Filling your cup isn’t easy. We live in an age where exhaustion is worn like a badge, and burnout is celebrated. When you’re a business owner, rest simply doesn’t happen unless you schedule it in.
When I started my business, I was already a mother and a wife, and it took destroying my health for me to learn how to fill my cup. Like many others, I became an entrepreneur (企业家) because I was after flexibility — which is why, when I woke up four years later with a medically-prescribed heart rate monitor and a severe anxiety diagnosis, I knew that everything was about to collapse around me. I handed the business over to one of my managers and walked away from everything I had built. From then on, learning how to fill my cup became the change that brought me to my happily ever after.
Today, I coach small businesses and one of the most important survival strategies I consider a must-have for entrepreneurs is figuring out how to refill your cup. There’s no one-size-fits-all. Some people might love a bubble bath, but others might not. As your needs change, so should the way you refill your cup.
I teach people to rebuild a connection to themselves by paying attention to what they’re really needing. It often appears in the words that follow “I am”. When you start seeing the statement “I am” as a boundary, it changes everything. Take a simple phrase, like “I am tired”. Instead of simply seeing that as a statement, recognize the need behind it — rest. Adjust your day’s agenda to the needs behind those “I am” statements. If you realize you haven’t rested enough, you can postpone office work and take a screen-free walk in nature instead.
These days, I build daily rhythms that keep my cup full. I enjoy using essential oils in my office, walking along the beach, spending time with friends who also run businesses, and sharing family responsibilities with my husband. These practices aren’t luxuries; they are survival strategies that allow me to show up fully for my clients, my family, and myself.
4. Why did the author decide to give up running her business?
A. She preferred a free lifestyle without restrictions.
B. Her wish was to devote more energy to her family.
C. Her health problems forced her to make a change.
D. She intended to work full-time as a professional coach.
5. According to the text, “refill your cup” most probably refers to ________.
A. an escape from reality B. a pursuit of fixed daily routines
C. a focus on social bonds D. a gain in energy and mental well-being
6. What can we learn about “I am” statements in paragraph 4?
A. They urge people to reflect on past plans.
B. They teach people to control their emotions.
C. They allow people to identify their real needs.
D. They help people to express themselves clearly.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Recharging Yourself in a Right Way B. The Power of Positive Thinking
C. Life After Entrepreneurial Burnout D. A Better Way to Organize Your Day
C 5. D 6. C 7. A
根据第二段中“Like many others, I became an entrepreneur (企业家) because I was after flexibility — which is why, when I woke up four years later with a medically-prescribed heart rate monitor and a severe anxiety diagnosis, I knew that everything was about to collapse around me. I handed the business over to one of my managers and walked away from everything I had built.(和许多人一样,我成为企业家是为了追求灵活的生活,这就是为什么四年后我醒来时,身上带着医生开具的心率监测仪,还被确诊患有严重焦虑症,我知道身边的一切都即将崩塌。我把公司交给了我的一位经理,离开了我亲手创立的一切)”可知,是健康问题迫使她做出改变、放弃经营公司。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Today, I coach small businesses and one of the most important survival strategies I consider a must-have for entrepreneurs is figuring out how to refill your cup.(如今我为小企业提供指导,我认为企业家必须掌握的最重要的生存策略之一,就是弄清楚如何refill your cup)”以及第四段中“Adjust your day’s agenda to the needs behind those “I am” statements. If you realize you haven’t rested enough, you can postpone office work and take a screen-free walk in nature instead.(根据这些“I am”表述背后的需求调整你的每日日程。如果你意识到自己休息不足,你可以推迟办公工作,转而放下电子设备去大自然中散步)”可知,“refill your cup”指的是恢复精力、获得精神健康补给。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“I teach people to rebuild a connection to themselves by paying attention to what they’re really needing. It often appears in the words that follow “I am”. When you start seeing the statement “I am” as a boundary, it changes everything. Take a simple phrase, like “I am tired”. Instead of simply seeing that as a statement, recognize the need behind it — rest.(我教人们通过关注自己真正的需求,重建和自我的联结。
A“Recharging Yourself in a Right Way(以正确的方式为自己充电)”适合作为标题。
C
As we explore the ever-changing and continually developing world of artificial intelligence (AI), a curious development has emerged: the creation of a unique language style known as AI-ese. This new way of communication reflects the details of AI-generated content, identifiable by its particular use of everyday language.
