I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston’s news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR’s news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation — whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I’ve felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status (地位), and even language. It’s the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone — help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10, and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.
24. How did the author feel in the early years of school?
A. Curious. B. Unfree. C. Loose. D. Impatient.
25. What do we know about the author’s job at WBUR?
A. He did it for his father. B. He did it against his will.
C. He risked his neck doing it. D. He took to it like a duck to water.
26. What does the circus probably mean to the author?
A. A means of living. B. A chance to go anywhere.
C. A part of his identity. D. A way to forget his troubles.
27. Why does the author write the text?
A. To express his love for circus performances.
B. To stress the value of performing.
C. To share his personal experiences in a circus.
D. To discuss the problem of choosing a job.

If someone asked whether you like the arts, you’d probably say you do at least in theory. According to a survey, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults say the arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences”. However, only 30 percent attended a concert of any type in 2017; 23 percent went to an art museum. Fewer than half actively created art of any kind.
The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed. Maybe you like to play a little background music while you work or do the chores, but even before the pandemic, most of us rarely, if ever, saw a live performance, let alone visited a gallery or watched a play.
Too often, we let the dull reality of life get in the way of the arts. But this is a mistake. The arts are the opposite of an escape from reality; they might just be the most realistic glimpse we ever get into the nature and meaning of life. If you make time for consuming and producing the arts the same way you make time for work and exercise and family commitments, I assure you that you’ll find your life getting fuller and happier. Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry. Or maybe your dizziness struck as you emerged from a narrow side street in an unfamiliar city. There you found yourself in a beautiful town square as if in a fantasy. They probably stimulated a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.
If you are among the people who feel that the arts are pure pleasures to experience and participate in, you might see them as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat the arts less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity. Then draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave the arts into your everyday life.
28. What prevents people from enjoying the arts according to the text?
A. Lack of interest. B. Avoidance of duty.
C. Shortage of time. D. Art space inaccessibility.
29. What can we learn about the role of the arts according to the text?
A. They explore mysteries of life. B. They spark emotional responses.
C. They enhance physical well-being. D. They offer a getaway from daily life.
30. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Barriers to combine the arts and life. B. Benefits of engaging with the arts.
C. Forms of distracting pleasures. D. Ways to integrate the arts into daily routine.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Arts Journey: Refreshing Soul
B. The Arts Pursuit: Transforming Dull into Full
C. Embracing the Arts: From Luxury to Necessity
D. Connecting with the Arts: From Reality to Fantasy

Stressed at work and feeling your blood pressure rise? People all over the world are told by their doctors to try for a low-sodium (钠) diet to treat high blood pressure or other diseases, but there’s no denying that salt makes food taste good. Fortunately, Japanese researchers at Tokyo’s Meiji University and the manufacturer Kirin have developed high-tech chopsticks that enhance salty tastes, potentially helping those who need to reduce sodium in their diets.
These wired-up chopsticks are actually part of a device that the researchers say can enhance the salty flavor of low-sodium foods. And when they were tested on participants for the first time, results showed that the high-tech chopsticks increase perceived (察觉到) saltiness in foods by about 1.5 times.
According to the research team, the basic principle is that the extra salty flavor is perceived due to extremely weak electric currents conveyed directly into the mouth through the tip of one of the chopsticks. Scientists have apparently been using this kind of weak electricity to play with flavors in the lab for years, but these chopsticks in particular are set to adjust the activity of ions (离子) in sodium chloride (table salt), which enhances salty flavor.
And do these chopsticks work as expected? To verify the effect of the new chopsticks, the researchers conducted an experiment on a total of 36 participants aged 40 to 65, all of whom were eating a low-sodium diet. If nothing else, one thing was clear: participants using the chopsticks tasted more salt than they did without. Results show that they even thought that low-sodium food eaten with the high-tech chopsticks tasted saltier than regular food made with an average amount of sodium, and eaten with normal chopsticks.
The chopsticks aren’t on store shelves quite yet, but with promising results, people around the world who are unhappily devoted to a low-sodium diet might just be excited for any updates to come!
32. What is the main function of the future high-tech chopsticks?
A. To treat blood pressure. B. To test how salty a dish is.
C. To increase the saltiness of food. D. To help reduce salt intake.
33. How do the high-tech chopsticks work?
A. By sending warning information to the brain.
B. By changing the saltiness of food with electric shocks.
C. By using electricity to transport ions between chopsticks.
D. By tricking our brains into tasting extra salt.
34. What does the underlined word “verify” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Confirm. B. Improve.
C. Change. D. Strengthen.
35. What is the writer’s attitude toward the future of the chopsticks?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Uncertain. D. Pessimistic.

