Four best places to go on holiday
Where are the world’s greatest places to go on holiday to relieve stress? Here are four places that may inspire you to start searching for flights immediately.
Grindavik, Iceland
Grindavik is a sleepy former fishing village just 20 minutes from the airport and offers an easy way to get to many of Iceland’s top sites. Most importantly, it’s home to the Blue Lagoon, a natural hot spring with unique minerals and algae (藻类) not found anywhere else on Earth. Research stated that the Blue Lagoon’s waters are known to improve skin health. The Blue Lagoon’s water also allows you to float weightlessly, which helps to reduce stress, improve energy levels and general wellbeing.
Helsinki, Finland
Around 75% of Finland is covered by forests, and there are almost 200,000 lakes. The country’s chance to visit various natural environments improves wellbeing in many ways. For instance, a 2023 study led by researchers from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare even found that Helsinki’s rich green and blue spaces reduced people’s use of medicine for depression, anxiety and blood pressure.
Las Catalinas, Costa Rica
The small ocean side town of Las Catalinas improve wellness in special ways. Las Catalinas is entirely car-free — you get around on foot or by bike — which encourages a slower pace of life, more time in nature, and a stronger sense of local community. Las Catalinas is also a great jumping-off point to explore the Nicoya Peninsula, another of the world's five Blue Zones (where locals are twice as likely than Americans to live to age 100!).
Sedona, Arizona
With its sandstone cliffs (悬崖), year-round blue skies, and different ted-green views, Sedona is an ideal place for anyone looking to get back to nature. It’s also one of only 36 certified (认证的) Dark Sky communities in the world, offering opportunities to observe magical Milky Way stars. Research has shown that light pollution is related to increases in stress, mood disorders, and physical health problems — while dark skies promote relaxation and sound sleep.
21.What can we learn about the Blue Lagoon in Grindavik, Iceland?
A.It has been proved to cure skin diseases.
B.It is located in the capital city of Iceland.
C.It is a hot pot with special minerals and algae.
D.It helps reduce stress and lower blood pressure.
22.What do the four places have in common?
A.They are beneficial to people’s health.
B.They are famous for activities of observing stars.
C.They are covered by forests and red-green views.
D.They offer unusual opportunities for cultural experiences.
23.Where is the passage most likely taken from?
A.A scientific journal. B.A travel magazine.
C.A history book. D.A geography textbook.