The interaction between machine learning and everyday language has resulted in AI systems showing a somewhat formal and balanced tone. In their effort to deliver helpful and informative responses, language models often show a high degree of positive thinking and a habit of providing detailed answers. This leads to longer and more careful replies, unlike the short texts or quick comments that people often make.
Another characteristic of AI communication is its correctness in spelling and grammar, making it almost too perfect and giving away that users might be talking to nan-human being. Additionally, AI’s refusal to deal with certain topics, especially those that involve moral or legal issues, serves as another sign of its artificial nature.
An interesting case study in the vocabulary of AI systems shows certain words, like “delve”, have been overused by AI compared to the Internet at large. But these words are much more common on the African web. This is because large AI companies hire English-speaking workers from African countries, who are open to low pay, to provide human feedback to large language models to train them to become better AI systems.
The result is that AI reflects the language features of its human trainers, blurring (模糊) the lines between AI-produced content and regional English variants. These interactions may have unexpected results, as AI-ese starts to shape how people think about human dialects.
Moreover, the integration (整合) of AI into our physical world continues to advance, with startups exploring wearable technology that works with AI to help users record and remember information from their daily interactions. The emergence of AI devices points to a time when AI-ese will play an integral role in our living experiences, not just online but in the physical world around us.
8. How do AI answers typically differ from human replies?
A. They contain more details. B. They sound less formal.
C. They show less patience. D. They cover more topics.
9. What is the example of “delve” meant to illustrate?
A. Some words are overused on the Internet.
B. African English-speakers accept low pay.
C. AI systems are founded on the African web.
D. AI mirrors its human trainers’ language style.
10. What might be a result of the emergence of AI devices?
A. AI-ese will become part of our lives.
B. AI-ese will enter wearable technology.
C. The physical world will change its role.
D. The physical world will keep advancing.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards AI-ese?
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
A 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第二段中“This leads to longer and more careful replies, unlike the short texts or quick comments that people often make.(这导致了更长、更谨慎的回复,不像人们经常发的简短文本或快速评论)”可知,AI的回答通常比人类的回复包含更多细节。
根据第四段中“This is because large AI companies hire English-speaking workers from African countries, who are open to low pay, to provide human feedback to large language models to train them to become better AI systems.(这是因为大型人工智能公司雇佣来自非洲国家的英语工作者,他们接受低薪,为大型语言模型提供人类反馈,以训练它们成为更好的人工智能系统)”以及第五段中“The result is that AI reflects the language features of its human trainers, blurring (模糊) the lines between AI-produced content and regional English variants.(结果是人工智能反映了其人类训练者的语言特征,模糊了人工智能生成内容与地区英语变体之间的界限)”可知,以“delve”为例是为了说明AI反映了其人类训练者的语言风格。
根据最后一段中“The emergence of AI devices points to a time when AI-ese will play an integral role in our living experiences, not just online but in the physical world around us.(人工智能设备的出现预示着一个时代,那时AI-ese将在我们的生活体验中扮演不可或缺的角色,不仅在网上,而且在我们周围的物理世界中)”可知,AI设备出现的一个结果可能是AI-ese将成为我们生活的一部分。
D
In the animal kingdom, counting skills are known to help grab bigger meals or find safety in group sizes. But clownfish may have uncovered another “value” in numbers: identification.
Despite their cute appearance, clownfish are territorial and aggressive When they spot a member of their own species moving towards their place, they attack, biting and throwing out unwelcome visitors. There are 28 different species of clownfish, however. So how do they actually tell friends from enemies?
Depending on the species, clownfish can have anywhere from zero to three white stripes (条纹). Previous research suggested the fish pay close attention to these markings. In a 2022 study, scientists found clownfish display more aggressive behavior (e.g., running after or biting others) toward fish with vertical (垂直的) stripes compared with those with horizontal stripes.
