The population aging has become a serious problem in many countries in the world. How to take good care of the old becomes a big problem . The care homes in London come up with an amazing way to stop old people from feeling lonely—giving them hens to look after.
The project is dreamed up by a local charity (慈善机构) to reduce loneliness and improve happiness among the old. It’s also used to help patients with dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Workers in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said, “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. I’m enjoying the creative activity, and it feels great to have done something useful. ”
Wendy Wilson, a care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to take up the project, said, “People really welcome the idea of the project. We are looking forward to the advantages and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said, “We are happy to take part in the project. It will really help bring our people together through a shared interest and creative activities. ”
There are now 700 old people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the northeast. And now the charity is working hard to raise money for the project across the country.
20. What does the underlined word “them” refer to?
A. care homes B. old people C. patients

B. They are in the same community.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了伦敦养老院为缓解老人孤独感,发起了一项让老人照看母鸡的项目,并阐述了该项目的目的、参与者反馈及推广情况。
【20题详解】
第一段提到“giving them hens to look after”,结合前文“stop old people feeling lonely”以及本句的主语逻辑,这里的“them”指代的是被给予母鸡去照顾的对象,即“old people(老年人)”。
【21题详解】
第二段明确指出:“The project is dreamed up by a local charity…to reduce loneliness and improve happiness among the old.”,该项目的目的是减少孤独感并提高幸福感。虽然文中提到药物使用量减少,但这只是结果而非主要目的。
【22题详解】
根据上下文,“dementia”被解释为“a serious illness of the mind(一种严重的精神疾病)”,且与老年人护理相关。在医学常识中,这对应中文的“痴呆”(如老年痴呆症)。
【23题详解】
根据第三段“I’m enjoying the creative activity”、第四段“People really welcome the idea of the project”以及第五段“We are happy take part in the project”可知,这三个人都表达了对该项目的喜爱和支持。

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government, ” my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was to visit my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.
Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city. However, we should not forget our hometowns where we are from.
24. The good men came and offered help probably because of ________.
A. the villagers’ suggestions
B. the government’s support
C. a school’s practical activity
25. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. the grandmother doesn’t like to live in the city
B. the village is a place of interest for tourists now
C. there will be more fruit production in the village
26. The underlined phrase devoted themselves to is closest in meaning to ________.
A. put much effort into B. prepared much for C. donated money to
27. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. How is a village improved? B. Who are the good men?
C. Why do people come back?
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. A 27. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述作者家乡从前缺水,在政府帮助下修建水利工程,村庄面貌改善、水果增产的故事,呼吁人们不忘故乡。
【24题详解】
第二段提到“They are good men from our government”,说明前来提供帮助的人来自政府,可知是政府给予了支持。
【25题详解】
第四段提到“...a policy was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.”,说明政策鼓励利用河水提高水果产量,由此可知村里的水果产量将会更高。
【26题详解】
第五段提到“Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.”,结合前文,这些人来到村里修建水渠、解决村民难题,为乡村发展付出很多,据此推断短语表达“投入大量精力做某事”,与选项A“put much effort into”同义。
【27题详解】
全文围绕村庄从缺水、水果产量低,到修建水利工程、环境改善、水果增产的变化展开,介绍村庄是如何得到改善的,所以“How is a village improved?”为最佳标题。

My name is Peter. I come from a small village, close to New York. I’ve been crazy about Chinese history and culture. So I learned Putonghua in the university and I am good at speaking it.
Three years ago, I came to China. I am an English teacher in a middle school in Suzhou, a city in East China. Now I am used to the life here except one thing—the language, Suzhou dialect (方言).
When I talk with older people, they prefer to speak Suzhou dialect. It is famous for its soft words and is known as the soft dialect, which sounds very musical and pleasing. But it is quite different from Putonghua. Putonghua has only four tones (声调), while there are no less than seven in Suzhou dialect. Besides, the differences between Suzhou dialect and Putonghua go far beyond (超过) tones and pronunciation. There is rich information about the history and culture of Suzhou in its dialect. Apart from that, some pieces of slang (俚语) and expressions just don’t sound the same in Putonghua.
I made a lot of mistakes when communicating with Suzhou people here. However hard it is, I am already on the way to becoming a native (母语的) speaker, speaking like a local of Suzhou.
33. Peter has been crazy about Chinese ________.
34. The writer came to ________ three years ago.
35. Suzhou dialect is famous for its ________ and is known as the soft dialect
36. There is rich ________ about the history and culture of Suzhou in its dialect.

根据后文时间状语“when she was 17 to teach in the middle school in Huaping”可知事情发生在过去要用一般过去时,所以要用“move”的过去式“moved”。故填moved。
【47题详解】
句意:在那里人们的帮助下,她得到了必要的治疗。根据前文“Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment.”及后文“she got the necessary treatment”可推测是她在他人的帮助下得到了治疗,用词组“with the help of”表示“在……
故填up。
【51题详解】
句意:由于她的努力,到目前为止,已有1800多名来自贫困家庭的女孩进入了大学。根据后文“than”可知此处应填所给单词比较级。故填more。
【52题详解】
句意:在她的影响下,她的许多学生选择去贫困地区教书。根据前文“have”并分析句子结构可知此处时态为现在完成时,要用“have done”。所以要用所给单词的现在分词。故填chosen。