Lena had always been confident in her studies — until she entered high school. In her first math class, Mr. Carter wrote a series of expressions on the blackboard. While most of her classmates nodded and took notes, the symbols “x” and “y” seemed to swim before her eyes. She felt as if she were listening to a “foreign language”.
The confusion only grew when she sat down to do her homework. For two hours she remained at her desk, staring at the textbook and the blank pages of her notebook. She reread the first question ten times, but the numbers refused to make sense. Upset and ashamed, she never felt so defeated by a subject.
Her anxiety deepened over the following days. She stopped raising her hand. She was worried that her questions would sound stupid. One day, Mr. Carter called on her to answer a question. Lena stood up, her face burning with embarrassment because she was totally clueless about the answer. But a boy named Jax said in a low voice, “Even a middle schooler knows that!”
Lena bit her lip and sank back into her seat with her head hanging very low. Seeing this, Mr. Carter asked Lena to stay after class. Instead of criticizing her, he said gently, “I notice you’ve been struggling, Lena. Math can be tough at first. Like learning to play a musical instrument, it requires the right method and a lot of practice. I have talked to Zoe and she has agreed to help you. You know, she is a kind girl and is always ready to help.”
The next day, Mr. Carter rearranged the seats, and Zoe became Lena’s new deskmate.

So the four hour day work timetable is much longer than most people think. Luckily, I really enjoy what I do. It's not only my work, but also my hobby. I can't tell you how many time someone has said to me, man, what a kick job. I mean, you only work four hours a day. It's true that I do a morning program from six AM to ten AM, but IT isn't all my working time each day. I get up that too, okay? And then I take a quick shower and sit down at my computer. I collect program information and up data program's website until four thirty AM. I arrived at the radio station at five AM and spend the next hour preparing, recording and so on. The program begins at six AM and goes until ten AM. After that, often I can walk out soon, but sometimes there are meetings. Then I go home and answer program emails, have lunch and have a short rest. Then at about four pm, I began preparing for my next day. IT really last two hours.

C 29. B 30. D 31. C

根据最后一段中“Then draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave the arts into your everyday life.(然后制定一个你的艺术接触之旅的时间表,逐渐把艺术融入你的日常生活)”可推知,下文可能会讲述把艺术融入日常生活的方法。
根据最后一段中“If you are among the people who feel that the arts are pure pleasures to experience and participate in, you might see them as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat the arts less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity.(如果你觉得艺术是一种纯粹的乐趣,可以去体验和参与,那么你可能会把它们视为奢侈品,而更好的态度是把艺术不那么看作是一种分散注意力的乐趣,而更多地看作是锻炼或睡眠,是一种必需品)”,并结合文章主要讲述了人们因日常责任而缺少时间享受艺术,但应将艺术视为必需品融入生活。

D 33. D 34. A 35. B

根据第一段的最后一句“Fortunately, Japanese researchers at Tokyo’s Meiji University and the manufacturer Kirin have developed high-tech chopsticks that enhance salty tastes, potentially helping those who need to reduce sodium in their diets. (幸运的是,日本东京明治大学的研究人员和制造商麒麟开发出了一种高科技筷子,可以增强咸味,可能会帮助那些需要减少饮食中钠含量的人。)”可知,这种高科技筷子的功能是帮助减少食盐摄入量。故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“According to the research team, the basic principle is that the extra salty flavor is perceived due to extremely weak electric currents conveyed directly into the mouth through the tip of one of the chopsticks. (据研究小组介绍,其基本原理是,通过其中一根筷子的尖端直接进入口腔的极弱电流会让人感受到额外的咸味。)”可知,这种高科技筷子是通过让大脑感受额外的咸味来发挥其功能的。故选D。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段前两句“And do these chopsticks work as expected? To verify the effect of the new chopsticks, the researchers conducted an experiment on a total of 36 participants aged 40 to 65, all of whom were eating a low-sodium diet. (这些筷子像预期的那样好用吗?为了 ________ 新筷子的效果,研究人员对36名年龄在40到65岁之间的参与者进行了一项实验,他们都在吃低钠饮食。)”可知,画线词所在句前一句是对筷子的效果提出疑问,而后面是对实验结果的描述,故可推知,划线词是“证明,证实”的意思。故选A。

