When I wrote my first book three years ago, the words came naturally. Eight weeks of even rhythm (节奏) and it was finished with ease. So when I sat down to write my second book, I expected the same effortless flow. Instead, I found myself staring at a blinking (闪烁的) typing line that seemed to flash with quiet accusation. I couldn’t begin.
Day after day, I repeated the same routines. I set up the perfect workspace, blocked out hours for writing, and reread old pages that had once made me proud. None of it helped. For a while, I blamed myself, mistaking my procrastination (拖延) for laziness or lack of organization. Still, the familiar motions kept me busy while the work itself remained still.
Eventually, exhaustion softened my stress, and I stopped pushing. What if the resistance was trying to tell me something? I opened my journal and started writing — not about the book, but about why I couldn’t write it. The truth that poured out was simple and childlike: What if this book isn’t as good as the first? What if readers decide a woman like me has already said everything she knows? Beneath the delay, I found fear — not of the work, but of judgment. Procrastination had become a safety net; staying still meant avoiding being seen and possibly found lacking.
So I tried something different. I set a timer for five minutes and wrote whatever came. A sentence, half an idea, a small whisper of a scene. My hand moved first, and my mind followed. Piece by piece, those small beginnings grew into the book I had been afraid to start.
By the time I finished, I saw procrastination differently. It was never merely delay. It was a quiet talk between the part of me that wants to try and the part that fears the fall. What I once called wasted time was, in truth, the stillness before courage — the quiet reward of writing.
4. What happened when the author started writing her second book?
A. She quit the former routines. B. She felt a great sense of progress.
C. She found it hard to get started. D. She finished it with ease like before.
5. What does the underlined phrase “safety net” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. A way to succeed quickly. B. A tool for finishing work on time.
C. A protection to escape failure. D. A method to improve writing skills.
6. How did the author manage to restart her writing?
A. By taking one step at a time. B. By reflecting on the first book.
C. By focusing on special details. D. By following a flexible schedule.
7. What does the author mainly want to tell us through the story?
A. Writing a book requires a perfect plan. B. Stillness can be part of creativity.
C. Fear of failure can be stopped by force. D. Procrastination is just a waste of time.
C 5. C 6. A 7. B
根据第一段“Instead, I found myself staring at a blinking (闪烁的) typing line that seemed to flash with quiet accusation. I couldn’t begin.(可恰恰相反,我只能盯着闪烁的输入光标,那光标仿佛在无声地指责我。我无法动笔。)”可知,作者在写第二本书时感觉很难开始动笔。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Beneath the delay, I found fear — not of the work, but of judgment. Procrastination had become a safety net; staying still meant avoiding being seen and possibly found lacking.(在拖延的表象之下,我看见了内心的恐惧 —— 不是害怕写作这件事本身,而是害怕他人的评判。拖延成了一个safety net;停滞不动,就可以避免被他人审视,免得被发现自己有所欠缺。)”可知,作者害怕他人评判,拖延让作者保持原地不动,这样就可以避免被别人审视、被发现不足、遭遇失败。由此可知,safety net指“逃避失败的保护手段”。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“So I tried something different. I set a timer for five minutes and wrote whatever came. A sentence, half an idea, a small whisper of a scene. My hand moved first, and my mind followed. Piece by piece, those small beginnings grew into the book I had been afraid to start.(于是我尝试换一种方式。我定了五分钟计时器,想到什么就写什么。一句话、半截想法、一个隐约浮现的场景。先动笔,思绪随后跟上。一点一滴,这些微小的开端,慢慢汇成了那本我曾经不敢动笔的书。)”可知,作者是通过一步一步从小处着手,逐步重启了写作。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“What I once called wasted time was, in truth, the stillness before courage — the quiet reward of writing.(那些我曾经视作被浪费的时光,实际上,是勇气来临前的沉静 —— 这是写作给予的安静馈赠。)”
C
Can music help you concentrate at work? Researchers from the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff conducted a new study, and it has some interesting results.
The research examined the ability of 25 people, aged 18 to 30, to remember information while listening to various sounds. In one task they had to remember a list of eight consonant (辅音) letters, which were read to them.
Participants in the study were tested under three different conditions: in a quiet environment, while listening to music they liked, and while listening to music they didn’t like. The participants generally did better when they were working in silence. The background music seemed to make memorization and recall more difficult. However, scientists also found that listening to music before doing the tests seemed to help concentration.
“Despite describing their self-selected music as more pleasant, their performance was poor, just as it was when they listened to music they disliked,” explained one of the researchers. So, even if you’re listening to music you like, it’ll still get in the way of your work.
This would appear to go against the findings of scientists who have researched what is popularly known as the “Mozart Effect”. This concept was invented by French scientist Dr. Alfred A. Tomatitis in 1991. Tomatitis published a book, Why Mozart?, which described what he believed were the healing powers of listening to Mozart’s music.
