Good morning, listeners. Today we are focusing on Abby, who once worked as a teacher in Nunavut, a northern territory of Canada. In Nunavut Abby lived in a remote small community where most goods have to be shipped or flown in from distant areas. So food and housing cost a great deal. Though life there shares some similarities with her hometown in southern Canada, it also brings unique challenges. Houses there have no running water, so both drinking water and waste water must be carried by workers, meaning people have to use water wisely. Also goods in local shops are very limited, offering fewer choices than she had in her hometown. But the hardest thing to get used to is the lack of sunlight in winter. It gets dark very early each afternoon. However, Abby truly enjoyed the Christmas community activities there, such as ice sculpting and traditional skating races. She also liked the local traditional food served during celebrations. Actually she truly treasured this unique experience, which broadened her cultural horizons, and she hopes to visit there again someday.
A
The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO₂ emissions. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions — poses unique challenges. Below is the 2022 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY 52%
HEATING 28%
COOLING 12%
APPLIANCES 6%
LIGHTING 2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%. Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
SMART GRIDS (电网) — Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.
SOLAR PANELS — Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for households. Advances in photovoltaic cells have cut costs by 80% since 2010, making them viable in numerous regions.
WIND TURBINES — Community Microgrids
Small-scale turbines (涡轮机) in windy areas can power neighborhoods, though land use debates persist. “The scale of this transition is staggering,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist at MIT. Residential renewables like solar and heat pumps could meet 90% of global household demand by 2050 — but only if investments triple within this decade. Recent studies show that every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate adaptation costs. This isn’t just an environmental imperative; it’s economically inevitable.
21. Which two categories combined account for over three-quarters of total household emissions?
A. Electricity and Heating. B. Heating and Cooling.
C. Appliances and Lighting. D. Cooling and Appliances.
22. Which technology is highlighted as cost-effective for diverse climates?
A. Heat pumps. B. Smart grids. C. Solar panels. D. Wind turbines.