This time around, ecologist Hayashi and colleagues assumed the fish could actually count those stripes. They placed 50 young, lab-raised common clownfish — which display the typical orange pattern like “Nemo” (a clownfish with three stripes from the film Finding Nemo) — into individual water tanks. Then, the researchers added other clownfish species, which had white stripes ranging from 0 to 3 and were protected inside a see-through case, in the original clownfish’s territory and filmed their reaction. The “native” fish couldn’t run after or bite the newcomers, but they could still rush them and stare them down. And that’s what happened when the newcomers wore the same number of stripes as the resident clownfish.
They found that the native clownfish were the hardest on members of their own species with three white stripes. Those fish were run after and bitten 10 times more than those without stripes. Attacks on those fish were two times more frequent than on single-striped ones, and 1.3 times more frequent than on double-striped ones. It turned out that the researchers’ assumption had solid evidence.
Even so, biologist Rhodes questions whether the animals are really counting or just noticing more white coloration on the attacked fish. “Maybe researchers could further clarify clownfish’s calculating capacity,” adds Rhodes. “An experiment that goes beyond stripes could help. Could these fish learn, for example, to prefer two squares to three squares?”
12. What new use of counting skills have clownfish demonstrated?
A. Building up a large group. B. Making out potential threats.
C. Finding reliable food sources. D. Measuring the size of their territory.
13. What did the 2022 study about clownfish focus on?
A. The way they defend their territory.
B. The diversity of their stripe patterns.
C. The impact of their aggression on other species.
D. The role of stripe patterns in their behavioral reaction.
14. Which of the following is a Nemo-like clownfish most likely to attack?
A. A three-striped fish. B. A double-striped fish.
C. A fish with one stripe. D. A fish without stripes.
15. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Rhodes in the last paragraph?
A. To point out the significance of the study.
B. To lead to an alternative viewpoint on the study.
C. To show appreciation of clownfish’s learning ability.
D. To support the researchers’ findings about clownfish.
B 13. D 14. A 15. B
根据第一段“In the animal kingdom, counting skills are known to help grab bigger meals or find safety in group sizes. But clownfish may have uncovered another “value” in numbers: identification.(在动物界,计数能力已知可以帮助动物获取更多食物或者依靠群体规模保障安全。但是小丑鱼或许发现了数字具备的另一重“用处”:辨别识别。)”以及倒数第二段“They found that the native clownfish were the hardest on members of their own species with three white stripes. Those fish were run after and bitten 10 times more than those without stripes. Attacks on those fish were two times more frequent than on single-striped ones, and 1.3 times more frequent than on double-striped ones. It turned out that the researchers’ assumption had solid evidence.(他们发现,本土小丑鱼对拥有三条白色条纹的同类最为凶狠。这类同类遭受追逐撕咬的次数是无条纹小丑鱼的十倍。针对它们的攻击频次是单条纹小丑鱼的两倍,是双条纹小丑鱼的1.3倍。事实证明,研究人员的猜想拥有可靠依据。)”可知,小丑鱼依靠条纹数量区分同类、发起攻击,也就是分辨潜在威胁。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“In a 2022 study, scientists found clownfish display more aggressive behavior (e.g., running after or biting others) toward fish with vertical (垂直的) stripes compared with those with horizontal stripes.(在2022年的一项研究中,科学家发现,相比带有横向条纹的鱼类,小丑鱼对带有竖向条纹的鱼会表现出更强的攻击行为,例如追逐、撕咬。)”
根据第四段“This time around, ecologist Hayashi and colleagues assumed the fish could actually count those stripes. 以及第五段“They found that the native clownfish were the hardest on members of their own species with three white stripes.(他们发现,本土小丑鱼对拥有三条白色条纹的同类最为凶狠。)”
根据最后一段“Even so, biologist Rhodes questions whether the animals are really counting or just noticing more white coloration on the attacked fish.(即便如此,生物学家罗兹提出疑问:这些鱼类是真的具备计数能力,还是仅仅注意到被攻击鱼身上有更多白色区域。)”

How to Cope with a Panic Attack
Panic attacks can be a distressing experience, but understanding how to deal with them can make a big difference. ____16____
Focus on your senses. When you’re in the middle of a panic attack, it’s easy to feel disconnected from reality. ____17____ Look around and notice the things you can see, like a calming view. Listen carefully to the sounds around you. Touch something soft and comforting. This can help you stay in the moment and reduce the intensity of the panic.
