Friendships do not always run smoothly. Even the closest friends may quarrel, misunderstand each other or slowly drift apart. When a friendship is in trouble, what should we do? The good news is that many broken friendships can still be mended if we act in the right way. Here is some advice that may help.
First, do not pretend that nothing has happened. If your friend ignores you or says something unkind, try to find out why instead of guessing in silence. Many friendships break simply because the two sides never talk about the real problem. The longer you avoid each other, the harder it becomes to say the first word. 1________
Second, give yourself time to calm down. When you are angry or hurt, you may say things that you will regret later. Take a walk, write down your feelings, or talk to someone you trust before you meet your friend again. 2________
Third, tell your friend honestly how you feel. Use 'I' sentences such as 'I felt hurt when you forgot our plan' instead of blaming words like 'You always let me down'. This makes it much easier for your friend to listen. 3________
Fourth, be ready to forgive. Everyone makes mistakes, and your friend may be as sorry as you are. If he truly apologizes and means it, try to give the friendship a second chance. A friendship that has survived a quarrel is often stronger than one that has never been tested. 4________
Finally, remember that not every friendship can be saved. If a friend keeps hurting you on purpose and never changes, it may be healthier to let the friendship end quietly. 5________
A. Facing the truth, however painful, is the first step to fixing it.
B. A calm heart can think far more clearly than an angry one.
C. Honest and gentle words often open a door that shouting can never open.
D. Refusing to forgive may only leave you more lonely in the end.
E. Letting go of a harmful friendship is not failure, but self-respect.
F. The safest way to avoid a quarrel is never to tell your friend the truth.
G. A true friendship will never meet any problem or disagreement at all.
五、阅读理解
(一)
Posted by BlueSky, 9:15 p.m.: I really need some advice. Two weeks ago my best friend Anna started spending all her time with a new girl in our class. When I asked her about it, she said I was being too sensitive. We argued, and now we have not spoken for days. I feel hurt and a little betrayed. What should I do?
Reply by WarmHeart, 9:40 p.m.: I understand how you feel, but try not to blame Anna too quickly. Making a new friend does not mean losing an old one. Maybe she simply did not realise how left out you felt. Why not send her a message and tell her honestly, without accusing her of anything?
Reply by OldOwl, 10:05 p.m.: When I was your age, I lost a good friend over a silly quarrel. I was too proud to say sorry first, and we never made up. Looking back, I regret it deeply. If the friendship is worth keeping, do not wait for the other person to move first.
Reply by SunnyDay, 10:20 p.m.: It is also fine to give both of you some space. After a few days, the anger usually cools down. Then you can meet and talk calmly. If Anna still cares about you, she will be glad to make up. If not, you will at least know where you stand.
Posted by BlueSky, 11:00 p.m.: Thank you all so much. I have just sent Anna a short message saying that I miss her and that I am ready to talk. Maybe friendship is not about never fighting, but about being brave enough to reach out again.

(二)
Tom and Jack had been best friends since primary school. They played football together, shared their secrets and even wore the same kind of shoes. Everyone in class called them 'the twins'. Then one day, something happened that almost ended their friendship.
During a maths test, Jack copied an answer from Tom without asking. The teacher noticed and thought that Tom had been cheating too. Tom was punished and lost his place in the school team. He was so angry that he shouted at Jack in front of the whole class and refused to speak to him again.
For two weeks, they sat far apart and acted like strangers. Tom told himself that he would never forgive Jack. But deep down he felt lonely. Every time he saw Jack sitting alone at lunch, a strange sadness rose in his heart. He began to miss the jokes they had shared more than he enjoyed being right.
One evening Jack appeared at Tom's door with a football. 'I was wrong,' he said quietly. 'I should never have copied your answer, and I should have told the teacher the truth.' He had even written a letter to the teacher to explain everything and clear Tom's name.
Tom did not answer at once, but at last he took the ball. They went to the park and played until it was dark. Later Tom said, 'Being angry felt good for a while, but being alone felt terrible.' The two boys learned that a true friendship is not one that never breaks, but one that is brave enough to be repaired.