B
Many of us suffer from a wish to be special. We usually assume that a special person is a better person and a special life is a better life. However, my experience has helped me to understand the high cost I have paid to be special: the extra time spent trying to impress others, the meals I was too tired to cook but I still cooked, the newspaper column that I just couldn’t stop working with...
I’ve been thinking about the cost a lot since becoming a mother. I know it is very natural to want our children to feel special, perhaps more special than others, so they can develop self-confidence. But I don’t think real self-confidence comes from being raised above others. It should come from being themselves and feeling loved for that in an ordinary way. It is not believing that they are the best and trying to be that. It is understanding that they have value for being them. It is very easy to give our children the impression that to be special, they need to try to be somebody else.
Perhaps the most valuable gift we can give them is the permission to be ordinary. Trying to be special or to live a special life can in reality take them further and further away from better ones. It can also lead them to lose sight of the precious moments of the life they are actually living.
Since I have become aware of this, I start to enjoy cooking simpler meals. I also feel much more freedom when writing this column. I feel less of a need to perform than I used to. And when I do feel that need, I can recognize it and respond differently (sometimes).
At first, it might be a little bit boring to be ordinary. Now, I’ve become much more aware of the beauty of ordinary moments that I am fortunate enough to experience every day: the naughty smiles from my daughter; the funny sounds my cat makes in the middle of the night...
24. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Cost. B. Self-confidence. C. Being themselves. D. Trying to be special.
25. What does the author do now when she feels a need to perform?
A. occupy herself with her work. B. Try to hold back the desire.
C. Do what she is expected to do. D. Turn her attention to her family.
26. What does the author say about her current life?
A. It is unnatural. B. It is boring. C. It is stressful. D. It is enjoyable.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Why Should We Celebrate Being Ordinary?
B. Why Do Many of Us Try So Hard to Be Special?
C. How Does Children’s Self-Confidence Develop?
D. How Can Parents Help Kids Enjoy the Real Life?
C 25. B 26. D 27. A
根据划线单词上文的“But I don’t think real self-confidence comes from being raised above others. It should come from being themselves and feeling loved for...” 所以that代指的上文的being themselves。
根据第四段的句子“I feel less of a need to perform than I used to. And when I do feel that need,I can recognize it and respond differently (sometimes). (我觉得不像以前那么需要表演了。当我感到需要的时候,我能意识到它并做出不同的反应(有时)。)”可知,作者现在当有表现欲时,会意识到并尝试以不同方式应对,即克制这种欲望。故选B项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段的句子“Now, I’ve become much more aware of the beauty of ordinary moments that I am fortunate enough to experience every day: the naughty smiles from my daughter; the funny sounds my cat makes in the middle of the night...(现在,我更加意识到我有幸每天都能经历的平凡时刻的美好:女儿调皮的微笑;我的猫在半夜发出的奇怪的声音……)”
通读全文,特别是第一段的句子“However, my experience has helped me to understand the high cost I have paid to be special: the extra time spent trying to impress others, the meals I was too tired to cook but I still cooked, the newspaper column that I just couldn’t stop working with... (然而,这段经历让我看清了为变得出类拔萃所付出的高昂代价:那些为博人眼球额外耗费的时间,那些精疲力竭却仍要强撑下厨的餐食,那项令我欲罢不能的报纸专栏工作……)”及最后一段“At first, it might be a little bit boring to be ordinary. Now, I’ve become much more aware of the beauty of ordinary moments that I am fortunate enough to experience every day: the naughty smiles from my daughter; the funny sounds my cat makes in the middle of the night... (起初,平凡生活或许略显平淡。现在,我更加意识到我有幸每天都能经历的平凡时刻的美好:女儿调皮的微笑;我的猫在半夜发出的奇怪的声音……)”可知,作者从自身经历出发,反思“追求特殊”的代价,进而探讨如何培养孩子真正的自信,最后得出结论:接受平凡,享受平凡生活中的美好瞬间。所以,用A项“Why Should We Celebrate Being Ordinary? (为什么我们要庆祝平凡?)”作为本文的题目,与文章主题相符合。故选A项。
C
Chocolate is a popular snack, but the price of it continues to rise. Cocoa from the cacao tree is the basic ingredient of chocolate; the trees thrive in warm and damp climates but are struggling due to increasing aridity — a slow but non-stop drying of the land. This issue extends to producers around the globe, threatening cocoa production and livelihoods of farmers.
Over the past 30 years, more than three-quarters of the Earth’s landmass has become drier. This dryness is a long-term transformation with disastrous consequences for ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods.
Aridity arises from human-driven factors, including greenhouse gas emissions, unsustainable land use, and natural resource degradation. Climate change, primarily caused by fossil fuel consumption and deforestation, increases global temperatures, accelerating evaporation (蒸发) and heightening water shortage — even in regions with moderate rainfall.
Unsustainable land use further intensifies aridity. Practices like deforestation and industrial farming degrade soils, removing them from protective vegetation and essential nutrients. In cocoa-producing regions, deforestation upsets local water cycles and wears away the topsoil. Degraded soils hold less water, deepening drought conditions.
Cocoa is just one crop at risk. Major agricultural zones are also affected. By 2100, up to 5 billion people may live in dry lands, stretching food systems to their limit and forcing migration. Aridity also threatens ecosystems. Wildlife struggles to adapt, and plant species suited to warm and damp conditions fail to survive. Economic losses are overwhelming — Africa saw a 12% GDP decline from 1990 to 2015 due to rising aridity. Governments face additional burdens from sandstorms, wildfires, and water shortages.
While aridity’s effects are severe, they are not entirely changeless. Restoring degraded lands, improving soil health, and adopting sustainable farming practices can help. Efficient water management, investment in renewable energy, and international cooperation are essential in battling aridity.
As chocolate prices hit record highs in early 2025 due to dry conditions in Africa, addressing aridity is a matter of urgency. Beyond saving chocolate, it’s about preserving the planet’s ability to sustain life.
28. What’s the main reason for the rising price of chocolate?
A. The decline of cocoa production. B. The high cost of basic ingredients.
C. The increasing demand for chocolate. D. The shortage of cocoa tree plantations.
29. What do we know about aridity?
A. It is mainly caused by natural factors.
B. It only affects cocoa-producing regions.
C. It has a wide-ranging impact on various aspects.
D. It will disappear if sustainable land use is adopted.
30. Why is Africa’s GDP decline mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To show aridity only causes economic losses in Africa.
B. To prove Africa is the most severely affected by aridity.
C. To criticize Africa lacks effective measures against aridity.
D. To illustrate aridity has a significant influence on economy.
31. Which of the following can fight against aridity?
A. Cutting off water supplies. B. Replacing renewable energy.
C. Promoting soil conservation. D. Practicing industrial farming.
A 29. C 30. D 31. C

