A
Every year on October 4th the world comes together for the well-being (福祉) of animals everywhere. This is World Animal Day.
Starting in 1925, the yearly event has become a special chance for everyone who cares about animals to make a difference. In 2022, the theme was “A Shared Planet”. “As we share this Earth with all living things, we can truly make a difference for all animals!” wrote the event’s website.
In the past ten years, China has done much to improve the well-being of domestic (驯养的) and wild animals. The protection of Asian elephants is a good example.
Asian elephants have become endangered because some people hunt them for their ivory (象牙). Asian elephants in China are mostly in Yunnan Province. These wild animals sometimes eat local farmers’ crops. The government has been trying to create a more harmonious relationship between the local people and wildlife. For example, they make rules to stop the ivory trade.
With World Animal Day around the corner, we all can think of more ways to better protect our wild friends. Let’s take action together!
16. What does the underlined word “harmonious” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Serious. B. Friendly. C. Awful. D. Nervous.
17. Why have Asian elephants become endangered according to the passage?
A. Because people caught them for shows. B. Because people hunted them to make medicine.
C. Because people hunted them for ivory. D. Because people kept them as pets.
18. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To ask people to better protect wild animals. B. To ask people to protect local farmers’ crops.

Long long ago, when God first planted a tree in the garden, it was full of energy and kept moving. Then God pulled the tree out and planted it upside down to make sure it stayed in one place. What’s the tree? It’s the baobab tree, also called the monkey bread tree, bottle tree or others.
The baobab tree is a strange-looking tree that grows in Africa and Australia. Just like its name “bottle tree”, it looks like a large bottle. Some grow as tall as an 11-floor building. During the dry season, these trees are standing there without leaves, and look like trunks (树干) sticking up in the air. But when the rainy season comes, leaves appear and then flowers come out. Later the flowers can turn into fruit.
Baobabs are called “the tree of life”, because they can live longer than 1,000 years old. In the dry land, the baobab can hold up to 120,000 liters of water. Thirsty people can drink the water stored in the tree. The fruit, monkey bread, is good to eat. Baobab leaves are a kind of medicine. People can use the bark (树皮) to make paper or cloth. When a baobab gets old, its trunk becomes hollow. An old tree can hold many people. The local people often build their houses inside these trunks. It is such a useful tree that some people could hardly live without it.
19. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By asking a question. B. By showing a story.
C. By singing a song. D. By giving an example.

Traveling alone really shows you what you’re made of and helps you find the inner strength (内心的力量) you didn’t know you have. And it also gives you time to think and learn.
It’s easy to think that traveling alone is lonely (孤独的). Although that may sometimes be true, you’re hardly ever alone. When you travel as a one-person team, you can enjoy the most interesting part of travel—talking with the locals (当地人) and meeting travelers from all over the world.
In fact, traveling to know about the world is not easy. There’s lots of information to look up, tickets to buy, and things like these. And there’s another thing to worry about: Things can and often do go wrong. One of the greatest things about traveling with friends is being able to help each other.
It’s true that traveling with others can give you a sense of safety (安全感). You know that if you get lost or get things lost, there’s someone to hold your hand when you try to tell it to the police in another country.
There’s no right or wrong way to travel. Whether you travel alone or with friends, it’s up to you.

Sometimes in the afternoon, I could even see eagles flying in the sky. However, I can seldom see the eagles and swallows now. The number of the sparrows is getting smaller. Only some of them sing in the morning. Why are there fewer and fewer birds today? First, I think it is because the environment is becoming worse now. For example, they make rules to stop the ivory trade.”
根据“Asian elephants have become endangered because some people hunt them for their ivory (象牙).”

根据文章第1段“Long long ago, when God first planted a tree in the garden, it was full of energy and kept moving. Then God pulled the tree out and planted it upside down to make sure it stayed in one place.”
根据文章第2段“During the dry season, these trees are standing there without leaves, and look like trunks sticking up in the air.”,结合前文“it looks like a large bottle”可知,旱季的猴面包树树干粗壮呈瓶状,没有叶片,只有树干枝桠立在空中,对应图片A的形态。
根据文章第3段“An old tree can hold many people. The local people often build their houses inside these trunks.”

Do you like to travel alone Or do you think it’s better to travel with friends? If you’re still deciding, please read on.
