Despite advances in technology, many companies still plan routes for their delivery vehicles the same way they did a decade ago. Managers create routes the day before, and then hand printouts to drivers to follow or import them into the hand-held devices. But when drivers get stuck in traffic jams while on their rounds, they’re simply out of luck and behind schedule. The same thing happens if there’s a surprise snowstorm that makes roads impassable.
Wise Systems, a Boston start-up, is dealing with this age-old problem by pairing machine learning with data collected from drivers’ mobile phones. It deals with information like the driver’s driving speed and location with other details including traffic, weather, where the orders are being delivered, and when customers are available to receive their orders.
What emerges is a delivery journey that can be tweaked on the fly depending on any complications that come up. If the technology determines that a driver will miss a scheduled stop because of road closures, for example, it will change the schedule for the entire day. If that’s not possible, the driver will receive reminders on his or her mobile phone as a not-so-hidden clue to pick up the pace.
The goal of the technology is to create routes that allow drivers to work more quickly and effectively, which companies put more and more effort into now as they fight for customers who expect their orders almost immediately. By doing so, companies can save money by increasing the number of deliveries that drivers can make during shifts and make customers happier by raising the likelihood that their orders will arrive on time, or be delivered by the driver they prefer.

Many people list hiccups(打嗝) as one of the most annoying problems that are associated with humans. For a group of people, continuous or reoccurring hiccups can seriously affect their quality of life. The question “What causes hiccups?” is one of the most searched medical questions.
Dr Ali Seifi, an associate professor of the University of Texas Health Science Center, was tired of the traditional methods of removing hiccups, like drinking water or adjusting breathing. He then came up with the idea that a straw could help interrupt hiccups. The straw, which goes by the marketing name of HiccAway, requires more suction power(吸力) than a regular straw when people drink through it. Drinking through this straw can excite the “Phrenic” and “Vagus” nerves at the same time, allowing the brain to stop hiccups.
Dr James Alvarez from the University of Texas at Arlington conducted a study on HiccAway. He gathered 249 volunteers to test the straw. About 92% of the participants said that HiccAway helped their hiccups go away. When it comes to effectiveness, this straw received a score of 4.58 out of 5. About 90% of the participants rated it more effective than traditional methods. A majority of the participants reported they only experienced hiccups occasionally, while about 11 reported daily hiccups, and 53 reported that they suffered from hiccups weekly. The frequent sufferers reported back success rates that were consistently as high as those from people who didn’t suffer from them as often.
However, hiccups are an issue where placebo effect(安慰剂效应) could likely come into play. A lot of people swear by solutions that might not work for others. It is not clear how this trial could be conducted in a more scientific way.
5. Why is the question mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the harm of hiccups.
B. To explain the reasons for hiccups.
C. To provide the treatment for hiccups.
D. To show the commonness of hiccups.
6. What can be inferred about HiccAway?
A. It works quite well in the study.
B. It will go on sale in the near future.
C. It is as convenient as other straws.
D. It is more effective for frequent sufferers.
7. Which aspect of the study is discussed in the end?
A. The finding. B. The limitation.
C. The application. D. The significance.
8. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Hiccups cause widespread human suffering.
B. Researchers unlock the secrets of hiccups.
C. HiccAway could be a solution to hiccups.
D. Hiccups would be nothing to worry about.

1. 答案A
根据第一段中的“Managers create routes the day before, and then hand printouts to drivers to follow or import them into the hand-held devices ... makes roads impassable.”
根据最后一段中的“The goal of the technology is to create routes that allow drivers to work more quickly and effectively, which companies put more and more effort into now”可知,该技术的目标是创建使驾驶员能够更快、更有效地工作的路线,目前各公司为此投入了越来越多的精力,由此可知,提高工作效率对公司来说越来越重要。

6. 答案 A
根据第三段中的“About 92% of the participants ... traditional methods.” 根据第二段中的“The straw, which goes by the marketing name of HiccAway”可知,HiccAway已经上市了,B项不符合语境。 根据第三段中的“The frequent sufferers ... as often.”