Pay attention to your breathing. Anxiety often makes people breathe faster, which can lead to dizziness and increased anxiety. ____18____ For example, visualize a box and imagine breathing in for a count of four as you follow one side up the box, hold for four as you move along the top, exhale for four as you move down the other side, and hold for four as you move along the bottom.
____19____ Stamping on the spot might seem strange, but it works. Yoga teacher Helen Noakes suggests imitating the primal movements of animals when they’re stressed. Stamping gets you in contact with the earth, helping you feel more grounded and calm.
Finally, if a particular situation triggers your panic attacks, facing your fears in a controlled way can be beneficial. ____20____ For instance, if crowded buses make you panic, start by going on a bus with a friend and staying on for just one stop. Then gradually increase the time you spend on the bus. This way, you can build up your confidence and reduce the likelihood of future panic attacks.
A. Take part in positive activities.
B. Do a simple physical movement.
C. Try some breathing exercises to slow it down.
D. There are ways to ease the discomfort they bring.
E. By doing this, you can get used to the situation and reduce panic.
F. So it’s important to know how to recognize and handle them properly.
G. Using your senses can help you feel more connected to your surroundings.
D 17. G 18. C 19. B 20. E

After a particularly stressful day at work, with meetings dragging on endlessly, I returned home only to get into a heated argument with my teenage daughter, Megan. Needing to clear my head, I decided to go for an evening walk.
As I stepped out, the sky was already getting cloudier, but I still slowed my pace, trying to soak in the quiet and peacefulness of the evening. That’s when I noticed her — a cute Jack Russell Terrier. I knelt down to pet her, and her ears felt as soft as velvet between my fingers. At that moment, a strange thought flashed through my mind: this little creature seemed to be a sign, a break from the chaos I was in.
I continued my walk, thinking she would find her way home on her own. But the little dog walked beside and kept pace with me along the way, as if we were age-old companions. As the sky darkened and the rain began to pour, I wondered if I should just take her home.
Ironically, Megan had been asking for a new pet for some time. However, my husband, John, and I had resisted her requests because we were looking forward to a little more freedom, especially with Megan soon leaving for college. Besides, Megan and I had not exactly seen eye-to-eye earlier that day. I didn’t want it to seem as if I was rewarding her after yet another argument.
As it began to rain cats and dogs, I made my decision. Together, we jogged the final half-mile home in the rain. When we arrived, Megan and John were surprised to see the new addition to our family. The Terrier ran straight to Megan, jumping into her lap and claiming her as her own.
To know if the dog had owners who were looking for her, we contacted Animal Control. They confirmed she didn’t have an identification chip and offered us the option of leaving her at the shelter or keeping her at home for a two-week waiting period before we could officially adopt her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Megan looked up at us with begging eyes.

Paragraph 2:
As the two-week waiting period came to an end, a piece of a good news came.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Megan looked up at us with begging eyes. Her bright eyes were filled with earnest longing as she gently stroked the little dog’s soft fur, refusing to let go. She apologized sincerely for the earlier quarrel, admitting that she had been impulsive and stubborn. She promised to take full responsibility for the puppy, feeding, bathing and accompanying it in her spare time. Watching the harmonious scene of the dog nuzzling Megan affectionately, my heart melted instantly. All the anger and friction between us faded away. My husband and I exchanged a soft glance and finally nodded in agreement, deciding to keep the lovely little dog for the two-week waiting period.
Paragraph 2:
As the two-week waiting period came to an end, a piece of a good news came. Animal Control informed us that no owner had come to claim the Jack Russell Terrier, meaning we were eligible for official adoption. Over the two weeks, the puppy had brought endless joy and warmth to our family. Most importantly, it bridged the gap between Megan and me. We no longer quarreled frequently and learned to communicate patiently and understand each other. The stressful and chaotic days were replaced by warmth and laughter. What a precious surprise this little angel was! It was the best remedy for my bad mood and the most beautiful bond for our family.

A Better Way to Organize Your Day
A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
