I first met Judith in 2006 when I was working at the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies at King’s College London. Excited to have struck up a friendship with a historian whose work had been extremely important to my History PhD, I was invited to her London flat for a meal. I was a little surprised to discover on arrival that this would not be an intimate occasion, but the crowd made sense when our hosts announced that this was not an ordinary meal gathering but their wedding(婚礼). It was a warm and happy celebration and there was a lot of laughter. Some months later Judith was invited as a speaker at a meeting on women’s rights. Her lecture turned out to be a great success, showing people’s interest in her topic and her fame in Britain. We had a short and quick friendship in Judith’s richly connected and intellectually active life, but her generosity and insights(深刻见解) have stuck with me. When I returned to Australia, her ongoing support took the form of books, chapters and articles that were always close to hand. When I started my PhD in 1999, Judith’s writings were models of women’s rights history that made it seem possible to write my own history of the pregnant body. Her thoughts in women’s rights and belief in poststructuralist approaches to historical research offered a path in understanding the changing nature of the pregnant body in Australian medicine, law and women’s rights. As I later restarted my research after receiving my PhD, her historical insights continued to inform and guide me. 1.What does the underlined part “an intimate occasion” in paragraph 2 refer to?( ) A.A large public celebration. B.A small private gathering. C.A serious business meeting. D.A formal educational exploration. 2.Which of the following can best describe Judith?( ) A.Kind but strict. B.Outgoing and frank. C.Friendly but mysterious. D.Insightful and inspiring. 3.How did Judith’s work influence the author’s PhD research?( ) A.It offered her research methods. B.It provided ideas for her writing. C.It served to guide her choices of careers. D.It presented large numbers of medical cases. 4.Why does the author write the text?( ) A.To respond to a widespread doubt. B.To remember an important friend. C.To introduce a pioneer’s opinions. D.To tell the death of a famous historian. B篇 If you and your best friends love laughing at the same comedies or tearing up during the same movies, that is not accidental(偶然的). A new study has found that people whose brains react in similar ways to the same video are more likely to form lasting friendships. Researchers followed a group of MBA students from their arrival on campus. Before the students had a chance to get to know each other, 41 of them watched a series of movie clips while researchers recorded their brain response. The scientists then tracked the students’ social networks for the next 8 months. Noticeably, those who processed(处理) the videos in similar ways were more likely to become friends later, compared with peers whose brains reacted differently. Rather than being about shared taste in shows or sports, the findings suggest that deeper similarities in how our brains understand the world may help explain why some friendships last while others fade. Friendship has long been explained by homophily — the idea that “birds of a feather flock together”. People often bond through shared backgrounds or hobbies. But the findings suggest something deeper at play: friendships may be rooted in shared ways of understanding and making sense of the world. Brain regions linked to emotion, attention, and meaning-making — including the orbitofrontal cortex, which processes subjective(主观的) value, and the medial prefrontal cortex — show the strongest similarities among people who later become close. The researchers argued that while some friendships form by chance — like sitting next to someone in class — deeper, longer-lasting bonds may come from similar brain activities. Friendships born out of circumstances often fade, while those rooted in shared brain responses last. 5.How did the researchers conduct the study?( ) A.By comparing students’ movie preferences. B.By grading students’ learning performance. C.By interviewing students about their hobbies. D.By tracking brain responses and social bonds. 6.What contributes to lasting friendships according to the study?( ) A.Shared personal interests. B.Regular contact in daily life. C.Similar understanding of the world. D.Common educational backgrounds. 7.What does the underlined word “homophily” in paragraph 4 probably mean?( ) A.Similarity. B.Activity. C.Chance. D.Emotion. 8.What is the main purpose of the text?( ) A.To suggest methods of maintaining friendships. B.To discuss the role of interests in friendships. C.To explain scientific reasons for lasting friendships. D.To describe the brain activity related to friendships. 1.on the rocks 2.at a loss 3.out of her sight 4.let go of 5.in the wrong 6.pick up the pieces 7.made it 8.hung out 9.hung out 四、1.on 2.reading 3.Judging 4.talking 5.misunderstood;to 五、1. it’s time for you to rethink your relationship 2.so friendly that I soon calmed myself down 3.what to say 4.whether it is at break or after school 5.I see my friend chatting with a new classmate 6.Suffering from great stress 六、1.have been 2.to walk 3.hardly 4.original 5.but 6.a 7.who/that 8.recovering 9.to 10.anxiety Part2 能力提升 七、1-4:BDBB 5-8:DCAC ( 1 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