Last month Alaska photographer Mark Kelley was named the winning photographer in the 2022 portfolio (照片集) type featured in the National Wildlife magazine photo contest. Kelley’s winning portfolio featured 10 photos taken over the past 13 years.
“It’s a real honor,” Kelley says. “I was blown away. My goal has always been to share Alaska one image at a time, but now 10 of my images did just that. I think for a wildlife photographer it’s the world’s highest praise.”
Although he’s originally from Buffalo, New York, Kelley said he considers himself a “Southeast guy”. He always thought his love for photography growing up was just a hobby, not something he could turn into a career. That changed when he began taking photography classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. After graduating, Kelley was able to successfully secure a photography job in Juneau, and after moving to the capital city in 1979, he never looked back.
“I fell in love with Juneau,” he says. Kelley says he was drawn to Anan Creek and the animals surrounding it because the location is Southeast Alaska. He says each photo shows the continuous rain, towering trees and green forest that makes the region unlike other parts of Alaska. But, beyond the location, what brings the area to life is the plentiful wildlife that lives among the rainforest.
Kelley says that for each of the chosen 10 photos, thousands were taken to find those exact moments. Each visit included three to four days standing on a viewing platform in hopes of catching those special moments. Moments like that come in the blink of an eye, but when shot, it makes all those long hours of waiting worth it.
24.What do the underlined words “blown away” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A.Thankful. B.Excited. C.Anxious. D.Confused.
25.What experience was important for Kelley becoming a photographer?
A.His visit to Southeast Alaska. B.His love for award-winning photos.
C.His college learning experience. D.His meeting with plentiful wildlife.
26.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Why Anan Creek is attractive to Kelley. B.How Kelley describes his special days.
C.Why wildlife is plentiful in Anan Creek. D.How Kelley takes those winning photos.
27.What quality of Kelley is shown in the last paragraph?
A.Curious. B.Brave. C.Calm. D.Patient.
【答案】24.B 25.C 26.A 27.D
根据第一段“Last month Alaska photographer Mark Kelley was named the winning photographer in the 2022 portfolio (照片集) type featured in the National Wildlife magazine photo contest. Kelley’s winning portfolio featured 10 photos taken over the past 13 years.(上个月,阿拉斯加摄影师 Mark Kelley 被评为国家野生动物杂志摄影大赛 2022 年作品集)类型的获奖摄影师。凯利的获奖作品集收录了过去 13 年拍摄的 10 张照片。)”和第二段中““It’s a real honor,” Kelley says.(“这是一个真正的荣誉,”凯利说。)”
根据第三段中“That changed when he began taking photography classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.( 当他开始在阿拉斯加费尔班克斯大学(University of Alaska Fairbanks)学习摄影课程时,情况发生了变化。)”
根据第四段““I fell in love with Juneau,” he says. Kelley says he was drawn to Anan Creek and the animals surrounding it because the location is Southeast Alaskan. He says each photo shows the continuous rain, towering trees and green forest that makes the region unlike other parts of Alaska. But, beyond the location, what brings the area to life is the plentiful wildlife that lives among the rainforest.( “我爱上了朱诺,”他说。凯利说,他被阿南溪和周围的动物所吸引,因为它位于阿拉斯加东南部。他说,每张照片都显示了持续的降雨,参天的树木和绿色的森林,使该地区不同于阿拉斯加的其他地区。但是,除了地理位置之外,让这个地区充满生机的是生活在雨林中的大量野生动物。)”可知,第四段主要讲的是阿南溪对凯利来说具有吸引力的原因。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Each visit included three to four days standing on a viewing platform in hopes of catching those special moments. Moments like that come in the blink of an eye, but when shot, it makes all those long hours of waiting worth it.( 每次参观都要站在观景台上三到四天,希望能捕捉到这些特别的时刻。这样的时刻在眨眼之间就会出现,但当拍摄下来时,所有漫长的等待都是值得的。)”可知,凯利拍摄获奖照片的过程是漫长且艰辛的,由此可推知,他是一个有耐心的人。故选D项。
C
Superhuman artificial intelligence is already among us. Well, sort of. When it comes to playing games like chess and Go (围棋), or solving difficult scientific challenges like predicting protein (蛋白质) structures, computers are well ahead of us. But we have one superpower they aren’t close to mastering: mind reading.
Humans have a mysterious ability to reason the goals, desires and beliefs of others, a crucial (至关重要的) skill that means we can anticipate (预期) other people’s actions and the consequences of our own. Reading minds comes so easily to us, though, that we often don’t think to spell out what we want. If AIs are to become truly useful in everyday life — to cooperate effectively with us or to understand that a child might run into the road after a bouncing ball — we have to give them this gift that evolution (进化) has given us to read other people’s minds.
Psychologists (心理学家) refer to the ability to infer others’ mental state as theory of mind. In humans, this ability starts to develop at a very young age. How to reproduce the ability in machines is far from clear, though. One of the main challenges is context. For instance (例如), if someone asks whether you are going for a run and you reply “it’s raining”, they can quickly conclude that the answer is no. But this requires huge amounts of background knowledge about running, weather and human preferences.
Moreover, whether humans or AI, the theory of mind is supposed to emerge (出现) naturally from one’s own learning process. Building prior (先前的) knowledge into AI makes it reliant on our imperfect understanding of theory of mind. In addition, AI may be capable of developing approaches we could never imagine. There can be many forms of theory of mind that we don’t know about simply because we live in a human body that has certain types of senses and a certain ability to think.
Yet we might still want AI to have a more human-like form of theory of mind. Humans can clearly explain their goals and desires to each other using common language and ideas. While letting AI form the theory of mind in their learning process is likely to lead to developing more powerful AI, simply building in shared ways to represent knowledge may be more crucial for humans to trust and communicate with AI.
It is important to remember, though, that the pursuit (追求) of machines with theory of mind is about more than just building more useful robots. It is also a stepping stone on the path towards a deeper goal for AI and robotics research: building truly self-aware machines. Whether we will ever get there remains to be seen. But along the way thinking about other people and other agents (媒介), we are on the path to learning to think about ourselves.
28.What does the underlined word “them” in the second paragraph refer to?
A.Children. B.AIs. C.Minds. D.Balls.
29.Which of the following context may be the most challenging for AIs to understand?
A.When kids see their mom after hurting themselves and they cry louder.
B.When you are asked to eat spicy food and you reply “my throat will hurt”.
C.When a father tells his kid some food is good for health and the kid eats it.
D.When a teacher asks for a boy’s homework and he answers “my dog ate it”.
30.According to the author, the AIs’ ability to ________ matters most.
A.remember rich knowledge and skills B.develop various theories of mind
C.share ideas as a powerful learner D.communicate like a real human
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Mind-reading AI: the future is already here B.Human-like AI: a blessing or disaster
C.Expected: AI with its own theory of mind D.A stepping stone: thinking like an AI
根据第二段中“If AIs are to become truly useful in everyday life — to cooperate effectively with us or to understand that a child might run into the road after a bouncing ball — we have to give them this gift that evolution (进化) has given us to read other people’s minds. (如果人工智能要在日常生活中真正发挥作用——有效地与我们合作,或者理解一个孩子可能会在一个弹跳的球后跑到路上——我们必须赋予它们这种进化赋予我们的天赋,即读懂别人的思想。)”可知,前文提到“如果人工智能要在日常生活中真正发挥作用”,这里的them“它们”指代前文主语AIs“人工智能”。故选B项。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中“One of the main challenges is context. For instance (例如), if someone asks whether you are going for a run and you reply “it’s raining”, they can quickly conclude that the answer is no. But this requires huge amounts of background knowledge about running, weather and human preferences. (其中一个主要的挑战是背景。例如,如果有人问你是否要去跑步,你回答“下雨了”,他们可以很快得出结论,答案是否定的。但这需要大量关于跑步、天气和人类偏好的背景知识。)”可知,“当老师询问男孩作业时,他回答‘我的狗吃了作业’”涉及最多背景知识,“作业被狗吃了”这一回答是最常见的逃避完成作业的借口,这种语境对AI最具挑战性。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“While letting AI form the theory of mind in their learning process is likely to lead to developing more powerful AI, simply building in shared ways to represent knowledge may be more crucial for humans to trust and communicate with AI. (虽然让人工智能在学习过程中形成心智理论可能会导致开发更强大的人工智能,但简单地以共享的方式构建代表知识的方式,对于人类信任和与人工智能交流可能更为重要。)”可知,作者认为AI像真人一样交流的能力最为关键。故选D项。
31.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“we have to give them this gift that evolution (进化) has given us to read other people’s minds (我们必须赋予它们这种进化赋予我们的天赋,即读懂别人的思想)”和最后一段中“It is also a stepping stone on the path towards a deeper goal for AI and robotics research: building truly self-aware machines. (这也是通往人工智能和机器人研究更深层目标的垫脚石:制造真正具有自我意识的机器。)”可知,全文围绕“让AI发展心智理论”展开,分析了其必要性及挑战,末段指出这是“通向真正自主意识机器的垫脚石”。因此,C项“期待:拥有自主心智理论的AI”最契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选C项。
D
At a conference last week, I received an interesting piece of advice: “Assume we are wrong.” When Nosek recommended that I and other scientists assume that we were wrong, he was sharing a strategy that he’s employed in his own lab—a strategy for changing the way we respond to criticism.
Assuming that we are wrong is not so foreign to science. Many of our past scientific theories have been wrong, so surely many of our current theories will turn out to be wrong, too. That doesn’t mean we haven’t made progress, but it does suggest that there is always room for improvement.
One worry about this approach is that it could discourage scientists, because trying to be less wrong might be a less effective encouragement than the promise of being right. Another concern is that a strategy that works well with scientists might not work when it comes to communicating science with the public.
Despite these worries, I still like Nosek’s suggestion because it builds in humility (谦卑) (“There are things I do not know!”) along with a sense that we can do better (“There are things I do not know yet!”). It also builds in a sense of community—we’re all in the same boat when it comes to falling short of getting things right. Perhaps the focus on a shared goal—our goal as scientists and humans of being less wrong—can help make up for the harms in scientific motivation or communication.
I also like Nosek’s advice because it isn’t limited to science. Trying to be less wrong—rather than more right—could be a beneficial way to communicate our aims across a variety of contexts, whether it’s a daily argument or a business decision. I may be wrong about who did the dishes last night, or about what is the best investment; if I begin from the assumption that I can be wrong and I’m trying to be less wrong, any challenge may not appear so threatening.
32.What did Nosek most likely want to tell the participants at the conference?
A.Facing criticism is a very important part of life.
B.Taking a step back is a good way to face criticism.
C.Confidence is necessary for daily communication.
D.Assuming that we are wrong is foreign to scientists.
33.What does the third paragraph focus on?
A.The popularity of Nosek’s idea. B.The concerns about Nosek’s strategy.
C.Our natural response to criticism. D.The problems with scientific theories.
34.What is the author’s attitude to Nosek’s advice?
A.Approving. B.Conservative. C.Doubtful D.Uninterested.
35.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A diary entry. B.A biography. C.A news report. D.A lab’s instruction.
【答案】32.B 33.B 34.A 35.A
根据第四段第一、二句话“Despite these worries, I still like Nosek’s suggestion because it builds in humility (谦卑) (“There are things I do not know!”) along with a sense that we can do better (“There are things I do not know yet!”). It also builds in a sense of community—we’re all in the same boat when it comes to falling short of getting things right.(尽管有这些担忧,我仍然喜欢诺塞克的建议,因为它建立在谦逊(“有些事情我不知道!”)以及我们可以做得更好的感觉(“有些东西我还不知道!!”)的基础上。它还建立了一种社区意识——当谈到不能把事情做好时,我们都在同一条船上)”可知,在会上,作者觉得Nosek建议是正确的,该建议为让大家改变应对批评方式的策略,那就是“假设自己错了”。由此可推知,Nosek最想告诉与会者的是我们需要谦逊,退一步认为“可能自己错了”,这是一个面对批评的好方式。故选B。
33.主旨大意题。根据第三段“One worry about this approach is that it could discourage scientists, because trying to be less wrong might be a less effective encouragement than the promise of being right. Another concern is that a strategy that works well with scientists might not work when it comes to communicating science with the public.(对这种方法的一个担忧是,它可能会让科学家气馁,因为试图减少错误可能比承诺正确更不有效。另一个令人担忧的问题是,在与公众交流科学时,一种与科学家合作良好的策略可能不起作用)”可知,本段主要介绍了人们对于Nosek提出的策略的疑虑。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段第一句话“Despite these worries, I still like Nosek’s suggestion because it builds in humility (谦卑) (“There are things I do not know!”) along with a sense that we can do better (“There are things I do not know yet!”).(尽管有这些担忧,我仍然喜欢诺塞克的建议,因为它建立在谦逊(“有些事情我不知道!”)以及我们可以做得更好的感觉(“有些东西我还不知道!!”)的基础上)”可推知,作者是认同Nosek的做法的。故选A。
故选A。

