It’s said that there is no safer place than the home. There are many reasons why your home seems safe. One is that you are well familiar with the environment. However, accidents can happen anywhere, even at home. According to the UK safety charity The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), around 6,000 people die as a result of home accidents across the UK every year. Among them, home fire is one of the main causes.
In fact, cooking is the leading (主要的) cause of all home fires and fire injuries. Nearly half of reported home fires start in the kitchen. Thanksgiving is the most likely day of the year for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas.
People are the main reason why home cooking fires start. Cooking with no one around is the primary reason for most cooking fires. These days, with more people working or learning at home, they pay less attention to the events in the kitchen. A one-minute exit to deal with other family chores stretches (延续) to five minutes. Other causes of kitchen fires and injuries include people’s wrongly using rice cookers, microwaves and other kitchen appliances (电器用具) and forgetting to turn them off.
Luckily, there are many ways to cook safely every day of the year. For one thing, always stay in the kitchen while cooking. If you must leave the kitchen for a reason, turn off the appliances. Certainly, keeping a fire extinguisher (灭火器) in the kitchen is not just smart but is highly suggested. It helps put out a small fire before the firemen arrive. What else? Never cook if you feel like sleeping. And always practise carefully. Lastly, do what is needed to make sure your kitchen is the safest place at home. Your family’s health and safety depend on it.
32. Why do about 6,000 British people die every year?
A. Because of car accidents. B. Because of kitchen fires.
C. Because of home accidents. D. Because of the environment.
33. What is the second most likely day of the year for kitchen fires?
A. On January 1st. B. On October 31st. C. On November 24th. D. On December 25th.

A. Why kitchen fires happen. B. How to deal with a cooking fire.
C. Why people can’t stay focused while cooking. D. How to use kitchen appliances safely.
35. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Almost all home fires start in the kitchen.

C. Doing some chores while you’re cooking can save time.
D. Being focused and careful is important while you are cooking.