He also suggested that Mozart’s music could help brain development. Later experiments suggested it might enhance children’s spatial (空间的) intelligence, leading to a widespread belief that classical music could improve a child’s IQ. The governor of the state of Georgia even once supported spending over $100,000 annually to supply classical CDs to every newborn in the state.
Another study seemed to further contradict the idea that music could help with concentration. The researchers found that surveyed university students mostly preferred studying in silence. Those listening to music preferred instrumental songs, saying that lyrics (歌词) are annoying.
So, if you’re studying for an exam, turn off your music!
8. Under which condition did participants perform best in the University of Wales study?
A. Enjoying their favorite music. B. Listening to disliked music.
C. Playing music after the memory task. D. Working in a quiet environment.
9. What led to the popularity of the “Mozart Effect”?
A. The government’s generous support.
B. Its connection with children’s intelligence.
C. Its power to cure IQ-related diseases.
D. The influence brought by a scientist’s book.
10. Why does the writer mention the survey of university students?
A. To compare ways of using music
B. To prove music’s healing power.
C. To show students’ preference in music.
D. To add evidence against music for focus.
11. What is the author’s attitude to studying to music during exam preparation?
A. Negative. B. Neutral. C. Supportive. D. Uninterested.
D 9. B 10. D 11. A
根据第三段中的“Participants in the study were tested under three different conditions: in a quiet environment, while listening to music they liked, and while listening to music they didn’t like. The participants generally did better when they were working in silence.(研究参与者在三种不同环境下接受测试:安静环境、听喜欢的音乐、听不喜欢的音乐。参与者在安静环境下工作时整体表现更好。)”可知,参与者在安静环境中的表现最好。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中的“He also suggested that Mozart’s music could help brain development. Later experiments suggested it might enhance children’s spatial (空间的) intelligence, leading to a widespread belief that classical music could improve a child’s IQ. (他还提出莫扎特的音乐有助于大脑发育。后续实验表明它或许可以提升儿童的空间智力,这使得人们普遍相信古典音乐能够提高孩子的智商。)”可知,莫扎特效应流行是因为它和儿童智力相关。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段中的“Another study seemed to further contradict the idea that music could help with concentration. The researchers found that surveyed university students mostly preferred studying in silence. Those listening to music preferred instrumental songs, saying that lyrics are annoying.(另一项研究似乎进一步反驳了音乐有助于集中注意力的观点。研究人员发现,受访大学生大多更喜欢在安静环境学习。听音乐的人偏爱纯音乐,称歌词很烦人。)”可知,作者引用大学生调查是为增加论据,证明音乐不利于集中注意力。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第八段中的“So, if you’re studying for an exam, turn off your music!(所以,如果你正在备考,关掉你的音乐!)”

Researchers have developed a robotic hand that can not only move about on its fingertips, but it can also bend its fingers backward, connect and disconnect from a robotic arm and pick up and carry one or more objects at a time, researchers report January 20 in Nature Communications.
“It’s been a dream to design a new hand which departs from human-like hands,” says Aude Billard, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. “It allows people to think out of the box, to rethink what it is to have a hand or finger.”
Billard and her coworkers used a genetic algorithm (算法), which simulated (模拟) how different combinations of robot features would work together. That allowed the team to gradually improve the design and come up with several blueprints for hand-shaped bots that could walk, grasp and carry objects.
When attached to the mechanical arm, the robotic hand could pick up objects like a human hand. But the robot is more flexible. The fingers bend backward just as easily as forward, allowing the robot to hold objects against both sides of its hand at the same time. It can even open a bottle while holding it in place. When the robot was separated from the arm, it was most stable walking on four or five fingers and using one or two fingers for grabbing and carrying things, the team found. The hand disconnected from the robotic arm could use its fingers as legs to move, pick up things and carry them back to the arm.
“The robot could one day aid in industrial inspections of pipes and equipment too small for a human or larger robot to access,” says Gao Xiao, a roboticist now at Wuhan University in China. “It might even work as a prosthetic (假体的) hand though further research is needed to understand how human brains would control and respond to body parts that don’t match human physical structure,” says Billard.
12. What is special about the robotic hand according to Billard?
A. It carries only heavy objects.
B. It exactly copies a human hand.
C. It is helpful for human thinking.
D. It is free from human hand limits.
13. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The limits of the robotic hand.
B. The functions of the robotic hand.
C. The popularity of the robotic arm.
D. The ways to design the robotic hand.
14. What future use may the robotic hand have?
A. To use its fingers to walk. B. To replace all workers.
C. To work in narrow spaces. D. To change human brains.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Fingers as Legs: A Special Robotic Hand
B. Human Hands: The Best Model for Robot Design
C. Genetic Algorithm: A New Tool for Making Arms
D. Robotic Hand: A Helper for Difficult Industrial Jobs
D 13. B 14. C 15. A

10. Why does the writer mention the survey of university students?
A. To compare ways of using music
B. To prove music’s healing power.
C. To show students’ preference in music.
D. To add evidence against music for focus.
11. What is the author’s attitude to studying to music during exam preparation?
A. Negative. B. Neutral. C. Supportive. D. Uninterested.
