In recent years, mooncakes with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredients have become increasingly popular. It shows that modern consumers are paying more attention to safer and healthier food in daily life.
TCM believes that many Chinese herbs can serve as both food and medicine. They are helpful in preventing diseases, which is called “medicine food homology”. It is the key theory of food therapy. So far, 106 kinds of common Chinese herbs have been allowed to be used in food by official organizations.
To meet people’s health needs, traditional mooncakes are changing — producers cut down sugar and oil in their products. Many famous TCM brands and hospitals have launched TCM mooncakes. For example, Tong Ren Tang, a well-known ancient TCM brand, has created mooncakes with ingredients like danggui, dangshen and shihu. These mooncakes are made in five colors, following the TCM idea that “five colors nourish five organs”.
Han Lu, a researcher from Tong Ren Tang, said, “Consumers prefer natural food with less sugar, less oil and no additives. Besides, TCM culture has won greater popularity among young people in recent years.” Experts will carefully choose TCM ingredients to avoid bad medicine reactions. Fruits like grapes and coconuts are also added to make the mooncakes taste better. A local consumer in Chengdu shared her experience. She chose mooncakes with chenpi and Chinese yam on purpose, because they are good for her weak stomach. She also said such mooncakes have no strong medicine smell and taste special.
However, some experts point out that they still remain high in oil and sugar and are often consumed more as a snack than for their health benefits. Ma Xiaoju, director of the department of nutrition at the School of Public Health at the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, warned that foods produced with TCM may contain only small amounts of herbs, which may not have significant health benefits. Additionally, due to their high sugar and fat content, mooncakes are not recommended for people with high blood sugar levels.
In general, TCM-themed food and drinks are popular across China now. For most people, they are not used to treat illness, but simply help them keep a healthier lifestyle.
4.Why do TCM mooncakes become popular recently?
A.They are much cheaper than common mooncakes.
B.People’s health awareness is rising.
C.They can cure all kinds of diseases.
D.All hospitals begin to produce them.
5.What does the underlined phrase “medicine food homology” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Some herbs can be food as well as medicine.
B.Medicine should be made with common food.
C.People must eat medicine with daily food.
D.Traditional food is better than modern medicine.
6.What can we learn about TCM mooncakes from the passage?
A.They have a strong terrible medicine smell.
B.They are totally healthy with no sugar.
C.Experts choose TCM ingredients safely for mooncakes.
D.High blood sugar patients can enjoy TCM mooncakes freely.
7.What is the author’s attitude towards TCM mooncakes?
A.Uninterested. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Worried.

Many companies have advertised a feature that enables users to employ AI as a recipe generator assistant. In one demonstration (展示,演示), a user asks the virtual assistant for a meal plan with ingredients (食材) they have, and the AI returns a list of recipes (食谱) using those ingredients. In fact, the employment of AI in the brainstorming stage is also gaining increasing popularity. While that seems convenient, most of the press about the relationship between AI and cooking has been negative so far.
For years, chefs on popular video platforms have staged cook-offs between “real” and AI recipes, with the “real” chefs often winning. In 2025, Tasty, an online platform, compared a chocolate cake recipe generated by an AI tool with one developed by a professional cook. While the AI recipe baked up fine, the cook’s recipe won in a blind taste test. The tasters preferred the cook’s cake for its not-too-sweet and juicier flavor compared to the AI cake.
Sarah and Kaitlin Leung are sisters who run a famous food blog. Their recipes go through a long process. They brainstorm ideas, do research, and experiment a lot before testing each recipe up to 40 times. “We know that our readers are trusting us, so we try to make sure our recipe not only works but is also easy to follow,” Sarah says. “The stories that surround these recipes and the connections that we make with people through these recipes are priceless — it’s so deeply human. By comparison, the machine doesn’t eat and the machine can’t taste.”
“It’s not all negative for me.” A software engineer Olson believes AI has a place in the recipe development process. He adds, “but I don’t think the technology is there to the point where you can have an entirely AI-generated blog, although that would be a cool concept. Maybe someone should try it and see how it goes.”
8.What can AI do in developing a recipe?
A.Planning the budget.
B.Shortening cooking time.
C.Coming up with ideas.
D.Demonstrating cooking methods.
9.What can we know about the competition launched by Tasty?
A.The AI tool was developed by a cook.
B.The result agrees with those of previous years.
C.The cook’s cake tasted sweeter and juicier.
D.The comparison was based on the appearance.
10.How do the sisters ensure the quality of their recipes on their food blog?
A.By doing multiple tests.
B.By learning the recipes from AI.
C.By using priceless ingredients.
D.By following standard procedures.
11.What is Olson’s attitude towards entirely AI-generated blogs?
A.Approving. B.Unconcerned.
C.Cautious. D.Negative.
D
The rainforests are alive with the sound of animals. Besides the pleasure of the din (喧嚣), it is also useful to ecologists. If you want to measure the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal calls is much easier than digging about in the undergrowth looking for tracks. But such “bio-acoustic (生物声音的) analysis” is still time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears.
In a paper published on October 17th in Nature Communications, a group of researchers led by Jörg Müller, an ecologist at the University of Würzburg, describe a better way: have a computer do the job. Smartphone apps already exist that will identify birds, bats or mammals simply by listening to the sounds they make. Their idea was to apply the principle to conservation work.
The researchers took recordings from across 43 sites in the Ecuadorean rainforest. Sound recordings were taken four times every hour, over two weeks. The various calls were identified manually by an expert, and then used to construct a list of the species present. As expected, the longer the land had been free from agricultural activity, the greater the biodiversity it hosted.
Then it was the computer’s turn. The researchers fed their recordings to artificial-intelligence models that had been trained, using sound samples from elsewhere in Ecuador, to identify 75 bird species from their calls. “We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts,” says Dr Müller.
Of course, not everything in a rainforest makes a noise. Dr. Müller and his colleagues used light-traps to capture night-flying insects, and DNA analysis to identify them. Reassuringly, they found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable proxy (指标) for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.
The results may have relevance outside ecology departments, too. Under pressure from their customers, firms such as L’Oreal, a make-up company, and Shell, an oil firm, have been spending money on forest restoration projects around the world. Dr Müller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standardized way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.
12.What can we learn about Bioacoustic analysis?
A.It makes animal calls attractive.
B.It applies to many research fields.
C.It measures biodiversity easily.
D.It requires special skill and time.
13.What can be inferred from the process of taking recordings in the rainforests?
A.Researchers trained AI models to imitate animal calls.
B.Researchers used AI tools to conserve rainforests well.
C.Agricultural activities led to a decrease in biodiversity.
D.AI tools can identify bird species as well as the experts.
14.Why did Dr. Müller and his colleagues do the survey in Paragraph 5?
A.To figure out the species of quieter animals.
B.To confirm the biodiversity of the quieter animals.
C.To emphasize the biodiversity of the noisy animals.
D.To compare the noisy animals and the quieter ones.
15.What’s the potential application of AI in forest restoration projects?
A.Identifying the sponsors.
B.Monitoring the effectiveness.
C.Evaluating the biodiversity.
D.Establishing ecology departments.

