommend. Last month she recommended a Japanese animation herself, and her talk was so clear that thirty students watched it that weekend.
6.What is the "recommendation corner"?
A. A shop where students can buy cheap film tickets.
B. A time when students introduce films they like to others.
C. A competition for the best film poster in the school.
D. A lesson given by the school teacher every Thursday.
7.Why did Liu Yang start the activity?
A. He wanted to become famous in the school.
B. His teacher asked him to give a speech.
C. He hoped to sell more tickets for the cinema.
D. He found that students seldom watched older films.
8.Which rule must the speakers follow?
A. They must show the whole film to the class.
B. They must speak for at least ten minutes.
C. They must share an opinion instead of giving orders.
D. They must choose a film made after 2010.
9.Why was the talk about the history of bridges cut short?
A. The film was too long and failed to interest the students.
B. The speaker forgot to bring his notes.
C. The teacher stopped the meeting early that day.
D. Nobody in the club knew anything about bridges.
10.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. Foreign films are always better than Chinese ones.
B. The activity has made students more open to different films.
C. The club will stop recommending foreign films next term.
D. Students no longer watch films on their mobile phones.
