A famous story from New Book of Tang tells of Yang Yuhuan. She loved lychees (荔枝), a fruit that grew in faraway southern China and would easily go bad during transportation. To make her happy, Emperor Xuanzong ordered the riders to bring lychees to Chang’an. When the lychees finally arrived, they were still fresh. This makes people surprised at how fast the ancient postal (邮政的) system was!
In fact, China’s postal system started over 3,000 years ago in the Zhou Dynasty. Workers called “Xingfu” carried government orders and army messages. At that time, many places had institutions (机构) similar to post stations, but with different names. When the Qin State unified China, it made them use the same name — “You”, which is still used in China’s postal industry today.
While the postal system was well-developed during the Qin and Han dynasties, only the government could use it. Ordinary people had to depend on friends or family to send letters and other things.
During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the postal system took shape, centered around the capital and reaching all parts of the country. The poet Cen Shen wrote, “One post station after another, the post riders flow like stars, setting off from Xianyang in the morning and reaching the top of Mount Longshan in the evening.” This highly developed system allowed Yang to get her fresh lychees.
In the Ming Dynasty, “security escort agencies” appeared. People paid them to protect their money and safety during travel.
However, in the mid-19th century, China had to open its doors to the West. This led to big changes in the postal industry. Finally, in 1913, the ancient postal system officially came to an end.
( ) 27. Why does the text begin with a story?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To explain a book.
C. To mention an emperor. D. To describe lychees.
( ) 28. What is the correct order of the following events?
①The postal system was mainly around the capital.
②Only the government could use the postal system.
③Many places had institutions similar to post stations.
A. ①→②→③ B. ①→③→② C. ②→①→③ D. ③→②→①
( ) 29. What does the underlined part “security escort agencies” probably mean in Chinese?
A.客栈 B.镖局 C.书院 D.钱庄
( ) 30. What is the best title for the text?
A. Big Changes in Money Safety B. Development of Lychee Business
C. Postal System in Ancient China D. Transportation in the Tang Dynasty
第三节 短文填空(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后方框中的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余选项。
It’s common for parents to compare their children with other kids. While they might mean well, it can make you feel sad or even angry. 31
Understand their purposes.
Most parents compare because they want you to improve. They believe that others’ success will encourage you. 32 Ask yourself: are they really criticizing (批评) me, or just hoping I’ll do better?
Communicate calmly.
If comparisons (比较) get you down, talk to your parents in a respectful way. For example, you can say, “I know you want me to do better, but when you compare me with others, I feel like I’m not good enough.” 33
Learn from others.
If your parents praise some people, ask yourself what you can learn from them. 34 Get into their good habits, and you will do better next time.
35
Write down how good you are — maybe you’re kind, responsible or organized. When your parents compare, think of what makes you special. With the confidence, you will not care too much about unhelpful comparisons.
Parents’ comparisons can make you feel bad, but you can deal with them wisely. Stay calm, communicate, and focus on growing at your own speed. Remember others’ success does not define (定义) who you are — your progress is what truly matters.
A. Build self-confidence.
B. Focus on all the comparisons.
C. How should you deal with this situation?
D. Maybe they achieve higher grades, or use time more wisely.
E. So try to understand why your parents compare you with other kids.
F. This helps them understand your feelings without starting a disagreement.
