W: Doctor Spencer, thanks for joining our program today.
M: It’s my pleasure.
W: So, what exactly are scientists at your company doing?
M: We’re developing a tool to help blind people to see again. I’m talking about people who lost their sight because of an accident.
W: So, tell us about the tool you’re working on now.
M: Well, it uses a computer chip in special glasses. We start by putting the chip in a blind person’s eyes. The chip is very, very small of course. And the glasses have a very small video camera inside.
W: So, how do the computer chip and glasses work together?
M: Well, a blind person puts on the glasses and looks at something. For example, this pen. First, the video camera in the glasses takes a picture of the pen. Then the camera sends the picture to the computer chip in the person’s eyes.
W: And then the person can see the pen.
M: Exactly, this whole process happens very quickly of course.
W: Wow! With the help of this tool, can a blind person be able to see as well as a normal one?
M: No. They won’t have perfect vision, but they will be able to see many things. This tool is still new, but for many of the people in our study, it’s changed their lives.

C. Making sure the event goes as planned.
B 19. A 20. C
W: Hi, everyone. I want to share with you what it’s like to organize a school music festival. Many think it’s just about the fun, but behind the scenes, it’s a huge test of our skills. First, I meet with the teacher in charge to confirm the overall schedule and key tasks for the day. Then I check in with all the different teams — stage, sound, and security — to make sure everyone is on the same page. Sometimes, the audio equipment has issues or a performer is running late, so I have to solve these problems on the spot. When all the preparations are finally set, my main job begins: ensuring the entire event flow and handling any unexpected situations. The biggest challenge is to keep everything running smoothly. After the festival, I help clean up the venue, thank every volunteer, and then finally go home to rest. It’s an incredibly long and tiring day, but I love creating this unforgettable memory for our entire grade.

My earliest memory starts with me crying. Mom would take out a sheet of wrapping paper. “Kan,” she said as she folded it. “Laohu.” A little paper tiger appeared on the table. I stopped crying and laughed. This was Mom’s magic.
When I was ten, school life became unbearable. I came home one evening and pushed away my Chinese dinner, “We should eat American food.”
Dad tried to reason. “A lot of families cook Chinese sometimes.”
“We are not other families.” I looked at him. “Other families don’t have Moms who don’t belong.”
Mom looked at me, confused. “Bu haochi?”
“English,” I said, raising my voice. “Speak English.”
She tried to speak but stopped.
I packed all the paper animals in a shoebox and hid it under my bed. I refused to answer any of Mom’s questions in Chinese. Eventually, she fell silent.
Years later, Mom lay in a hospital bed. She died when my plane was somewhere over Nevada.
Dad aged rapidly afterward. The house was too big for him and had to be sold. My girlfriend Susan and I went to help him pack.
Susan found the shoebox. “Your Mom was an amazing artist,” she exclaimed. I reached for the paper tiger I had once loved. But it was too fragile and unfolded itself.
I froze. The paper was filled with Chinese characters. I hurriedly took the letter downtown, where I knew the Chinese tour buses stopped. With a tourist’s help, I read Mom’s words: “Son, we haven’t talked in a long time. I know you don’t like your Chinese eyes, but can you understand how much joy your very existence brought to me? When I made the first paper animals and you laughed, I felt there were no worries in the world. Son, why won’t you talk to me?”
The tourist handed the paper back. I could not bear to look into her face.
Following the wrinkles, I refolded the paper into Laohu. Cradling him in my arms, we began the walk home.
24. What did the mother do to stop her child crying?
A. She told him a joke. B. She did a magic show.
C. She created a paper tiger. D. She bought him a new toy.
25. Why did the author reject Chinese food at age ten?
A. He wanted to fit in. B. He disliked the taste.
C. He had a quarrel with his mom. D. He longed for independence.
26. Why did the author take the letter in the shoebox downtown?
A. He didn’t like the Chinese characters in the letter.
B. He planned to take a bus to look for his late mother.
C. Local guides there were good at folding paper tigers.
D. Tourists there could explain the Chinese writing on the paper.
27. What does the author’s action in the last paragraph symbolize?
A. An attempt to escape the past.
B. A refusal to accept his identity.
C. A recognition for his artistic talent.
D. A desire to reconnect his cultural roots.
C 25. A 26. D 27. D

