Old doors, run-down buildings, rusty (生锈的) machines…These are what you might see at an old industrial (工业的) area. But in China, many of these places have changed.
Shougang Industrial Park in Beijing is now a popular culture and sports center. But in the past, it was a steel factory built in 1919. Once, 60,000 workers made over 10 million tons of iron and steel there. To help the environment, the factory slowly produced less steel from 2005 until it closed in 2010.
With the government’s help, the old factory has become new again. Now, there are cafes, bookstores, hotels, and offices in its old buildings. Self-driving cars are tested there. Xu Zhaolin, 24, often visits the park. “It’s hard to believe this was once a steel factory,” he said, “It feels like a science fiction game.”
Another example is the old Xinyin Printing Factory in Guiyang. It was built in 1950 and was once a large state-owned (国营的) printing factory. After closing, it was turned into a popular cultural and creative place called “Xinyin 1950”. Now, it’s a hot spot for young people and visitors. People can still see old printing machines from many years ago there. The factory also shows many old memories of Guiyang, like photos and things from the past. This helps young people understand the city’s history better.
Old factories across China tell the story of Chinese manufacturing (制造业). Protecting and reusing these places helps cities grow in new ways, according to People’s Daily.
24. What was Shougang Industrial Park in Beijing before it changed?

In recent years, EVs (electric vehicles) have become popular around the world. People choose EVs because they care more about the environment, fuel (燃料) prices are rising, and technology is getting better. Many countries are encouraging people to use EVs to help reduce air pollution and fight climate change.
Electric vehicles run on electricity instead of gasoline (汽油) or diesel (柴油). This means they do not produce harmful gases, which is a big reason why governments want people to use electric cars instead of traditional ones.
Many car companies, such as Tesla, Nissan, and BMW, are making different kinds of electric cars. These cars have better batteries that last longer, charge faster, and have new technology like self-driving.
However, some people are still not sure about buying electric vehicles. They worry about finding charging (充电) stations, the high cost at the beginning, and how long the battery can last. To help with these problems, many governments give money back through tax cuts or discounts, so EVs can be cheaper for everyone.
As technology improves, the future of electric vehicles looks bright. Experts think that by 2030, many cars on the road will be electric. This will help keep the air clean and the planet healthy. Using electric vehicles is an important step to a better future. It shows we care about protecting the Earth for future generations.

In recent years, more and more visitors have come to visit the Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring (月牙泉) Scenic Spot (景区) in Dunhuang. With more visitors, there is also more trash. To keep the place clean, the scenic spot started a fun activity called “Exchange Trash for Gifts”. It is a meaningful and educational idea.
How does it work? Visitors can get a trash bag from the workers, pick up the trash around the site, and then exchange the trash for small gifts, such as key chains and fridge magnets (冰箱贴) for free. The activity begins at 8:30 a. m. every day, and one hour later, visitors can exchange gifts.
Mrs. Yang is a visitor from Tianjin. She had a great time at the scenic spot with her child. Her child is excited to pick up trash for gifts. She thinks the activity is educational. “It teaches children that they should not throw trash everywhere. Trash should be put in the right place. Everyone should take action to protect the environment,” she says.
Another reason for holding the activity is to reduce the pressure of cleaners in the scenic spot. Wang Keshou, a member of the cleaners, feels happy seeing a lot of visitors helping pick up rubbish. “This activity has largely helped in my work. To provide a good environment for tourists, we had to do the cleaning till three o’clock in the morning before. But now the condition is much better,” he says.
In this activity, many people work together. They help to clean the place. The cleaners’ job becomes easier. The environment becomes better. This is the power of working together. A. Practice makes perfect. B. It’s never too old to learn. C. Many hands make light work.

A. A steel factory. B. A cultural center. C. A printing factory.
25. From Xu Zhaolin’s words, we can infer that ________ .
A. he doesn’t like the changes B. he is surprised by the changes C. he used to work in the factory
26. Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word“spot” in Paragraph 4?

Electric Vehicles
Paragraph 1:
