The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each.
Requirements for completion:
•One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
•18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
•Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings

It was a September day, and as usual, the halls of Pine High School were filled with excitement. Today was the first day of high school for a freshman, Jamie. Jamie had always been a bit of a shy kid, but she had always loved her studies. She made up her mind to make the most of her high school years, but she knew that it wouldn’t be easy.
As she walked down the hallways, Jamie couldn’t help but feel worried. The older students seemed so confident, while she felt small and unimportant. But Jamie was determined to succeed, no matter what challenges came her way.
It wasn’t long before Jamie was faced with a challenge. In her first week of school, she was assigned a project that required a lot of research and planning. Jamie tried her best, but she soon realized that she was in over her head. As she struggled to complete the project, Jamie began to doubt herself. She wondered if she was cut out for high school. But then, something great happened.
Jamie’s classmates began to notice how hard she was working and they started to offer her help and support. They gave her advice on how to manage her time better, and they shared their tips for getting through assignments. With their help, Jamie was able to complete the project on time and with great success.
From that day on, Jamie realized that high school was not a challenge to be faced alone. And as she grew more confident in herself and her abilities, she knew that she was destined (注定) for great things.
24.What can we know about Jamie on the first day of high school?
A.She was no longer shy as usual. B.She was worried but determined.
C.She was filled with confidence. D.She lost heart and was disappointed.
25.What does the phrase “in over her head” in Para. 3 mean?
A.Very confident. B.Deeply focused.
C.Nearly successful. D.Unable to deal with.
26.What did Jamie’s classmates do after noticing how busy she was?
A.They laughed at her. B.They showed off their success.
C.They did her homework for her. D.They volunteered to give her a hand.
27.What lesson can we learn from Jamie’s story?
A.Every dog has his day. B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Two heads are better than one. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might affect (影响) the health of their children.
A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long-term absence of a parent had more emotional (情绪的) or behavioral problems than those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research that found teenagers were likely to feel anxious, or even annoyed when they often returned to an empty and quiet house after school so that they even had no interest in playing games.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant, which means keeping their company in silence.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close and their methods of company won my likes. In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base (基地) from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents, we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
28.What did the researchers try to find out about the 3,000 students?
A.How many of them lived without parents. B.How parents’ absence influenced them.
C.What jobs their parents liked doing. D.Whether parents helped do housework.
29.What might be the outcome for the kids with parents’ long-term absence?
A.Being more responsible. B.Getting used to quietness.
C.Having terrible feelings. D.Being addicted to playing games.
30.Who can be called “potted plant” parents?
A.Those giving their kids much freedom. B.Those asking their kids to follow rules.
C.Those always accompanying their kids. D.Those silently staying close to their kids.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards his friends’ ways of accompanying their kids?
A.Supportive. B.Unacceptable. C.Doubtful. D.Worried.
D
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past, the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be conversant with technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days we teenagers are attracted to social networking sites because we can choose who we have around us; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (侵犯) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand, we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it seriously if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to show their independence.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
32.What does the underlined word “conversant” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A.Familiar. B.Careful. C.Patient. D.Busy.
33.What might be the reason for teens to refuse their parents’ friend request?
A.They have nothing to hide.
B.Their privacy cannot be ensured.
C.They don’t want to teach their parents.
D.They can’t choose friends around them.
34.Why is the survey mentioned in the passage?
A.To warn parents. B.To blame parents.
C.To challenge parents. D.To comfort parents.
35.What is most likely to be talked about next?
A.How to bridge the generation gap.
B.How to make friends on social networks.
C.How to explain the refusal to parents.
D.How to use the social networking sites wisely.
Why do some people seem able to build strong connections with others, while others find their conversations quickly fall into silence or misunderstanding? 36 However, true communication is not simply the exchange of words.
A conversation often fails not because people cannot talk, but because they are not truly listening. Although two people may appear to discuss the same subject, they may actually have different purposes. One may hope to find a solution, while the other may simply need emotional support. 37
So what makes communication successful? 38 Effective communicators do not just hear words; instead, they pay attention to the emotions and ideas behind them. By asking meaningful questions and showing genuine interest, they encourage others to share more openly. In addition, small signals, including changes in voice, facial expressions, or pauses, can provide valuable information about what people truly feel. These clues deserve close observation, yet they frequently slip by unnoticed in casual chats.
39 Sharing personal thoughts and feelings in an appropriate way can help build trust, because people are more likely to open up when they feel respected and understood. However, effective communication does not mean saying everything but means finding a balance between honesty and consideration.
Ultimately, becoming a good communicator is not about winning debates or finding perfect words. 40 With patience and sincere attention, communication can become a bridge that connects hearts, strengthens relationships, and helps us build a more connected world.
A.One essential skill is learning to listen actively.
B.Such details should be ignored during ordinary conversations.
C.It depends mainly on having enough knowledge and experience.
D.It is about making people feel heard, respected, and understood.
E.Another important part of communication is the ability to express oneself honestly.
F.Many believe good communication consists of clear delivery and powerful idea expression.
G.When the difference is ignored, even well-intended words create distance instead of connection.