根据第一段中的“Mom would take out a sheet of wrapping paper. ‘Kan,’ she said as she folded it. ‘Laohu.’ A little paper tiger appeared on the table. I stopped crying and laughed.(妈妈会拿出一张包装纸。“看,”她一边折它一边说,“老虎。”一只小纸老虎出现在桌子上。我停止了哭泣,笑了起来)”可知,母亲是折出了一只纸老虎,让孩子停止哭泣。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“When I was ten, school life became unbearable. I came home one evening and pushed away my Chinese dinner, ‘We should eat American food.’(当我十岁时,学校生活变得无法忍受。一天晚上我回到家,推开了我的中式晚餐,“我们应该吃美国食物。”)”以及第四段中的“I looked at him. ‘Other families don’t have Moms who don’t belong.’(我看着他。“其他家庭没有不属于这里的妈妈。”)”可知,作者十岁时因学校生活难以忍受、在意自己与同伴的差别,想和“其他家庭”一样,即,他想融入周围环境。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中的“I hurriedly took the letter downtown, where I knew the Chinese tour buses stopped. With a tourist’s help, I read Mom’s words (我匆忙地把那封信带到市中心,我知道那里的中国旅游大巴会停靠。在一名游客的帮助下,我读到了妈妈的话)”可知,作者去市中心是因为那里的游客能帮他解释纸上的中文。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Following the wrinkles, I refolded the paper into Laohu. Cradling him in my arms, we began the walk home.(顺着那些褶皱,我把那张纸重新折成老虎。把它抱在我的怀里,我们开始往家走)”可知,作者顺着母亲的折痕重新把它折成纸老虎并带它回家,象征着他接纳自己的文化身份、渴望重新连接自己的文化根脉。
C
Scientists are advancing brain-computer interface (BCI) technology with a breakthrough system that translates inner speech into audible words. Developed by US researchers, this “thought decoder (解码器)” achieved 74% accuracy in converting the imagined speech of four paralyzed volunteers into sound.
Unlike earlier BCIs, which relied on brain signals from attempted speech or writing, the new device directly interprets neural patterns linked to phonemes (speech units), aiming to restore fluent communication for those with speech or motor disabilities.
The system works by implanting sensors in the motor cortex (运动皮层), the brain region controlling movement, including speech. As volunteers think of words, machine learning algorithms (算法) analyze neural activity to identify phoneme patterns and reconstruct sentences. Stanford neuroscientist Benyamin Meschede-Krasa explains, “If you just have to think about speech instead of actually trying to speak, it’s potentially easier and faster.”
Researchers discovered overlapping brain signals between attempted and imagined speech, but the system could distinguish them through probability calculations. For example, it recognized 125,000 words by linking frequent phoneme combinations. “These patterns are a similar but smaller version of attempted speech activity,” notes Stanford’s Frank Willett, adding, “We decoded them well enough to prove the principle, but not as well as attempted speech.”
There’s still a long way to go here, and the BCI often fell far short of that 74% maximum accuracy rating. However, by utilizing upgraded implant technology and mapping more of the brain for thought cues, the researchers are confident that the system can be quickly improved over the next few years.
Another issue to overcome is the potential for translating, logging, and speaking out inner monologues that are intended to be kept private — not something you want in a BCI. Safeguards like thinking of a special password start and stop decoding could be implemented here, the researchers suggest. This concept was trialed in the experiments with 98 percent accuracy.
This follows other progress, such as a recent real-time thought-decoding study (personalized to one individual). “The future of BCIs is bright,” Willett says. “This gives hope that speech BCIs may one day restore communication as fluent and natural as conversational speech.”
28. How does the new BCI system differ from earlier models?
A. It uses external sensors instead of implants.
B. It requires physical movement to generate speech.
C. It relies on brain signals from attempted writing only.
D. It directly decodes neural patterns associated with inner speech.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Benyamin Meschede-Krasa invented the new BCI system.
B. The motor cortex is only responsible for speaking movements.
C. Machine learning plays a key role in linking brain signals to words.
D. The new BCI needs users to silently speak words to generate neural signals.
30. What does the underlined word “overlapping” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Conflicting completely. B. Coexisting partially.
C. Functioning independently. D. Changing constantly.
31. What privacy concern is raised about the BCI system?