Once upon a time, there lived a young boy named Ethan in a small village. With a passion for music, Ethan was enthusiastic about playing the guitar. Every day after school, he would rush home, grab his guitar, and lose himself in the melodies (乐曲) he created.
One summer, the village was hosting a talent show, and Ethan decided to participate. However, doubts started to flood into his mind. He began comparing himself to other talented musicians and questioning his abilities. The fear of failure began to consume him.
But Ethan’s grandfather, who had always been his biggest supporter, noticed his grandson’s inner struggle. He sat down with Ethan and shared a story from his own youth.
“When I was your age, I had a dream of becoming a painter. But I was filled with self-doubt, just like you are now. I decided to seek guidance from a wise old artist in a nearby town.
The old artist listened to my worries and offered me a challenge. He asked me to paint a picture on a large canvas in front of a crowd. Overwhelmed by the challenge, I hesitated.
The wise artist smiled and told me not to focus on what others might think. He asked me to paint from my heart and pour my soul into every stroke. The beauty lies not in perfection, but in the authenticity (真实性) of one’s creation.
Encouraged by these words, I accepted the challenge. I painted with passion, letting my emotions guide my brush. Finally, a beautiful masterpiece appeared on the canvas.”
Finishing the story, Ethan’s grandfather said, “That day, I realized that success is not defined by how perfect we are or how we compare to others. It’s about embracing our unique talents, taking risks, and expressing ourselves with passion and authenticity.”

