Every winter many people in Northeast China travel to Sanya to get away from the cold weather. However, Li Yanhua is different from them. She travels over 4, 000 kilometres to cultivate new soybean varieties (大豆品种) with her team.
Li is a soybean expert. For more than 30 years, she has cultivated 17 soybean varieties. She said, “It usually takes 10 to 12 years to cultivate new soybean varieties.” To make the period shorter, almost every year after the autumn harvest ( 收获),she takes seeds to Hainan for planting. In China, soybean planting has a history of around 5,000 years. And Heilongjiang is the largest soybean planting province. In 2024, Heilongjiang used more than 4.6 million hectares (公顷) of land to plant soybeans.“My family have grown soybeans for many years, but I never thought I would spend most of my life studying them,” Li smiled. Twenty years ago, life was very different from life today. People lived in small houses and walked or rode bikes to work. Children played outside with friends after school. Families usually ate dinner together.
Today, life is faster and busier. Many families have moved to bigger flats or houses. People drive cars or take buses, but some still ride bikes— especially on their way to work. Children now spend more time on their phones and computers, and many of them don’t know their neighbours very well.
Is modern life better? The answer is not simple. Some changes have made our lives more comfortable. We have better medical care, longer holidays, and more ways to learn. But other changes have made us feel more stressed and more alone.
In fact, every change has two sides. The same new road that helps us reach the city faster also cuts through farmland. The phone lets us talk to friends far away, but it also stops us from talking to people nearby. So the question is not whether life is “better”, but how we use each change.
43. What was children’s life like twenty years ago?
A. They seldom had dinner with their parents.
B. They played outside with friends after school.
C. They played on phones or computers.
D. They lived very far from school.
44. What does the underlined word “it” refer to (指的是)?
A. The new road. B. The phone. C. The change. D. The city.
45. What can we learn from the text?
A. We should not change our life.
B. Modern life is better than before in every way.
C. Every change has two sides; how we use it matters.
D. Twenty years ago, life was perfect.
D
These days, many people in big cities often have a cup of coffee to start their day. People in Gaixin, a small village in Yunnan, also do the same. There is even a coffee centre in the village. Visitors can take lessons in the centre and learn how to make coffee.
Years ago, Gaixin was just a small village in Yunnan. Most people here made a living by feeding animals and farming. In 2023, the village worked out a seed-to-cup plan. It hoped villagers would join in the coffee industry. The plan really worked. More and more coffee shops appeared there. Villagers found jobs in the shops and had a better life. On May 18th, a large coffee park opened in Gaixin. Many visitors from all over the country went to the park. They tasted coffee beans and learned to turn them into drinks by themselves.
Wei Xiaolin, from Gaixin, was a 20-year-old student in Kunming. When she heard that there would be a coffee park in her hometown, she was excited. Wei wanted to get a job in the coffee park because she thought it was interesting and she wanted to work near home. At that time, Wei didn’t know much about coffee. Now she can not only learn about different coffee beans but also make different coffee drinks. She hopes more visitors will come to Gaixin and learn about its coffee culture.
From a farming village to a coffee village, Gaixin’s transition (转变) shows that coffee brings economic growth to the village. Gaixin is becoming better and better.
46. What can visitors do in the coffee centre in Gaixin?
A. Feed animals. B. Learn farming skills.
C. Take coffee-making lessons. D. Buy books at a low price.
47. How did most people in Gaixin make a living years ago?
A. By fishing. B. By coffee-making.

48. Why did Wei Xiaolin want to get a job in the coffee park?
A. Because she knew a lot about coffee.
B. Because she wanted to work far from home.
C. Because she thought it was boring but well-paid.
D. Because she thought it was interesting and close to home.
49. What does Gaixin’s transition show?
A. Coffee is bad for people’s health.
B. Coffee makes the village more polluted.
C. Coffee brings economic growth to the village.
D. Coffee makes the villagers less hardworking.

As the world’s largest real-time ticketing system, 12306 serves over 700 million users. The “super brain” behind this system is Shan Xinghua, a leading railway researcher. In 1996, Shan joined a new team with the task of creating a national ticketing system. Over the years, she has led the system through several big events.
The system was put into use in 2011, and it faced its biggest challenge during the 2012 Spring Festival travel rush. It broke down several times because of the heavy traffic. Faced with this problem, Shan told her team, “We must find a way, no matter how difficult it is.” Working around the clock, they successfully improved the system, allowing it to deal with over 1.4 billion daily visits and doubling its daily ticket sales capacity (能力).
In 2017, Shan and her team started the e-ticket reform (改革) in Hainan. Passengers could enter the station through facial scanning (面部扫描). Shan found the slow speed was the most serious problem with the system. Then Shan and her team spent several months developing a new facial recognition system. With it, passengers can pass through the ticket gate in about 1.5 seconds.
Shan said, “Technology should serve society and improve people’s lives.” To make travel more convenient, Shan and her team always listen to passengers’ voices. They hope to improve their services and satisfy more people.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a famous British writer. Last year, people around the world celebrated the 250th anniversary (周年庆) of her birth.
Austen grew up in a small village in England. She loved reading and writing from a young age. At that time, women were expected to marry rich men. They could not have control of their own money until 1870. They had no right to vote (投票) until 1918.
Austen never married and wrote six novels. Her books talk about men and women’s roles, power, education and marriage from a woman’s point of view. In Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet refuses to marry a man who she does not respect. In Emma, the main character makes mistakes when she tries to help her friends find love. These stories are not just about love stories. They ask serious questions: Should women marry for money? Can they choose their own future? The main characters in the stories are brave and independent.
Because her stories talk about timeless problems and ideas, Austen’s novels are still popular today. Film producers have made her novels into over 70 films and TV shows. Jane Austen has proved that the world you live in doesn’t limit (限制) you, but your choices do.

【答案】例文:
I Have Changed a Lot
Time goes by quickly. My life has changed a lot in the past two years. Let me show you my changes.
I used to be shy and quiet, and I seldom talked in public. The most important change is that I have become more outgoing. I still remember our school English speech contest. I wanted to join but felt scared. My English teacher encouraged me. I practiced every day and took part in it. After that, I turned braver.
I hope my life will become better and better.
