The two hours you enjoy on screen are usually the result of years of work by hundreds of people. 1________ Here is a simple look at how that work is organised, from the first idea to the final copy. Everything begins with an idea and a script. Writers may rewrite a story dozens of times before the producer accepts it, and even after that the changes continue during the shooting. 2________ Only when everything is ready can the real work begin. Then comes the hardest period: shooting. Actors perform in front of the camera while the crew controls light, sound and movement around them. 3________ A single minute of the finished film may take a whole day to record, and even a small mistake can force the team to begin again. When the shooting ends, the film enters the editing room. Here the editor cuts thousands of pieces of material into a clear story, adds music, balances sound and decides how fast each scene should move. 4________ It is often in this quiet room that a film finally finds its shape. The last stage adds sound and visual effects. Modern technology allows artists to build cities that have never existed, to age an actor's face or to remove a microphone from a scene. 5________ The best effects, however, are usually the ones viewers never notice, because they simply make the story feel real. After months of checking, the film is ready for its first audience. What they see looks effortless, but behind every smooth minute stand thousands of decisions, large and small, made by people whose names appear only at the very end. A. Nothing here is quick, and patience matters more than natural talent. B. Such tools have changed what directors dare to imagine. C. Most of this work happens far away from the camera and the public eye. D. A scene that feels boring in one order can become exciting in another. E. At this stage the producer must also find the money and choose the actors and places. F. Many young people dream of becoming famous actors one day. G. Tickets for the first show are usually sold out within a few hours. 五、阅读理解 (一) For thirty years, Mr Lu has worked as a prop maker for films and television plays. His job is to find or build every object an actor touches, from a broken cup to an old letter. Most viewers never notice his work, and he says that is exactly the point. He began as a carpenter in a small workshop. One day a film team came to ask for a wooden table that could be broken safely. He made one from light wood and thin glue, and the team was so pleased that they invited him to join them. That single table changed his life. Since then, he has learned to read history books, visit museums and search markets for objects that match a story. For a film set in the 1930s, he once spent two weeks looking for a lamp of the right shape. If the object is wrong, he says, the audience may not know why, but they will feel it. His most difficult task came three years ago, when a director asked for a clock that could run backwards on camera. He took the machine apart more than twenty times before he found a way. The finished clock appears in the film for only eight seconds. Now in his sixties, Mr Lu still rides to the studio every morning. Young workers often ask why he does not rest at home. He smiles and answers that every new story brings a new problem, and solving it is the pleasure he cannot give up. 1.What does Mr Lu do as a prop maker? A. He writes stories for famous directors. B. He finds or makes objects used in films. C. He repairs cameras for the film crew. D. He trains young actors before shooting. 2.How did Mr Lu begin his career in the film industry? A. He answered an advertisement in a newspaper. B. He studied prop making at a film school. C. He was introduced by a famous director. D. He made a table that a film team needed. 3.Why did Mr Lu spend two weeks looking for a lamp? A. He wanted the object to fit the period of the story. B. The director refused to pay for a new one. C. Lamps of that size were extremely expensive. D. He hoped to sell it to a museum later. 4.What does the clock mentioned in Paragraph 4 show about Mr Lu? A. He prefers simple tasks to difficult ones. B. He often argues with directors about details. C. He is willing to work hard for a very short scene. D. He is more interested in clocks than in films. 5.What is the writer's purpose in telling Mr Lu's story? A. To explain how to become a prop maker. B. To show the quiet value of behind-the-scenes workers. C. To compare old film technology with new technology. D. To encourage cinemas to show more old films. (二) When the first films were shown more than a hundred years ago, they were only a few minutes long and had no sound at all. Yet audiences were amazed. Since then, the technology behind the moving image has developed faster than almost anyone expected. This development has changed not only what we see but also what directors dare to imagine. In the early days, effects were made by hand. A storm could be created with a large tank of water, and a burning city was often a small model filmed from a low angle. Everything had to be built before the shooting started, and mistakes could not be corrected once a scene was recorded. The arrival of computers changed all this. From the 1970s onwards, artists began to draw images directly into the film. By the 1990s, whole animals and huge crowds could be created inside a machine, and directors were able to show events that had never happened in the real world. Today the line between the real and the imaginary has almost disappeared. An actor can stand in an empty room and appear to cross a distant planet. Cameras record the actor's movements, and software turns those movements into a completely different world around him. However, technology has not solved every problem. Some viewers complain that modern films depend too heavily on effects and forget the story. Many directors now say the same thing in a different way: the most powerful effects are still the ones that serve the characters and the plot. In that sense, the tools have changed, but the heart of a good film has not. 6.How were special effects created in the early days of film? A. With the help of computer software. B. By asking actors to imagine the scene. C. By hand, using models and simple tools. D. Through cameras placed inside real storms. 7.What is the text mainly about? A. The development of film effects technology. B. The life of an early film director. C. The way actors are trained today. D. The cost of making a modern film. 8.What did computers make possible for directors? A. Filming without any actors at all. B. Showing events that never happened in real life. C. Recording sound together with the image. D. Making films much cheaper and much shorter. 9.What does the writer mean by saying the line between the real and the imaginary has almost disappeared? A. Viewers no longer care whether a story is true. B. Modern cameras have become much lighter than before. C. Actors prefer working in empty rooms. D. Viewers can hardly tell what is real in a film. 10.What do many directors think about modern effects? A. They are too expensive for most film companies. B. They should serve the story rather than replace it. C. They will soon take the place of real actors. D. They work better in comedies than in other types. 6.“努力”,不定冠词 a 与形容词 huge 后需接单数名词;effort 意为“努力”,常用搭配有 make an effort,注意拼写为 ef-fort,故填 effort。 7.“方法”,形容词性物主代词 his 与形容词 new 后接名词;approach 意为“方法、途径”,后常接介词 to,如 an approach to teaching,故填 approach。 3.shoot 为动词“拍摄”,加 -ing 构成动名词 shooting,意为“拍摄(工作)”,如 the shooting of a scene(一个镜头的拍摄);注意 shoot 的过去分词为 shot。 4.create 为动词“创造”,去掉词尾不发音的 e 再加 -ion 构成名词 creation,意为“创造、作品”,如 the creation of a new world(一个新世界的创造)。 四、七选五 1.C:第一段说银幕上两小时的享受通常是数百人多年工作的成果,C 项“Most of this work happens far away from the camera and the public eye”承接 hundreds of people,说明这些劳动不为观众所见,并自然引出下文“看看这些工作是如何组织的”,故选 C。 5.B:第五段讲音效与视觉特效阶段,说现代技术可以建造不存在的城市、改变演员的容貌或抹去画面中的麦克风,B 项“Such tools have changed what directors dare to imagine”承接 Modern technology,故选 B。 五、阅读理解 1.B:第一段说 “His job is to find or build every object an actor touches”,即寻找或制作演员会接触到的每件物品,故选 B。 3.A:第三段说 “For a film set in the 1930s, he once spent two weeks looking for a lamp of the right shape”,故事背景设在二十世纪三十年代,他找灯是为了让道具与故事所处年代相符,故选 A。 6.C:第二段首句说 “In the early days, effects were made by hand”,随后以水箱造风暴、低角度拍摄城市模型为例,说明早期特效靠手工与模型完成,故选 C。 8.B:第三段末句说 “directors were able to show events that had never happened in the real world”,即计算机让导演得以呈现现实中从未发生的事,故选 B。 10.B:末段说 “the most powerful effects are still the ones that serve the characters and the plot”,并批评过于依赖特效而忘记故事的做法,可见导演们认为特效应为故事服务,故选 B。