The day Leo transferred to our high school was unremarkable, except for the silence that followed his introduction. “This is Leo. His family just moved here from overseas. Please make him feel welcome,” Mrs. Davis, our English teacher, said with an encouraging smile. Leo murmured a quiet “hello,” his accent thick and unfamiliar, and quickly took the empty seat at the back of the class. From that day on, he became a ghost (幽灵) in the hallway — present but unseen.
The language barrier was like a wall. During discussions, when called upon, Leo would struggle to find the right words, his face flushing with frustration. Whispers and suppressed (强忍住的) giggles (咯咯笑) from a few classmates, especially from Mark and his friends, often followed his attempts. I saw the embarrassment in his eyes, a silent beg to be left alone. I wanted to say something to offer help, but I feared being associated with the “outsider” and becoming a target myself, so I remained a silent observer, with my sympathy locked away.
One day, our English teacher gave us a pairwork project. We needed to prepare a short play together. When hearing I was paired with Leo, I felt a little worried. I saw Leo sitting in the corner, looking lonely and nervous, as if he would be ignored again. Seeing the worry on his face, I remembered my own feeling when I first joined a new club. I knew it was time to be brave.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

W: No, I’ve been killing time mainly by surfing the internet. Sometimes I watch TV or take a walk.
M: Did you hear that the government is going to turn the city square into an amusement park?
W: Great! That big ugly thing will be gone soon.
M: You mean the square?
W: Yes, I really don’t like it.
M: But I think the square is far better than an amusement park. It is a symbol of our city and is a nice place to go for a walk.
W: I don’t know whether that huge boring thing can be a symbol of our city.
M: But opening an amusement park means we will no longer have any peace and quiet.
W: I don’t think so. To me it can be entertaining and more importantly the amusement park means employment.
M: So what?
W: It is sure good for the development of our city.

Good morning, everyone. Welcome to your first weekend painting class. My name is Kevin, and I will be your teacher for the next 12 weeks. I know you are from all walks of life, and for most of you, this is your first time painting, or even your first time doing anything artistic. Don’t worry, this course is designed to teach you the basics of drawing. In the first two weeks, you will get familiar with some very important drawing techniques, as well as understand how to use the equipment. On week three, I will start giving you weekly homework, so you can improve outside of these classes. It’s entirely your choice to complete the homework or not. It is not a course requirement, but obviously, it will really help you progress. After week eight, you have to submit a final piece of work. This artwork will require a lot of experimentation.