A. It stores thoughts without user approval.
B. It might decode unintended private thoughts.
C. It cannot differentiate between multiple users.
D. It requires users to share mental passwords publicly
D 29. C 30. B 31. B
根据第二段中的“Unlike earlier BCIs, which relied on brain signals from attempted speech or writing, the new device directly interprets neural patterns linked to phonemes (speech units), aiming to restore fluent communication for those with speech or motor disabilities.(与早期依赖尝试说话或写字的脑信号的脑机接口不同,新设备直接解读与音素(语音单位)相关的神经模式,旨在为有语言或运动障碍的人恢复流利的交流。)”
根据第三段中的“As volunteers think of words, machine learning algorithms (算法) analyze neural activity to identify phoneme patterns and reconstruct sentences.(当志愿者思考单词时,机器学习算法分析神经活动以识别音素模式并重建句子。)”
根据第四段画线词“overlapping”后面的“but the system could distinguish them through probability calculations(但该系统能够通过概率计算区分它们)”以及“These patterns are a similar but smaller version of attempted speech activity(这些模式是言语活动尝试的类似但规模更小的版本)”可推知,画线词所在的前半句强调尝试说话和想象说话的大脑信号存在部分重合的相似之处,所填词含有“部分重合”之意。
根据第六段中的“Another issue to overcome is the potential for translating, logging, and speaking out inner monologues that are intended to be kept private — not something you want in a BCI.(另一个需要克服的问题是,翻译、记录和说出本应保密的内心独白的潜在可能性——这不是你在脑机接口中想要的。)”
D
A new research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out. “What we’ve learned is that the techniques actors use have a powerful effect on how children handle language and how they perceive themselves,” said Siri Lee of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
The randomized control trial involved hundreds of year 5 pupils — aged nine and ten — at 45 primary schools that had not been “previously exposed to RSC teaching approach.” They were split into target and control groups and asked to write, for example, a message in a bottle as Ferdinand after the shipwreck in The Tempest. The target group was given a 30-minute drama-based activity to accompany the passage.
The results showed that the target group of pupils drew on a wider vocabulary, used words “classed as more complicated or rarer”, and wrote at greater length. They also “appear to be more comfortable writing in role. While control pupils imagine how they themselves would react to being shipwrecked, target children put themselves in the shoes of a literary character and express the character’s emotion”. The Time to Act study also found that while control pupils relied on “deserted island conventions” such as palm trees, target pupils were “more expansive giving a broader picture of the sky, the sea and the atmospheric conditions.”
Siri Lee said she had been most surprised by the “emotional literacy that was evident in the target children’s writing” and that they were “more resilient in their writing, more hopeful”. She added: “The emotional understanding was very evident and it is probably related to the rehearsal room process where you are used to trying to imagine your way through. They were comfortable in describing different emotional states and part of what you do in drama is put yourself in different shoes.” The study showed the importance of embedding arts in education, she said.
But could the results be replicated with any old dramatist? Siri Lee said more research would be needed but suggested that the grammar school boy’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a “massive expansion of language into children’s lives”, which was combined with children “using their whole bodies to bring words to life”.
32. Why were the pupils divided into two groups?
A. To illustrate the popularity of RSC. B. To prove the advantage of acting-out.
C. To measure their writing speed. D. To see their understandings of a drama.
33. What did control pupils’ reliance on “deserted island conventions” show?
A. Their preference for big words. B. Their casual style of writing.
C. Their weakness in description. D. Their ignorance of small details.
34. What can be inferred about Shakespeare’s use of words?
A. It overshadows that of other dramatists. B. It is overly challenging to students.
C. It enriches children’s daily vocabulary. D. It is definitely scholarship-oriented.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Acting Out Shakespeare: A Stone, Two Birds B. Follow in Shakespeare’s Footsteps
C. Shakespeare: Language Strugglers’ Cure-all D. Shakespeare: Easier Said Than Done
B 33. C 34. C 35. A