New era requires a new vocabulary. Will we still talk about the “mobile” phone when all phones are mobile, or when they are implanted within us?
Technology is everywhere nowadays, especially at work. Some people are really good at using all the cool new tools that keep popping up. They have something called a TQ, or technology quotient. Think of it like a superpower for understanding the latest tech stuff that our great-grandparents would have found really impossible. Having a high TQ means you’re good at using all the cool new things that not everyone knows about yet.
The examples are common and becoming more and more frequent. For the parents it might be a home-school video class. For the brand manager it might be search engine boosting, which helps the brand’s content rank higher in search results. And for the doctor, it might be the role of artificial intelligence in supporting the analysis of a CT scan. TQ tries to quantify our ability to make wise use of present technologies and to quickly adapt, embrace and make use of future creations. This adoption is of great importance from a variety of perspectives, from social to business. One trip into the world of ChatGPT and we can see how the way AI and search interact and operate is changing for just about everyone.
Any Mom or Dad can understand the value of IQ and EQ in predicting the potential for a child’s success. But what about technology? The ability for the child and the teacher to understand, embrace and assimilate technology will be a key aspect of their lives as we speed into the future. We are increasingly defined by technology and our active participation in everything from smartphones to Facebook. It might just be time for the basic human needs of food, water and shelter to include technology too. And when that happens, it just might be a good idea to measure it.
While this shift brings challenges, it’s unstoppable. As TQ rises, it will combine with IQ and EQ, reshaping how we live, work, and learn — turning adaptability with tech into a measurable advantage.
32. What is TQ according to the text?
A. Ability to use new technologies. B. Skill of repairing high-tech products.
C. Talent to follow modern changes. D. Speed of learning new languages.
33. Which of the following people has a high TQ?
A. A doctor who analyzes CT scans with AI assistance.
B. A manager who often uses modern search engines.
C. A grandparent who finds new tech devices challenging.
D. A mom who watches videos of her child’s school life.
34. What does the underlined word “assimilate” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Depend on. B. Take in. C. Lie in. D. Insist on.
35. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Why Are IQ and EQ Important for TQ?
B. What Makes TQ the New Intelligence?
C. How Has TQ Changed in the Modern Era?
D. Where to Start Adapting to TQ Changes?
A 33. A 34. B 35. B