根据第二段“As she walked down the hallways, Jamie couldn't help but feel worried. The older students seemed so confident, while she felt small and unimportant. But Jamie was determined to succeed, no matter what challenges came her way. (当Jamie走过走廊时,她忍不住感到担忧。高年级学生看起来很自信,而她却觉得自己渺小且不重要。但Jamie决心要成功,无论遇到什么挑战。)”可知,Jamie在高中第一天既担忧又坚定。
25.词句猜测题。根据第三段“Jamie tried her best, but she soon realized that she was in over her head. As she struggled to complete the project, Jamie began to doubt herself. (Jamie尽力了,但她很快意识到自己in over her head。当她努力完成项目时,Jamie开始怀疑自己。)”可知,她努力尝试却开始自我怀疑,说明她发现自己无法应对这个项目。所以短语“in over her head”意为“无法应对、力不从心”。
根据第四段“Jamie's classmates began to notice how hard she was working and they started to offer her help and support. They gave her advice on how to manage her time better, and they shared their tips for getting through assignments.
C.Doubtful. D.Worried.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.D 31.A
根据第一段“The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might affect (影响) the health of their children.(研究人员想知道这些“飞进飞出”父母的工作会如何影响他们孩子的健康)”可知,研究人员试图找出父母的缺席对孩子造成的影响。
根据第二段“A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long-term absence of a parent had more emotional (情绪的) or behavioral problems than those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research that found teenagers were likely to feel anxious, or even annoyed when they often returned to an empty and quiet house after school so that they even had no interest in playing games.(与那些父母工作时间较传统的青少年相比,经历父母长期缺席的青少年中有更高比例的人有更多情绪或行为问题。这支持了早期的研究结论:当青少年放学后经常回到一个空旷安静的家里,很容易感到焦虑甚至烦躁,以至于连玩游戏都提不起兴趣)”可知,父母长期缺席会导致孩子产生糟糕的情绪。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant, which means keeping their company in silence.(研究结果还表明,父母不必总是待在家里,但在某些时候待在家里会有帮助。对青少年来说,父母最好的陪伴有时就像盆栽植物,这意味着默默陪伴他们)”可知,“盆栽植物”式的父母指的是那些安静地待在孩子身边、默默陪伴他们的父母。
31.推理判断题。根据第四段“Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close and their methods of company won my likes.(许多青少年的父母都知道这是真的,他们会想方设法做到在场陪伴却不主动开启交谈。我的一个朋友每天晚上都在客厅里静静地做家务,她的孩子们在那里看电视。他们享受彼此的陪伴而不需要交谈。另一个朋友通常会接受女儿的邀请,在她坐着做作业的时候在附近工作或读书。也许,至少对一些家庭来说,这是青少年和他们的父母保持亲密的最好方式,他们的陪伴方式赢得了我的喜爱)”可知,作者对朋友们陪伴孩子的方式是非常赞同和支持的。