Local grasslands and forests also offer rich food resources for wildlife, forming a complete and balanced ecological system.
Besides its natural beauty, the Great Rift Valley is also important for human history. Experts have found a large number of ancient human fossils and simple tools here. 19 Therefore, the valley is widely regarded as the “cradle of human civilization”.
Today, the Great Rift Valley faces some environmental risks. Climate change and human activities such as overgrazing have damaged parts of its ecosystem. 20 Only in this way can we keep this ancient and beautiful natural wonder for future generations.
A.It is still an active geological area with occasional earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
B.The Great Rift Valley is also a home to diverse wildlife.
C.It has a long history and rich cultural traditions.
D.These discoveries help people better understand the origin and evolution of humans.
E.People have realized the importance of protecting this precious natural land.

A Hearty Welcome
Chase counted his new year gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class?” Mom asked.
“Yep!” Chase said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”
When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Robins and looked around shyly.
“This is Eva,” said Ms. Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today? “Chase raised his hand since he liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.
“Thanks, Chase, “Ms. Robins said. “Now let’s get down to our work.”
That’s when Chase realized he didn’t have a new year gift for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad about that.
At a break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Eva had brought a packed lunch. so Chase showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table.
While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the new year gifts they exchanged. This won’t be a New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts. But as he sat down at his table, an idea flooded into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering.
When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms. Robins about their plan. Ms. Robins smiled. “That’s very thoughtful, “she said. “Let’s go for it.”
It was math time, so Chase invited Eva to study with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back to the room so she wouldn’t notice.

47. Meanwhile, her new classmates were busying working on something. They were going to give Eva their “hearts”. Quickly but quietly, Ms. Robins, with an exquisite paper bag she fetched from her office, was walking around the classroom to collect the candy hearts. Growing heavy with the paper bag was the students’ welcome for their new classmate. Sitting beside Eva, Chase felt his heart racing and palms sweating. In order not to ruin the new year surprise for Eva, he pretended to be discussing math problems with her to occupy her attention. The stone in his heart finally dropped when Ms Robins tiptoed towards him and placed the paper bag on his hands.
“Here’s your new year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone.” said Chase. Surprise written on Eva’s face, she turned around and was greeted by the sunny smiles on her classmates’ faces. “Open it,” I encouraged. No sooner had she opened the paper bag than everybody cheered, “Happy New Year”. The candies which were made in the shape of hearts blurred her eyes. If only she had been able to express how much this precious gift meant to her. Springing from her seat, she stepped forward and bowed to her new but considerate classmates, who not only erased her anxiety but also planted the seed of hope in her heart. What a hearty welcome!
