四、阅读理解
On a bright September morning, Zhang Han arrived at her new senior high school for the first time. She was a little nervous, because she did not know anyone there. In her hand she held a small bag and a form to fill in.
The first person she met was an exchange student from the UK. “Hi, I’m Max,” he said with a smile. “I’m new here too.” Han felt much better after they exchanged a few words. She learned that Max’s favourite subject was chemistry, and that he had come to China to learn Chinese.
Then a teacher led them to the lecture hall, where the headmaster gave a welcome speech. He told the new students that senior high school was a new start, and that everyone could do well if they worked hard. Han wrote down the school rules carefully in her notebook.
After the speech, Han went to the registration office to hand in her form. A girl in front of her could not find her pen, so Han lent her one. They began to talk and soon found that they both loved drawing. By the time they left the office, they had become friends.
Looking back on that day, Han says that she was worried for nothing. “I thought I would be lonely, but I met two good friends on the very first day,” she says. “A smile and a few kind words are the best way to start a new school life.”