Can’t find your keys-again? Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) makes people tend to put things in random places and not remember where they put them. This problem is probably familiar to anyone whose phone is missing a dozen times a day or who can’t find the TV remote until ten minutes after a favorite show has begun. ____36____ Here is some advice about how to cope with the situation caused by misplacing things.
When you put something down, say its location. ____37____ You’d say, “I’m setting my mouse to the right of my computer.” And saying that, either in your mind or out loud, focuses your attention on where you put it, upping the odds that you’ll remember its location later.
Invest in technology. There are many tools designed to keep track of items. ____38____ There are also objects you can put in your wallet or purse that will ring when you press a button on either another object or a phone app.
____39____ That might mean placing a basket by your front door where you drop your keys and wallet immediately upon entering your home or distributing one drawer as the scissors drawer.
前文提到“Can’t find your keys - again? Attention - deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) makes people tend to put things in random places and not remember where they put them. This problem is probably familiar to anyone whose phone is missing a dozen times a day or who can’t find the TV remote until ten minutes after a favorite show has begun. (又找不到钥匙了?注意缺陷多动障碍(ADHD)会让人随意乱放东西,然后不记得放在哪里。对于那些一天找不到手机十几次,或者在喜欢的节目开始十分钟后才找到电视遥控器的人来说,这个问题可能很熟悉。)”可知,前文描述了找不到东西这种情况很常见。C选项“It’s a common occurrence and certainly annoying. (这是常有的事,而且肯定很烦人。)”对前文进行总结,说明这种情况既常见又令人烦恼。
【37题详解】
根据前文“When you put something down, say its location. (当你放下某样东西时,说出它的位置。)”可知,选项承接上文,解释了说出物品位置这种方法的本质。G选项“One way to be mindful of where your things are is to express where you put them in words. (留意你的东西在哪里的一种方法是用语言表达你把它们放在了哪里。)”。
根据前文“Invest in technology. There are many tools designed to keep track of items. (投资一些技术。有很多用于追踪物品的工具。)”以及根据后文“There are also objects you can put in your wallet or purse that will ring when you press a button on either another object or a phone app. (还有一些物品,你可以放在钱包或手袋里,当你按下另一个物品或手机应用程序上的按钮时,它们就会响。)”可知,介绍了一种利用技术追踪物品的具体方式,即使用追踪器,与前后文关于利用技术追踪物品的内容相契合。选项D选项“Attach a tracker to what you often misplace, and it will guide you to its location. (在你经常乱放的东西上附上一个追踪器,它会指引你找到它的位置。)”符合语境。
【39题详解】
根据后文“That might mean placing a basket by your front door where you drop your keys and wallet immediately upon entering your home or distributing one drawer as the scissors drawer. Then, at the end of the day, scan the areas where you’ve been, find the items that need to be taken back home, and return them to their spots. (这可能意味着在你家前门放一个篮子,一进家门就把钥匙和钱包放在里面,或者指定一个抽屉专门放剪刀。然后,在一天结束时,扫视你去过的地方,找到需要带回家的物品,并把它们放回原处。同样的建议也适用于你的办公室和汽车等地方。)”可知,本段描述了一系列固定放置物品的日常习惯。A选项“Set up a routine. (建立一种日常惯例。)”能够概括这部分内容,作为小标题合适。
【40题详解】
根据后文“But if you keep beating yourself up about it, you’re less likely to be able to focus and keep track of your possessions. So, remember to be kind to yourself. (但如果你一直为此自责,你就不太可能集中注意力并留意你的物品。所以,记得要善待自己。)”可知,选项与后文形成转折关系,先表明对乱放东西感到沮丧是可理解的,再通过转折说明不应过度自责。F选项“It’s certainly understandable if you’re frustrated with your tendency to misplace things. (如果你对自己乱放东西的倾向感到沮丧,这当然是可以理解的。)”,符合语境。