【答案】32.A 33.B 34.D 35.C
根据第二段“In the past, the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be conversant with technology. (过去,代沟还包括技术差距,孩子们掌握着最新的科技,而父母则被抛在后面,他们满足于继续过着以往的生活,因为并不需要conversant 技术。)”可知,父母满足于以往的生活,认为自己不需要熟悉、了解科技。所以conversant意为“熟悉的”,与familiar意思相近。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段“there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don't get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. (我们对隐私有一定的控制权,这是现实生活中得不到的。有时当我们必须接受父母或家庭成员的“好友”请求时,我们会觉得隐私被侵犯了。)”可知,青少年拒绝父母好友请求的原因是他们的隐私无法得到保障。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段“A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it seriously if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent's friend request, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to show their independence.” (一项最近的调查建议,如果孩子忽略了父母的请求,父母不应该太当回事:“当青少年忽略父母的好友请求时,并不一定意味着他们在隐瞒什么,而可能意味着这是他们生活中想要展示独立性的一部分。”)”可知,提到这项调查是为了安慰父母,让父母不要过度担心。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list. (也许当你选择不把父母添加到好友列表时,与父母交谈并给出解释会有助于减轻打击。)”可知,文章接下来最可能谈论的是如何向父母解释拒绝添加好友的原因。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】36.F 37.G 38.A 39.E 40.D
根据上文“Why do some people seem able to build strong connections with others, while others find their conversations quickly fall into silence or misunderstanding?(为什么有些人似乎能够与他人建立深厚的关系,而另一些人却很快陷入沉默或误解?)”
37.根据上文“A conversation often fails not because people cannot talk, but because they are not truly listening. Although two people may appear to discuss the same subject, they may actually have different purposes. One may hope to find a solution, while the other may simply need emotional support.(一场对话之所以失败,往往并非因为人们无法交谈,而是因为他们没有真正倾听。尽管两个人看似在讨论同一个话题,但实际上目的可能截然不同:一个人或许希望找到解决方案,而另一个人可能只是需要情感上的支持)”可知,上文提到交谈双方看似讨论同一话题,实际沟通目的并不相同,一方寻求解决方案,另一方只需要情感慰藉。G项“当差异被忽视时,即使是一些善意的话语也会制造距离,而非建立联系”点明忽视这种差异会带来的负面沟通后果,承接上文现象。
38.根据上文“So what makes communication successful?(那么,什么能让沟通成功呢?)”以及后文“Effective communicators do not just hear words; instead, they pay attention to the emotions and ideas behind them. By asking meaningful questions and showing genuine interest, they encourage others to share more openly. In addition, small signals, including changes in voice, facial expressions, or pauses, can provide valuable information about what people truly feel. These clues deserve close observation, yet they frequently slip by unnoticed in casual chats.(有效的沟通者不仅听懂言辞,更关注其背后的情绪和想法。
39.根据后文“Sharing personal thoughts and feelings in an appropriate way can help build trust, because people are more likely to open up when they feel respected and understood. However, effective communication does not mean saying everything but means finding a balance between honesty and consideration.(以适当的方式分享个人的想法和感受有助于建立信任,因为当人们感到被尊重和理解时,更愿意敞开心扉。然而,有效的沟通并不意味着说尽所有话,而是要在诚实与体贴之间找到平衡)”可知,本段讲述恰当分享个人想法、在坦诚与体谅之间寻求平衡。E项“沟通的另一个重要方面是能够真诚地表达自己”引出真诚表达自我这一沟通要素,开启本段话题,与上文倾听形成并列逻辑。
40.根据上文“Ultimately, becoming a good communicator is not about winning debates or finding perfect words.(最终,成为一名优秀的沟通者,并不在于赢得争论或找到完美的措辞)”以及后文“With patience and sincere attention, communication can become a bridge that connects hearts, strengthens relationships, and helps us build a more connected world.(以耐心和真诚的倾听,沟通可以成为连接心灵的桥梁,增进关系,并帮助我们构建一个更加紧密相连的世界)”可知,上文使用“not about……”

56.about 57.easier 58.is called 59.finding 60.to know 61.yourself 62.included 63.which 64.the 65.importantly
此处为状语从句的省略结构,完整的从句为when you are finding friends on the Internet,省略和主句一直的主语you和be动词are,保留现在分词finding。

When senior high school began, the biggest challenge I faced was the heavy academic load, especially in maths. I often struggled to finish my exercises on time and felt anxious about falling behind.
To deal with this, I made a detailed study plan. Instead of staying up late, I previewed lessons before class, asked my teacher for help whenever I got stuck, and joined a study group where we discussed difficult problems together. Gradually, I gained confidence and improved my grades.
This experience taught me that challenges are not barriers but chances to grow. With determination and the right methods, we can turn pressure into motivation and become a better version of ourselves.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Walking to Leo, I smiled and suggested we start the project. At first, he seemed surprised, but then a glimmer of hope flickered in his eyes. We sat down together and began to discuss the play. Leo’s ideas were creative and unique, but he still had trouble expressing himself clearly. I listened patiently, helping him find the right words and explaining the meanings of some difficult expressions. As we worked together, I found myself enjoying his company. We spent many afternoons practicing the play, and gradually, Leo’s confidence grew.
The day for our performance finally came, and we stood in front of the class. My heart was pounding with nervousness, but Leo looked calm and determined. As we started acting, I was amazed by how well Leo did. His lines were delivered with confidence, and his expressions were vivid. The class was completely silent, watching our performance intently. When we finished, the classroom erupted into thunderous applause. Leo and I looked at each other and smiled, knowing we had overcome the language barrier and won the respect of our classmates. From that day on, Leo was no longer a ghost in the hallway. He became my good friend, and we helped each other grow and learn.