Inspired by his grandfather’s story, Ethan decided to give the talent show his all. He practiced every day, often for hours, until his fingers were raw and his back ached. He practiced tirelessly and poured his heart into every note. When the day of the talent show arrived, Ethan took a deep breath, stepped on stage, and played his guitar like never before. The audience was captivated by his performance. Ethan’s fingers danced on the strings, creating melodies that touched their hearts. At that moment, he realized that his self-doubts had held him back, but now he was free.
Ethan didn’t pay much attention to the surroundings until he heard the applause at the end of his performance. He looked up and saw his grandfather smiling proudly at him from the audience. Ethan felt a surge of happiness and pride. His hard work and dedication had paid off, and he had finally overcome his self-doubts. He smiled, knowing that this was just the beginning of his musical journey. Ethan never forgot the lesson he learned from his grandfather’s story: With hard work and dedication, one can achieve his dreams. Beauty lies not in perfection, but in the authenticity of your creation. He regarded this lesson as a constant reminder to never give up on his passions and dreams.

A
Four best places to go on holiday
B
A.Curious. B.Brave. C.Calm. D.Patient.
You may find lots of amazing people in your school who you admire. Actually, amazing students are unique individuals who have discovered and chosen to follow a few universal truths. 36 Here are some tips that can help you.
Remain organized. Amazing students know that their time and resources are valuable.
37 They always keep test dates in mind. So they set aside time for studying and time for social lives. Similarly, you should also do all of this.
Amazing students recognize the limits of knowledge. They aren't shy to ask questions. When they need additional help, they quickly turn to their professors for help. They also find out additional resources, such as instructional videos, on topics that confuse them. 38
Accept and look for feedback(反馈)。Negative(负面的)comments are hard to hear and easy to ignore. Amazing students, however, aren't defeated by negative comments. 39 They use negative comments to improve their academic performance. So you should also read through your teacher's comments on papers, tests and exams, and carry out the suggested changes in your future learning.
40 Amazing students are curious about the world around them. They often pay much attention to world cultures and social events. In an effort to increase your knowledge, allow your natural curiosity to lead you to increase new knowledge and equip you with new skills.
A.Learn from those around you.
B.Stay curious and keep learning.
C.What makes an amazing person?
D.Do you want to be amazing at school?
E.Thus, to be an amazing student, don't be afraid to ask for help.
F.As a consequence, they manage their time and resources wisely.
G.Occasionally, they'll even ask their professors for ways to improve.

Superhuman artificial intelligence is already among us.Well, sort of.When it comes to playing games like
chess and Go(围棋),or solving difficult scientific challenges like predicting protein(蛋白质)structures,.
computers are well ahead of us.But we have one superpower they aren't close to mastering:mind reading.
Humans have a mysterious ability to reason the goals,.desires and beliefs of others,,a crucial(至关重要的)
skill that means we can anticipate (other people's actions and the consequences of our own.Reading minds
comes so easily to us,though, that we often don't think to spell out what we want.If AIs are to become truly
useful in everyday life-to cooperate effectively with us or to understand that a child might run into the road
after a bouncing ball-we have to give them this gift that evolution (has given us to read other people's
minds.
Psy chologists (refer to the ability to infer others'mental state as theory of mind.In humans, this
ability starts to develop at a very young age.How to reproduce the ability in machines is far from clear, though.
One of the main challenges is context. For instance ()if someone asks whether you are going for a run and
you reply "it's raining",they can quickly conclude that the answer is no.But this requires huge amounts of
background knowledge about running, weather and human preferences.
Moreover, whether humans or AI,the theory of mind is supposed to emerge (naturally from one's
own learning process.Building prior knowledge into AI makes it reliant on our imperfect understanding
of theory of mind.In addition,AI may be capable of developing approaches we could never imagine. There can be
many forms of theory of mind that we don't know about simply because we live in a human body that has certain
types of senses and a certain ability to think.
Yet we might still want Al to have a more human-like form of theory of mind.Humans can clearly explain
their goals and desires to each other using common language and ideas. While letting AI form the theory of mind
in their learning process is likely to lead to developing more powerful AI,simply building in shared ways to
represent knowledge may be more crucial for humans to trust and communicate with AI.
It is important to remember, though, that the pursuit (of machines with theory of mind is about more
than just building more useful robots. It is also a stepping stone on the path towards a deeper goal for AI and
robotics research:building truly self-aware machines.Whether we will ever get there remains to be seen. But
along the way thinking about other people and other agents ()we are on the path to learning to think about
ourselves.