62. competitive
63. over##against
64. which 65. strengths
in the years to come是固定表达,意为“在未来的几年里”,动词不定式to come作后置定语修饰years,表示“即将到来的”。
not only...but (also)...
an upper hand over/against sb/sth是固定搭配,意为“相对于……

66. 你校英文报Career Outlook栏目正在征稿,征文题目为“What Counts Most in Making Career Choices?”。

What Counts Most in Making Career Choices?
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A Possible Version:
What Counts Most in Making Career Choices?
When it comes to career choices, I rank personal passion first, practical job prospects second, and personal aptitude last.
Passion is the core of long-term career development. Without lasting enthusiasm, we cannot overcome difficulties. Job prospects come next, as they ensure stable income, but should not overshadow inner devotion. Aptitude is placed last, because hard work can make up for limited natural gifts if we stay devoted.
Only by prioritizing passion while balancing employment needs and personal conditions can we choose a satisfying career.

Mrs. Henderson’s neat rose garden was the pride of the neighborhood, and she took great care to maintain it. Next door, Mr. Patel and his family moved in six months ago, bringing with them a love for gardening that Mrs. Henderson initially appreciated.
One day, Mrs. Henderson noticed Mr. Patel’s young son, Aryan, playing near the fence that separated their properties. She watched as the little kid reached through the fence and picked a few rosebuds (玫瑰花蕾) from her roses. Mrs. Henderson’s heart sank. These roses were special —they had been planted by her late husband.
Without thinking, she opened the window and shouted, “Put that back, young man! Those are my roses!”
Aryan was frightened, dropping the rosebuds and bursting into tears. Mrs. Henderson felt a bit of guilt but remained firm. “Go tell your father to keep his son out of my garden!”
Mr. Patel heard the noise and came over. He turned to Mrs. Henderson. “What’s the matter, Mrs. Henderson?”
“He took my roses!” Mrs. Henderson pointed to the rosebuds. “You need to teach your child some respect.”
Mr. Patel’s expression hardened. “I’ll handle my son, but a child’s curiosity is natural.”
Mrs. Henderson crossed her arms. “Natural or not, it’s my property. If you can’t control your child, maybe you shouldn’t have moved here.”
The words hung in the air, sharp and unforgiving. Mr. Patel’s face turned red with anger. “You're being unreasonable. I’ll make sure Aryan stays away, but I won’t tolerate your cruelty.”
With that, he walked away, Aryan still weeping in his arms. Mrs. Henderson closed the window, feeling a mix of regret and firmness. She knew she had overreacted, but the thought of her roses being damaged was too much to bear.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150个左右;
The next morning, Mrs. Henderson woke to find a small package on her doorstep.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mr. Patel opened the door, where stood Mrs. Henderson.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Mrs. Henderson woke to find a small package on her doorstep. Inside was a beautifully crafted wooden plate, marked with the words “Sorry for the trouble” and some fresh rosebuds. A note attached read: “Mrs. Henderson, I hope this makes up for yesterday. Aryan and I want to be good neighbors. — Mr. Patel.” Mrs. Henderson’s heart softened. She had been so focused on her roses that she had forgotten the bigger picture — community and understanding. That afternoon, she went next door with a plate of freshly baked cookies.
Mr. Patel opened the door, where stood Mrs. Henderson. Mrs. Henderson smiled. “I brought this as a peace offering. I apologize for yesterday. I shouldn’t have spoken like that.” Mr. Patel responded, “Thank you. I appreciate it.” They decided to find a way to share the garden without any misunderstandings. Mrs. Henderson would plant roses along the fence, while Mr. Patel could plant as he wished on his side. Mrs. Henderson realized fences were meant to separate, but gardens and neighbors were meant to bring people together. The roses were a bridge, not a barrier.

Then, at the end of the day, scan the areas where you’ve been, find the items that need to be taken back home, and return them to their spots. The same advice applies to places like your office and car.
Take a breath. If you’ve misplaced something, give your brain a minute or two. ____40____ But if you keep beating yourself up about it, you’re less likely to be able to focus and keep track of your possessions. So, remember to be kind to yourself.
A. Set up a routine.
B. Keep a written log.
C. It’s a common occurrence and certainly annoying.
D. Attach a tracker to what you often misplace, and it will guide you to its location.
E. Here are some measures that can make you put something back where it belongs.
F. It’s certainly understandable if you’re frustrated with your tendency to misplace things.
G. One way to be mindful of where your things are is to express where you put them in words.