Every day, we speak to and spend time with the people who mean the most to us. However, think about how many people you interact with in a typical week are the ones you wouldn’t consider as close connections. ____36____. In sociology, these are known as our “weak ties”, referred to as such to differentiate them from our strong ties, like close friends and family members.
____37____. For example, if you spoke about your job hunt to a group of close friends, they might only be aware of the same job opportunities as you because you move in the same circles. However, mentioning it to an acquaintance, like a regular waiter, connects you to people outside your own social circle, which can provide unexpected job opportunities.
“Weak ties can serve special functions not served by close ties, including providing access to unique information and resources,” says Susan Sprecher, distinguished professor at Illinois State University. “Additionally, many people interact with more weak ties throughout a day than they do with close ties. ____38____.”
Indeed, weak ties can give us a real mental health boost. A recent study done by Sprecher indicated people with wider connections of weak ties tend to be happier. ____39____. They reported feeling more happiness and greater feelings of belonging on days when they interacted with more classmates than usual.
Given they have such a strong impact on our lives, why not create weak ties? ____40____. Often, this will mean going outside and speaking to people, whether it’s those you pass in the street, who serve you in shops, or with whom you share a class.
A. The research involved students
B. You find yourself in a better mood
C. We just need to engage with other people
D. Weak ties can have a smaller effect than you might think
E. This diverse social network is related with good health and well-being
F. For example, you chat with the guys who regularly serve you at the store
G. Strong ties tend to form closed social groups with limited new information
F 37. G 38. E 39. A 40. C
根据上文“However, think about how many people you interact with in a typical week are the ones you wouldn’t consider as close connections.(然而,想一想在一个典型的星期里,你与之互动的人中有多少是你认为不亲密的人)”可知,上文提到了你认为不亲密的人,可推理出空白处在举例说明那些不亲密的人,与F项“For example, you chat with the guys who regularly serve you at the store(例如,你和经常在商店为你服务的人聊天)”表达的含义一致,故选F项。
根据下文“For example, if you spoke about your job hunt to a group of close friends, they might only be aware of the same job opportunities as you because you move in the same circles. However, mentioning it to an acquaintance, like a regular waiter, connects you to people outside your own social circle, which can provide unexpected job opportunities.(例如,如果你和一群亲密的朋友谈论你的求职,他们可能只知道和你一样的求职机会,因为你们在同一个圈子里。然而,如果你对一个熟人,比如一个经常为你服务的服务员提起这件事,就会把你和你社交圈之外的人联系起来,这可能会提供意想不到的工作机会)”可知,此处是在对比亲密关系和弱连接在信息获取上的不同,与G项“Strong ties tend to form closed social groups with limited new information(牢固的关系往往形成封闭的社会群体,导致新信息有限)”表达的含义一致,通过对比说明弱连接的优势,故选G项。
【38题详解】
根据上文““Weak ties can serve special functions not served by close ties, including providing access to unique information and resources,” says Susan Sprecher, distinguished professor at Illinois State University. “Additionally, many people interact with more weak ties throughout a day than they do with close ties (伊利诺伊州立大学的杰出教授苏珊·斯普雷彻说:“弱连接可以发挥亲密关系无法发挥的特殊功能,包括提供独特的信息和资源。”“此外,许多人一天中与弱连接的互动比与亲密关系的互动更多”)”可知,此处是在说明弱连接的好处,与E项“This diverse social network is related with good health and well-being(这种多样化的社交网络与良好的健康和幸福有关)”表达的含义一致,进一步阐述弱连接带来的积极影响,故选E项。
【39题详解】
根据下文“They reported feeling more happiness and greater feelings of belonging on days when they interacted with more classmates than usual.(他们报告说,在与比平时更多的同学互动的日子里,他们感到更快乐,更有归属感)”可知,此处是在说明研究的对象,与A项“The research involved students(这项研究涉及学生)”表达的含义一致,引出下文对研究结果的描述,故选A项。
根据上文“Given they have such a strong impact on our lives, why not create weak ties?(鉴于它们对我们的生活有如此大的影响,为什么不建立弱连接呢?)”以及下文“Often, this will mean going outside and speaking to people, whether it’s those you pass in the street, who serve you in shops, or with whom you share a class.(通常,这意味着走出去和别人交谈,无论是你在街上遇到的人,在商店里为你服务的人,还是和你一起上课的人)”可知,此处是在说明建立弱连接的方法,与C项“We just need to engage with other people(我们仅仅需要和其他人交往即可)”表达的含义一致,承接上文的问题,引出下文具体的做法,故选C项。

As a symbol of traditional Chinese culture, chopsticks have a history of thousands of years. Usually made of wood or bamboo, they serve as the most common dining tool for Chinese people.
Simple as they look, chopsticks contain profound wisdom. A single stick can never hold food, which teaches us that cooperation and unity matter a lot. Only when two sticks work together can we pick up food easily. Besides, using chopsticks well requires good coordination.

It took a day’s drive, but distance was beside the point. I always enjoyed long journeys in my father’s car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life. Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at.
On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely. I often spent time alone during breaks and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.
As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my desk mate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex’s water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I found we were avoiding each other.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
However, I was assigned to pair up with Alex to design a poster.

Alex proudly introduced that the fantastic picture was drawn by me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, I was assigned to pair up with Alex to design a poster. Reluctantly, we started working together. I was worried that working with Alex would be very difficult because of our previous relationship. But to my surprise, as the work progressed, we found that we shared many common interests. We put a lot of efforts into the drawings and texts, and finally we completed a quite outstanding poster. Alex seemed to forgive me. He appreciated my efforts and began to care about my feelings. The teacher highly praised our work and our classmates were amazed at the picture on the poster.
Alex proudly introduced that the fantastic picture was drawn by me. I smiled shyly but happily as my classmates crowned me and gave me a thumbs-up. Slowly but surely, I started feeling more comfortable in my new school. I made new friends, including Alex, and began to participate in activities in and after classes. By the end of the school year, I had fully adapted to the new environment. Moving to a new town was not only challenging, but it also opened up a world of opportunities and new experiences for me.

A
The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
23. What does Dr. Torres emphasize about the energy transition?
A. The dominance of gas boilers. B. The increase in solar efficiency.
C. The need for higher investment. D. The breakthrough in heat pump technology.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