A.When kids see their mom after hurting themselves and they cry louder.

C.When a father tells his kid some food is good for health and the kid eats it.
D.When a teacher asks for a boy's homework and he answers"my dog ate it".

At a conference last week,I received an interesting piece of advice:"Assume we are wrong."When Nosek
recommended that I and other scientists assume that we were wrong,he was sharing a strategy that he's employed
in his own lab-a strategy for changing the way we respond to criticism.
Assuming that we are wrong is not so foreign to science. Many of our past scientific theories have been
wrong,so surely many of our current theories will turn out to be wrong, too. That doesn't mean we haven't made
progress, but it does suggest that there is always room for improvement.
One worry about this approach is that it could discourage scientists, because tying to be less wrong might
be a less effective encouragement than the promise of being right.Another concem is that a strategy that works
well with scientists might not work when it comes to communicating science with the public.
Despite these worries,I still like Nosek's suggestion because it builds in humility ()(There are things
I do not know!")along with a sense that we can do better (There are things I do not know yet!").It also builds in
a sense of community-we're all in the same boat when it comes to falling short of getting things right.Perhaps
the focus on a shared goal-our goal as scientists and humans of being less wrong-can help make up for the
harms in scientific motivation or communication.
I also like Nosek's advice because it isn't limited to science.Trying to be less wrong-rather than more
right-could be a beneficial way to communicate our aims across a variety of contexts, whether it's a daily
argument or a business decision.I may be wrong about who did the dishes last night,or about what is the best
investment if I begin from the assumption that I can be wrong and I'm trying to be less wrong, any challenge may
not appear so threatening.

Once upon a time, there lived a young boy named Ethan in a small village. With a passion for music,Ethan
was enthusiastic about playing the guitar.Every day after school,he would rush home, grab his guitar, and lose
himself in the melodies(乐曲)he created,
One summer, the village was hosting a talent show, and Ethan decided to participate. However, doubts
started to flood into his mind.He began comparing himself to other talented musicians and questioning his
abilities. The fear of failure began to consume him.
But Ethan's grandfather, who had always been his biggest supporter, noticed his grandson's inner struggle.
He sat down with Ethan and shared a story from his own youth.
"When I was your age,I had a dream of becoming a painter. But I was filled with self-doubt,just like you
are now.I decided to seek guidance from a wise old artist in a nearby town.
The old artist listened to my worries and offered me a challenge. He asked me to paint a picture on a large
canvas in front of a crowd.Overwhelmed by the challenge,I hesitated.
The wise artist smiled and told me not to focus on what others might think. He asked me to paint from my
heart and pour my soul into every stroke. The beauty lies not in perfection, but in the authenticity of
one's creation
Encouraged by these words,I accepted the challenge.I painted with passion, letting my emotions guide my
brush. Finally,a beautiful masterpiece appeared on the canvas."
Finishing the story,Ethan's grandfather said,"That day,I realized that success is not defined by how perfect
we are or how we compare to others. It's about embracing our unique talents, taking risks, and expressing
ourselves with passion and authenticity."

A
Four best places to go on holiday

A.Curious. B.Brave. C.Calm. D.Patient.
