Unit 3 Listening and Talking — Choose the Best App
I guess/I suppose/I believe这类句型连贯表达观点。
1. 能通过三轮听力抓取对话主旨、app功能细节,准确完成信息填空;
2. 识别并掌握表推测、猜测、信念的常用表达(might / I guess / I suppose / I believe等),理解其在口语中的委婉语气;
1. 分层完成听力任务,抓取对话中两款app的核心功能细节;
1. 准确分辨听力中表推测语气的句式,区分不同情态动词的确定程度差异;
Lead-in & Background
Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions before listening:
1. How many apps do you have on your smartphone? Which one do you use every day? Why?
2. If you could delete one app forever, which one would it be?
Key words for listening (pre-learning):
● piggy bank: a child’s coin bank, often shaped like a pig
● oink: the sound a pig makes, used here as a humorous word for “money” (幽默用法)猪叫,代指零钱
● bank account: an account you hold with a bank to save or take out money
Step 1 First Listening (Listen for main idea)
Laura and Xiao Bo are talking about apps. Listen to the conversation and find out what apps they want.
Xiao Bo is looking for a(n) ________ app to help him get in shape.
Laura would like an app for getting ________ and another that will make her ________ better.
Step 2 Second Listening (Listen for detailed information)
Listen again and try to answer the following questions.
1. What does “add some oink to my piggy bank” mean?
2. Fill in the blanks in the table below.
Who
Xiao Bo
Laura
Which app
An exercise app
An app for getting rich
What are the apps used to do?
It __________ how much you exercise and what you eat.
It also helps you __________.
This app would help you __________.
It helps you __________ for whatever you’re looking for.
Every time you pay with your phone, it __________ into your bank account.
You could __________ with this app.
Step 3 Third Listening (Catch the expressions we use to guess and share opinions)
Activity 1: Look at the expressions we use to make guesses. Pay attention to how sure the speaker is when using each one — this is a key listening test point:
● Almost certain: must, can’t, couldn’t
● Expected to happen: should
● Not certain / guesswork: might, may, could
Activity 2: Listen for the third time. Tick the sentences you hear, and underline the words that show predictions, guesses, or beliefs.
□ It might help me walk more.
□ My guess is that it wouldn’t work.
□ I imagine this app would help me get fit faster.
□ I suppose that would be good.
□ I guess you could save a little with this app.
□ I suppose there would be some problems, too.
□ I believe this app could help me get thinner.
Step 4 Oral Practice: Design a Wuhan-life App
Now it’s your turn! Think of a useful app that solves a daily problem in Wuhan life — it could be for local people or for tourists visiting our city. Use the questions below to organize your ideas:
1. What problem of Wuhan daily life will your app solve? (For example: crowded metro at rush hour, hard-to-find breakfast shops in the morning, confusing bus routes around East Lake, long queues at Yellow Crane Tower)
2. What is your app’s name?
3. Who will use it most — local Wuhan residents, tourists, or college students?
4. What special features will it have? (For example: live map of breakfast spots, real-time ferry schedule on the Yangtze, audio guide for Hubei Museum)
5. How will you persuade others to download it?
Example (for reference):
Wuhan Greenway Guide
My app is called Wuhan Greenway Guide. It is made for runners and cyclists along East Lake Greenway. The app shows you the real-time distance left to the next exit, recommends the least crowded section of the greenway, and even points out good snack shops near the trail. I guess most people who love outdoor exercise in Wuhan would download it — it is much more useful than a generic map app!
Activity 1: Prepare your 2-minute introduction in pairs, using the “guess / suppose / believe” expressions we learned.
Activity 2: Present your app idea to the class.
Activity 3: Rate your classmates’ presentations with the assessment form below.
Assessment Item
Rating (Excellent / Good / Average / Poor)
How clear the app’s function is
□ Excellent □ Good □ Average □ Poor
How well it fits real Wuhan life
□ Excellent □ Good □ Average □ Poor
How creative the idea is
□ Excellent □ Good □ Average □ Poor
How accurate your English is
□ Excellent □ Good □ Average □ Poor
How fluent your presentation is
□ Excellent □ Good □ Average □ Poor