Everyone thinks they're great listeners. But the truth is that hearing isn’t necessarily listening, nor is it necessarily listening well. Listening is an art as well as a basic life skill that we are encouraged to practise and master.___36___
●Don't interrupt
___37___ To master the art of listening, you need to stop any good thoughts that come to mind and let the person say everything they need to say. Often times people simply need someone to talk to, not someone who will cut in and give their own thoughts and opinions.
●Practice active listening.
To understand better in communication, you can first practice active listening. The art of listening isn't simply about staying quiet 100% of the time, it's also about asking questions, which are for clarification or for further explanation, so that you can fully understand what the speaker is telling you. ___38___ You can also make noises that show you agree with what he person is saying such as “yes”, ‘'yeah", and “okay.”
●___39___
About 60-75% of our communication is accomplished without speaking. In order to know whether to encourage the speaker, or to open yourself more, it's essential to know what the person's body is saying. Do they display signs of discomfort? Are they cautious about you? Their body language tells a lot.
●Create a suitable environment.
It can be difficult to listen to another person when the TV is screaming, your phone is buzzing and there are thousands of cars passing by. ___40___ Also, when you indicate it would be good to “find a quiet place," you put importance in the person and what they say, and then you show care and consideration.
A. Listen to non-verbal communication.
B. Let the person speak without interruption.
C. Listen without forming responses in your mind.
D. Here's how to bring the vital life skill into your daily existence.
E. Additionally, it's important to hold back your negative judgments.
F. Another great way to show your understanding is to respond by nodding.
G. When you remove the distractions and find a quiet place it’s easier to listen attentively.
D 37. B 38. F 39. A 40. G
根据上文“Listening is an art as well as a basic life skill that we are encouraged to practise and master.(听力是一种艺术,也是一种基本的生活技能,我们被鼓励去练习和掌握)”以及下文作者分类介绍了在日常生活中可以应用的各类倾听的方式方法。可知D项:Here's how to bring the vital life skill into your daily existence.(下面是如何将这一重要的生活技能运用到你的日常生活中)合乎题意。
Let the person speak without interruption.(让对方说话时不要打断)概括和解释标题,合乎题意。故选B。
根据下文“you can also make noises that show you agree with what he person is saying such as “yes”, ‘'yeah", and “okay.”(你也可以发出一些声音来表示你同意对方说的话,比如yes和okay)”中的“also”,我们可知设空处描述的情形也应为对某人的发言表示同意或肯定时做出的姿态,从而增进互动,表示理解。F项:Another great way to show your understanding is to respond by nodding.(另一种表示理解的好方法是点头回应)合乎题意。故选F。
【39题详解】
设空处概括本段内容,为本段小标题, 设空处与上下段的首句句式保持一致,即应是祈使句。根据下文“About 60-75% of our communication is accomplished without 大约60-75%的交流是在不说话的情况下完成的。为了知道是要鼓励说话者,还是更开放自己,有必要了解这个人的身体在说什么。根据下文“About 60-75% of our communication is accomplished without speaking. speaking. In order to know whether to encourage the speaker, or to open yourself more, it's essential to know what the person's body is saying.(大约60-75%的交流是在不说话的情况下完成的。为了知道是要鼓励说话者,还是更开放自己,有必要了解这个人的身体在说什么)”可知,作者阐述了倾听说话者肢体语言的重要性,也即话语本身以外的身体信号,从而判断倾听者应该采取怎样的方式更好地促进交流。A项:Listen to non-verbal communication.(倾听非语言交流)合乎题意。故选A。
根据上文“It can be difficult to listen to another person when the TV is screaming, your phone is buzzing and there are thousands of cars passing by.(当电视发出刺耳的声音,你的手机嗡嗡作响,成千上万辆汽车驶过时,你很难去听别人说话)”可知,前文叙述了在嘈杂、混乱的环境中良好的倾听一般难以达成,而后文中的“find a quite place(找一个安静角落)”则应是原文再现。 When you remove the distractions and find a quiet place it’s easier to listen attentively.(当你排除干扰,找到一个安静的地方,更容易专心倾听)合乎题意。

Every afternoon, the two girls studied together.

One month later, the result of the first math exam came out.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Every afternoon, the two girls studied together. Zoe never laughed at Lena’s slow progress or silly questions. Instead, she explained patiently and even drew pictures to make those difficult concepts easier to understand. When Lena still got stuck, Zoe broke down each step until she got it right. With Zoe’s encouragement, Lena also worked harder. She took more detailed notes and practiced extra problems every night. Gradually, the “foreign language” of math became familiar, and she even started to feel a little excited when she solved a tough problem.
One month later, the result of the first math exam came out. Lena’s hands kept shaking as she picked up her paper. When she saw a bright red “B”, a broad smile spread across her face. She ran to thank Zoe, who hugged her happily, and then found Mr. Carter to share the good news. He patted her shoulder proudly and said, “Hard work pays off”. Lena smiled, realizing that with friendly support, encouragement and her own perseverance, any difficulty could be overcome.
